We demonstrate a nanophotonic parametric light source with a record high normalized conversion efficiency of $3\times 10^6\, W^{-2}$, owing to resonantly enhanced four wave mixing in coupled high-Q photonic crystal resonators. The rate of spontaneously emitted photons reaches 14 MHz.
Microring resonators made from silicon are becoming a popular microscale device format for generating photon pairs at telecommunications wavelengths at room temperature. In compact devices with a footprint less than $5\times 10^{-4}$ mm$^2$, we demonstrate pair generation using only a few microwatts of average pump power. We discuss the role played by important parameters such as the loss, group-velocity dispersion and the ring-waveguide coupling coefficient in finding the optimum operating point for silicon microring pair generation. Silicon photonics can be fabricated using deep ultraviolet …
We demonstrate the first achievement of continuous-wave (CW) pumped second harmonic generation (SHG) in few- and mono-layer gallium selenide (GaSe) flakes, which are coated on silicon photonic crystal (PC) cavities. Because of ultrahigh second order nonlinearity of the two-dimensional (2D) GaSe and localized resonant mode in the PC cavity, SHG's pump power is greatly reduced to microwatts. In a nine-layer GaSe coated PC cavity, while the optical power inside the GaSe flake is only 1.5 percent of that in the silicon PC slab, the SHG in GaSe is more than 650 times stronger than the third harmoni…
A new tuning mechanism is introduced in high-Q multimode photonic crystal resonators allowing to harness the resonant enhancement of the parametric resonance systematically. As a consequence, ultra-efficient stimulated and spontaneous Four Wave Mixing at continuous microWatt pumping levels are observed, and the scaling with Q is demonstrated. Experimental results are in perfect agreement with an analytical model without fitting parameters.
Chip-based optical amplifiers can significantly expand the functionalities of photonic devices. In particular, optical-parametric amplifiers (OPAs), with engineerable gain-spectra, are well-suited for nonlinear-photonic applications. Chip-based OPAs typically require long waveguides that occupy a large footprint, and high pump powers that cannot be easily produced with chip-scale lasers. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a microresonator-assisted regenerative OPA that benefits from the large nonlinearity enhancement of microresonators and yields a high gain in a small footprint. …
We propose a triply-resonant electro-optic modulator architecture which maximizes modulation efficiency using simultaneous resonant enhancement of the RF drive signal, the optical pump, and the generated optical sideband. Optical enhancement of the optical pump and the sideband is achieved using resonant supermodes of two coupled optical resonators, and the RF enhancement is achieved with LC circuits formed by the capacitances of the optical resonators and inductors which can be implemented using CMOS technology. In the proposed configuration, the photon lifetime determines the bandwidth of th…
We demonstrate quasi-phase matched, triply-resonant sum frequency conversion in 10.6-um-diameter integrated gallium phosphide ring resonators. A small-signal, waveguide-to-waveguide power conversion efficiency of 8%/mW is measured for conversion from telecom (1536 nm) and near infrared (1117 nm) to visible (647 nm) wavelengths with an absolute power conversion efficiency of 6.3% measured at saturation pump power. For the complementary difference frequency generation process, a single photon conversion efficiency of 7.2%/mW from visible to telecom is projected for resonators with optimized coup…
Semiconductor nanowires (NWs) are promising for realizing various on-chip nonlinear optical devices, due to their nanoscale lateral confinement and strong light-matter interaction. However, high-intensity pulsed pump lasers are typically needed to exploit their optical nonlinearity because light couples poorly with nanometric-size wires. Here, we demonstrate microwatts continuous-wave light pumped second harmonic generation (SHG) in AlGaAs NWs by integrating them with silicon planar photonic crystal cavities. Light-NW coupling is enhanced effectively by the extremely localized cavity mode at t…

Quantum photon sources of high rate, brightness, and purity are increasingly desirable as quantum information systems are quickly scaled up and applied to many fields. Using a periodically poled lithium niobate microresonator on chip, we demonstrate photon-pair generation at high rates of 8.5 MHz and 36.3 MHz using only 3.4-$μ$W and 13.4-$μ$W pump power, respectively, marking orders of magnitude improvement over the state-of-the-art. The measured coincidence to accidental ratio is well above 100 at those high rates and reaches $14,682\pm 4427$ at a lower pump power. The same chip enables heral…
Miniaturization of devices has been a primary objective in microelectronics and photonics for decades, aiming at denser integration, enhanced functionalities and drastic reduction of power consumption. Headway in nanophotonics is currently linked to the progress in concepts and technologies necessary for applications in information and communication, brain inspired computing, medicine and sensing and quantum information. Amongst all nanostructures, semiconductor photonic crystals (PhCs) occupy a prominent position as they enable the fabrication of quasi ultimate optical cavities. Low threshold…
We propose a low noise, triply-resonant, electro-optic (EO) scheme for quantum microwave-to-optical conversion based on coupled nanophotonics resonators integrated with a superconducting qubit. Our optical system features a split resonance - a doublet - with a tunable frequency splitting that matches the microwave resonance frequency of the superconducting qubit. This is in contrast to conventional approaches where large optical resonators with free-spectral range comparable to the qubit microwave frequency are used. In our system, EO mixing between the optical pump coupled into the low freque…
Frequency upconversion is a cornerstone of electromagnetic signal processing, analysis and detection. It is used to transfer energy and information from one frequency domain to another where transmission, modulation or detection is technically easier or more efficient. Optomechanical transduction is emerging as a flexible approach to coherent frequency upconversion; it has been successfully demonstrated for conversion from radio- and microwaves (kHz to GHz) to optical fields. Nevertheless, optomechanical transduction of multi-THz and mid-infrared signals remains an open challenge. Here, we uti…
