To learn about a physical system of interest, experimental results must be able to discriminate among models. We introduce a geometrical measure to quantify the distance between models for pseudoscalar-meson photoproduction in amplitude space. Experimental observables, with finite accuracy, map to probability distributions in amplitude space, and the characteristic width scale of such distributions needs to be smaller than the distance between models if the observable data are going to be useful. We therefore also introduce a method for evaluating probability distributions in amplitude space that arise as a result of one or more measurements, and show how one can use this to determine what further measurements are going to be necessary to be able to discriminate among models.
It is shown that within a truncated partial wave analysis for photoproduction of two pseudoscalar mesons, it is possible to halve the number of independent partial amplitudes by taking into account parity conservation. In addition, within the framework of the proposed formalism, one can rather easily resolve the double discrete ambiguity arising from the symmetry under complex conjugation of the helicity amplitudes. This leads to essential simplifications of the complete experiment problem, at least as far as mathematical aspects are concerned.
This dissertation treats the problem of complete experiments for pseudoscalar meson photoproduction, in the context of a truncated partial-wave analysis (TPWA). The work contains algebraic and numerical considerations. The influence of measurement uncertainties is examined using bootstrap methods. The thesis was originally published online by the University of Bonn in the 1st quarter of 2019 (links are given in the comments).
Sum rules are derived relating mean squared charge radii of the pseudoscalar mesons with the convergent integral of the difference of hadron photoproduction cross-sections on pseudoscalar mesons.
The complete experiment problem in the truncated partial wave analysis of pseudoscalar meson photoproduction with suppressed t-channel exchanges is investigated. The focus is set to ambiguities of the group S observables with the unpolarized differential cross section, $σ_0$, and the three single-spin observables, $Σ$, $T$ and $P$. For this purpose, the approach and formalism already worked out by Omelaenko in 1981 is revisited in this work. A numerical study using multipoles of the PWA solution MAID2007 shows how only one additional double polarization observable can resolve all ambiguities. …
In two meson photoproduction off a nucleon, for the case in which two of the three final state hadrons are products of the decay of an intermediate resonance, general expressions for its decay distribution and for polarization observables are derived in a model independent way. These are functions of either the spin density matrix elements (SDME's) or statistical tensors of the resonance, and the angles of its decay products. The expressions are general enough that it also describes cases where more than one resonance of arbitrary quantum numbers contributes, including interference effects. Th…
By exploiting the underlying symmetries of the relative phases of the pseudoscalar meson photoproduction amplitude, we determine all the possible sets of four double-spin observables that resolve the phase ambiguity of the amplitude in transversity basis up to an overall phase. The present results corroborate the original findings by Chiang and Tabakin [Phys. Rev. C 55, 2054 (1997)]. However, it is found that the completeness condition of four double-spin observables to resolve the phase ambiguity holds only when the relative phases do not meet the condition of equal magnitudes. In situations …
Amplitude and partial wave analyses for pion, eta or kaon photoproduction are discussed in the context of `complete experiments'. It is shown that the model-independent helicity amplitudes obtained from at least 8 polarization observables including beam, target and recoil polarization can not be used to determine underlying resonance parameters. However, a truncated partial wave analysis, which theoretically requires only 5 observables will be possible with minimal model input.
Using the description of the subprocess $γγ^*\to S(P)$ in terms of local Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model we calculate the cross sections of photoproduction of scalar and pseudoscalar mesons in high energy photon-lepton collisions processes. The dependence on the transversal momentum and the total cross sections in Weizsaecker-Williams approximation are presented.
Positivity constraints have proved to be important for spin observables of exclusive reactions involving polarized initial and final particles. Attention is focused in this note on the photoproduction of pseudoscalar mesons from spin 1/2 baryons, more specifically gamma+ N -> K+ Lambda, gamma+ N -> K Sigma, for which new experimental data are becoming available.
We have evaluated pseudoscalar and scalar neutral pion photoproduction in $\vecγp\toπ^0p$ and $\vecγp\to a_0^0p$ above the resonance region and within Regge phenomenology. Our fit, including GlueX $Σ$ pseudoscalar photoproduction data, shows that previous SLAC $Σ$ measurements for $\vecγp \to π^0p$ above $E_γ= 4~\mathrm{GeV}$ are at variance with SLAC data with more recent measurements made by GlueX in vicinity of $E_γ= 9~\mathrm{GeV}$. The Regge model predicts that the beam polarization asymmetry $Σ$ of the scalar meson is opposite to that of pseudoscalar meson photoproduction, however, the c…
We consider the photoproduction of secondary mesons in the framework of the Quark-Gluon String model. At relatively low energies, not only cylindrical, but also planar diagrams have to be accounted for. To estimate the significant contribution of planar diagrams in gamma-p collisions at rather low energies, we have used the expression obtained from the corresponding phenomenological expression for pi-p collisions. The results obtained by the model are compared to the existing SLAC experimental data. The model predictions for light meson production at HERMES energies are also presented.
