The summation of logarithmic contributions to perturbative radiative corrections in physical processes through use of the renormalization group equation has proved to be a useful way of enhancing the information one can obtain from explicit calculation. However, it has proved difficult to perform this summation when massive fields are present. In this note we point out that if the masses involved are quite large, the decoupling theorem of Symanzik and of Appelquist and Carazzone can be used to make the summation of logarithms possible.
We consider logarithmic contributions to the free energy, instanton effective action and Laplace sum rules in QCD that are a consequence of radiative corrections. Upon summing these contributions by using the renormalization group, all dependence on the renormalization scale parameter $μ$ cancels. The renormalization scheme dependence in these processes is examined, and a renormalization scheme is found in which the effect of higher order radiative corrections is absorbed by the behaviour of the running coupling.
We extend existing work on reparametrization invariance (RPI) of the heavy-quark expansion. We discuss the total rates of inclusive processes and obtain results which have a manifest RPI and can be expressed through matrix elements of operators and states defined in full QCD. This approach leads to a partial re-summation of higher-order terms in the heavy-quark expansion and has the advantage that the number of independent parameters is reduced.
The solution to the Schwinger-Dyson equation that describes the summation over Pomeron loop diagrams is derived. The solution is a closed expression which splits into two parts. The first leads directly to the renormalization of the BFKL Pomeron, and the second contribution is equivalent to non interacting Pomerons with renormalized vertices. Thus a closed expression is derived for the sum over Pomeron loop diagrams in the perturbative QCD approach, which preserves unitarity.
We employ renormalization group (RG) summation techniques to obtain portions of Laplace QCD sum rules for scalar gluon currents beyond the order to which they have been explicitly calculated. The first two of these sum rules are considered in some detail, and it is shown that they have significantly less dependence on the renormalization scale parameter $μ^2$ once the RG summation is used to extend the perturbative results. Using the sum rules, we then compute the bound on the scalar glueball mass and demonstrate that the 3 and 4-Loop perturbative results form lower and upper bounds to their R…
Using an approach developed in the context of zero-temperature QCD to systematically sum higher order effects whose form is fixed by the renormalization group equation, we sum to all orders the leading log (LL) and next-to-leading log (NLL) contributions to the thermodynamic free energy in hot QCD. While the result varies considerably less with changes in the renormalization scale than does the purely perturbative result, a novel ambiguity arises which reflects the strong scheme dependence of thermal perturbation theory.
Invariance of the effective action under changes of the renormalization scale $μ$ leads to relations between those (presumably calculated) terms independent of $μ$ at a given order of perturbation theory and those higher order terms dependent on logarithms of $μ$. This relationship leads to differential equations for a sequence of functions, the solutions of which give closed form expressions for the sum of all leading logs, next to leading logs and subsequent subleading logarithmic contributions to the effective action. The renormalization group is thus shown to provide information about a mo…
We consider the lightcone sum-rule description of the pion-photon transition form factor, based on dispersion relations, in combination with the renormalization group of QCD, in terms of the formal solution of the Efremov-Radyushkin-Brodsky-Lepage evolution equation, and show that the emerging scheme amounts to a certain version of Fractional Analytic Perturbation Theory (FAPT). In order to ensure the correct asymptotic behavior of the considered physical quantity, this modified FAPT version has to be supplemented by process-specific boundary conditions---in contrast to the standard one. Howev…
We study the renormalization-scheme (RS) dependence of Pade Approximants (PA's), and compare them with the Principle of Minimal Sensitivity (PMS) and the Effective Charge (ECH) approaches. Although the formulae provided by the PA, PMS and ECH predictions for higher-order terms in a QCD perturbation expansion differ in general, their predictions can be very close numerically for a wide range of renormalization schemes. Using the Bjorken sum rule as a test case, we find that Pade Summation (PS) reduces drastically the RS dependence of the Bjorken effective charge. We use these results to estimat…
We consider the lightcone sum-rule (LCSR) description of the pion-photon transition form factor in combination with the renormalization group of QCD. The emerging scheme represents a certain version of Fractional Analytic Perturbation Theory and significantly extends the applicability domain of perturbation theory towards lower momenta $Q^2\lesssim 1$ GeV$^2$. We show that the predictions calculated herewith agree very well with the released preliminary data of the BESIII experiment, which have very small errors just in this region, while the agreement with other data at higher $Q^2$ is compat…
