We present models of low- and high-ionization metal-line absorbers (O I, C II, C IV and Mg II) during the end of the reionization epoch, at z ~ 6. Using four cosmological hydrodynamical simulations with different feedback schemes (including the Illustris and Sherwood simulations) and two different choices of hydro-solver, we investigate how the overall incidence rate and equivalent width distribution of metal-line absorbers varies with the galactic wind prescription. We find that the O I and C II absorbers are reasonably insensitive to the feedback scheme. All models, however, struggle to reproduce the observations of C IV and Mg II, which are probing down to lower overdensities than O I and C II at z ~ 6, suggesting that the metals in the simulations are not being transported out into the IGM efficiently enough. The situation is improved but not resolved if we choose a harder (but still reasonable) and/or (locally) increased UV background at z ~ 6.
A late end to reionisation at redshift $z\simeq 5.3$ is consistent with observed spatial variations in the Ly$α$ forest transmission and the deficit of Ly$α$ emitting galaxies around extended Ly$α$ absorption troughs at $z=5.5$. In this model, large islands of neutral hydrogen should persist in the diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) until $z\simeq 6$. We use a novel, hybrid approach that combines high resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations with radiative transfer to predict the incidence of strong 21 cm forest absorbers with optical depths $τ_{21}>10^{-2}$ from the diffuse IGM in t…
We present redshift space two-point ($ξ$), three-point ($ζ$) and reduced three-point (Q) correlations of Ly$α$ absorbers (Voigt profile components having HI column density, $N_{\rm HI}>10^{13.5}$cm$^{-2}$) over three redshift bins spanning $1.7< z<3.5$ using high-resolution spectra of 292 quasars. We detect positive $ξ$ up to 8 $h^{-1}$ cMpc in all three redshift bins. The strongest detection of $ζ=1.81\pm 0.59$ (with Q$=0.68\pm 0.23$), is in $z=1.7-2.3$ bin at $1-2h^{-1}$ cMpc. The measured $ξ$ and $ζ$ values show an increasing trend with $N_{\rm HI}$, while Q remains relatively independent o…
We present the KODIAQ-Z survey aimed to characterize the cool, photoionized gas at 2.2<z<3.6 in 202 HI-selected absorbers with 14.6<log N(HI)<20, i.e., the gaseous interface between galaxies and the intergalactic medium (IGM). We find that the 14.6<log N(HI)<20 gas at 2.2<z<3.6 can be metal-rich gas (-1.6<[X/H]<-0.2) as seen in damped Ly-alpha absorbers (DLAs); it can also be very metal-poor ([X/H]<-2.4) or even pristine gas ([X/H]<-3.8) not observed in DLAs, but commonly observed in the IGM. For 16<log N(HI)<20 absorbers, the frequency of pristine absorbers is about 1%-10%, while for 14.6<log…
The production and distribution of metals in the diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) have implications for galaxy formation models and the baryon (re)cycling process. The relative abundance of metals in high versus low-ionization states has also been argued to be sensitive to the Universe's reionization history. However, measurements of the background metallicity of the IGM at z~4 are sparse and in poor agreement with one another, and reduced sensitivity in the near-IR renders detecting individual metal absorbers nearly impossible. We present a new clustering-based technique that enables the de…
We present a new method to study the contribution of faint sources to the UV background using the 1D correlation of metal absorbers with the intergalactic medium (IGM) transmission in a Quasi Stellar Object (QSO) sightline. We take advantage of a sample of $25$ high signal-to-noise ratio QSO spectra to retrieve $150$ triply-ionised carbon (\cfour) absorbers at $4.5\lesssim z\lesssim 6.2$, of which $37$ systems whose expected H{~\small I} absorption lie in the Lyman-$α$ forest. We derive improved constraints on the cosmic density of \cfour \,at $4.3< z < 6.2$ and infer from abundance-matching t…

We investigate the metal species associated with the Ly$α$ forest in the eBOSS quasar spectra. Metal absorption lines are revealed in the stacked spectra from cross-correlating the selected Ly$α$ absorbers in the forest and the flux fluctuation field. Up to 13 metal species are identified associated with relatively strong Ly$α$ absorbers (those with flux fluctuation $-1.0<δ_{\rm Lyα}<-0.6$ and with neutral hydrogen column density of ~ $10^{15-16}$ $\rm cm^{-2}$) over absorber redshift range of $2<z_{\rm abs}<4$. The column densities of these species decrease toward higher redshift and for weak…
