Pseudo-Newtonian potentials are a tool often used in theoretical astrophysics to capture some key features of a black-hole space-time in a Newtonian framework. As a result, one can use Newtonian numerical codes, and Newtonian formalism in general, in an effective description of important astrophysical processes such as accretion onto black holes.
In this paper we develop a general pseudo-Newtonian formalism which pertains to the motion of particles, light, and fluids in stationary space-times. In return, we are able to assess the applicability of the pseudo-Newtonian scheme. The simplest and most elegant formulas are obtained in space-times without gravitomagnetic effects, such as the Schwarzschild rather than the Kerr space-time; the quantitative errors are smallest for motion with low binding energy. Included is a ready-to-use set of fluid equations in Schwarzschild space-time in Cartesian and radial coordinates.
Pseudo-Newtonian gravitational potential introduced in spherically symmetric black-hole spacetimes with a repulsive cosmological constant is tested for equilibrium toroidal configurations of barotropic perfect fluid orbiting the black holes. Shapes and potential depths are determined for the marginally stable barotropic tori with uniform distribution of specific angular momentum, using both the pseudo-Newtonian and fully relativistic approach. For the adiabatic (isoentropic) perfect fluid, temperature profiles, mass-density and pressure profiles and total masses of pseudo-Newtonian and relativ…
The post-Newtonian Jeans equation for stationary self-gravitating systems is derived from the post-Newtonian Boltzmann equation in spherical coordinates. The Jeans equation is coupled with the three Poisson equations from the post-Newtonian theory. The Poisson equations are functions of the energy-momentum tensor components which are determined from the post-Newtonian Maxwell--Jüttner distribution function. As an application, the effect of a central massive black hole on the velocity dispersion profile of the host galaxy is investigated and the influence of the post-Newtonian corrections are d…
We investigated hydrodynamical post-Newtonian models of selfgravitating stationary black-hole-disk systems. The post-Newtonian scheme presented here and also in our recent paper is a continuation of previous, purely Newtonian studies of selfgravitating hydrodynamical disks rotating according to the Keplerian rotation law. The post-Newtonian relativistic corrections are significant even at the 1PN level. The 1PN correction to the angular velocity can be of the order of 10% of its Newtonian value. It can be expressed as a combination of geometric and hydrodynamical terms. Moreover, in contrast t…
The properties of an axisymmetric, stationary gas cloud surrounding a massive central object are discussed. It is assumed that the gravitational field is dominated by the central object which is modeled by a nonrelativistic rotationally-symmetric potential. Further, we assume that the gas consists of collisionless, identical massive particles that follow bound orbits in this potential. Several models for the one-particle distribution function are considered and the essential formulae that describe the relevant macroscopical observables, such as the particle and energy densities, pressure tenso…
We evaluate general-relativistic effects in motion of stationary accretion disks around a Schwarzschild black hole, assuming the first post-Newtonian (1PN) approximation. There arises an integrability condition, that leads to the emergence of two types of general-relativistic corrections to a Newtonian rotation curve. The well known geometric dragging of frames accelerates rotation but the hitherto unknown dynamic term, that reflects the disk structure, deccelerates rotation. The net result can diminish the Newtonian angular velocity of rotation in a central disk zone but the geometric draggin…
We study the dynamics of the planar circular restricted three-body problem in the context of a pseudo-Newtonian approximation. By using the Fodor-Hoenselaers-Perjés procedure, we perform an expansion in the mass potential of a static massive spherical source up to the first non-Newtonian term, giving place to a gravitational potential that includes first-order general relativistic effects. With this result, we model a system composed by two pseudo-Newtonian primaries describing circular orbits around their common center of mass, and a test particle orbiting the system in the equatorial plane. …
The Johannsen-Psaltis spacetime describes a rotating black hole with parametric deviations from the Kerr metric. By construction this spacetime explicitly violates the no-hair theorems. Rotating black hole solutions in any modified theory of gravity could be written in terms of the Johannsen-Psaltis metric. We examined the accretion of gas onto a black hole described by the static limit of this spacetime. We employed a potential that generalises the Paczynski-Wiita potential to the static Johannsen-Psaltis metric. Our analysis utilised a recent pseudo-Newtonian formulation of the dynamics arou…
In this paper we investigate the structure of the pseudo-Newtonian force and potential about a five dimensional rotating black hole. The conditions for the force character from an attractive to repulsive are considered. It is also found that the force will reach a maximum under certain conditions.
This paper is devoted to investigate the structure of the pseudo-Newtonian force and potential of the stringy black holes. We discuss conditions for the force character from an attractive to repulsive. It is also found that the force will reach a maximum under certain conditions. Also, the ratio of mass and charge is evaluated for the maximum force.
