We show that surface plasmons of a two-dimensional Dirac metal such as graphene can be reflected by line-like perturbations hosting one-dimensional electron states. The reflection originates from a strong enhancement of the local optical conductivity caused by optical transitions involving these bound states. We propose that the bound states can be systematically created, controlled, and liquidated by an ultranarrow electrostatic gate. Using infrared nanoimaging, we obtain experimental evidence for the locally enhanced conductivity of graphene induced by a carbon nanotube gate, which supports this theoretical concept.
Motivated by the recent emergence of a new class of anisotropic 2D materials, we examine their electromagnetic modes and demonstrate that a broad class of the materials can host highly directional hyperbolic plasmons. Their propagation direction can be manipulated on-the-spot by gate doping, enabling hyperbolic beams reflection, refraction and bending. The realization of these natural 2D hyperbolic media opens up a new avenue in dynamic control of hyperbolic plasmons not possible in the 3D version.
We have studied microwave response of a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system (2DES) contacted by two side electrodes. Using kinetic inductance of the 2DES and inter-electrode capacitance, we have constructed a subwavelength 2D plasmonic resonator. We have shown that the resonant frequency of this circuit can be controlled by 2D electron density, external magnetic field, or size of the electrodes. This opens up possibilities for using arrays of plasmonic circuits as tunable components in different frequency ranges.
We identify a possible mechanism of the plasmon instabilities in periodically gated two-dimensional electron systems with a modulated electron density (plasmonic crystals) under direct current. The instability occurs due to the amplified reflection of the small density perturbations from the gated/ungated boundaries under the proper phase matching conditions between the crystal unit cells. Based on the transfer-matrix formalism, we derive the generic dispersion equation for the travelling plasmons in these structures. Its solution in the hydrodynamic limit shows that the threshold drift veloci…
We propose the concept, synthesis, analysis, and design of graphene-based plasmonic tunable low-pass filters operating in the THz band. The proposed structure is composed of a graphene strip transferred onto a dielectric and a set of polysilicon DC gating pads located beneath it. This structure implements a stepped impedance low-pass filter for the propagating surface plasmons by adequately controlling the guiding properties of each strip section through graphene's field effect. A synthesis procedure is presented to design filters with desired specifications in terms of cut-off frequency, in-b…
In this work is comprising of simulation results of amorphous Si (a-Si) solar cell, in which ITO was used as an anti-reflection coating (ARC). The thickness of ITO was optimized (65 nm) to achieve better performance for spectral region of 350-800 nm. The reflectivity of the solar cell using ITO and SiNx as an ARC were compared. The result is found similar. Further to enhance the light absorption in a-Si, silver nano hemispherical back reflector was used. And it was found that the average absorption by the a-Si has been improved to ~80% by using ITO and hemi spherical nano structured back refle…
By means of high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, we investigate the low-energy excitation spectrum of transition-metal monopnictides hosting Weyl fermions. We observe gapped plasmonic modes in (001)-oriented surfaces of single crystals of NbAs and TaAs at 66 and 68 meV, respectively. Our findings are consistent with theory and we estimate an effective Coulomb interaction strength $α_{\rm eff}\approx0.41$ for both samples. We also demonstrate that the modification of the surface of transition-metal monopnictides by the adsorption of chemical species (in our case, oxygen and hydroc…
We propose multiple approaches for controlling Wien's displacement law in the near-field leading to narrowband, tunable, spatially-coherent high temperature thermal sources. We show that narrowband super-planckian thermal emission relevant to the wavelength ranges for near-field thermophotovoltaics can be achieved by utilizing engineered plasmonic states of metals with a high melting point. Along with conventional thin film surface plasmon polaritons of high temperature plasmonic metals, we also introduce multiple different approaches to narrowband near field thermal emission a) epsilon-near-z…
