On the road of searching for Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in topological insulator-based Josephson junctions, a highly-sought signature is the protected full transparency of electron transport through the junctions due to the existence of the MZMs, associated with complete gap closing between the electron-like and hole-like Andreev bound states (ABSs). Here, we present direct experimental evidence of gap closing and full transparency in single Josephson junctions constructed on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulator (3D TI) Bi$_2$Te$_3$. Our results demonstrate that the 2D surface of 3D TIs provides a promising platform for hosting and manipulating MZMs.
We describe the proximity effect in a short disordered metallic junction between three superconducting leads. Andreev bound states in the multi-terminal junction may cross the Fermi level. We reveal that for a quasi-continuous metallic density of states, crossings at the Fermi level manifest as closing of the proximity-induced gap. We calculate the local density of states for a wide range of transport parameters using quantum circuit theory. The gap closes inside an area of the space spanned by the superconducting phase differences. We derive an approximate analytic expression for the boundary…
We propose a protected qubit based on a modular array of superconducting islands connected by semiconductor Josephson interferometers. The individual interferometers realize effective $\cos2ϕ$ elements that exchange `pairs of Cooper pairs' between the superconducting islands when gate-tuned into balance and frustrated by a half flux quantum. If a large capacitor shunts the ends of the array, the circuit forms a protected qubit because its degenerate ground states are robust to offset charge and magnetic field fluctuations for a sizable window around zero offset charge and half flux quantum. Th…
One of the salient signatures of Majorana zero modes and topological superconductivity is a $4π$-periodic Josephson effect due to the combination of fermion parity conservation and the presence of a topologically protected odd number of zero energy crossings in the Andreev spectrum. In this paper, we study this effect in Josephson junctions composed of two semiconducting nanowires with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and induced superconductivity from the proximity effect. For certain orientations of the external magnetic field, such junctions possess a chiral symmetry and we show how this symmetry…

Coherence of superconducting qubits can be improved by implementing designs that protect the parity of Cooper pairs on superconducting islands. Here, we introduce a parity-protected qubit based on voltage-controlled semiconductor nanowire Josephson junctions, taking advantage of the higher harmonic content in the energy-phase relation of few-channel junctions. A symmetric interferometer formed by two such junctions, gate-tuned into balance and frustrated by a half-quantum of applied flux, yields a cos(2ϕ) Josephson element, reflecting coherent transport of pairs of Cooper pairs. We demonstrate…
The rise of topological phases of matter is strongly connected to their potential to host Majorana bound states, a powerful ingredient in the search for a robust, topologically protected, quantum information processing. In order to produce such states, a method of choice is to induce superconductivity in topological insulators. The engineering of the interplay between superconductivity and the electronic properties of a topological insulator is a challenging task and it is consequently very important to understand the physics of simple superconducting devices such as Josephson junctions, in wh…
In search of fault-tolerant topological quantum computation (TQC), zero-bias conductance peak as a necessary signature of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) has been observed in a number of solid-state systems. Here, we present the signature of MZMs from a phase-sensitive experiment on Josephson trijunctions constructed on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators. We observed that the minigap at the center of the trijunction is protected to close over extended regions in phase space, supporting in principle the Majorana phase diagram proposed by Fu and Kane in 2008. Our study paves the …
The Josephson effect describes the generic appearance of a supercurrent in a weak link between two superconductors. Its exact physical nature however deeply influences the properties of the supercurrent. Detailed studies of Josephson junctions can reveal microscopic properties of the superconducting pairing (spin-triplet correlations, $d$-wave symmetry) or of the electronic transport (quantum dot, ballistic channels). In recent years, considerable efforts have focused on the coupling of superconductors to topological insulators, in which transport is mediated by topologically protected Dirac s…
Topological superconductivity holds promise for fault-tolerant quantum computing. While planar Josephson junctions are attractive candidates to realize this exotic state, direct phase-measurements as the fingerprint of the topological transition are missing. By embedding two gate-tunable Al/InAs Josephson junctions in a loop geometry, we measure a $π$-jump in the junction phase with increasing in-plane magnetic field, ${\bf B}_\|$. This jump is accompanied by a minimum of the critical current, indicating a closing and reopening of the superconducting gap, strongly anisotropic in ${\bf B}_\|$. …
In this work, we investigate the spectra in an Aharonov-Bohm quantum-ring interferometer forming a Josephson junction between two topological superconductors (TSC) nanowires. The TSCs host Majorana bound states at their edges, and both the magnetic flux and the superconducting phase difference between the TSCs are used as control parameters. We use a tight-binding approach to model the quantum ring coupled to both TSCs, described by the Kitaev effective Hamiltonian. We solve the problem by means of exact numerical diagonalization of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian and obtain the spe…
The noncentrosymmetric Td-WTe$_2$, previously known as a type-II Weyl semimetal, is expected to have higher order topological phases with topologically protected, helical one-dimensional (1D) hinge states when their scarcely separated Weyl points get annihilated. However, the detection of these hinge states is difficult in the presence of the semimetallic behaviour of the bulk. Here, we spatially resolved the hinge states by analysing the magnetic field interference of supercurrent in Nb-WTe$_2$-Nb proximity Josephson junctions. The Josephson current along the a-axis of the WTe$_2$ crystal, bu…
The fractional Josephson effect remains one of the decisive hallmarks of topologically protected Majorana zero modes. We analyze the effects of parity violating quasiparticle poisoning onto the current voltage characteristics of topological Josephson junctions. We include poisoning events directly within the resistively shunted junction (RSJ) model in the overdamped limit both in the short- and long-junction regime. We calculate the current voltage characteristics numerically where poisoning is modeled either via additional rates in the Fokker-Planck equations or by a time dependent parity and…
A linear Josephson junction mediated by the surface states of a time-reversal-invariant Weyl or Dirac semimetal localizes Majorana flat bands protected by the time-reversal symmetry. We show that as a result, the Josephson current exhibits a discontinuous jump at $π$ phase difference which can serve as an experimental signature of the Majorana bands. The magnitude of the jump scales proportionally to the junction width and the momentum space distance between the Weyl nodes. It also exhibits a characteristic dependence on the junction orientation. We demonstrate that the jump is robust against …
Demonstrating the topological protection of Andreev states in Josephson junctions is an experimental challenge. In particular the telltale $4π$ periodicity expected for the current phase relation of topological Josephson junctions has remained elusive, because of fast parity breaking processes. It was predicted that low temperature ac susceptibility measurements related to the current thermal noise could reveal the topological protection of quantum Spin Hall edge states \cite{Fu2009}, by probing their low energy Andreev spectrum.% of QSH-based Josephson junctions. We have performed such a micr…
We show how the superconducting phase difference in a Josephson junction may be used to split the Kramers degeneracy of its energy levels and to remove all the properties associated with time reversal symmetry. The superconducting phase difference is known to be ineffective in two-terminal short Josephson junctions, where irrespective of the junction structure the induced Kramers degeneracy splitting is suppressed and the ground state fermion parity must stay even, so that a protected zero-energy Andreev level crossing may never appear. Our main result is that these limitations can be complete…