Pseudo-Newtonian Potential has always been a useful tool to discuss the motion of a particle in space-time to avoid the tedious and nearly impossible nonlinear computations coming from the field equations of general relativity. Mukhopadhyay, in 2002, has introduced such a pseudo-Newtonian potential for rotating Kerr black hole which is efficient enough to replicate the scenario of the classical mechanics. But there was no such model to explain the dark energy realm. In 2016 S Ghosh introduced a Lagrangian for such rotating black hole embedded in quintessence. in this article we obtained a pseu…
A pseudo-Newtonian Hill problem based on a potential proposed by Artemova et al. [Astroph. J. 461 (1996) 565] is presented. This potential reproduces some of the general relativistic effects due to the spin angular momentum of the bodies, like the dragging of inertial frames. Poincare maps, Lyapunov exponents and fractal escape techniques are employed to study the stability of bounded and unbounded orbits for different spins of the central body.
In this paper, we study the behavior of the pseudo-Newtonian force and potential about a higher dimensional rotating black hole. We obtain conditions for the force character from an attractive to repulsive. We also find the conditions under which force attains a maximum value. The results of this paper generalizes the already found structure of force and potential about a five dimensional rotating black hole. It is interesting to note that we recover the five dimensional results under a special case.
Pseudo-Newtonian gravitational potential describing the gravitational field of static and spherically symmetric black holes in the universe with a repulsive cosmological constant is introduced. In order to demonstrate the accuracy of the pseudo-Newtonian approach, the related effective potential for test-particle motion is constructed and compared with its general relativistic counterpart given by the Schwarzschild-de Sitter geometry. The results indicate that such an approach could be useful in applications of developed Newtonian theories of accretion discs in astrophysically interesting situ…
The Newtonian as well as the special relativistic dynamics are used to study the stability of orbits of a test particle moving around a black hole plus a dipolar halo. The black hole is modeled by either the usual monopole potential or the Paczynki-Wiita pseudo-Newtonian potential. The full general relativistic similar case is also considered. The Poincare section method and the Lyapunov characteristic exponents show that the orbits for the pseudo-Newtonian potential models are more unstable than the corresponding general relativistic geodesics.
We consider the equatorial circular motion of a test particle of specific charge q/m << 1 in the Kerr-Newman geometry of a rotating charged black hole. We find the particle's conserved energy and conserved projection of the angular momentum on the black hole's axis of rotation as corrections, in leading order of q/m, to the corresponding energy and angular momentum of a neutral particle. We determine the centripetal force acting on the test particle and, consequently, we find a classical pseudo-Newtonian potential with which one can mimic this general relativistic problem.
For stationary, barotropic fluids in Newtonian gravity we give simple criteria on the equation of state and the "law of motion" which guarantee finite or infinite extent of the fluid region (providing a priori estimates for the corresponding stationary Newton-Euler system). Under more restrictive conditions, we can also exclude the presence of "hollow" configurations. Our main result, which does not assume axial symmetry, uses the virial theorem as the key ingredient and generalises a known result in the static case. In the axially symmetric case stronger results are obtained and examples are …
We present a pseudo-Newtonian potential for accretion disk modeling around the rotating black holes. This potential can describe the general relativistic effects on accretion disk. As the inclusion of rotation in a proper way is very important at an inner edge of disk the potential is derived from the Kerr metric. This potential can reproduce all the essential properties of general relativity within 10% error even for rapidly rotating black holes.
We investigate spherically symmetric equilibrium states of the Vlasov-Poisson system, relevant in galactic dynamics. We recast the equations into a regular three-dimensional system of autonomous first order ordinary differential equations on a region with compact closure.Based on a dynamical systems analysis we derive theorems that guarantee that the steady state solutions have finite mass and compact support.
We examine the orbital dynamics of the planar pseudo-Newtonian Copenhagen problem, in the case of a binary system of Schwarzschild-like primaries, such as super-massive black holes. In particular, we investigate how the Jacobi constant (which is directly connected with the energy of the orbits) influences several aspects of the orbital dynamics, such as the final state of the orbits. We also determine how the relativistic effects (i.e., the Schwarzschild radius) affect the character of the orbits, by comparing our results with the classical Newtonian problem. Basin diagrams are deployed for pr…
Two pseudo-Newtonian potentials, which approximate the angular and epicyclic frequencies of the relativistic accretion disk around rotating (and counter rotating) compact objects, are presented. One of them, the Logarithmically Modified Potential, is a better approximation for the frequencies while the other, the Second-order Expanded potential, also reproduces the specific energy for circular orbits in close agreement with the General Relativistic values. These potentials may be included in time dependent hydrodynamical simulations to study the temporal behavior of such accretion disks.
