Here, we show a method to reconstruct connectivity hypermatrices of a general hypergraph (without any self loop or multiple edge) using tensor. We also study the different spectral properties of these hypermatrices and find that these properties are similar for graphs and uniform hypergraphs. The representation of a connectivity hypermatrix that is proposed here can be very useful for the further development in spectral hypergraph theory.
We describe a general approach for computing generators for elimination ideals associated with matrix and hypermatrix spectral decomposition constraints. We derive from these generators iterative procedures for approximating the spectral decomposition of matrices and hypermatrices.
We present a spectral theory of hypergraphs that closely parallels Spectral Graph Theory. A number of recent developments building upon classical work has led to a rich understanding of "hyperdeterminants" of hypermatrices, a.k.a. multidimensional arrays. Hyperdeterminants share many properties with determinants, but the context of multilinear algebra is substantially more complicated than the linear algebra required to address Spectral Graph Theory (i.e., ordinary matrices). Nonetheless, it is possible to define eigenvalues of a hypermatrix via its characteristic polynomial as well as variati…
Our main result is an elementary derivation of the spectral decomposition of hypermatrices generated by arbitrary combinations of Kronecker products and direct sums of cubic side length 2
In our previous paper, we classified all $r$-uniform hypergraphs with spectral radius at most $(r-1)!\sqrt[r]{4}$, which directly generalizes Smith's theorem for the graph case $r=2$. It is nature to ask the structures of the hypergraphs with spectral radius slightly beyond $(r-1)!\sqrt[r]{4}$. For $r=2$, the graphs with spectral radius at most $\sqrt{2+\sqrt{5}}$ are classified by [{\em Brouwer-Neumaier, Linear Algebra Appl., 1989}]. Here we consider the $r$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ with spectral radius at most $(r-1)!\sqrt[r]{2+\sqrt{5}}$. We show that $H$ must have a quipus-structure, which …
The spectral theory of the normalized Laplacian for chemical hypergraphs is further investigated. The signless normalized Laplacian is introduced and it is shown that its spectrum for classical hypergraphs coincides with the spectrum of the normalized Laplacian for bipartite chemical hypergraphs. Furthermore, the spectra of special families of hypergraphs are established.
Several new spectral properties of the normalized Laplacian defined for oriented hypergraphs are shown. The eigenvalue $1$ and the case of duplicate vertices are discussed; two Courant nodal domain theorems are established; new quantities that bound the eigenvalues are introduced. In particular, the Cheeger constant is generalized and it is shown that the classical Cheeger bounds can be generalized for some classes of hypergraphs; it is shown that a geometric quantity used to study zonotopes bounds the largest eigenvalue from below, and that the notion of coloring number can be generalized and…
The spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph $G$ is the the maximum modulus of the eigenvalues of the adjacency tensor of $G$. For $k\ge 2$, among connected $k$-uniform hypergraphs with $m\ge 1$ edges, we show that the $k$-uniform loose path with $m$ edges is the unique one with minimum spectral radius, and we also determine the unique ones with second minimum spectral radius when $m\ge 2$.
Here we study the spectral properties of an underlying weighted graph of a non-uniform hypergraph by introducing different connectivity matrices, such as adjacency, Laplacian and normalized Laplacian matrices. We show that different structural properties of a hypergrpah, can be well studied using spectral properties of these matrices. Connectivity of a hypergraph is also investigated by the eigenvalues of these operators. Spectral radii of the same are bounded by the degrees of a hypergraph. The diameter of a hypergraph is also bounded by the eigenvalues of its connectivity matrices. We charac…
We study both $H$ and $E/Z$-eigenvalues of the adjacency tensor of a uniform multi-hypergraph and give conditions for which the largest positive $H$ or $Z$-eigenvalue corresponds to a strictly positive eigenvector. We also investigate when the $E$-spectrum of the adjacency tensor is symmetric.
Let $\mathcal{A}(H)$ and $\mathcal{Q}(H)$ be the adjacency tensor and signless Laplacian tensor of an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$. Denote by $ρ(H)$ and $ρ(\mathcal{Q}(H))$ the spectral radii of $\mathcal{A}(H)$ and $\mathcal{Q}(H)$, respectively. In this paper we present a lower bound on $ρ(H)$ in terms of vertex degrees and we characterize the extremal hypergraphs attaining the bound, which solves a problem posed by Nikiforov [V. Nikiforov, Analytic methods for uniform hypergraphs, Linear Algebra Appl. 457 (2014) 455-535]. Also, we prove a lower bound on $ρ(\mathcal{Q}(H))$ concerning degrees …
Circulant tensors naturally arise from stochastic process and spectral hypergraph theory. The joint moments of stochastic processes are symmetric circulant tensors. The adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian tensors of circulant hypergraphs are also symmetric circulant tensors. The adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian tensors of directed circulant hypergraphs are circulant tensors, but they are not symmetric in general. In this paper, we study spectral properties of circulant tensors and their applications in spectral hypergraph theory and stochastic process. We show that in certai…
We give some graph theoretical formulas for the trace $Tr_k(\mathbb {T})$ of a tensor $\mathbb {T}$ which do not involve the differential operators and auxiliary matrix. As applications of these trace formulas in the study of the spectra of uniform hypergraphs, we give a characterization (in terms of the traces of the adjacency tensors) of the $k$-uniform hypergraphs whose spectra are $k$-symmetric, thus give an answer to a question raised in [3]. We generalize the results in [3, Theorem 4.2] and [5, Proposition 3.1] about the $k$-symmetry of the spectrum of a $k$-uniform hypergraph, and answe…
In this paper, we study some extremal problems of three kinds of spectral radii of $k$-uniform hypergraphs (the adjacency spectral radius, the signless Laplacian spectral radius and the incidence $Q$-spectral radius). We call a connected and acyclic $k$-uniform hypergraph a supertree. We introduce the operation of "moving edges" for hypergraphs, together with the two special cases of this operation: the edge-releasing operation and the total grafting operation. By studying the perturbation of these kinds of spectral radii of hypergraphs under these operations, we prove that for all these three…