With the advent of new photon tagging facilities and novel experimental technologies it has become possible to perform photoproduction cross section measurements of pseudoscalar mesons on nuclei with a percent level accuracy. The extraction of the radiative decay widths from these measurements at forward angles is done by the Primakoff method, which requires theoretical treatment of all processes participating in these reactions at the same percent level. In this work we review the theoretical approach to meson photoproduction amplitudes in the electromagnetic and strong fields of nuclei at fo…
Wide-angle photoproduction of pseudoscalar mesons is investigated under the assumption of dominance of the handbag mechanism considering both quark helicity flip and non-flip. The partonic subprocess, meson photoproduction off quarks, is analysed with the help of a covariant decomposition of the subprocess amplitudes which is independent of a specific meson generation mechanism. As examples of subprocess dynamics, however, the twist-2 as well as two-particle twist-3 contributions are explicitly calculated. Characteristic features of the handbag approach are discussed in dependence upon the rel…
Recent advances in the photon tagging facilities together with the novel, high resolution fast calorimetry made possible to perform photoproduction cross section measurements of pseudoscalar mesons on nuclei with a percent level accuracy. The extraction of the radiative decay widths, needed for testing the symmetry breaking effects in QCD, from these measurements at small angles is done by the Primakoff method. This method requires theoretical treatment of all processes participating in these reactions at the same percent level. The most updated description of general processes, including the …
We study the photoproduction of scalar mesons close to the threshold of f_0(980) and a_0(980) using a unitary chiral model. Peaks for both resonances show up in the invariant mass distributions of pairs of pseudoscalar mesons. A discussion is made on the photoproduction of these resonances in nuclei, which can shed light on their nature, a subject of continuous debate.
We calculate the cross section for diffractive photoproduction of opposite-charge pseudoscalar meson pairs $M^+M^- = π^+ π^-$, $K^+ K^-$, $D^+ D^-$ and $B^+ B^-$ in a broad range of center-of-mass energies relevant for GlueX/Hall D, FOCUS, COMPASS and HERA experiments. In the case of $π^+π^-$ production we find that the interference of the $ρ^0$ resonance and the two-pion continuum leads to a considerable deformation of the shape of $ρ^0$ in agreement with the data from the ZEUS collaboration. We also discuss the spectral shape of the $ρ^0$ as a function of the momentum transfer and the contri…
We analyze the $γp \to ηp$ process from threshold up to 1.2 GeV, employing an effective Lagrangian approach that allows for a mixing of eta couplings of pseudoscalar and pseudovector nature. The mixing ratio of the couplings may serve as a quantitative estimation of the $SU_L(3)\times SU_R(3)$ extended chiral symmetry violation in this energy regime. The data analyzed (differential cross sections and asymmetries) show a preference for the pseudoscalar coupling -- 91% of pseudoscalar coupling component for the best fit. We stress that a more conclusive answer to this question requires a more co…
We construct the amplitudes of $πη$ photoproduction taking into account the effects of the $πη$ - $K\bar K$ interchannel coupling. The idea of our model is close to the molecular description of scalar resonances with exception that apart from the pseudoscalar loops we include also vector mesons in the intermediate state loops. These amplitudes are used to calculate the $S$-wave cross sections and mass distributions in the $πη$ effective mass region corresponding to the scalar resonances $a_0(980)$ and $a_0(1450)$. The values we obtained for $a_0(980)$ are comparable with predictions of other m…
Single pseudoscalar and vector mesons inclusive photoproduction $γh\rightarrow MX$ via higher twist mechanism is calculated using the QCD running coupling constant method. It is proved that in the context of this method a higher twist contribution to the photoproduction cross section cannot be normalized in terms of the meson electromagnetic form factor. The structure of infrared renormalon singularities of the higher twist subprocess cross section and the resummed expression (the Borel sum) for it are found. Comparisons are made with earlier results, as well as with leading twist cross sectio…
The formalism devoted to the production of two pseudoscalar mesons with a linearly polarized photon beam has been detailed and illustrated in Phys. Rev. D100 (2019) 054017. This document reports the necessary formulas, without proof, to perform an analysis of the angular distribution of two mesons photoproduction. The relations to extract moments of the angular distribution are provided, as well as the relations between moments and partial waves for a system involving $S$, $P$ and $D$ waves. The expressions of the integrated beam asymmetry and the beam asymmetry along the $y$ axis in term of m…
Single pseudoscalar and vector mesons hard semi-inclusive photoproduction $γh \to MX" via higher twist (HT) mechanism is calculated using the QCD running coupling constant method. The structure of infrared renormalon singularities of the HT subprocess cross section and the Borel sum for it are found. The problem of normalization of HT process cross section in terms of the meson elm form factor is discussed.