We study the emergent band topology of subgap Andreev bound states in the three-terminal Josephson junctions. We scrutinize the symmetry constraints of the scattering matrix in the normal region connecting superconducting leads that enable the topological nodal points in the spectrum of Andreev states. When the scattering matrix possesses time-reversal symmetry, the gap closing occurs at special stationary points that are topologically trivial as they carry vanishing Berry fluxes. In contrast, for the time-reversal broken case we find topological monopoles of the Berry curvature and correspond…

WTe$_2$ is a layered transitional-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) with a number of intriguing topological properties. Recently, WTe$_2$ has been predicted to be a higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) with topologically protected hinge states along the edges. The gapless nature of WTe$_2$ complicates the observation of one-dimensional (1D) topological states in transport due to their small contribution relative to the bulk. Here, we study the behavior of the Josephson effect in magnetic field to distinguish edge from bulk transport. The Josephson effect in few-layer WTe$_2$ reveals 1D states re…
We study the thermodynamic properties of topological Josephson junctions using a quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator-based junction as an example. In particular, we propose that phase-dependent measurements of the heat capacity offer an alternative to Josephson-current measurements to demonstrate key topological features. Even in an equilibrium situation, where the fermion parity is not conserved, the heat capacity exhibits a pronounced double peak in its phase dependence as a signature of the protected zero-energy crossing in the Andreev spectrum. This double-peak feature is robust against chan…
Topological superconductors differ from topologically trivial ones for the presence of topologically protected zero-energy modes. To date, experimental evidence of topological superconductivity in nanostructures has been mainly obtained by measuring the zero-bias conductance peak via tunneling spectroscopy. Here, we propose an alternative and complementary experimental recipe to detect topological phase transitions in these systems. We show in fact that, for a finite-sized system with broken time-reversal symmetry, discontinuities in the Josephson current-phase relation correspond to the prese…
We investigate numerically the Andreev spectrum of a multichannel mesoscopic quantum wire (N) with high spin-orbit interaction coupled to superconducting electrodes (S), contrasting topological and non topological behaviors. In the non topological case, modeled by a square lattice with Rashba interactions, we find that as soon as the normal quantum wires can host several conduction channels, the spin degeneracy of Andreev levels is lifted by a phase difference between the S reservoirs which breaks time reversal symmetry in zero Zeeman field. The Andreev states remain degenerate at phases multi…
In a standard Josephson junction the current is zero when the phase difference between the superconducting leads is zero. This condition is protected by parity and time-reversal symmetries. However, the combined presence of spin-orbit coupling and magnetic field breaks these symmetries and can lead to a finite supercurrent even when the phase difference is zero. This is the so called anomalous Josephson effect -- the hallmark effect of superconducting spintronics --and can be characterized by the corresponding anomalous phase shift ($ϕ_0$). We report the observation of a tunable anomalous Jose…
Josephson junctions with three or more superconducting leads have been predicted to exhibit topological effects in the presence of few conducting modes within the interstitial normal material. Such behavior, of relevance for topologically-protected quantum bits, would lead to specific transport features measured between terminals, with topological phase transitions occurring as a function of phase and voltage bias. Although conventional, two-terminal Josephson junctions have been studied extensively, multi-terminal devices have received relatively little attention to date. Motivated in part by…