Photonic crystals and metamaterials have emerged as two classes of tailorable materials that enable precise control of light. Plasmonic crystals, which can be thought of as photonic crystals fabricated from plasmonic materials, Bragg scatter incident electromagnetic waves from a repeated unit cell. However, plasmonic crystals, like metamaterials, are composed of subwavelength unit cells. Here, we study terahertz plasmonic crystals of several periods in a two dimensional electron gas. This plasmonic medium is both extremely subwavelength ($\approx λ/100$) and reconfigurable through the applicat…
We present the experimental realization of ordered arrays of hyper-doped silicon nanodisks, which exhibit a localized surface plasmon resonance. The plasmon is widely tunable in a spectral window between 2 and 5 $μ$m by adjusting the free carrier concentration between 10$^{20}$ and 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-3}$. We show that strong infrared light absorption can be achieved with all-silicon plasmonic metasurfaces employing nano-structures with dimensions as low as 100\,nm in diameter and 23 nm in height. Our numerical simulations show an excellent agreement with the experimental data and provide physical…
Coupling between tuneable broadband modes of an array of plasmonic metamolecules and a vibrational mode of carbonyl bond of poly(methyl methacrylate) is shown experimentally to produce a Fano resonance, which can be tuned in situ by varying the polarization of incident light. The interaction between the plasmon modes and the molecular resonance is investigated using both rigorous electromagnetic calculations and a quantum mechanical model describing the quantum interference between a discrete state and two continua. The predictions of the quantum mechanical model are in good agreement with the…
Metamaterials and plasmonics are powerful tools for unconventional manipulation and harnessing of light. Metamaterials can be engineered to possess intriguing properties lacking in natural materials, such as negative refractive index. Plasmonics offers capabilities to confine light in subwavelength dimensions and to enhance light-matter interactions. Recently,graphene-based plasmonics has revealed emerging technological potential as it features large tunability, higher field-confinement and lower loss compared to metal-based plasmonics. Here,we introduce hybrid structures comprising graphene p…
Plasmonic detectors have the potential to provide a method of rapid spectroscopy without the need of moving mirrors or gratings. Previous measurements have demonstrated frequency tunable detection based on plasmonic excitations, however these devices were either small area, polarization dependent and/or required e-beam lithography. We demonstrate that large area high sensitivity THz plasmonic detection can be achieved using self-assembly nanosphere lithography. We achieve a submicron feature size grid covering a detector area of 4 mm^2. The absorbance at the fundamental, third and 5th harmonic…
Optoelectronic functionalities of photodection and light harnessing rely on the band-to-band excitation of semiconductors, thus the spectral response of the devices is dictated and limited by their bandgap. A novel approach, free from this restriction, is to harvest the energetic electrons generated by the relaxation of a plasmonic resonance in the vicinity of a metal-semiconductor junction. In this configuration, the optoelectronic and spectral response of the detectors can be designed ad hoc just by tailoring the topology of metal structures, which has tremendous applications in solar energy…
A theory of light reflection and transmission by an optically thin nanocomposite slab which contains randomly distributed metal nanoparticles (NPs) is developed. The underlying model takes into account the reflection of light scattered by NPs from the slab boundaries, enhanced decay of localized surface plasmons in dense NP arrays and light scattering at the slab surface -- the factors which are beyond the scope of the Maxwell Garnett approximation. It is demonstrated that the first two effects lead to broadband perfect absorption observed in such nanocomposites, whereas the last one is respon…
Enhancing the interaction strength between graphene and light is an important objective for those seeking to make graphene a relevant material for future optoelectronic applications. Plasmonic modes in graphene offer an additional pathway of directing optical energy into the graphene sheet, while at the same time displaying dramatically small optical confinement factors that make them an interesting means of coupling light to atomic or molecular emitters. Here we show that graphene plasmonic nanoresonators can be placed a quarter wavelength from a reflecting surface and electronically tuned to…
