A phase of strong interacting matter with deconfined quarks is expected in the core of massive neutron stars. We investigate the quark deconfinement phase transition in cold (T = 0) and hot beta-stable hadronic matter. Assuming a first order phase transition, we calculate and compare the nucleation rate and the nucleation time due to quantum and thermal nucleation mechanisms. We show that above a threshold value of the central pressure a pure hadronic star (HS) (i.e. a compact star with no fraction of deconfined quark matter) is metastable to the conversion to a quark star (QS) (i.e. a hybrid star or a strange star). This process liberates an enormous amount of energy, of the order of 10^{53}~erg, which causes a powerful neutrino burst, likely accompanied by intense gravitational waves emission, and possibly by a second delayed (with respect to the supernova explosion forming the HS) explosion which could be the energy source of a powerful gamma-ray burst (GRB). This stellar conversion process populates the QS branch of compact stars, thus one has in the Universe two coexisting families of compact stars: pure hadronic stars and quark stars. We introduce the concept of critical mass M_{cr} for cold HSs and proto-hadronic stars (PHSs), and the concept of limiting conversion temperature for PHSs. We show that PHSs with a mass M < M_{cr} could survive the early stages of their evolution without decaying to QSs. Finally, we discuss the possible evolutionary paths of proto-hadronic stars.
Quark matter with only $u$ and $d$ quarks ($ud$QM) might be the ground state of baryonic matter at large baryon number $A>A_{\rm min}$. With $A_{\rm min}\gtrsim 300$, this has no direct conflict with the stability of ordinary nuclei. An intriguing test of this scenario is to look for quantum nucleation of $ud$QM inside neutron stars due to their large baryon densities. In this paper, we study the transition rate of cold neutron stars to $ud$ quark stars ($ud$QSs) and the astrophysical implications, considering the relevant theoretical uncertainties and observational constraints. It turns out t…
We study a possible mechanism for astrophysical jet production from a neutron star composed by a partially bosonized npe-gas. We obtain that the expulsion of a stable stream of matter might be triggered by the quantum magnetic collapse of one or various components of the gas, while its collimation is due to the formation of a strong self-generated magnetic field.
The number of events observed in neutrino telescopes depends on the neutrino fluxes in the Earth, their absorption while crossing the Earth and their interaction in the detector. In this paper, we investigate the impact of the QCD dynamics at high energies on the energy dependence of the average inelasticity and angular dependence of the absorption probability during the neutrino propagation through the Earth, as well in the determination of the properties of the incident astrophysical neutrino flux. Moreover, the number of events at the IceCube and IceCube - Gen2 are estimated considering dif…
We explore inferences on ultrahigh energy cosmic ray (UHECR) source environments -- constrained by the spectrum and composition of UHECRs and non-observation of extremely high energy neutrinos -- and their implications for the observed high energy astrophysical neutrino spectrum. We find acceleration mechanisms producing power-law CR spectra~$\propto E^{-2}$ are compatible with UHECR data, if CRs at high rigidities are in the quasi-ballistic diffusion regime as they escape their source environment. Both gas-dominated and photon-dominated source environments are able to account for UHECR observ…
We study the role of pions in hot dense matter encountered in astrophysics. We find that strong interactions enhance the number density of negatively charged pions and that this enhancement can be calculated reliably for a relevant range of density and temperature using the virial expansion. We assess the influence of pions and muons on the equation of state (EOS) and weak interaction rates in hot dense matter. We find that thermal pions increase the proton fraction and soften the EOS. We also find that charged current weak reactions involving pions and muons $\barν_μ+μ^- \rightarrow π$ and $ν…
We present an analysis of Murchison Widefield Array radio telescope data from $ω$ Cen, possibly a stripped dwarf spheroidal galaxy core captured by our Galaxy. Recent interpretations of Fermi-LAT $γ$-ray data by Brown {\it et al.} (2019) and Reynoso-Cordova {\it et al.} (2019) suggest that $ω$ Cen may contain significant Dark Matter. We utilise their best-fit Dark Matter annihilation models, and an estimate of the magnetic field strength in $ω$ Cen, to calculate the expected radio synchrotron signal from annihilation, and show that one can usefully rule out significant parts of the magnetic fi…
We investigate interacting quark matter (IQM), including the perturbative QCD correction and color superconductivity, for both up-down quark matter ($ud$QM) and strange quark matter (SQM). We first derive an equation of state (EOS) unifying all cases by a simple reparametrization and rescaling, through which we manage to maximally reduce the number of degrees of freedom. We find, in contrast to the conventional EOS $p=1/3(ρ-4B_{\rm eff})$ for non-interacting quark matter, that taking the extreme strongly interacting limit on the unified IQM EOS gives $p=ρ-2B_{\rm eff}$, where $B_{\rm eff}$ is …
Hyperons are essential constituents in the neutron star interior. The poorly-known hyperonic interaction is a source of uncertainty for studying laboratory hypernuclei and neutron star observations. In this work, we perform Bayesian inference of phenomenological hyperon-nucleon interactions using the tidal-deformability measurement of the GW170817 binary neutron star merger as detected by LIGO/Virgo and the mass-radius measurements of PSR J0030+0541 and PSR J0740+6620 as detected by NICER. The analysis is based on a set of stiff relativistic neutron-star-matter equation of states with hyperons…
