We show that by integrating out the electric field and incorporating proper boundary conditions, a semiclassical Boltzmann equation can describe electron transport properties, continuously from the diffusive to ballistic regimes. General analytical formulas of the conductance in $D=1,2,3$ dimensions are obtained, which recover the Boltzmann-Drude formula and Landauer-Büttiker formula in the diffusive and ballistic limits, respectively. This intuitive and efficient approach can be applied to investigate the interplay of system size and impurity scattering in various charge and spin transport phenomena.
We present a Monte Carlo analysis of shot-noise suppression due to long-range Coulomb interaction in semiconductor samples under a crossover between diffusive and ballistic transport regimes. By varying the mean time between collisions we find that the strong suppression observed under the ballistic regime persists under quasi-ballistic conditions, before being washed out when a complete diffusive regime is reached.
Conventional transport theory focuses on either the diffusive or ballistic regimes and neglects the crossover region between the two. In the presence of spin-orbit coupling, the transport equations are known only in the diffusive regime, where the spin precession angle is small. In this paper, we develop a semiclassical theory of transport valid throughout the diffusive - ballistic crossover of a special SU(2) symmetric spin-orbit coupled system. The theory is also valid in the physically interesting regime where the spin precession angle is large. We obtain exact expressions for the density a…
A linear theory of electron transport is developed for a system of two ideal quantum wires, of length L, coupled by tunneling and Coulomb interaction. The interaction of electrons with acoustical phonons is included and the results are valid in both the ballistic and diffusive regime. In the {\it ballistic} regime, both tunneling and Coulomb drag lead to a {\it negative} transresistance R_{TR}, while in the {\it diffusive} regime the tunneling opposes the drag and leads to a {\it positive} R_{TR}. If L is smaller than the phase-breaking length, the tunneling leads to interference oscillations …
In this work, a modified, lumped element graphene field effect device model is presented. The model is based on the "Top-of-the-barrier" approach which is usually valid only for ballistic graphene nanotransistors. Proper modifications are introduced to extend the model's validity so that it accurately describes both ballistic and diffusive graphene devices. The model is compared to data already presented in the literature. It is shown that a good agreement is obtained for both nano-sized and large area graphene based channels. Accurate prediction of drain current and transconductance for both …
We study the effects of the long-range disorder potential and warping on the conductivity and mobility of graphene ribbons using the Landauer formalism and the tight-binding p-orbital Hamiltonian. We demonstrate that as the length of the structure increases the system undergoes a transition from the ballistic to the diffusive regime. This is reflected in the calculated electron density dependencies of the conductivity and the mobility. In particular, we show that the mobility of graphene ribbons varies as mu(n) n^(-lambda), with 0<lambda<0.5. The exponent lambda depends on the length of the sy…
The radial thermal rectification in the concentric silicon ring from ballistic to diffusive regime is investigated based on the phonon Boltzmann transport equation. In the ballistic and diffusive limits, the analytical solutions prove that there is no thermal rectification. In the ballistic-diffusive regime, the heat flux prefers to flow from the inner boundary to the outer boundary. Furthermore, as the characteristic length (the distance between two circular boundaries) increases from tens of nanometers to tens of microns, the thermal rectification ratio enhances first and then fades away gra…
We have calculated the temperature profiles for phonon heat transport in a suspended membrane with a radially symmetric heat source in the two extreme cases of either fully ballistic or fully diffusive transport. Theoretical results confirm that it is possible to distinguish these two transport mechanisms from the radial temperature profiles alone. Models are also compared to experimental data measured with 40 nm thick, free standing silicon nitride membranes below 1 K by using tunnel junction (SINIS) thermometers. The measured temperature profile is qualitatively in agreement with the ballist…
We report an experimental study of the quantum corrections to the longitudinal conductivity and the Hall coefficient of a low mobility, high density two-dimensional two-dimensional electron gas in a AlGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well in a wide temperature range (1.5 K - 110 K). This temperature range covers both the diffusive and the ballistic interaction regimes for our samples. It was therefore possible to study the crossover region for the longitudinal conductivity and the Hall effect.
