A locally compact quantum group of triangular matrices

We construct a one parameter deformation of the group of $2\times 2$ upper triangular matrices with determinant 1 using the twisting construction. An interesting feature of this new example of a locally compact quantum group is that the Haar measure is deformed in a non-trivial way. Also, we give a complete description of the dual $\cs$-algebra and the dual comultiplication.

Spectral properties of random triangular matrices

We prove the existence of the limiting spectral distribution (LSD) of symmetric triangular patterned matrices and also establish the joint convergence of sequences of such matrices. For the particular case of the symmetric triangular Wigner matrix, we derive expression for the moments of the LSD using properties of Catalan words. The problem of deriving explicit formulae for the moments of the LSD does not seem to be easy to solve for other patterned matrices. The LSD of the non-symmetric triangular Wigner matrix also does not seem to be easy to establish.

Some remarks on varieties of pairs of commuting upper triangular matrices and an interpretation of commuting varieties

It is known that the variety of pairs of n x n commuting upper triangular matrices isn't a complete intersection for infinitely many values of n; we show that there exists m such that this happens if and only if n > m. We also show that m < 18 and that it could be found by determining the dimension of the variety of pairs of commuting strictly upper triangular matrices. Then we define a natural map from the variety of pairs of commuting n x n matrices onto a subvariety defined by linear equations of the grassmannian of subspaces of codimension 2 of a vector space of dimension n x n.

Random matrices, continuous circular systems and the triangular operator

We present a Hilbert space approach to the limit joint *-distributions of complex independent Gaussian random matrices. For that purpose, we use a suitably defined family of creation and annihilation operators living in some direct integral of Hilbert spaces. These operators are decomposed in terms of continuous circular systems of operators acting between the fibers of the considered Hilbert space direct integral. Cut norm discontinuity of triangular truncation of graphons

The space of $L^p$ graphons, symmetric measurable functions $w: [0,1]^2 \to \mathbb{R}$ with finite $p$-norm, features heavily in the study of sparse graph limit theory. We show that the triangular cut operator $M_χ$ acting on this space is not continuous with respect to the cut norm. This is achieved by showing that as $n\to \infty$, the norm of the triangular truncation operator $\mathcal{T}_n$ on symmetric matrices equipped with the cut norm grows to infinity as well. We show that every self--adjoint matrix B of trace 0 can be realized as B=T+T^* for a nilpotent matrix T of norm no greater than K times the norm of B, for a constant K that is independent of matrix size.
