We investigate how a Higgs mechanism could be responsible for the emergence of gravity in extensions of Einstein theory. In this scenario, at high energies, symmetry restoration could "turn off" gravity, with dramatic implications for cosmology and quantum gravity. The sense in which gravity is muted depends on the details of the implementation. In the most extreme case gravity's dynamical degrees of freedom would only be unleashed after the Higgs field acquires a non-trivial vacuum expectation value, with gravity reduced to a topological field theory in the symmetric phase. We might also identify the Higgs and the Brans-Dicke fields in such a way that in the unbroken phase Newton's constant vanishes, decoupling matter and gravity. We discuss the broad implications of these scenarios.
We study inflation driven by the Higgs field in the Einstein-Cartan formulation of gravity. In this theory, the presence of the Holst and Nieh-Yan terms with the Higgs field non-minimally coupled to them leads to three additional coupling constants. For a broad range of parameters, we find that inflation is both possible and consistent with observations. In most cases, the spectral index is given by $n_s=1-2/N_\star$ (with $N_\star$ the number of e-foldings) whereas the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ can vary between about $10^{-10}$ and $1$. Thus, there are scenarios of Higgs inflation in the Ein…
The Higgs mechanism is one of the central pieces of the Standard Model of electroweak interactions and thanks to it we can generate the masses of the elementary particles. Its fundamental origin is nonetheless unknown. Furthermore, in order to preserve renormalizability we have to break the gauge symmetry spontaneously, what leads to a huge induced cosmological constant incompatible with observations. It turns out that in the context of generalized Brans-Dicke theories of gravity the Higgs potential structure can be motivated from solutions of the field equations which carry harmless cosmologi…
The Higgs effective potential becomes unstable at approximately $10^{11}$ GeV, and if only standard model interactions are considered, the lifetime $τ$ of the electroweak vacuum turns out to be much larger than the age of the Universe $T_U$. It is well known, however, that $τ$ is extremely sensitive to the presence of unknown new physics: the latter can enormously lower $τ$. This poses a serious problem for the stability of our Universe, demanding for a physical mechanism that protects it from a disastrous decay. We have found that there exists a universal stabilizing mechanism that naturally …
There are indications that an asymptotically safe UV completion of the Standard Model with gravity could constrain the Higgs self-coupling, resulting in a prediction of the Higgs mass close to the vacuum stability bound in the Standard Model. The predicted value depends on the top quark mass and comes out somewhat higher than the experimental value if the current central value for the top quark mass is assumed. Beyond the Standard Model, the predicted value also depends on dark fields coupled through a Higgs portal. Here we study the Higgs self-coupling in a toy model of the Standard Model wit…
In this article, we intend to find a specific model which can satisfy the further refining dS swampland conjecture and scalar weak gravity conjecture (SWGC) simultaneously, in particular, Higgs inflation model and its two extensions: Higgs-Dilaton model and Palatini Higgs inflation. We find that although Higgs inflation model and Higgs-Dilaton model could satisfy the further refining dS swampland conjecture, the two models cannot satisfy SWGC and its strong version. While Palatini Higgs inflation could satisfy these conjectures simultaneously. Therefore Palatini Higgs inflation could be a "rea…
We consider Weyl's conformal gravity coupled to a complex matter field in Weyl geometry. It is shown that a Higgs potential naturally arises from a $\tilde R^2$ term in moving from the Jordan frame to the Einstein frame. A massless Nambu-Goldstone boson, which stems from spontaneous symmetry breakdown of the Weyl gauge invariance, is absorbed into the Weyl gauge field, thereby the gauge field becoming massive. We present a model where the gravitational interaction generates a Higgs potential whose form is a perfect square. Finally, we show that a theory in the Jordan frame is gauge-equivalent …
The effect of gravitational fluctuations on the quantum effective potential for scalar fields is a key ingredient for predictions of the mass of the Higgs boson, understanding the gauge hierarchy problem and a possible explanation of an---asymptotically---vanishing cosmological constant. We find that the quartic self-interaction of the Higgs scalar field is an irrelevant coupling at the asymptotically safe ultraviolet fixed point of quantum gravity. This renders the ratio between the masses of the Higgs boson and top quark predictable. If the flow of couplings below the Planck scale is approxi…
According to the current experimental data, the Higgs vacuum appears to be metastable due to the development of a second lower ground state in its potential. Consequently, vacuum decay would induce the nucleation of true vacuum bubbles with catastrophic consequences for our Universe and therefore we are motivated to study possible stabilising mechanisms in the early universe. In our latest investigation (2207.00696), we studied the electroweak metastability in the context of the observationally favoured model of Starobinsky inflation. Following the motivation and techniques from our first stud…
Starobinsky inflation and Higgs inflation in gravity, and their equivalence based on the common inflationary potential are extended to supergravity in the proper framework, where the Starobinsky and Higgs descriptions of inflation arise in two different gauges of the same supergravity model.