The spin-Hall effect has recently attracted a lot of attention and a central question is whether the effect is due to the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction or due to spin-asymmetric scattering by extrinsic impurities. The objective of this paper is to shed light on this question using a new approach based on the non-equilibrium Green function (NEGF) formalism, which allows us to go continuously from the ballistic to the diffusive limit and we present approximate analytical expressions that describe our results fairly well. Our model suggests that a spin accumulation proportional to the current …
We propose to use l_0/(l_0+L) for the energy transmission covering both ballistic and diffusive regimes, where l_0 is mean free path and L is system length. This formula is applied to heat conduction in carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Calculations of thermal conduction show: (1) Thermal conductance at room temperature is proportional to the diameter of CNTs for single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) and to the square of diameter for multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs). (2) Interfaces play an important role in thermal conduction in CNTs due to the symmetry of CNTs vibrational modes. (3) When the phonon mean free path is …
The propagation of a heat pulse in a single crystal and across grain boundaries (GBs) is simulated using a concurrent atomistic-continuum method furnished with a coherent phonon pulse model. With a heat pulse constructed based on a Bose-Einstein distribution of phonons, this work has reproduced the phenomenon of phonon focusing in single and polycrystalline materials. Simulation results provide visual evidence that the propagation of a heat pulse in crystalline solids with or without GBs is partially ballistic and partially diffusive, i.e., there is a co-existence of ballistic and diffusive th…
Developing simplified, but accurate, theoretical approaches to treat heat transport on all length and time scales is needed to further enable scientific insight and technology innovation. Using a simplified form of the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE), originally developed for electron transport, we demonstrate how ballistic phonon effects and finite-velocity propagation are easily and naturally captured. We show how this approach compares well to the phonon BTE, and readily handles a full phonon dispersion and energy-dependent mean-free-path. This study of transient heat transport shows i) …
Ballistic phonon effects, arising on length scales comparable to the mean-free-path, result in non-diffusive heat flow and alter the thermal properties of materials. Simple theoretical models that accurately capture non-diffusive transport physics are valuable for experimental analysis, technology design, and providing physical insight. In this work, we utilize and extend the McKelvey-Shockley (McK-S) flux method, a simple and accurate framework, to investigate ballistic effects in transient phonon transport submitted to a spatially sinusoidal heating profile, simulating a transient thermal gr…
We study shot noise for generic quantum dots coupled to two leads and allow for an arbitrary strength of diffractive impurity scattering inside the dots. The ballistic quantum dots possess a mixed classical phase space, where regular and chaotic regions coexist. In absence of disorder, the noise is systematically suppressed below the universal value of fully chaotic systems, by an amount which varies with the positions of the leads. This suppression is due to the deterministic nature of transport through regular regions and along short chaotic trajectories, and disappears by increasing the sca…
The full counting statistics of the charge transport through an undoped graphene sheet in the presence of smooth disorder is studied. At the Dirac point both in clean and diffusive limits, transport properties of a graphene sample are described by the universal Dorokhov distribution of transmission probabilities. In the crossover regime, deviations from universality occur which can be studied analytically both on ballistic and diffusive sides. In the ballistic regime, we use a diagrammatic technique with matrix Green functions. For a diffusive system, the sigma model is applied. Our results ar…
We report an experimental study of quantum conductivity corrections in a low mobility, high density two-dimensional electron gas in a AlGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well in a wide temperature range (1.5K - 110K). This temperature range covers both the diffusive and the ballistic interaction regimes for our samples. It has been therefore possible to study the crossover between these regimes for both the longitudinal conductivity and the Hall effect. We perform a parameter free comparison of our experimental data for the longitudinal conductivity at zero magnetic field, the Hall coefficient, and the…
It is generally understood that Fourier's law does not describe ballistic phonon transport, which is important when the length of a material is similar to the phonon mean-free-path. Using an approach adapted from electron transport, we demonstrate that Fourier's law and the heat equation do capture ballistic effects, including temperature jumps at ideal contacts, and are thus applicable on all length scales. Local thermal equilibrium is not assumed, because allowing the phonon distribution to be out-of-equilibrium is important for ballistic and quasi-ballistic transport. The key to including t…
The quasiclassical theory of a nanosize point contacts (PC) between two ferromagnets is developed. The maximum available magnetoresistance values in PC are calculated for ballistic versus diffusive transport through the area of a contact. In the ballistic regime the magnetoresistance in excess of few hundreds percents is obtained for the iron-group ferromagnets. The necessary conditions for realization of so large magnetoresistance in PC, and the experimental results by Garcia et al are discussed

We demonstrate fractal noise in the quantum evolution of wave packets moving either ballistically or diffusively in periodic and quasiperiodic tight-binding lattices, respectively. For the ballistic case with various initial superpositions we obtain a space-time self-affine fractal $Ψ(x,t)$ which verify the predictions by Berry for "a particle in a box", in addition to quantum revivals. For the diffusive case self-similar fractal evolution is also obtained. These universal fractal features of quantum theory might be useful in the field of quantum information, for creating efficient quantum alg…
We study interaction-induced quantum correction to the conductivity tensor of electrons in two dimensions for arbitrary T tau, where T is the temperature and tau the transport mean free time. A general formula is derived, expressing the correction in terms of classical propagators ("ballistic diffusons"). The formalism is used to calculate the interaction contribution to the magnetoresistance in a classically strong transverse field and smooth disorder in the whole range of temperatures from the diffusive (T tau<<1) to the ballistic (T tau>1) regime.