Based on the renormalization group summation method of McKeon ${\it et\; al.}$, it is shown that the renormalization group equation, while related to the radiatively mass scale $μ$, would perform a summation over QCD perturbative terms. Employing the full QCD $β$-function within this summation, all logarithmic corrections can be presented as log-independent contributions. In another step of this approach, the renormalization scheme dependence of QCD observables, characterized by Stevenson, is required to be examined. In this regard, two choices of renormalization scheme would be exposed. In on…
We study two versions of lightcone sum rules to calculate the $γ^*γ\rightarrowπ^0$ transition form factor (TFF) within QCD. While the standard version is based on fixed-order perturbation theory by means of a power-series expansion in the strong coupling, the new method incorporates radiative corrections by renormalization-group summation and generates an expansion within a generalized fractional analytic perturbation theory involving only analytic couplings. Using this scheme, we determine the relative nonperturbative parameters and the first two Gegenbauer coefficients of the pion distributi…
Using renormalization-group methods, we derive differential equations for the all-orders summation of logarithmic corrections to the QCD series for R(s) = sigma(e^+ e^- --> hadrons)/sigma(e^+ e^- --> mu^+ mu^-), as obtained from the imaginary part of the purely-perturbative vector-current correlation function. We present explicit solutions for the summation of leading and up to three subsequent subleading orders of logarithms. The summations accessible from the four-loop vector-correlator not only lead to a substantial reduction in sensitivity to the renormalization scale, but necessarily impo…
For any perturbative series that is known to $k$-subleading orders of perturbation theory, we utilise the process-appropriate renormalization-group (RG) equation in order to obtain all-orders summation of series terms proportional to $α^n \log^{n-k}(μ^2)$ with $k = {0,1,2,3}$, corresponding to the summation to all orders of the leading and subsequent-three-subleading logarithmic contributions to the full perturbative series. These methods are applied to the perturbative series for semileptonic $b$-decays in both MS-bar and pole-mass schemes, and they result in RG-summed series for the decay ra…
We examine the large-order behaviour of a recently proposed renormalization-group-improved expansion of the Adler function in perturbative QCD, which sums in an analytically closed form the leading logarithms accessible from renormalization-group invariance. The expansion is first written as aneffective series in powers of the one-loop coupling, and its leading singularities in the Borel plane are shown to be identical to those of the standard "contour-improved" expansion. Applying the technique of conformal mappings for the analytic continuation in the Borel plane, we define a class of improv…
The Borel summation technique of infrared renormalons is applied to the lattice determination of heavy quark mass. With Borel summation a physical heavy quark pole mass and binding energy of a heavy-light meson can be defined in a rigorous and calculable manner. A notable feature of the Borel summation, compared to the usual perturbative cancellation of IR renormalons, is an automatic scale separation. The two approaches of handling renormalon divergence are compared in the B-meson as well as in an (imaginary) heavy-light meson with a mass much larger than the inverse of the lattice spacing.
The problem of two coupled scalar fields, one with mass much lighter than the other is analysed by means of Wilson's renormalization group approach. Coupled equations for the potential and the wave function renormalization are obtained by means of the gradient expansion. The Appelquist-Carazzone theorem is checked at energies comparable with the light mass; the physics of the light field is also studied at energies comparable and greater than the heavy mass.
We show that using renormalization-group summation to generate the QCD radiative corrections to the $π-γ$ transition form factor, calculated with lightcone sum rules (LCSR), renders the strong coupling free of Landau singularities while preserving the QCD form-factor asymptotics. This enables a reliable applicability of the LCSR method to momenta well below 1 GeV$^2$. This way, one can use the new preliminary BESIII data with unprecedented accuracy below 1.5 GeV$^2$ to fine tune the prefactor of the twist-six contribution. Using a combined fit to all available data below 3.1 GeV$^2$, we are ab…
We perform a calculation of the full momentum dependence of the gluon and ghost propagators in pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory by integrating Wilson's exact renormalization group equations with respect to an infrared cutoff k. The heavy quark potential in the quenched approximation can be expressed in terms of these propagators. Our results strongly indicate a 1/p^4 behaviour of the heavy quark potential for $p^2 \to 0$. We show in general, that effective actions which satisfy Schwinger-Dyson equations, correspond to (quasi-) fixed points of Wilson's exact renormalization group equations.
