Sparse representation-based classifiers have shown outstanding accuracy and robustness in image classification tasks even with the presence of intense noise and occlusion. However, it has been discovered that the performance degrades significantly either when test image is not aligned with the dictionary atoms or the dictionary atoms themselves are not aligned with each other, in which cases the sparse linear representation assumption fails. In this paper, having both training and test images misaligned, we introduce a novel sparse coding framework that is able to efficiently adapt the dictionary atoms to the test image via large displacement optical flow. In the proposed algorithm, every dictionary atom is automatically aligned with the input image and the sparse code is then recovered using the adapted dictionary atoms. A corresponding supervised dictionary learning algorithm is also developed for the proposed framework. Experimental results on digit datasets recognition verify the efficacy and robustness of the proposed algorithm.

An image super-resolution method from multiple observation of low-resolution images is proposed. The method is based on sub-pixel accuracy block matching for estimating relative displacements of observed images, and sparse signal representation for estimating the corresponding high-resolution image. Relative displacements of small patches of observed low-resolution images are accurately estimated by a computationally efficient block matching method. Since the estimated displacements are also regarded as a warping component of image degradation process, the matching results are directly utilize…
An efficient iterative Earth Mover's Distance (iEMD) algorithm for visual tracking is proposed in this paper. The Earth Mover's Distance (EMD) is used as the similarity measure to search for the optimal template candidates in feature-spatial space in a video sequence. The computation of the EMD is formulated as the transportation problem from linear programming. The efficiency of the EMD optimization problem limits its use for visual tracking. To alleviate this problem, a transportation-simplex method is used for EMD optimization and a monotonically convergent iterative optimization algorithm …

The Lucas & Kanade (LK) algorithm is the method of choice for efficient dense image and object alignment. The approach is efficient as it attempts to model the connection between appearance and geometric displacement through a linear relationship that assumes independence across pixel coordinates. A drawback of the approach, however, is its generative nature. Specifically, its performance is tightly coupled with how well the linear model can synthesize appearance from geometric displacement, even though the alignment task itself is associated with the inverse problem. In this paper, we present…

We introduce a supervised-learning framework for non-rigid point set alignment of a new kind - Displacements on Voxels Networks (DispVoxNets) - which abstracts away from the point set representation and regresses 3D displacement fields on regularly sampled proxy 3D voxel grids. Thanks to recently released collections of deformable objects with known intra-state correspondences, DispVoxNets learn a deformation model and further priors (e.g., weak point topology preservation) for different object categories such as cloths, human bodies and faces. DispVoxNets cope with large deformations, noise a…

Multimodal image alignment is the process of finding spatial correspondences between images formed by different imaging techniques or under different conditions, to facilitate heterogeneous data fusion and correlative analysis. The information-theoretic concept of mutual information (MI) is widely used as a similarity measure to guide multimodal alignment processes, where most works have focused on local maximization of MI that typically works well only for small displacements; this points to a need for global maximization of MI, which has previously been computationally infeasible due to the …

Nonlinear image registration continues to be a fundamentally important tool in medical image analysis. Diagnostic tasks, image-guided surgery and radiotherapy as well as motion analysis all rely heavily on accurate intra-patient alignment. Furthermore, inter-patient registration enables atlas-based segmentation or landmark localisation and shape analysis. When labelled scans are scarce and anatomical differences large, conventional registration has often remained superior to deep learning methods that have so far mainly dealt with relatively small or low-complexity deformations. We address thi…

We consider the problem of compressing an information source when a correlated one is available as side information only at the decoder side, which is a special case of the distributed source coding problem in information theory. In particular, we consider a pair of stereo images, which have overlapping fields of view, and are captured by a synchronized and calibrated pair of cameras as correlated image sources. In previously proposed methods, the encoder transforms the input image to a latent representation using a deep neural network, and compresses the quantized latent representation lossle…

We consider a family of structural descriptors for visual data, namely covariance descriptors (CovDs) that lie on a non-linear symmetric positive definite (SPD) manifold, a special type of Riemannian manifolds. We propose an improved version of CovDs for image set coding by extending the traditional CovDs from Euclidean space to the SPD manifold. Specifically, the manifold of SPD matrices is a complete inner product space with the operations of logarithmic multiplication and scalar logarithmic multiplication defined in the Log-Euclidean framework. In this framework, we characterise covariance …

We recently proposed the STiDi-BP algorithm, which avoids backward recursive gradient computation, for training multi-layer spiking neural networks (SNNs) with single-spike-based temporal coding. The algorithm employs a linear approximation to compute the derivative of the spike latency with respect to the membrane potential and it uses spiking neurons with piecewise linear postsynaptic potential to reduce the computational cost and the complexity of neural processing. In this paper, we extend the STiDi-BP algorithm to employ it in deeper and convolutional architectures. The evaluation results…
