[Background] The "pasta" phase of nuclear matter may play an important role in the structure and evolution of neutron stars. Recent works suggest nuclear pasta has a high resistivity which could be explained by the presence of long lived topological defects. The defects act as impurities that decrease thermal and electrical conductivity of the pasta. [Purpose] To quantify how topological defects affect transport properties of nuclear pasta and estimate this effect using an impurity parameter $Q_{\text{imp}}$. [Methods] Contrast molecular dynamics simulations of up to 409\,600 nucleons arranged in parallel nuclear pasta slabs (perfect pasta) with simulations of pasta slabs connected by topological defects (impure pasta). From these simulations compare the viscosity and heat conductivity of perfect and impure pasta to obtain an effective impurity parameter $Q_{\text{imp}}$ due to the presence of defects. [Results] Both the viscosity and thermal conductivity calculated for both perfect and impure pasta are anisotropic, peaking along directions perpendicular to the slabs and reaching a minimum close to zero parallel to them. In our 409\,600 nucleon simulation topological defects connecting slabs of pasta reduce both the thermal conductivity and viscosity on average by about 37\%. We estimate an effective impurity parameter due to the defects of order $Q_{\text{imp}}\sim30$. [Conclusions] Topological defects in the pasta phase of nuclear matter have an effect similar to impurities in a crystal lattice. The irregularities introduced by the defects reduce the thermal and electrical conductivities and the viscosity of the system. This effect can be parameterized by a large impurity parameter $Q_{\text{imp}}\sim30$.
We investigate nuclear pasta structures at high temperatures in the framework of relativistic mean field model with Thomas-Fermi approximation. Typical pasta structures (droplet, rod, slab, tube, and bubble) are obtained, which form various crystalline configurations. The properties of those nuclear pastas are examined in a three-dimensional geometry with reflection symmetry, where the optimum lattice constants are fixed by reproducing the droplet/bubble density that minimizes the free energy adopting spherical or cylindrical approximations for Wigner-Seitz cells. It is found that different cr…

We find that the abundance of large clusters of nucleons in neutron-rich matter at sub-nuclear density is greatly reduced by finite temperature effects when matter is close to beta-equilibrium. Large nuclei and exotic non-spherical nuclear configurations called pasta, favored in the vicinity of the transition to uniform matter at $T=0$, dissolve at relatively low temperature. For matter close to beta-equilibrium we find that the pasta melting temperature is $T_m^β\simeq 4\pm 1$~MeV for realistic equations of state. The mechanism for pasta dissolution is discussed, and in general $T_m^β$ is sho…
Nuclear clusters or voids in the inner crust of neutron stars were predicted to have various shapes collectively nicknamed nuclear pasta. The recent review in Ref. \cite{Lopez1} by López, Dorso and Frank summarized their systematic investigations into properties especially the morphological and thermodynamical phase transitions of the nuclear pasta within a Classical Molecular Dynamics model, providing further stimuli to find more observational evidences of the predicted nuclear pasta in neutron stars.
We study the transport properties of nuclear pasta for a wide range of density, temperature and proton fractions, relevant for different astrophysical scenarios adopting a quantum molecular dynamics model. In particular, we estimate the values of shear viscosity as well as electrical and thermal conductivities by calculating the static structure factor $S(q)$ using simulation data. In the density and temperature range where the pasta phase appears, the static structure factor shows irregular behavior. The presence of a slab phase greatly enhances the peak in $S(q)$. However, the effect of irre…
Nonuniform structure of low-density nuclear matter, known as nuclear pasta, is expected to appear not only in the inner crust of neutron stars but also in core-collapse supernova explosions and neutron-star mergers. We perform fully three-dimensional calculations of inhomogeneous nuclear matter and neutron-star matter in the low-density region using the Thomas-Fermi approximation. The nuclear interaction is described in the relativistic mean-field approach with the point-coupling interaction, where the meson exchange in each channel is replaced by the contact interaction between nucleons. We i…
In this Review we study the nuclear pastas as they are expected to be formed in neutron star cores. We start with a study of the pastas formed in nuclear matter (composed of protons and neutrons), we follow with the role of the electron gas on the formation of pastas, and we then investigate the pastas in neutron star matter (nuclear matter embedded in an electron gas).