We demonstrate that in the mass independent renormalization scheme. the renormalization group equations associated with the unphysical parameters that characterize the renormalization scheme and the mass scale leads to summation that results in a cancellation between the implicit and explicit dependence on these parameters. The resulting perturbative expansion is consequently independent of these arbitrary parameters. We illustrate this by considering R, the cross section for e+e- -> hadrons.
Using renormalization-group methods, differential equations can be obtained for the all-orders summation of leading and subsequent non-leading logarithmic corrections to QCD perturbative series for a number of processes and correlation functions. For a QCD perturbative series known to four orders, such as the e+ e- annihilation cross-section, explicit solutions to these equations are obtained for the summation to all orders in alpha_s of the leading set and the subsequent two non-leading sets of logarithms. Such summations are shown for a number of processes to lead to a substantial reduction …
In the absence of a tree-level scalar-field mass, renormalization-group (RG) methods permit the explicit summation of leading-logarithm contributions to all orders of the perturbative series for the effective-potential functions utilized in radiative symmetry breaking. For scalar-field electrodynamics, such a summation of leading logarithm contributions leads to upper bounds on the magnitudes of both gauge and scalar-field coupling constants, and suggests the possibility of an additional phase of spontaneous symmetry breaking characterized by a scalar-field mass comparable to that of the theor…
In contrast to the conventional treatment of gauge theories, in the background-field method the Ward identities for connected Green functions are not violated by Dyson summation of self-energies in finite orders of perturbation theory. Thus, Dyson summation does not spoil gauge cancelations at high energies which are ruled by the Goldstone-boson equivalence theorem. Moreover, in the background-field method the precise formulation of the equivalence theorem in higher orders (including questions of renormalization) is simplified rendering actual calculations easier. Finally, the equivalence theo…
We calculate next-to-leading QCD corrections to the decay $H^+ \to u\bar d$ for generic up and down quarks in the final state. A recently developed algorithm for evaluation of massive two-loop Feynman diagrams is employed to calculate renormalization constants of the charged Higgs boson. The origin and summation of large logarithmic corrections to the decay rate of the top quark into a lighter charged Higgs boson is also explained.
The five-loop effective potential and the associated summation of subleading logarithms for O(4) globally-symmetric massless $λϕ^4$ field theory in the Coleman-Weinberg renormalization scheme $\frac{d^4V}{dϕ^4}|_{ϕ= μ} = λ$ (where $μ$ is the renormalization scale) is calculated via renormalization-group methods. An important aspect of this analysis is conversion of the known five-loop renormalization-group functions in the minimal-subtraction (MS) scheme to the Coleman-Weinberg scheme.
The renormalization of local dimension-4 operators containing a heavy and a light quark field at scales below the heavy-quark mass is discussed, using the formalism of the heavy-quark effective theory. The anomalous dimensions of these operators and their mixing are calculated to two-loop order. Some phenomenological applications are briefly discussed.
Two loop renormalization group equations for dimensionless as well as dimensionful parameters are obtained for the low energy theories that result from decoupling heavy scalar particles in Split SUSY and Effective SUSY scenarios, assuming that only a single Higgs field survives at low energy. For the Effective SUSY case two scenarios are considered: first, when the only light third generation scalars are the partners of the left-handed quark doublet and the right-handed top quark --which yields the minimal matter content compatible with naturalness-- and second, when all the scalars of the thi…
We extend the methods of Yennie, Frautschi and Suura to QCD for the summation of soft gluon effects in which infrared singularities are cancelled to all orders in $α_s$. An explicit formula for the respective \rngp improved exponentiated cross section is obtained for $q+\bbar{q'}\to q+\bbar{q'}+ n(G)$ at SSC energies. Possible applications are discussed.
