We study the intensity spatial correlation function of optical speckle patterns above a disordered dielectric medium in the multiple scattering regime. The intensity distributions are recorded by scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) with sub-wavelength spatial resolution at variable distances from the surface in a range which spans continuously from the near-field (distance $ \ll λ$) to the far-field regime (distance $\gg λ$). The non-universal behavior at sub-wavelength distances reveals the connection between the near-field speckle pattern and the internal structure of the medium.
A point source in a disordered scattering medium generates a speckle pattern with non-universal features, giving rise to the so-called C_0 correlation. We analyze theoretically the relationship between the C_0 correlation and the statistical fluctuations of the local density of states, based on simple arguments of energy conservation. This derivation leads to a clear physical interpretation of the C_0 correlation. Using exact numerical simulations, we show that C_0 is essentially a correlation resulting from near-field interactions. These interactions are responsible for the non-universality o…
A fundamental challenge in physics is controlling the propagation of waves in disordered media despite strong scattering from inhomogeneities. Spatial light modulators enable one to synthesize (shape) the incident wavefront, optimizing the multipath interference to achieve a specific behavior such as focusing light to a target region. However, the extent of achievable control was not known when the target region is much larger than the wavelength and contains many speckles. Here we show that for targets containing more than $g$ speckles, where $g$ is the dimensionless conductance, the extent o…
We study the tail of the spectrum for non-interacting bosons in a blue-detuned random speckle potential. Using an instanton approach we derive the asymptotic behavior of the density of states in d dimensions. The leading corrections resulting from fluctuations around the saddle point solution are obtained by means of the Gel'fand-Yaglom method generalized to functional determinants with zero modes. We find a good agreement with the results of numerical simulations in one dimension. The effect of weak repulsive interactions in the Lifshitz tail is also discussed.
The propagation of monochromatic light through a scattering medium produces speckle patterns in reflection and transmission, and the apparent randomness of these patterns prevents direct imaging through thick turbid media. Yet, since elastic multiple scattering is fundamentally a linear and deterministic process, information is not lost but distributed among many degrees of freedom that can be resolved and manipulated. Here we demonstrate experimentally that the reflected and transmitted speckle patterns are correlated, even for opaque media with thickness much larger than the transport mean f…
We provide a theoretical explanation of the results on the intensity distributions and correlation functions obtained from a random beam speckle field in nonlinear bulk waveguides reported in the recent publication Y. Bromberg et.al., Nat. Photonics \textbf{4}, 721 (2010). We study both focusing and defocusing case and in the limit of small speckle size (short correlated disordered beam) provide analytical asymptotes for the intensity probability distributions at the output facet. Additionally we provide a simple relation between the speckle sizes at the input and output of a focusing nonlinea…
Bessel beams are non-diffracting light structures, which can be produced with simple tabletop optical elements such as axicon lenses or ring spatial filters and coherent laser beams. One of their main characteristic is that Bessel beams maintain their spatial characteristics after meters of propagation. In this paper we demonstrate a system and method for generating Bessel beams from amorphous speckle patterns, exploiting adaptive optimization by a spatial light modulator. These speckles are generated by light modes transmitted through a scattering curtain and selected by a ring shaped filter.…
We study theoretically the spatial correlations between the intensities measured at the input and output planes of a disordered scattering medium. We show that at large optical thicknesses, a long-range spatial correlation persists and takes negative values. For small optical thicknesses, short-range and long-range correlations coexist, with relative weights that depend on the optical thickness. These results may have direct implications for the control of wave transmission through complex media by wavefront shaping, thus finding applications in sensing, imaging and information transfer.
Speckle is maybe the most fundamental interference effect of light in disordered media, giving rise to fascinating physical phenomena and enabling applications in imaging, spectroscopy or cryptography, to name a few. While speckle formed outside a sample is easily measured and analysed, true bulk speckle, as formed inside random media, is difficult to investigate directly due to the obvious issue of physical access. Furthermore, its proper theoretical description poses enormous challenges. Here we report on the first direct measurements of intensity correlations of light inside a disordered me…
We report sensing of single nanoparticles using disordered metallic nanoisland substrates supporting surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Speckle patterns arising from leakage radiation of elastically scattered SPPs provides a unique fingerprint of the scattering microstructure at the sensor surface. Experimental measurements of the speckle decorrelation are presented and shown to enable detection of sorption of individual gold nanoparticles and polystyrene beads. Our approach is verified through bright-field and fluorescence imaging of particles adhering to the nanoisland substrate.