We study the parametrization and gauge dependences in the Higgs field coupled to gravity in the context of asymptotic safety. We use the exponential parametrization to derive the fixed points for the cosmological constant, Planck mass, Higgs mass and its coupling, keeping arbitrary gauge parameters $α$ and $β$, and compare the results with the linear split. We find that the beta functions for the Higgs potential are expressed in terms of redefined Planck mass such that the apparent gauge dependence is absent. Only the trace mode of the gravity fluctuations couples to the Higgs potential and it…
It is shown that gravitation naturally emerges from the standard model of particle physics if local scale invariance is imposed in the context of a single conformal (Weyl-symmetric) theory. Gravitation is then conformally-related to the standard model via a conformal transformation, merely a function of the number of fermionic particles dominating the energy density associated with the ground state of the physical system. Doing so resolves major puzzles afflicting the standard models of particle physics and cosmology, clearly indicating these to be artifacts stemming from universally employing…
We study the phenomenology of the Higgs-Dilaton model in the context of Einstein-Cartan gravity, focusing on the separate impact of the Holst and Nieh-Yan terms on the inflationary observables. Using analytical and numerical techniques, we show the predictions of these scenarios to display an attractor-like behaviour intrinsically related to the curvature of the field-space manifold in the metric formulation of the theory. Beyond that, the analysis of the Nieh-Yan case reveals the existence of an additional attractor solution induced by a cubic pole in the inflaton kinetic term that becomes re…
There are many hints that gravity is asymptotically safe. The inclusion of gravitational corrections can result in the ultraviolet fundamental Standard Model and constrain the Higgs mass to take the smallest value such that electroweak vacuum is stable. Taking into account the current top quark mass measurements this value is $m_H \approx 130$ GeV.\\ This article considers the predictions of the Higgs mass in two minimal Beyond Standard Model scenarios, where the stability is improved. One is the sterile quark axion model, while the other is the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge symmetry model introducing a …
Models of inflation in which the Higgs field is non-minimally coupled to gravity lead, after a recaling of the metric, to a complicated expression for the potential of the inflaton field. Nevertheless, this potential produces the desired features, both theoretical and experimental, after some approximations are made. In this note, we also allow for a modification of the Higgs kinetic term in such a way that the resulting potential for the inflaton field is, without any approximation, of the simplest form after the rescaling of the metric.

This article investigates the effects of Tree Level Higgs Potential on reheating in $f(Q)$ gravity. We examine the formalism of tree level inflation in a modified $f(Q)$ model, finding that the slow roll and e-folds number during inflation depend on the $f(Q)$ model $α$ parameter. Additionally, we calculate the reheating as a function of the decay rate, constraining the inflationary parameters and reheating temperature. Our study reveals that the Tree Level Higgs Potential influences the reheating temperature and decay rate. We conclude that increasing the decay rate energy leads to higher reh…
It has recently been suggested that the Standard Model Higgs boson could act as the inflaton while minimally coupled to gravity - given that the gravity sector is extended with an $αR^2$ term and the underlying theory of gravity is of Palatini, rather than metric, type. In this paper, we revisit the idea and correct some shortcomings in earlier studies. We find that in this setup the Higgs can indeed act as the inflaton and that the tree-level predictions of the model for the spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio are $n_s\simeq 0.941$, $r\simeq 0.3/(1+10^{-8}α)$, respectively, for a ty…
We present an updated review of Kraichnan's derivation of Einstein's equations from quantum field theory, including the period after the discovery of the Higgs mechanism. Gravitation in the Einstein sense is seen to be renormalizable and consistent with the Standard Model of Fundamental Interactions.
We consider the (gauged) Weyl gravity action, quadratic in the scalar curvature ($\tilde R$) and in the Weyl tensor ($\tilde C_{μνρσ}$) of the Weyl conformal geometry. In the absence of matter fields, this action has spontaneous breaking in which the Weyl gauge field $ω_μ$ becomes massive (mass $m_ω\sim$ Planck scale) after "eating" the dilaton in the $\tilde R^2$ term, in a Stueckelberg mechanism. As a result, one recovers the Einstein-Hilbert action with a positive cosmological constant and the Proca action for the massive Weyl gauge field $ω_μ$. Below $m_ω$ this field decouples and Weyl geo…
Teleparallel gravity is a formulation of general relativity that is physically equivalent to metric gravity if the gravitational action has the Einstein-Hilbert form and matter is minimally coupled. However, scalar fields generally couple directly to the connection, breaking the equivalence. In particular, this happens for the Standard Model Higgs. We show that a teleparallel theory with a non-minimally coupled scalar field has no linear scalar perturbations, and therefore cannot give successful inflation, unless the non-minimal coupling functions satisfy a particular relation. If the relation…
We derive a Higgs inflationary model in the context of a complex geometrical scalar-tensor theory of gravity. In this model the Higgs inflaton scalar field has geometrical origin playing the role of the Weyl scalar field in the original non-riemannian background geometry. The energy scale enough to generate inflation from the Higgs energy scale is achieved due to the compatibility of the theory with its background complex Weyl-integrable geometry. We found that for a number of e-foldings $N=63$, a nearly scale invariant spectrum for the inflaton is obtained with an spectral index $n_s\simeq 0.…