The unique gate-voltage dependent optical properties of graphene make it a promising electrically-tunable plasmonic material. In this work, we proposed in-situ control of the polarization of nanoantennas by combining plasmonic structures with an electrostatically tunable graphene monolayer. The tunable polarizer is designed based on an asymmetric cross nanoantenna comprising two orthogonal metallic dipoles sharing the same feed gap. Graphene monolayer is deposited on a Si/SiO2 substrate, and inserted beneath the nanoantenna. Our modelling demonstrates that as the chemical potential is incremen…
Domain walls separating regions of AB and BA interlayer stacking in bilayer graphene have attracted attention as novel examples of structural solitons, topological electronic boundaries, and nanoscale plasmonic scatterers. We show that strong coupling of domain walls to surface plasmons observed in infrared nanoimaging experiments is due to topological chiral modes confined to the walls. The optical transitions among these chiral modes and the band continua enhance the local ac conductivity, which leads to plasmon reflection by the domain walls. The imaging reveals two kinds of plasmonic stand…
Two rich and vibrant fields of investigation, graphene physics and plasmonics, strongly overlap. Not only does graphene possess intrinsic plasmons that are tunable and adjustable, but a combination of graphene with noble-metal nanostructures promises a variety of exciting applications for conventional plasmonics. The versatility of graphene means that graphene-based plasmonics may enable the manufacture of novel optical devices working in different frequency ranges, from terahertz to the visible, with extremely high speed, low driving voltage, low power consumption and compact sizes. Here we r…
Nanoplasmonics exploits the coupling between light and collective electron density oscillations (plasmons) to bypass the stringent limits imposed by diffraction. This coupling enables confinement of light to sub-wavelength volumes and is usually exploited in nanostructured metals. Substantial efforts are being made at the current frontier of the field to employ electron systems in semiconducting and semimetallic materials since these add the exciting possibility of realizing electrically tunable and/or active nanoplasmonic devices. Here we demonstrate that a suitable design of the doping profi…
We present a proof of concept for a spectrally selective near-infrared (NIR) and short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) photodetector based on nanopatterned multilayer graphene intercalated with FeCl$_3$ (NPMLG-FeCl$_3$), enabling large modulation p-doping of graphene. The localized surface plasmons (LSPs) on the graphene sheets in NPMLG-FeCl$_3$ allow for electrostatic tuning of the photodetection in the NIR and SWIR regimes from $λ=1.3$ $μ$m to 3 $μ$m, which is out of range for nanopatterned monolayer graphene (NPG). Most importantly, the LSPs along with an optical cavity increase the absorbance f…
Using a realistic quantum master equation we show that the resonance fluorescence spectra of a two-level artificial atom (quantum dot) can be tuned by adjusting its photonic local density of states via biasing of one or more graphene monolayers. The structured photon reservoir is included using a photon Green function theory which fully accounts for the loss and dispersion. The field-driven Mollow triplet spectrum can be actively controlled by the graphene bias in the THz frequency regime. We also consider the effect of a dielectric support environment, and multiple graphene layers, on the emi…
Among its many outstanding properties, graphene supports terahertz surface plasma waves -- sub-wavelength charge density oscillations connected with electromagnetic fields that are tightly localized near the surface[1,2]. When these waves are confined to finite-sized graphene, plasmon resonances emerge that are characterized by alternating charge accumulation at the opposing edges of the graphene. The resonant frequency of such a structure depends on both the size and the surface charge density, and can be electrically tuned throughout the terahertz range by applying a gate voltage[3,4]. The p…
Nanostructures of conventional metals offer manipulation of light at the nanoscale but are limited to static behavior due to their fixed material properties. To develop the next frontier of dynamic nanooptics and metasurfaces, we utilize the redox-tunable optical properties of conducting polymers, which were recently shown to be capable of sustaining plasmons in their most conducting oxidized state. Using nanodisks of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene:sulfate) (PEDOT:Sulf) as a model system, we present the first electrically tunable conducting polymer nanooptical antennas. In addition to repeate…