Background: Nuclear pasta phases, present in the inner crust of neutron stars, are associated with nucleonic matter at sub-saturation densities arranged in regular shapes. Those complex phases, residing in a layer which is approximately 100 m thick, impact many features of neutron stars. Theoretical quantum-mechanical simulations of nuclear pasta are usually carried out in finite 3D boxes assuming periodic boundary conditions (PBC). The resulting solutions are affected by spurious finite-size effects. Purpose: In order to remove spurious finite-size effects, it is convenient to employ twist-av…
Despite their astrophysical relevance, nuclear pasta phases are relatively unstudied at high temperatures. We present molecular dynamics simulations of symmetric nuclear matter with several topologies of `lasagna' at a range of temperatures to study the pasta-uniform transition. Using the Minkowski functionals we quantify trends in the occupied volume, surface area, mean breadth, and Euler characteristic. The amplitude of surface displacements of the pasta increase with temperature which produce short lived topological defects such as holes and filaments near melting, resulting in power laws f…
Nuclear pasta, with nucleons arranged into tubes, sheets, or other complex shapes, is expected in core collapse supernovae (SNe) at just below nuclear density. We calculate the additional opacity from neutrino-pasta coherent scattering using molecular dynamics simulations. We approximately include this opacity in simulations of SNe. We find that pasta slows neutrino diffusion and greatly increases the neutrino signal at late times of 10 or more seconds after stellar core collapse. This signal, for a galactic SN, should be clearly visible in large detectors such as Super-Kamiokande.
The elastic properties of neutron star crusts are relevant for a variety of currently observable or near-future electromagnetic and gravitational wave phenomena. These phenomena may depend on the elastic properties of nuclear pasta found in the inner crust. We present large scale classical molecular dynamics simulations where we deform nuclear pasta. We simulate idealized samples of nuclear pasta and describe their breaking mechanism. We also deform nuclear pasta that is arranged into many domains, similar to what is known for the ions in neutron star crusts. Our results show that nuclear past…
The interior of a neutron star is expected to exhibit different states of matter. In particular, complex non-spherical configurations known as `pasta' phases may exist at the highest densities in the inner crust, potentially having an impact on different neutron-star phenomena. We study the properties of the pasta phase and the uncertainties in the pasta observables which are due to our incomplete knowledge of the nuclear energy functional. To this aim, we employed a compressible liquid-drop model approach with surface parameters optimised either on experimental nuclear masses or theoretical c…
Nuclear pasta, that is an inhomogeneous distribution of nuclear matter characterised by non-spherical clustered structures, is expected to occur in a narrow spatial region at the bottom of the inner crust of neutron stars, but the width of the pasta layer is strongly model dependent. In the framework of a compressible liquid-drop model, we use Bayesian inference to analyse the constraints on the sub-saturation energy functional and surface tension imposed by both ab-initio chiral perturbation theory calculations and experimental measurements of nuclear masses. The posterior models are used to …
We investigate the nuclear pasta phases in neutron star crusts by conducting a large number of three-dimensional Hartree-Fock+BCS calculations at densities leading to the crust-core transition. We survey the shape parameter space of pasta at constant pressure. Spaghetti, waffles, lasagna, bi-continuous phases and cylindrical holes occupy local minima in the resulting Gibbs energy surfaces. The bi-continuous phase, in which both the neutron gas and nuclear matter extend continuously in all dimensions and therefore protons are delocalized, appears over a large range of depths. Our results suppor…
The direct URCA process of rapid neutrino emission can occur in nonuniform nuclear pasta phases that are expected in the inner crust of neutron stars. Here, the periodic potential for a nucleon in nuclear pasta allows momentum conservation to be satisfied for direct URCA reactions. We improve on earlier work by modeling a rich variety of pasta phases (gnocchi, waffle, lasagna, and anti-spaghetti) with large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the neutrino luminosity due to direct URCA reactions in nuclear pasta can be 3 to 4 orders of magnitude larger than that from the modified…
Cold and isospin-symmetric nuclear matter at sub-saturation densities is known to form the so-called pasta structures, which, in turn, are known to undergo peculiar phase transitions. Here we investigate if such pastas and their phase changes survive in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter, and whether the symmetry energy of such pasta configurations is connected to the isospin content, the morphology of the pasta and to the phase transitions. We find that indeed pastas are formed in isospin asymmetric systems with proton to neutron ratios of x=0.3, 0.4 and 0.5, densities in the range of 0.05 1/f…