Understanding gas flows into and out of the most massive dark matter structures in our Universe, galaxy clusters, is fundamental to understanding their evolution. Gas in clusters is well studied in the hot ($>$ 10$^{6}$ K) and cold ($<$ 10$^{4}$ K) regimes, but the warm gas component (10$^{4}$ - 10$^{6}$ K) is poorly constrained. It is challenging to observe directly, but can be probed through Ly$α$ absorption studies. We produce the first systematic study of the warm gas content of galaxy clusters through synthetic Ly$α$ absorption studies using cosmological simulations of two galaxy clusters…
The Ly$α$ forest decomposed into Voigt profile components allow us to study clustering properties of the intergalactic medium and its dependence on various physical quantities. Here, we report the first detections of probability excess of low-z (i.e z<0.48) Ly$α$ absorber triplets over a scale of $r_\parallel\leq8$pMpc with a maximum amplitude of $8.76^{+1.96}_{-1.65}$ at a longitudinal separation of 1-2pMpc. We measure non-zero three-point correlation ($ζ=4.76^{+1.98}_{-1.67}$) only at this scale with reduced three-point correlation value of Q=$0.95^{+0.39}_{-0.38}$. The measured $ζ$ shows an…
In this thesis, we systematically analyze the properties of intergalactic \Ovi absorbing gas structures at high redshift using optical spectra with intermediate ($\sim 6.6$ \kms FWHM) and high ($\sim 4.0$ \kms FWHM) resolution, obtained with UVES/VLT. We complement our analysis with synthetic spectra obtained from extensive cosmological simulations that are part of the OWLS project (Schaye et al. 2010). Our main conclusions are: 1) Both the observations and simulations imply that \Ovi absorbers at high redshift arise in structures spanning a broad range of scales and different physical conditi…
Using Voigt-profile-fitting procedures on Keck HIRES spectra of nine QSOs we identify 1099 CIV absorber components clumped in 201 systems outside the Lyman forest over 1.6 < z < 4.4. With associated SiIV, CII, SiII and NV where available we investigate bulk statistical and ionization properties of the components and systems and find no significant change in redshift for CIV and SiIV while CII, SiII and NV change substantially. The CIV components exhibit strong clustering but no clustering is detected for systems on scales from 150 km/s out to 50000 km/s. We conclude the clustering is due entir…
The relationship between galaxies and the state/chemical enrichment of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) expected to dominate the baryon budget at low-z provides sensitive constraints on structure formation and galaxy evolution models. We present a deep redshift survey in the field of 1ES1553+113, a blazar with a unique combination of UV+X-ray spectra for surveys of the circum-/intergalactic medium (CGM/IGM). Nicastro et al. 2018 reported the detection of two O VII WHIM absorbers at $z=0.4339$ and $0.3551$ in its spectrum, suggesting that the WHIM is metal-rich and sufficient to close t…
We present further results of a survey for absorption line systems in the spectra of four high redshift quasars (5.79 $\le$ z$_{\textrm{em}}$ $\le$ 6.13) obtained with the ESO Very Large Telescope X-Shooter. We identify 36 $\textrm{CIV}$ and 7 $\textrm{SiIV}$ systems with a $\ge$ 5$σ$ significance. The highest redshift $\textrm{CIV}$ and $\textrm{SiIV}$ absorbers identified in this work are at z = 5.80738 $\pm$ 0.00017 and z = 5.77495 $\pm$ 0.00038, respectively. We compute the comoving mass density of $\textrm{SiIV}$ ($Ω_{\textrm{SiIV}}$) and find that it evolves from $Ω_{\textrm{SiIV}}$ = 4.…
Simulations predict that gas in the intergalactic medium (IGM) is distributed in filamentary structures that connect dense galaxy clusters and form the cosmic web. These structures of predominantly ionized hydrogen are difficult to observe directly due to their lack of emitting regions. We serendipitously detected an overdensity of log N(HI) > 18.0 absorbers at z = 2.69 along the lines of sight toward a pair of background quasars. Three main absorption regions spanning ~2000 km/s (corresponding to 6.4 (h_70)^(-1) Mpc proper) are coincident in the two lines of sight, which are separated by ~90 …