We present a comprehensive study of the reflection of normally incident plasmon waves from a low-conductivity 1D junction in a 2D conductive sheet. Rigorous analytical results are derived in the limits of wide and narrow junctions. Two types of phenomena determine the reflectance, the cavity resonances within the junction and the capacitive coupling between the leads. The resonances give rise to alternating strong and weak reflection but are vulnerable to plasmonic damping. The capacitive coupling, which is immune to damping, induces a near perfect plasmon reflection in junctions narrower than…
Coupling mechanical degrees of freedom with plasmonic resonances has potential applications in optomechanics, sensing, and active plasmonics. Here we demonstrate a suspended two-wire plasmonic nano-antenna acting like a nano-electrometer. The antenna wires are supported and electrically connected via thin leads without disturbing the antenna resonance. As a voltage is applied, equal charges are induced on both antenna wires. The resulting equilibrium between the repulsive Coulomb force and the restoring elastic bending force enables us to precisely control the gap size. As a result the resonan…
Simultaneous spatio-temporal confinement of energetic electron pulses to femtosecond and nanometer scales is a topic of great interest in the scientific community, given the potential impact of such development on a wide spectrum of scientific and industrial applications. For example, in ultrafast electron scattering, nanoscale probes would enable accurate maps of structural dynamics in materials with nanoscale heterogeneity, thereby understanding the role of boundaries and defects on macroscopic properties. On the other hand, advances in this field are mostly limited by the electron source br…

The physics of electrons, photons, and their plasmonic interactions changes greatly when one or more dimensions are reduced down to the nanometer scale. For example, graphene shows unique electrical, optical, and plasmonic properties, which are tunable through gating or chemical doping. Similarly, ultrathin metal films (UTMFs) down to atomic thickness can possess new quantum optical effects, peculiar dielectric properties, and predicted strong plasmons. However, truly two-dimensional plasmonics in metals has so far elusive because of the difficulty in producing large areas of sufficiently thin…
In the fast growing two-dimensional (2D) materials family, anisotropic 2D materials, with their intrinsic in-plane anisotropy, exhibit a great potential in optoelectronics. One such typical material is black phosphorus (BP), with a layer-dependent and highly tunable band gap. Such intrinsic anisotropy adds a new degree of freedom to the excitation, detection and control of light. Particularly, hyperbolic plasmons with hyperbolic q-space dispersion are predicted to exist in BP films, where highly directional propagating polaritons with divergent densities of states are hosted. Combined with a t…
The heat-shielding properties of random metasurface, composed of spherical or spheroidal nanoparticles with random displacements and/or random deformation, were theoretically investigated using the finite difference time domain method. The effective coverage was defined using the total area of nanoparticles in the metasurface, and the robustness of the near-infrared light reflection against randomness was investigated. When the effective coverage was high, the near-infrared light reflection was reduced by at least 20% in both nanoparticle arrangement and shape randomness compared to the hexago…
Tailoring critical light-matter coupling is a fundamental challenge of nanophotonics, impacting diverse fields from higher harmonic generation and energy conversion to surface-enhanced spectroscopy. Plasmonic perfect absorbers (PAs), where resonant antennas couple to their mirror images in adjacent metal films, have been instrumental for obtaining different coupling regimes by tuning the antenna-film distance. However, for on-chip uses, the ideal PA gap size can only match one wavelength, and wide range multispectral approaches remain challenging. Here, we introduce a new paradigm for plasmoni…
Plasmon in graphene possesses many unique properties. It originates from the collective motion of massless Dirac fermions and the carrier density dependence is distinctively different from conventional plasmons. In addition, graphene plasmon is highly tunable and shows strong energy confinement capability. Most intriguing, as an atom-thin layer, graphene and its plasmon are very sensitive to the immediate environment. Graphene plasmons strongly couple to polar phonons of the substrate, molecular vibrations of the adsorbates, and lattice vibrations of other atomically thin layers. In this revie…