We prescribe a pseudo-Newtonian vector potential for studying accretion disks around Kerr black holes. The potential is useful to study the inner properties of disk not confined to the equatorial plane where general relativistic effect is indispensable. Therefore, we incorporate the essential properties of the metric at the inner radii through the pseudo-Newtonian potential derived from the general Kerr spacetime. The potential, reproducing most of the salient features of the general-relativity, is valid for entire regime of Kerr parameter. It reproduces the last stable circular orbit exactly …
Although the post-Newtonian Lagrangian formalism is widely used in relativistic dynamical and statistical studies of test bodies moving around arbitrary mass distributions, the corresponding general Hamiltonian formalism is still relatively uncommon, being restricted basically to the case of N-body problems. Here, we present a consistent Hamiltonian formalism for the dynamics of test particles in spacetimes with arbitrary energy-momentum distributions in the first post-Newtonian (1PN) approximation. We apply our formalism to orbital motion in stationary axisymmetric spacetimes and obtain the 1…
We develop a numerical hydrodynamics code using a pseudo-Newtonian formulation that uses the weak field approximation for the geometry, and a generalized source term for the Poisson equation that takes into account relativistic effects. The code was designed to treat moderately relativistic systems such as rapidly rotating neutron stars. The hydrodynamic equations are solved using a finite volume method with High Resolution Shock Capturing (HRSC) techniques. We implement several different slope limiters for second order reconstruction schemes and also investigate higher order reconstructions. …
The innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO) of coalescing neutron star-black hole binary are studied taking into account both the tidal and relativistic effects. We adopt the generalized pseudo-Newtonian potential to mimic the general relativistic effects of gravitation. It is found that the separation of the neutron star and the black hole at the ISCO is greater than that obtained by using either the Newtonian potential or the second post-Newtonian equation of motion of point mass. In equal mass cases, it is found that for $\bar{a}/m_1 > 3.5$ with $\bar{a}$ and $m_1$ being the mean radius and…
We investigate the carter like constant for a particle in a non relativistic dipolar field. This special case is a missing link between carter constant in stationary axially symmetric spacetime such as Kerr solution and its possible Newtonian counterpart. We use this system to carry over the definition of angular momentum from Newtonian mechanics to relativistic stationary axially symmetric stationary spacetime.
Recent analytic results concerning stationary, self-gravitating fluids in Newtonian theory are discussed. We give a theorem that forbids infinitely extended fluids, depending on the assumed equation of state and the rotation law. This part extends previous results that have been obtained for static configurations. The second part discusses a Sobolev bound on the mass of the fluid and a rigorous Jeans-type inequality that is valid in the stationary case.
We describe a pseudo-Newtonian potential which, to within 1% error at all angular momenta, reproduces the precession due to general relativity of particles whose specific orbital energy is small compared to c^2 in the Schwarzschild metric. For bound orbits the constraint of low energy is equivalent to requiring the apoapsis of a particle to be large compared to the Schwarzschild radius. Such low energy orbits are ubiquitous close to supermassive black holes in galactic nuclei, but the potential is relevant in any context containing particles on low energy orbits. Like the more complex post-New…
Using the Newtonian approximation, we study rotating compact bosonic objects. The equations which describe stationary states with non-zero angular momentum are constructed and some numerical results are presented as examples. Limits on the applicability of the Newtonian approximation are discussed.
We study the effectiveness of stationary-phase approximated post-Newtonian waveforms currently used by ground-based gravitational-wave detectors to search for the coalescence of binary black holes by comparing them to an accurate waveform obtained from numerical simulation of an equal-mass non-spinning binary black hole inspiral, merger and ringdown. We perform this study for the Initial- and Advanced-LIGO detectors. We find that overlaps between the templates and signal can be improved by integrating the match filter to higher frequencies than used currently. We propose simple analytic freque…
General Relativity's Kerr metric is famous for its many symmetries which are responsible for the separability of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation governing the geodesic motion and of the Teukolsky equation for wave dynamics. We show that there is a unique stationary and axisymmetric Newtonian gravitational potential that has exactly the same dual property of separable point-particle and wave motion equations. This `Kerr metric analogue' of Newtonian gravity is none other than Euler's 18th century problem of two-fixed gravitating centers.