Through an exact analysis using quantum Langevin dynamics, we demonstrate the crossover from ballistic to diffusive thermal transport in a harmonic chain with each site connected to Ohmic heat reservoirs. The temperatures of the two heat baths at the boundaries are specified from before whereas the temperatures of the interior heat reservoirs are determined self-consistently by demanding that in the steady state, on average, there is no heat current between any such (self-consistent) reservoir and the harmonic chain. Essence of our study is that the effective mean free path separating the ball…
Graphene nanoribbons and constrictions are envisaged as fundamental components of future carbon-based nanoelectronic and spintronic devices. At nanoscale, electronic effects in these devices depend heavily on the dimensions of the active channel and the nature of edges. Hence, controlling both these parameters is crucial to understand the physics in such systems. This review is about the recent progress in the fabrication of graphene nanoribbons and constrictions in terms of low temperature quantum transport. In particular, recent advancements using encapsulated graphene allowing for quantized…
Hydrodynamic phonon transport was recently predicted as an important regime for phonon transport in graphitic materials. Many of past studies on hydrodynamic phonon transport have focused on the cases where the hydrodynamic regime predominates over other regimes such that hydrodynamic features can be clearly observed. However, this often requires stringent conditions of temperature and sample size. In many cases, a single regime does not dominate other regimes, but all three regimes - ballistic, hydrodynamic, and diffusive regimes - exist to some extent. Here we assess the extent of three regi…
In this work, the heat vortexes in two-dimensional porous or ribbon structures are investigated based on the phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) under the Callaway model. First, the separate thermal effects of normal (N) scattering and resistive (R) scattering are investigated with frequency-independent assumptions. And then the heat vortexes in graphene are studied as a specific example. It is found that the heat vortexes can appear in both ballistic (rare R/N scattering) and hydrodynamic (N scattering dominates) regimes but disappear in the diffusive (R scattering dominates) regime. As…
On a high-mobility 2D electron gas we have observed, in strong magnetic fields (omega_{c} tau > 1), a parabolic negative magnetoresistance caused by electron-electron interactions in the regime of k_{B} T tau / hbar ~ 1, which is the transition from the diffusive to the ballistic regime. From the temperature dependence of this magnetoresistance the interaction correction to the conductivity delta sigma_{xx}^{ee}(T) is obtained in the situation of a long-range fluctuation potential and strong magnetic field. The results are compared with predictions of the new theory of interaction-induced magn…
There has been much interest in semiconductor superlattices because of showing very low thermal conductivities. This makes them especially suitable for applications in a variety of devices for thermoelectric generation of energy, heat control at the nanometric length scale, etc. Recent experiments have confirmed that the effective thermal conductivity of superlattices at room temperature have a minimum for very short periods (in the order of nanometers) as some kinetic calculations had anticipated previously. This work will show advances on a thermodynamic theory of heat transport in nanometri…
To develop effective thermal management strategies for GaN transistors, it is essential to accurately predict the device junction temperature. Since the width of the heat generation in the devices is comparable to phonon mean free paths of GaN, phonon ballistic transport exists and can significantly affect the heat transport process, which necessitates a thorough understanding of the influence of the phonon ballistic effects in GaN transistors. In this paper, the ballistic-diffusive phonon transport in GaN-on-SiC devices is examined by measuring the hotspot temperature using the thermoreflecta…
For electron transport in parallel-plane semiconducting structures, a model is developed that unifies ballistic and diffusive transport and thus generalizes the Drude model. The unified model is valid for arbitrary magnitude of the mean free path and arbitrary shape of the conduction band edge profile. Universal formulas are obtained for the current-voltage characteristic in the nondegenerate case and for the zero-bias conductance in the degenerate case, which describe in a transparent manner the interplay of ballistic and diffusive transport. The semiclassical approach is adopted, but quantum…
Transport properties through wide and short ballistic graphene junctions are studied in the presence of arbitrary dopings and magnetic fields. No dependence on the magnetic field is observed at the Dirac point for any current cumulant, just as in a classical diffusive system, both in normal-graphene-normal and normal-graphene-superconductor junctions. This pseudo-diffusive regime is however extremely fragile respect to doping at finite fields. We identify the crossovers to a field-suppressed and a normal ballistic transport regime in the magnetic field - doping parameter space, and provide a p…