The first inspiral of two neutron stars observed in gravitational waves was remarkably close, allowing the kind of simultaneous gravitational wave and electromagnetic observation that had not been expected for several years. Their merger, followed by a gamma-ray burst and a kilonova, was observed across the spectral bands of electromagnetic telescopes. These GW and electromagnetic observations have led to dramatic advances in understanding short gamma-ray bursts; determining the origin of the heaviest elements; and determining the maximum mass of neutron stars. From the imprint of tides on the…
In the crust of a neutron star, global torsional oscillations could occur in two elastic layers. The outer and inner layers are composed of spherical and cylindrical nuclei and of cylindrical holes (tubes) and spherical holes (bubbles), respectively, while between these two layers, a phase of slab-like (lasagna) nuclei with vanishingly small elasticity is sandwiched. In this work, we update systematic calculations of the eigenfrequencies of the fundamental oscillations in the inner layer by newly allowing for the presence of tubes. We find that the frequencies still depend strongly on the slop…
The secondary component of the GW190814 event left us with a question, "whether it is a supermassive neutron star or lightest black-hole?". Recently, Fattoyev et al. have obtained an energy density functional (EDF) named as BigApple, which reproduces the mass of the neutron star is 2.60 $M_\odot$ which is well consistent with GW190814 data. This study explores the properties of finite nuclei, nuclear matter, and neutron stars by using the BigApple EDF along with four well-known relativistic mean-field forces, namely NL3, G3, IOPB-I, and FSUGarnet. The finite nuclei properties like binding ener…
Two of the dominant channels to produce merging stellar-mass black-hole binaries are believed to be the isolated evolution of binary stars in the field and dynamical formation in star clusters. The first reported black-hole binary event from the third LIGO/Virgo observing run (GW190412) is unusual in that it has unequal masses, nonzero effective spin, and nonzero primary spin at 90\% confidence interval. We show that this event should be exceedingly rare in the context of both the field and cluster formation scenarios. Interpreting GW190412 as a remnant of a previous black-hole merger provides…
We explore the effect of forcing on the linear shear flow or plane Couette flow, which is also the background flow in the very small region of the Keplerian accretion disk. We show that depending on the strength of forcing and boundary conditions suitable for the systems under consideration, the background plane shear flow and, hence, accretion disk velocity profile modifies to parabolic flow, which is plane Poiseuille flow or Couette-Poiseuille flow, depending on the frame of reference. In the presence of rotation, plane Poiseuille flow becomes unstable at a smaller Reynolds number under pure…
The first neutron star (NS) merger observed by advanced LIGO and Virgo, GW170817, and its fireworks of electromagnetic counterparts across the entire electromagnetic spectrum marked the beginning of multi-messenger astronomy and astrophysics with gravitational waves. The ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared emission was consistent with being powered by the radioactive decay of nuclei synthesized in the merger ejecta by the rapid neutron capture process (r-process). Starting from an outline of the inferred properties of this 'kilonova' emission, I discuss possible astrophysical sites for r-p…
The discovery of the gravitational-wave source GW150914 with the Advanced LIGO detectors provides the first observational evidence for the existence of binary black-hole systems that inspiral and merge within the age of the Universe. Such black-hole mergers have been predicted in two main types of formation models, involving isolated binaries in galactic fields or dynamical interactions in young and old dense stellar environments. The measured masses robustly demonstrate that relatively "heavy" black holes ($\gtrsim 25\, M_\odot$) can form in nature. This discovery implies relatively weak mass…
The Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) recently measured the mass and equatorial radius of the isolated neutron star PSR J0030+0451. We use these measurements to infer the moment of inertia, the quadrupole moment, and the surface eccentricity of an isolated neutron star for the first time, using relations between these quantities that are insensitive to the unknown equation of state of supranuclear matter. We also use these results to forecast the moment of inertia of neutron star A in the double pulsar binary J0737-3039, a quantity anticipated to be directly measured in the co…
Magnetic reconnection, topological change in magnetic fields, is a fundamental process in magnetized plasmas. It is associated with energy release in regions of magnetic field annihilation, but this is only one facet of this process. Astrophysical flows normally have very large Reynolds numbers and are expected to be turbulent, in agreement with observations. In strong turbulence magnetic lines constantly reconnect everywhere at all scales, making magnetic reconnection an intrinsic part of turbulent cascade. We note that this is inconsistent with the usual practice of regarding magnetic lines …
Determinants of the second-rank tensors stand useful in forming generally invariant terms as in the case of the volume element of the gravitational actions. Here, we extend the action of the matter fields by an arbitrary function $f(D)$ of the determinants of their energy-momentum, and the metric, $D=|\textbf{det}.T|/|\textbf{det}.g|$. We derive the gravitational field equations and examine the nonlinear terms induced by the determinant, specifically, the inverse of the energy-momentum tensor. We also show that these extensions require a nonzero stress-energy tensor for the vacuum. We propose …
Observations have found black holes spanning ten orders of magnitude in mass across most of cosmic history. The Kerr black hole solution is however provisional as its behavior at infinity is incompatible with an expanding universe. Black hole models with realistic behavior at infinity predict that the gravitating mass of a black hole can increase with the expansion of the universe independently of accretion or mergers, in a manner that depends on the black hole's interior solution. We test this prediction by considering the growth of supermassive black holes in elliptical galaxies over $0<z\le…