We examine the physical conditions, environments, and statistical properties of intergalactic Ovi, Ovii and Oviii absorbers in the Simba cosmological hydrodynamic simulation suite. The goal is to understand the nature of these high ionisation absorbers, and test Simba's surprising prediction that $\sim 70\%$ of cosmic baryons at $z=0$ are in the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) driven by jet feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN). By comparing a full-physics Simba run versus one with jets turned off, we find that jet feedback causes widespread heating that impacts the absorption morpho…
Recent observations suggest that hydrogen reionization ends late ($z \simeq 6$) and proceeds quickly. We present here a new model of the meta-galactic UV/X-ray background (UVB) that is consistent with this. It adopts the most recent determinations of the ionizing emissivity due to stars and AGN, as well as of the HI absorber column density distribution. Another major improvement is a new treatment of the intergalactic medium (IGM) opacity for ionizing photons that is able to consistently capture the transition from a neutral to an ionized IGM. Previous synthesis models of the UVB, when used in…
We present here results from a survey of intervening C IV absorbers at $z < 0.16$ conducted using 223 sightlines from the Hubble Spectroscopic Legacy Archive. Most systems (83%) out of the total sample of 69 have simple kinematics with 1 or 2 C IV components. In the 22 C IV systems with well constrained H I column densities, the temperatures from the $b$-values imply predominantly photoionized plasma ($T\leq 10^5$ K) and non-thermal dynamics. These systems also have solar or higher metallicities. We obtain a C IV line density of $d\mathcal{N}/dX = 5.1\pm 1.0$ for $\log [N(C~IV)~(cm^{-2})]\geq1…
We analyze relative abundances and ionization conditions in a strong absorption system at z=6.84, seen in the spectrum of the z=7.54 background quasar ULAS J134208.10+092838.61. Singly ionized C, Si, Fe, Mg, and Al measurements are consistent with a warm neutral medium that is metal-poor but not chemically pristine. Firm non-detections of C IV and Si IV imply that any warm ionized phase of the IGM or CGM has not yet been enriched past the ultra-metal-poor regime (<0.001Z_{solar}), unlike lower redshift DLAs where these lines are nearly ubiquitous. Relative abundances of the heavy elements 794 …
The fluctuating Gunn-Peterson approximation (FGPA) is a commonly-used method to generate mock Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) forest absorption skewers at Cosmic Noon ($z\gtrsim 2$) from the matter-density field of $N$-body simulations without running expensive hydrodynamical simulations. Motivated by recent developments in 3D IGM tomography observations as well as matter density field reconstruction techniques applied to galaxy redshift samples at $z\sim 2$, we examine the possibility of observationally testing FGPA by directly examining the relationship between the Ly$α$ transmission and the underlying ma…
The circumgalactic medium (CGM) plays a vital role in the formation and evolution of galaxies, acting as a lifeline between galaxies and the surrounding intergalactic medium (IGM). In this study we leverage a unique sample of quasar pairs to investigate the properties of the CGM with absorption line tomography. We present a new sample of medium resolution Keck/ESI, Magellan/MagE, and VLT/XSHOOTER spectra of 29 quasar pairs at redshift $2 < z < 3$. We supplement the sample with additional spectra of 32 pairs from the literature, creating a catalog of 61 quasar pairs with angular separations bet…
Determining when and how the first galaxies reionized the intergalactic medium (IGM) promises to shed light on both the nature of the first objects and the cosmic history of baryons. Towards this goal, quasar absorption lines play a unique role by probing the properties of diffuse gas on galactic and intergalactic scales. In this review we examine the multiple ways in which absorption lines trace the connection between galaxies and the IGM near the reionization epoch. We first describe how the Ly$α$ forest is used to determine the intensity of the ionizing ultraviolet background and the global…
We characterize the properties of the intergalactic medium (IGM) around a sample of galaxies extracted from state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations of structure formation in a cosmological volume of 25 Mpc comoving at $z\sim 2$. The simulations are based on two different subresolution schemes for star formation and supernova feedback: the MUlti-Phase Particle Integrator (MUPPI) scheme and the Effective Model. We develop a quantitative and probabilistic analysis based on the apparent optical depth method of the properties of the absorbers as a function of impact parameter from their nearby …