The energy and the angular dependence of the associative vector charmed ${D^*}$-meson photoproduction, $γ+N\to {\cal B}_c+ \overline{D^*}$, with ${\cal B}_c=Λ_c$ or $Σ_c$, has been predicted in framework of pseudoscalar D-meson exchange model. The behavior of the cross section is driven by phenomenological form factors, which can be parametrized in terms of two independent parameters. The predicted values of the cross section are sizeable enough to be measured in the near threshold region.
Very light pseudoscalars can arise from the symmetry-breaking sector in many extensions of the Standard Model. If their mass is below 200 MeV, they can be long-lived and have interesting phenomenology. We discuss the experimental constraints on several models with light pseudoscalars, including one in which the pseudoscalar is naturally fermiophobic. Taking into account the stringent bounds from rare K and B decays, we find allowed parameter space in each model that may be accessible in direct production experiments. In particular, we study the photoproduction of light pseudoscalars at Jeffers…
General expressions for the unpolarized differential cross section and for various polarization observables in the coherent pseudoscalar meson photo- and electroproduction on the deuteron target have been obtained in one-photon-exchange approximation. The spin structure of the matrix element is explicitly derived in terms of structure functions. The correspondence with the helicity amplitudes is given. The polarization effects have been investigated for the case of a longitudinally polarized electron beam and vector or tensor polarized deuteron target. The polarization (vector or tensor) of th…
Recent CLAS photoproduction results using a tagged bremsstrahlung photon beam for the ground-state pseudoscalar meson photoproduction channels ($K^+ Λ$, $K^+ Σ^0$, $ηp$, $π^+ n$ and $π^0 p$) show a normalization discrepancy with older results from SLAC, DESY and CEA that used an untagged bremsstrahlung beam. The CLAS results are roughly a factor of two smaller than the older data. The CLAS $K^+Λ$ and $K^+Σ^0$ results are in excellent agreement with the latest LEPS results that also employed a tagged beam. For the vector meson ($ωp$ and $ϕp$) channels, CLAS agrees with SLAC results that employe…
The light-quark non-strange scalar mesons a0(980), f0(980), f0(1370), a0(1450), f0(1500) and f0(1710) are of great interest as there is no generally accepted view of their structure which can encompass q-q-qbar-qbar, molecular, q-qbar and glueball states in various combinations. It has been shown previously that the radiative decays of the scalar mesons to rho and omega are a good probe of their structure and provide good discrimination among models. Scalar meson photoproduction is proposed as an alternative to measuring radiative decays and it is shown that it is a feasible proposition.
For high energy linearly polarized photon--proton scattering we have calculated the azimuthal and polar angle distributions in inclusive on recoil proton experimental setup. We have taken into account the production of lepton and pseudoscalar meson charged pairs. The typical values of cross sections are of order of hundreds of picobarn. The size of polarization effects are of order of several percents. The results are generalized for the case of electroproduction processes on the proton at rest and for high energy proton production process on resting proton.
We provide an analysis of vector meson photoproduction in the channel of the vector meson decaying into a pseudoscalar meson plus a photon, i.e. $V\to Pγ$. It is shown that non-trivial kinematic correlations arise from the measurement of the $Pγ$ angular distributions in the overall c.m. system in comparison with those in the vector-meson-rest frame. In terms of the vector meson density matrix elements, the implication of such kinematic correlations in the measurement of polarization observables is discussed. For the $ω$ meson production, due to its relatively large branching ratios for $ω\toπ…
Entangled states of pseudoscalar mesons represent a very interesting tool for studying foundations of quantum mechanics, e.g. for testing Bell inequalities. Recently, they also emerged as a test bench for quantum information protocols. On the other hand, from a quantum information point of view, the characterization of the distance between two quantum states is a topic of the utmost importance. In this letter, with the purpose of providing a useful tool for further investigations, we address the problem of which distance allows a better discrimination between density matrices appearing in pseu…
We investigate the reaction mechanism of the $ϕ$-meson photoproduction off the proton target, i.e., $γp\toϕp$, up to $\sqrt{s}=2.8$ GeV. For this purpose, we employ an effective Lagrangian approach in the tree-level Born approximation, and we employ various experimental and theoretical inputs. As a theoretical setup, the vectorlike Pomeron ($C=+1$) is taken into account as a parameterized two-gluon exchange contribution. We also consider $f_1(1285)$ axial-vector-meson, ($π,η$) pseudoscalar-meson, and ($a_0,f_0$) scalar-meson exchanges in the $t$ channel, in addition to the experimentally confi…

We study the strangeness $+1$ meson-baryon systems to obtain improved $KN$ and $K^*N$ amplitudes and to look for a possible resonance formation by the $KN$-$K^*N$ coupled interaction. We obtain amplitudes for light vector meson-baryon systems by implementing the $s$-, $t$-, $u$- channel diagrams and a contact interaction. The pseudoscalar meson-baryon interactions are obtained by relying on the Weinberg-Tomozawa theorem. The transition amplitudes between the systems consisting of pseudoscalars and vector mesons are calculated by extending the Kroll-Ruderman term for pion photoproduction replac…