We explore the properties of nuclear pasta appearing in supernova matter, i.e., matter at finite temperature with a fixed proton fraction. The pasta phases with a series of geometric shapes are studied using the compressible liquid-drop (CLD) model, where nuclear matter separates into a dense liquid phase of nucleons and a dilute gas phase of nucleons and $α$ particles. The equilibrium conditions for two coexisting phases are derived by minimization of the total free energy including the surface and Coulomb contributions, which are clearly different from the Gibbs conditions for phase equilibr…
Nuclear pasta topology is an essential ingredient to determine transport properties in the inner crust of neutron stars. We perform semi-classical molecular dynamics simulations of nuclear pasta for proton fractions $Y_p=0.30$ and $Y_p=0.40$ near one third of nuclear saturation density, $n=0.05\,\mathrm{fm}^{-3}$, at a temperature $T=1.0\,\mathrm{MeV}$. Our simulations are, to our knowledge, the largest nuclear pasta simulations to date and contain up to $3\,276\,800$ nucleons in the $Y_p=0.30$ and $819\,200$ nucleons in the $Y_p=0.40$ case. An algorithm to determine which nucleons are part of…
Pairing effects in non-uniform nuclear matter, surrounded by electrons, are studied in the protoneutron star early stage and in other conditions. The so-called nuclear pasta phases at subsaturation densities are solved in a Wigner-Seitz cell, within the Thomas-Fermi approximation. The solution of this problem is important for the understanding of the physics of a newly born neutron star after a supernova explosion. It is shown that the pasta phase is more stable than uniform nuclear matter on some conditions and the pairing force relevance is studied in the determination of these stable phases…
Nuclear density functional theory (DFT) is the tool of choice in describing properties of complex nuclei and intricate phases of bulk nucleonic matter. It is a microscopic approach based on an energy density functional representing the nuclear interaction. An attractive feature of nuclear DFT is that it can be applied to both finite nuclei and pasta phases appearing in the inner crust of neutron stars. While nuclear pasta clusters in a neutron star can be easily characterized through their density distributions, the level of clustering of nucleons in a nucleus can often be difficult to assess.…
In the framework of the relativistic mean field model with Thomas-Fermi approximation, we study the structures of low density nuclear matter in a three-dimensional geometry with reflection symmetry. The numerical accuracy and efficiency are improved by expanding the mean fields according to fast cosine transformation and considering only one octant of the unit cell. The effect of finite cell size is treated carefully by searching for the optimum cell size. Typical pasta structures (droplet, rod, slab, tube, and bubble) arranged in various crystalline configurations are obtained for both fixed …
Exotic non-spherical configurations of nuclei, known as ``pasta" phases, are expected to be present at the bottom of the inner crust of a neutron star. We study the properties of these configurations in catalyzed neutron stars within a compressible liquid-drop model approach, with surface parameters optimized to reproduce experimental nuclear masses. Our results show that the properties of the pasta phases exhibit strong model dependence. To estimate the model uncertainties, a Bayesian analysis is performed, combining information from nuclear physics experiments and chiral perturbation theoret…

This investigation explores the phononic thermal conductivity of nuclear star matter as it undergoes the "topological" transition to the "pasta" regime, and further down to the solid-liquid phase transition. The study was carried out using molecular dynamics simulations with nuclear potentials embedded in an effective (i.e. Thomas-Fermi) Coulomb potential. The thermal conductivity experiences a dramatic change within a narrow temperature interval around T=1 MeV. This change accomplishes the "pasta" breakdown during a heating process. The thermal conductivity by flipping protons' or neutrons' v…
In this work the low density regions of nuclear and neutron star matter are studied. The search for the existence of pasta phases in this region is performed within the context of the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, which incorporates quark degrees of freedom. Fixed proton fractions are considered, as well as nuclear matter in beta equilibrium at zero temperature. We discuss the recent attempts to better understand the surface energy in the coexistence phases regime and we present results that show the existence of the pasta phases subject to some choices of the surface energy coefficient. W…
A mixture of superconducting and superfluid nuclear liquids of protons coupled to the ultrarelativistic electron gas, and neutrons is considered. In the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) approximation, the energy-momentum (stress) tensor is derived, and the entrainment contribution is found in the explicit form. It is shown that this contribution generates a force density, when a superfluid velocity lag and the magnetic field are simultaneously present. This force may be important in the nuclear "pasta" phase in neutron stars, if the proton and neutron Cooper pairing in the pasta phase is taken into a…