Recent general-relativistic extensions of Newtonian rotation laws for self-gravitating stationary fluids allow one to rederive, in the first post-Newtonian approximation, the well known geometric dragging of frames, and two new weak-field effects within rotating tori. These are the recently discovered anti-dragging and a new effect that measures the deviation from the Keplerian motion and/or the contribution of the fluids selfgravity. They can be applied to the study of the existence of the (post-)Newtonian limits of solutions and in investigations of inequalities relating parameters of rotati…
We study the relativistic accretion flow around a generic stationary axisymmetric space-time and obtain an effective potential ($Φ^{\rm eff}$) that accurately mimics the general relativistic features of Kerr black hole having spin $0\le a_k <1$. Considering the accretion disc confined around the equatorial plane of a rotating black hole and using the relativistic equation of state, we examine the properties of the relativistic accretion flow and compare it with the same obtained form semi-relativistic as well as non-relativistic accretion flows. Towards this, we first investigate the transonic…
We study first the Hamiltonian operator H corresponding to the Fock-Weyl extension of the Dirac equation to gravitation. When searching for stationary solutions to this equation, in a static metric, we show that just one invariant Hermitian product appears natural. In the case of a space-isotropic metric, H is Hermitian for that product. Then we investigate the asymptotic post-Newtonian approximation of the stationary Schroedinger equation associated with H, for a slow particle in a weak-field static metric. We rewrite the expanded equations as one equation for a two-component spinor field. Th…
The properties of a stationary gas cloud surrounding a black hole are discussed, assuming that the gas consists of collisionless, identical massive particles that follow spatially bound geodesic orbits in the Schwarzschild spacetime. Several models for the one-particle distribution function are considered, and the essential formulae that describe the relevant macroscopic observables, like the current density four-vector and the stress-energy-momentum tensor are derived. This is achieved by rewriting these observables as integrals over the constants of motion and by a careful analysis of the ra…
We prove that there exists a class of non-stationary solutions to the Einstein-Euler equations which have a Newtonian limit. The proof of this result is based on a symmetric hyperbolic formulation of the Einstein-Euler equations which contains a singular parameter $\ep = v_T/c$ where $v_T$ is a characteristic velocity scale associated with the fluid and $c$ is the speed of light. The symmetric hyperbolic formulation allows us to derive $\ep$ independent energy estimates on weighted Sobolev spaces. These estimates are the main tool used to analyze the behavior of solutions in the limit $\ep \se…
In Newtonian gravity, a stationary axisymmetric system admits a third, Carter-like constant of motion if its mass multipole moments are related to each other in exactly the same manner as for the Kerr black-hole spacetime. The Newtonian source with this property consists of two point masses at rest a fixed distance apart. The integrability of motion about this source was first studied in the 1760s by Euler. We show that the general relativistic analogue of the Euler problem, the Bach-Weyl solution, does not admit a Carter-like constant of motion, first, by showing that it does not possess a no…
We derive the metric on the parameter space of 3.5 post-Newtonian (3.5PN) stationary phase compact binary inspiral waveforms for a single detector, neglecting spin, eccentricity, and finite-body effects. We demonstrate that this leads to better template placement than the current practice of using the 2PN metric to place 3.5PN templates: The recovered event rate is improved by about 10% at a cost of nearly doubling the number of templates. The cross-correlations between mass parameters are also more accurate, which will result in better coincidence tests.
The most precise test of the post-Newtonian gamma parameter in the solar system has been achieved in measurement of the frequency shift of radio waves to and from the Cassini spacecraft as they passed near the Sun. The test relies upon the JPL model of radiowave propagation that includes, but does not explicitly parametrize, the impact of the non-stationary component of the gravitational field of the Sun, generated by its barycentric orbital motion, on the Shapiro delay. This non-stationary gravitational field of the Sun is associated with the Lorentz transformation of the metric tensor and th…
Exact stationary axially symmetric solutions of the 4D Einstein equations with corotating pressureless perfect fluid sources are studied. A particular solution with approximately flat rotation curve is discussed in some detail. We find that simple Newtonian arguments overestimate the amount of matter needed to explain these curves by more than 30%. The crucial insight gained by this model is that the Newtonian approximation breaks down globally, even though it is valid locally everywhere. No conflict with solar system tests arises.