We present exact results, at next-to-leading order in renormalization-group improved perturbation theory, for the Wilson coefficients appearing at order 1/m_Q in the heavy-quark expansion of heavy-light current operators. To this end, we complete the calculation of the corresponding two-loop anomalous dimension matrix. Our results are important for determinations of |V_{ub}| using exclusive and inclusive semileptonic B decays. They are also relevant to computations of the decay constant f_B based on a heavy-quark expansion.
The construction of heavy quark effective field theory (HqEFT) is extended to arbitrary order in both expansion parameters $α_s$ and $1/m_q$. Matching conditions are discussed for the general case, and it is verified that this approach correctly reproduces the infrared behaviour of full QCD. Choosing a renormalization scheme in the full theory fixes the renormalization scheme in the effective theory except for the scale of the heavy quark field. Explicit formulae are given for the effective Lagrangian, and one--loop matching renormalization constants are computed for the operators of order $1/…
We establish exact relations between relativistic form factors and amplitudes for single-baryon processes and the corresponding quantities calculated in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. A crucial ingredient for the proper matching is the first complete treatment of baryon wave function renormalization in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory.
We discuss the renormalization of local, scalar and pseudoscalar dimension-5 operators containing a heavy and a light quark field at scales below the heavy-quark mass, using the formalism of the heavy-quark effective theory (HQET). We calculate the anomalous dimensions of these operators and their mixing to one-loop order. We also perform the one-loop matching of gluon and photon penguin operators onto operators of the HQET. We discuss applications of our results to the mixing of gluon and photon penguin operators at low renormalization scales, and to the calculation of $1/m_Q^2$ corrections t…
The low energy effective potential for the model with a light scalar and a heavy scalar is derived. We perform the path integration for both heavy and light scalars and derive the low energy effective potential in terms of only the light scalar. The effective potential is independent of the renormalization scale approximately. By setting the renormalization scale equal to the mass of the heavy scalar, one finds the corrections with the logarithm of the ratio of the two scalar masses. The large logarithm is summed with the renormalization group (RG) and the RG improved effective potential is de…
Once heavy-quark corrections are take into account neutrino-proton elastic scattering provides a complementary probe of polarized strangeness in the nucleon to measurements from inclusive and semi-inclusive polarized deep inelastic scattering. We review the different types of experiment and a recent NLO calculation of heavy-quark contributions to the weak neutral-current axial-charge (measureable in neutrino-proton elastic scattering) performed using Witten's heavy-quark renormalization group method.
We reconsider the question of wave function renormalization in heavy fermion effective field theories. In particular, we work out a simple and efficient scheme to define the wave function renormalization with respect to the lowest order heavy fermion propagator. The method presented is free of a set of ambiguities which arise in heavy fermion effective field theories. In this context, we discuss the approaches used in the literature so far. We also calculate the fourth order pion mass contribution to the nucleon mass shift and discuss the tree and loop contributions to the electric Sachs form …
The one-loop radiative corrections to the Higgs boson potential in the MSSM, originating from the top quark and squark loops, are summed in the leading log approximation using the renormalization group. The RG improved effective potential is minimized and the corrections to the CP-odd and CP-even Higgs boson masses are calculated. The resulting masses exhibit smoother top mass dependence than those calculated without RG summation. We have also found that for preferable values of the top mass the light Higgs mass does not exceed 100 GeV.
In the absence of a tree-level scalar-field mass, renormalization-group methods permit the explicit summation of leading-logarithm contributions to all orders of the perturbative series within the effective potential for $SU(2)\times U(1)$ electroweak symmetry. This improvement of the effective potential function is seen to reduce residual dependence on the renormalization mass scale. The all-orders summation of leading logarithm terms involving the dominant three couplings contributing to radiative corrections is suggestive of a potential characterized by a plausible Higgs boson mass of 216 G…
The asymptotic high momentum behaviour of quantum field theories with cubic interactions is investigated using renormalization group techniques in the asymmetric limit x << 1. Particular emphasis is paid to theories with interactions involving more than one field where it is found that a matrix renormalization is necessary. Asymptotic scaling forms, in agreement with Regge theory, are derived for the elastic two-particle scattering amplitude and verified in one-loop renormalization group improved perturbation theory, corresponding to the summation of leading logs to all orders. We give explici…
The renormalization group procedure for effective particles (RGPEP), developed as a nonperturbative tool for constructing bound states in quantum field theories, is applied to QCD. The approach stems from the similarity renormalization group and introduces the concept of effective particles. It has been shown that the RGPEP passes the test of exhibiting asymptotic freedom. We present the running of the Hamiltonian coupling with the renormalization-group scale and summarize the basic elements needed in the formulation of the bound-state problem.