We investigate the transport of electrons in disordered and pristine graphene devices. Fano shot noise, a standard metric to assess the mechanism for electronic transport in mesoscopic devices, has been shown to produce almost the same magnitude ($\approx 1/3$) in ballistic and diffusive graphene devices and is therefore of limited applicability. We consider a two-terminal geometry where the graphene flake is contacted by narrow metallic leads. We propose that the dependence of the conductance on the position of one of the leads, a conductance profile, can give us insight into the charge flow,…
Typical persistent current ($I_{typ}$) in a mesoscopic normal metal ring with disorder due to rough edges and random grain boundaries is calculated by a scattering matrix method. In addition, resistance of a corresponding metallic wire is obtained from the Landauer formula and the electron mean free path ($l$) is determined. If disorder is due to the rough edges, a ballistic persistent current $I_{typ} \simeq e v_F/L$ is found to coexist with the diffusive resistance ($ \propto L/l$), where $v_F$ is the Fermi velocity and $L \gg l$ is the ring length. This ballistic current is due to a single …
Using a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM), we investigate the Local Density of States (LDOS) of artificially fabricated normal metal nano-structures in contact with a superconductor. Very low temperature local spectroscopic measurements (100 mK) reveal the presence of well defined subgap peaks at energy |E|<Delta in the LDOS at various positions of the STM tip. Although no clear correlations between the LDOS and the shape of the samples have emerged, some of the peak features suggest they originate from quasi-particle bound states within the normal metal structures (De Gennes St James states…
We analyze the interplay between disorder and band structure in current perpendicular to the planes (CPP) giant magnetoresistance (GMR). We consider finite magnetic multilayers attached to pure crystalline leads, described by a tight-binding simple cubic two-band model (s-d). Several models of disorder are considered, including random on-site potentials, lattice distortions, impurities, vacancies, and cross-section fluctuations. Magneto-transport properties are calculated in the zero-temperature zero-bias limit, within the Landauer-Buttiker formalism. Using a very efficient numerical scatterin…
Improved fabrication techniques have enabled the possibility of ballistic transport and unprecedented spin manipulation in ultraclean graphene devices. Spin transport in graphene is typically probed in a nonlocal spin valve and is analyzed using spin diffusion theory, but this theory is not necessarily applicable when charge transport becomes ballistic or when the spin diffusion length is exceptionally long. Here, we study these regimes by performing quantum simulations of graphene nonlocal spin valves. We find that conventional spin diffusion theory fails to capture the crossover to the balli…
We study the ballistic-to-diffusive transition induced by the weak breaking of integrability in a boundary-driven XXZ spin-chain. Studying the evolution of the spin current density $\mathcal J^s$ as a function of the system size $L$, we show that, accounting for boundary effects, the transition has a non-trivial universal behavior close to the XX limit. It is controlled by the scattering length $L^*\propto V^{-2}$, where $V$ is the strength of the integrability breaking term. In the XXZ model, the interplay of interactions controls the emergence of a transient "quasi-ballistic" regime at lengt…
Motivated by the recent prediction of anisotropy in piezoresistance of ballistic graphene along longitudinal and transverse directions, we investigate the angular gauge factor of graphene in the ballistic and diffusive regimes using highly efficient quantum transport models. It is shown that the angular guage factor in both ballistic and diffusive graphene between $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ bears a sinusoidal relation with a periodicity of $π$ due to the reduction of six-fold symmetry into a two-fold symmetry as a result of applied strain. The angular gauge factor is zero at critical angles $…
Phonon-phonon interaction is systematically studied by nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formulism in momentum space at finite temperatures. Within the quasi-particle approximation, phonon frequency shift and lifetime are obtained from the retarded self-energy. The lowest order NEGF provides the same phonon lifetime as Fermi's golden rule. Thermal conductance is predicted by the Landauer formula with a phenomenological transmission function. The main advantage of our method is that it covers both ballistic and diffusive limits and thermal conductance of different system sizes can be easil…
Heat flow in nanomaterials is an important area of study, with both fundamental and technological implications. However, little is known about heat flow in two-dimensional (2D) devices or interconnects with dimensions comparable to the phonon mean free path (mfp). Here, we find that short, quarter-micron graphene samples reach ~35% of the ballistic heat conductance limit up to room temperature, enabled by the relatively large phonon mfp (~100 nm) in substrate-supported graphene. In contrast, patterning similar samples into nanoribbons (GNRs) leads to a diffusive heat flow regime that is contro…