The dynamical system studied in previous papers of this series, namely a bound time-like geodesic motion in the exact static and axially symmetric space-time of an (originally) Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a thin disc or ring, is considered to test whether the often employed "pseudo-Newtonian" approach (resorting to Newtonian dynamics in gravitational potentials modified to mimic the black-hole field) can reproduce phase-space properties observed in the relativistic treatment. By plotting Poincaré surfaces of section and using two recurrence methods for similar situations as in the r…
We demonstrate that a spherical accretion onto astrophysical black holes, under the influence of Newtonian or various post-Newtonian pseudo-Schwarzschild gravitational potentials, may constitute a concrete example of classical analogue gravity naturally found in the Universe. We analytically calculate the corresponding analogue Hawking temperature as a function of the minimum number of physical parameters governing the accretion flow. We study both the polytropic and the isothermal accretion. We show that unlike in a general relativistic spherical accretion, analogue white hole solutions can n…
Circularly orbiting black hole-gaseous star close binary systems are examined by using numerically exact stationary configurations in the framework of Newtonian gravity. We have chosen a polytropic star for the fluid component of the binary system and considered two ideal situations: 1) a synchronously rotating star and 2) an irrotationally rotating star. They correspond to a rotating star under the influence of viscosity and to that in the inviscid limit, respectively. By analyzing the stationary sequences of binary systems with small separations, we can discuss the final stages of black hole…
The pseudo-Newtonian potential of Paczynski and Wiita for particles orbiting a Schwarzschild black hole is generalized to arbitrary static and spherically symmetric spacetimes, including black hole solutions of alternative theories of gravity. In addition to being more general, our prescription differs substantially from a previous one in the literature, showing that even the association of a pseudo-Newtonian potential with a simple black hole metric is not unique.
We propose a new numerical method to calculate irrotational binary systems composed of compressible gaseous stars in Newtonian gravity. Assuming irrotationality, i.e. vanishing of the vorticity vector everywhere in the star in the inertial frame, we can introduce the velocity potential for the flow field. Using this velocity potential we can derive a set of basic equations for stationary states which consist of (i) the generalized Bernoulli equation, (ii) the Poisson equation for the Newtonian gravitational potential and (iii) the equation for the velocity potential with the Neumann type bound…
An approximation to General Relativity is presented that agrees with the Einstein field equations up to and including the fourth post-Newtonian (PN) order. This approximation is formulated in a fully constrained scheme: all involved equations are explicitly elliptic except the wave equation that describes the two independent degrees of freedom of the gravitational field. The formalism covers naturally the conformal-flat-condition (CFC) approach by Isenberg, Wilson, and Mathews and the improved second PN-order exact approach CFC+. For stationary configurations, like Kerr black holes, agreement …
We formulate new general-relativistic extensions of Newtonian rotation laws for self-gravitating stationary fluids. They have been used to re-derive, in the first post-Newtonian approximation, the well known geometric dragging of frames. We derive two other general-relativistic weak-field effects within rotating tori: the recently discovered dynamic anti-dragging and a new effect that measures the deviation from the Keplerian motion and/or the contribution of the fluids selfgravity. One can use the rotation laws to study the uniqueness and the convergence of the post-Newtonian approximations, …
We obtain rotation laws for axially symmetric, selfgravitating and stationary fluids around spinning black holes. They reduce --- in the Newtonian limit --- to monomial rotation curves. For spinless black hole, one obtains in the first post-Newtonian (1PN) approximation the hitherto known results, that can be interpreted as the geometric dragging and material antidragging. We find new 1PN effects, that are due to spins of black holes.
In this paper we study the kinetic theory of many-particle astrophysical systems imposing axial symmetry and extending our previous analysis in Phys. Rev. D 83, 123007 (2011). Starting from a Newtonian model describing a collisionless self-gravitating gas, we develop a framework to include systematically the first general relativistic corrections to the matter distribution and gravitational potentials for general stationary systems. Then, we use our method to obtain particular solutions for the case of the Morgan & Morgan disks. The models obtained are fully analytical and correspond to the po…
I analyse the relativistic accretion phenomena around rotating black holes and neutron stars in pseudo-Newtonian approach and show both the kinds of disk can be treated in an unified manner. For this purpose, number of pseudo-Newtonian potentials are in literature, applicable to describe the relativistic properties of accretion disk. While, Kerr metric is used to describe the pseudo-Newtonian potential for accretion disk around black hole, the Hartle-Thorne metric is considered to describe disk around neutron star. Two other potentials were proposed to describe the temporal effects of the accr…
We propose a method of determining solutions to the constraint equations of General Relativity approximately describing binary black holes in quasi-stationary circular orbits. Black holes with arbitrary linear momenta are constructed in the manner suggested by Brandt and Brugmann. The quasi-stationary circular orbits are determined by local minima in the ADM mass in a manner similar to Baumgarte and Cook; however, rather than fixing the area of the apparent horizon, we fix the value of the bare masses of the holes. We numerically generate an evolutionary sequence of quasi-stationary circular o…