We report on the observation of gate-tunable proximity-induced superconductivity and multiple Andreev reflections (MAR) in a bulk-insulating BiSbTeSe$_2$ topological insulator nanoribbon (TINR) Josephson junction (JJ) with superconducting Nb contacts. We observe a gate-tunable critical current ($I_C$) for gate voltages ($V_g$) above the charge neutrality point ($V_{CNP}$), with $I_C$ as large as 430 nA. We also observe MAR peaks in the differential conductance ($dI/dV$) versus DC voltage ($V_{dc}$) across the junction corresponding to sub-harmonic peaks (at $V_{dc} = V_n = 2Δ_{Nb}/en$, where $…

We consider a simple cubic array of metallic nanoparticles supporting extended collective plasmons that arise from the near-field dipolar interaction between localized surface plasmons in each nanoparticle. We develop a fully analytical quantum theory of the strong-coupling regime between these collective plasmons and photons resulting in plasmon polaritons in the nanoparticle array. Remarkably, we show that the polaritonic band gap and the dielectric function of the metamaterial can be significantly modulated by the polarization of light. We unveil how such an anisotropic behavior in the plas…
Acoustic vibrations at the nanoscale (GHz-THz frequencies) and their interactions with electrons, photons and other excitations are the heart of an emerging field in physics: nanophononics. The design of ultrahigh frequency acoustic-phonon transducers, with tunable frequency, and easy to integrate in complex systems is still an open and challenging problem for the development of acoustic nanoscopies and phonon lasers. Here we show how an optimized plasmonic metasurface can act as a high-frequency phonon transducer. We report pump-probe experiments in metasurfaces composed of an array of gold n…
We report a highly efficient tunable THz reflector in graphene. By applying a small gate voltage (up to 3 V), the reflectance of graphene is modulated from a minimum of 0.79% to a maximum of 33.4% using graphene/ionic liquid structures at room temperature, and the reflection tuning is uniform within a wide spectral range (0.1 - 1.5 THz). Our observation is explained by the Drude model, which describes the THz wave-induced intraband transition in graphene. This tunable reflectance of graphene may contribute to broadband THz mirrors, deformable THz mirrors, variable THz beam splitters and other …

Graphene's optical properties in the infrared and terahertz can be tailored and enhanced by patterning graphene into periodic metamaterials with sub-wavelength feature sizes. Here we demonstrate polarization sensitive and gate tunable photodetection in graphene nanoribbon arrays. The long-lived hybrid plasmon-phonon modes utilized are coupled excitations of electron density oscillations and substrate (SiO2) surface polar phonons. Their excitation by s-polarization leads to an in-resonance photocurrent an order of magnitude larger than the photocurrent observed for p-polarization, which excites…
We measured a change in the current transport of an antenna-coupled, multi-gate, GaAs/AlGaAs field-effect transistor when terahertz electromagnetic waves irradiated the transistor and attribute the change to bolometric heating of the electrons in the two-dimensional electron channel. The observed terahertz absorption spectrum indicates coherence between plasmons excited under adjacent biased device gates. The experimental results agree quantitatively with a theoretical model we developed that is based on a generalized plasmonic transmission line formalism and describes an evolution of the plas…
Metamaterials have recently established a new paradigm for enhanced light absorption in state-of-the-art photodetectors. Here, we demonstrate broadband, highly efficient, polarization-insensitive, and gate-tunable photodetection at room temperature in a novel metadevice based on gold/graphene Sierpinski carpet plasmonic fractals. We observed an unprecedented internal quantum efficiency up to 100% from the near-infrared to the visible range with an upper bound of optical detectivity of $10^{11}$ Jones and a gain up to $10^{6}$, which is a fingerprint of multiple hot carriers photogenerated in g…
A plasmonic nanostructure conceived with periodic layers of a doped semiconductor and passive semiconductor is shown to generate spontaneously surface plasmon polaritons thanks to its periodic nature. The nanostructure is demonstrated to behave as an effective material modeled by a simple dielectric function of ionic-crystal type, and possesses a fully tunable photonic band gap, with widths exceeding 50%, in the region extending from mid-infra-red to Tera-Hertz.