We study the fluctuations of the light emitted by two identical incoherent point sources in a disordered environment. The intensity-intensity correlation function and the speckle contrast, obtained after proper temporal and configurational averaging, encode the relative distance between the two sources. This suggests the intriguing possibility that intensity measurements at only one point in a speckle pattern produced by two incoherent sources can provide information about the relative distance between the sources, with a precision that is not limited by diffraction. The theory also suggests a…
Laser speckle is generated by the multiple interference of light through a disordered medium. Here we study the premise that the speckle pattern retains information about the polarisation state of the incident field. We analytically verify that a linear relation exists between the Stokes vector of the light and the resulting speckle pattern. As a result, the polarisation state of a beam can be measured from the speckle pattern using a transmission matrix approach. We perform a quantitative analysis of the accuracy of the transmission matrix method to measure randomly time-varying polarisation …
In a disordered medium with Kerr-type nonlinearity, the transmitted speckle pattern was predicted to become unstable, as a result of the positive feedback between the intensity fluctuations and the nonlinear dependence of the local refractive index. We present the first experimental evidence of speckle instability of light transversally scattered in a liquid crystal cell. A two-dimensional controlled disorder is imprinted in the medium through a suitable illumination of a photoconductive wall of the cell, whereas the nonlinear response is obtained through optical reorientation of the liquid cr…
Speckle patterns generated in a disordered medium carry a lot of information despite the apparent complete randomness in the intensity pattern. When the medium possesses $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearity, the speckle is sensitive to the phase of the incident fundamental light, as well as the light generated within. Here, we examine the speckle decorrelation in the fundamental and second-harmonic transmitted light as a function of varying power in the fundamental beam. At low incident powers, the speckle patterns produced by successive pulses exhibit strong correlations, that decrease with increasing powe…
The irradiation of a dilute cloud of cold atoms with a coherent light field produces a random intensity distribution known as laser speckle. Its statistical fluctuations contain information about the mesoscopic scattering processes at work inside the disordered medium. Following up on earlier work by Assaf and Akkermans [Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ \textbf{98}, 083601 (2007)], we analyze how static speckle intensity correlations are affected by an internal Zeeman degeneracy of the scattering atoms. It is proven on general grounds that the speckle correlations cannot exceed the standard Rayleigh law. O…
Photonic metasurfaces are ultrathin electromagnetic wave-molding metamaterials providing the missing link for the integration of nanophotonic chips with nanoelectronic circuits. An extra twist in this field originates from spin-optical metasurfaces providing the photon spin (polarization helicity) as an additional degree of freedom in light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. Here we report on a generic concept to control the photonic transport by disordered (random) metasurfaces with a custom-tailored geometric phase. This approach combines the peculiarity of random patterns to support extr…
Current optical manipulation techniques rely on carefully engineered setups and samples. Although similar conditions are routinely met in research laboratories, it is still a challenge to manipulate microparticles when the environment is not well controlled and known a priori, since optical imperfections and scattering limit the applicability of this technique to real-life situations, such as in biomedical or microfluidic applications. Nonetheless, scattering of coherent light by disordered structures gives rise to speckles, random diffraction patterns with well-defined statistical properties.…
The accurate determination and control of the wavelength of light is fundamental to many fields of science. Speckle patterns resulting from the interference of multiple reflections in disordered media are well-known to scramble the information content of light by complex but linear processes. However, these patterns are, in fact, exceptionally rich in information about the illuminating source. We use a fibre-coupled integrating sphere to generate wavelength-dependent speckle patterns, in combination with algorithms based on the transmission matrix method and principal component analysis, to re…
Optical interferometry has proven extremely powerful to investigate some of the most fundamental laws of physics, using light with very precisely controlled geometry. In the past few decades, various speckle metrology methods have emerged to harness the interferometric properties of strongly disordered light instead, using time-domain analysis of speckle patterns at a maximum rate limited by the frequency of image acquisition. The present work is based on using a centimeter-sized quartz-powder cavity with an arbitrary shape that is engineered with very high Lambertian reflectivity. When filled…
We discuss quantum and classical aspects of two-photon interference in light transmission through disordered media. We show that disorder is the main factor that suppresses the interference, whatever the quantum state of the incident light. Secondarily, the two-photon interference is affected by the quantum nature of light (i.e., the well-defined number of photons in the two-photon entangled and Fock states as compared to the coherent state). And finally, entanglement is a resource that allows to prepare two-photon states with special symmetries with respect to the interchange of the photons a…

The ability to control the light matter interaction and simultaneous tuning of both structural order and disorder in materials, although are important in photonics, but still remain as major challenges. In this paper, we show that optical path length dictates light-matter interaction in the same crystal structure formed by the ordering of magnetic nanoparticle self-assembled columns inside magnetic nanofluid under applied field. When the optical path length (L=80 μm) is shorter than the optical (for wavelength, λ=632.8 nm) coherence length inside the magnetic nanofluid under applied field, a D…