We complete the leading-log renormalization group scaling of the NRQCD Lagrangian at $O(1/m^2)$. The next-to-next-to-leading-log renormalization group scaling of the potential NRQCD Lagrangian (as far as the singlet is concerned) is also obtained in the situation $mα_s \gg Λ_{QCD}$. As a by-product, we obtain the heavy quarkonium spectrum with the same accuracy in the situation $mα_s^2 \simg Λ_{QCD}$. When $Λ_{QCD} \ll mα_s^2$, this is equivalent to obtain the whole set of $O(mα_s^{(n+4)} \ln^n α_s)$ terms in the heavy quarkonium spectrum. The implications of our results in the non-perturbativ…
We work in theories with both light and heavy particles. A method to obtain an effective low energy action with respect to the light particle is presented. Thanks to Wilsonian renormalization, we obtain effective actions with finite number of local operators describing possible non-decoupling effects of heavy particles. The validity of the method is first checked by explicit computation of a specific observable, the $ρ$ - parameter, in the framework of effective theory. Then we discuss a procedure to obtain the full effective action with respect to light particles in a typical example of the s…
We study the renormalization of operators of the type ${\bar h_{v'}} ΓG^{μν} h_v$ in the heavy-quark effective theory (HQET). We construct the combinations of such operators that are renormalized multiplicatively, and calculate their velocity-dependent anomalous dimensions at the one-loop order. We then show that the virial theorem of the HQET is not renormalized, and that in the limit of equal velocities the anomalous dimension of the chromo-electric operator vanishes to all orders in perturbation theory. This implies an exact relation between renormalization constants, which may help in a fu…
Using rather general consideration I argue that the numerical impact of the existing next-to-leading logarithmic summations of terms $\log{m_b/m_c}$ for perturbative factors $η_A$, $η_V$ in the exclusive zero recoil semileptonic transitions is irrelevant, and adopting corresponding corrections beyond the exact one loop result for both estimating the values of these formfactors and their theoretical uncertainty, is misleading. The central theoretical value if taken literally is then $η_A\simeq 0.97$.
Hattori-Itakura have recently derived the full Landau-level summation form for the photon vacuum polarization tensor in constant external magnetic fields at the one-loop level. The Landau-level summation form is essential when the photon momentum exceeds the threshold of the pair creation of charged particles in a magnetic field stronger than the squared mass of the charged particle. The tensor has three different form factors depending on the tensor direction with respect to the external magnetic field. The renormalization is nontrivial because these form factors are expressed in terms of dou…
We discuss the quantum action principles and equations of motion for Heavy Quark Effective Field Theory. We prove the so-called equivalence theorem for HQEFT which states that the physical predictions of HQEFT are independent from the choice of interpolating fields. En passant we point out that HQEFT is in fact more subtle than the quantum mechanical Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation.
The effective theory describing infinite mass particles with a given velocity, has a great interest in heavy flavor physics. It has the unpleasant characteristic that the energy spectrum is unbounded from below; this fact is the source of the problems in the formulation of the euclidean theory. In this paper we present an analysis of the euclidean effective theory, that is rather complete and has positive conclusions. A proof of the consistency of the euclidean theory is presented and a technique for the evaluation of the amplitudes in perturbation theory is described. We compute also the one-…
The complete renormalization of the weak Lagrangian to chiral order q^2 in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory is performed using heat kernel techniques. The results are compared with divergences appearing in the calculation of Feynman graphs for the nonleptonic hyperon decay Lambda -> p pi^- and an estimate for the size of the counterterm contributions to the s-wave amplitudes in nonleptonic hyperon decays is given.