Visible surface plasmon resonances (SPRs) could be excited by TE wave polarization in one-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) coated by a graphene layer under the Kretschmann configuration. In this work, the plasmonic Bloch wave properties beyond Dirac points in a one-dimensional graphene-based photonic sensing structure have been numerically studied. We demonstrate that emergent plasmonic dips in the reflectance spectra of the suggested photonic device in the visible region exhibit tunable characteristics upon modulation of the chemical potential and the hopping parameter. The sensitivity of …
Heavily doped semiconductors have emerged as tunable low-loss plasmonic materials at mid-infrared frequencies. In this article we investigate nonlinear optical phenomena associated with high concentration of free electrons. We use a hydrodynamic description to study free electron dynamics in heavily doped semiconductors up to third-order terms, which are usually negligible for noble metals. We find that cascaded third-harmonic generation due to second-harmonic signals can be as strong as direct third-harmonic generation contributions even when the second-harmonic generation efficiency is zero.…
We theoretically study scattering process and superconducting triplet correlations in a graphene junction comprised of ferromagnet-RSO-superconductor in which RSO stands for a region with Rashba spin orbit interaction. Our results reveal spin-polarized subgap transport through the system due to an anomalous equal-spin Andreev reflection in addition to conventional back scatterings. We calculate equal- and opposite-spin pair correlations near the F-RSO interface and demonstrate direct link of the anomalous Andreev reflection and equal-spin pairings arised due to the proximity effect in the pres…
Nonlinear optical processes rely on the intrinsically weak interactions between photons enabled by their coupling with matter. Unfortunately, many applications in nonlinear optics are severely hindered by the small response of conventional materials. Metallic nanostructures partially alleviate this situation, as the large light enhancement associated with their localized plasmons amplifies their nonlinear response to record high levels. Graphene hosts long-lived, electrically tunable plasmons that also interact strongly with light. Here we show that the nonlinear polarizabilities of graphene n…
Crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) is a nonlocal transport phenomenon in a system of two normal metal (NM) leads connected to a superconductor (SC) that converts the electron like excitations in one metallic lead into hole like excitations in the other metallic lead. The scattering phenomena viz. electron tunneling (ET), electron reflection (ER) and Andreev reflection (AR) compete with CAR and reduce the probability of CAR generically. One of the experimentally realized proposals to observe CAR is to employ two ferromagnetic (FM) leads in antiparallel configuration connected to the SC by suppres…
By combining first principles theoretical calculations and experimental optical and structural characterization such as spectroscopic ellipsometry, X-ray spectroscopy, and electron microscopy, we study the dielectric permittivity and plasmonic properties of ultrathin TiN films at an atomistic level. Our results indicate a remarkably persistent metallic character of ultrathin TiN films and a progressive red shift of the plasmon energy as the thickness of the film is reduced. The microscopic origin of this trend is interpreted in terms of the characteristic two-band electronic structure of the s…
We report on reflection spectra of caesium atoms in close vicinity of a nanostructured metallic meta-surface. We show that the hyperfine sub-Doppler spectrum of the $6S_{1/2} - 6P_{3/2}$ resonance transition at 852 nm is strongly affected by the coupling to the plasmonic resonance of the nanostructure. Fine tuning of dispersion and positions of the atomic lines in the near-field of plasmonic metamaterials could have uses and implications for the atom-based metrology, sensing and the development of atom-on-a-chip devices.
Graphene plasmons provide a suitable alternative to noble-metal plasmons because they exhibit much larger confinement and relatively long propagation distances, with the advantage of being highly tunable via electrostatic gating. We report strong light- matter interaction assisted by graphene plasmons, and in particular, we predict unprecedented high decay rates of quantum emitters in the proximity of a carbon sheet, large vacuum Rabi splitting and Purcell factors, and extinction cross sections exceeding the geometrical area in graphene ribbons and nanometer-sized disks. Our results provide th…