This paper presents an analytical study of the coexistence of different transport regimes in quasi-one-dimensional surface-disordered waveguides (or electron conductors). To elucidate main features of surface scattering, the case of two open modes (channels) is considered in great detail. Main attention is paid to the transmission in dependence on various parameters of the model with two types of rough-surface profiles (symmetric and antisymmetric). It is shown that depending on the symmetry, basic mechanisms of scattering can be either enhanced or suppressed. As a consequence, different trans…
We investigate ballistic vibrational energy transport through optical phonon band in oligomeric chains in the presence of decoherence. An exact solution is obtained for the excitation density in the space-time representation in the continuous limit and this solution is used to characterize the energy transport time and intensity. Three transport mechanisms are identified such as ballistic, diffusive and directed diffusive regimes, occurring at different distances and time ranges. The crossover between the two diffusive regimes is continuous, while the switch between the ballistic and diffusive…
Ballistic spin transport is studied through electronic tuners with double stubs attached to them. The spins precess due to the spin-orbit interaction. Injected polarized spins can exit the structure polarized in the opposite direction. A nearly square-wave spin transmission, with values 1 and 0, can be obtained using a periodic system of symmetric stubs and changing their length or width. The gaps in the transmission can be widened using asymmetric stubs. An additional modulation is obtained upon combining stub structures with different values of the spin-orbit strength.
A ballistic strip of graphene (width W>> length L) connecting two normal metal contacts is known to have a minimum conductivity of 4e^{2}/pi h at the Dirac point of charge neutrality. We calculate what happens if one of the two contacts becomes superconducting. While the ballistic conductance away from the Dirac point is increased by Andreev reflection at the normal-superconductor (NS) interface, we find that the minimum conductivity stays the same. This is explained as a manifestation of pseudo-diffusive conduction at the Dirac point. As a generalization of our results for a ballistic system,…
We describe the influence of hard wall confinement and lateral dimension on the low temperature transport properties of long diffusive channels and ballistic crosses fabricated in an InSb/InxAl1-xSb heterostructure. Partially diffuse boundary scattering is found to play a crucial role in the electron dynamics of ballistic crosses and substantially enhance the negative bend resistance. Experimental observations are supported by simulations using a classical billiard ball model for which good agreement is found when diffuse boundary scattering is included.
We studied theoretically ballistic electronic transport in a proposed mesoscopic structure - Quantum Cable. Our results demonstrated that Qauntum Cable is a unique structure for the study of mesoscopic transport. As a function of Fermi energy, Ballistic conductance exhibits interesting stepwise features. Besides the steps of one or two quantum conductance units ($2e^2/h$), conductance plateaus of more than two quantum conductance units can also be expected due to the accidental degeneracies (crossings) of subbands. As structure parameters is varied, conductance width displays oscillatory prope…
We explore electrically injected, spin polarized transport in a ballistic two-dimensional electron gas. We augment the Buettiker-Landauer picture with a simple, but realistic model for spin-selective contacts to describe multimode reservoir-to-reservoir transport of ballistic spin 1/2 particles. Clear and unambiguous signatures of spin transport are established in this regime, for the simplest measurement configuration that demonstrates them directly. These new effects originate from spin precession of ballistic carriers; they exhibit strong dependence upon device geometry and vanish in the di…

Quantum conductance fluctuations are investigated in disordered 3D topological insulator quantum wires. Both experiments and theory reveal a new transport regime in a mesoscopic conductor, pseudo-ballistic transport, for which ballistic properties persist beyond the transport mean free path, characteristic of diffusive transport. It results in non-universal conductance fluctuations due to quasi-1D surface modes, as observed in long and narrow Bi$_2$Se$_3$ nanoribbons. Spin helical Dirac fermions in quantum wires retain pseudo-ballistic properties over an unusually broad energy range, due to st…
We study the magnetoconductance of topological insulator nanowires in a longitudinal magnetic field, including Aharonov-Bohm, Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak, perfectly conducting channel, and universal conductance fluctuation effects. Our focus is on predicting experimental behavior in single wires in the quantum limit where temperature is reduced to zero. We show that changing the Fermi energy $E_F$ can tune a wire from from ballistic to diffusive conduction and to localization. In both ballistic and diffusive single wires we find both Aharonov-Bohm and Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak oscillations with simi…