The complete renormalization of the generating functional for Green functions of quark currents between one--baryon states in three flavor heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory is performed to order q^3. As an example, we study the kaon loop induced divergences in neutral pion photoproduction off protons.
The top quark cross section close to threshold in $e^+e^-$ annihilation is computed including the summation of logarithms of the velocity at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic order in QCD. The remaining theoretical uncertainty in the normalization of the total cross section is at the few percent level, an order of magnitude smaller than in previous next-to-next-to-leading order calculations. This uncertainty is smaller than the effects of a light standard model Higgs boson.
In the framework of potential NRQCD, we obtain the next-to-leading-log renormalization-group running of the matching coefficients for the heavy quarkonium production currents near threshold. This allows to obtain S-wave heavy-quarkonium production/annihilation observables with next-to-leading-log accuracy within perturbative QCD. In particular, we give expressions for the decays of heavy quarkonium to e^+e^- and to two photons. We also compute the O(mα^8\ln^3α) corrections to the Hydrogen spectrum.
The 1/k contribution to the heavy quark potential is first generated at one loop order in QCD. We compute the two loop anomalous dimension for this potential, and find that the renormalization group running is significant. The next-to-leading-log coefficient for the heavy quark production current near threshold is determined. The velocity renormalization group result includes the alpha_s^3 ln^2(alpha_s) ``non-renormalization group logarithms'' of Kniehl and Penin.
Using Wilson-Polchinski renormalization group equations, we give a simple new proof of decoupling in a $ϕ^4$-type scalar field theory involving two real scalar fields (one is heavy with mass $M$ and the other light). Then, to all orders in perturbation theory, it is shown that effects of virtual heavy particles up to the order $1/M^{2N_0}$ can be systematically incorporated into light-particle theory via effective local vertices of canonical dimension at most $4+2N_0$. The couplings for vertices of dimension $4+2N$ are of order $1/M^{2N}$ and are systematically calculable. All this is achieved…
We discuss the Sudakov form factor in the framework of the soft-collinear effective theory. The running of the short distance coefficient function from high to low scale gives the summation of Sudakov logarithms to all orders. Our discussions concentrate on the factorization and derivation of the renormalization group equation from the effective theory point of view. The intuitive interpretation of the renormalization group method is discussed. We compared our method with other resummation approaches in the literatures.
We apply Pade summation to the β(λ) function for the quartic Higgs coupling λin the standard electroweak model. We use the βfunction calculated to five loops in the minimal subtraction scheme to demonstrate the improvement resulting from the summation, and then apply the method to the more physical on-mass-shell renormalization scheme where βis known to three loops. We conclude that the OMS βfunction and the running coupling λ(μ) are reliably known over the range of energies and Higgs-boson masses of current interest.
We study the properties of heavy fermions in the vector-like representation of the electro-weak gauge group $SU(2)_W\times U(1)_Y$ with Yukawa couplings to the standard model (SM) Higgs boson. Using the renormalization group analysis, we discuss their effects on the vacuum stability and the triviality bound on the Higgs self-coupling, within the context of the standard model (i.e., the Higgs particle is elementary). Contrary to the low energy case where the decoupling theorem dictates their behavior, the inclusion of heavy fermions drastically change the SM structure at high scale. We also dis…
QCD contributions to the $b \to u \ell^- \barν_\ell$ decay rate, which are known to two-loop order in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme, exhibit sufficient dependence on the renormalization mass $μ$ to compromise phenomenological predictions for inclusive semileptonic $B \to X_u$ processes. Such scale dependence is ameliorated by the renormalization-group (RG) extraction and summation of all leading and RG-accessible subleading logarithms occurring subsequent to two-loop order in the perturbative series. This optimal RG-improvement of the known portion of the perturbative series virtually eliminates $μ$-d…
Mass- and wave-function renormalization is calculated to order $p^4$ in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. Two different schemes used in the literature are considered. Several technical issues like field redefinitions, non-transformation of sources as well as subtleties related to the definition of the baryon propagator are discussed. The nucleon axial-vector coupling constant $g_A$ is calculated to order $p^4$ as an illustrative example.
