Recently, the dense binary pixel Gigavision camera had been introduced, emulating a digital version of the photographic film. While seems to be a promising solution for HDR imaging, its output is not directly usable and requires an image reconstruction process. In this work, we formulate this problem as the minimization of a convex objective combining a maximum-likelihood term with a sparse synthesis prior. We present MLNet - a novel feed-forward neural network, producing acceptable output quality at a fixed complexity and is two orders of magnitude faster than iterative algorithms. We present state of the art results in the abstract.

This paper addresses the problem of determining dense pixel correspondences between two images and its application to geometric correspondence verification in image retrieval. The main contribution is a geometric correspondence verification approach for re-ranking a shortlist of retrieved database images based on their dense pair-wise matching with the query image at a pixel level. We determine a set of cyclically consistent dense pixel matches between the pair of images and evaluate local similarity of matched pixels using neural network based image descriptors. Final re-ranking is based on a…

3D face reconstruction is a fundamental task that can facilitate numerous applications such as robust facial analysis and augmented reality. It is also a challenging task due to the lack of high-quality datasets that can fuel current deep learning-based methods. However, existing datasets are limited in quantity, realisticity and diversity. To circumvent these hurdles, we introduce Pixel-Face, a large-scale, high-resolution and diverse 3D face dataset with massive annotations. Specifically, Pixel-Face contains 855 subjects aging from 18 to 80. Each subject has more than 20 samples with various…

This work observed the problem of fingerprint image recognition in the case of missing pixels from the original image. The possibility of missing pixels recovery is tested by applying the Compressive Sensing approach. Namely, different percentage of missing pixels is observed and the image reconstruction is done by applying commonly used approach for sparse image reconstruction. The theory is verified by experiments, showing successful image reconstruction and later person identification even if less then 90% of the image pixels is missing.

Object instance segmentation is one of the most fundamental but challenging tasks in computer vision, and it requires the pixel-level image understanding. Most existing approaches address this problem by adding a mask prediction branch to a two-stage object detector with the Region Proposal Network (RPN). Although producing good segmentation results, the efficiency of these two-stage approaches is far from satisfactory, restricting their applicability in practice. In this paper, we propose a one-stage framework, SPRNet, which performs efficient instance segmentation by introducing a single pix…

We introduce a unified single and multi-view neural implicit 3D reconstruction framework VPFusion. VPFusion attains high-quality reconstruction using both - 3D feature volume to capture 3D-structure-aware context, and pixel-aligned image features to capture fine local detail. Existing approaches use RNN, feature pooling, or attention computed independently in each view for multi-view fusion. RNNs suffer from long-term memory loss and permutation variance, while feature pooling or independently computed attention leads to representation in each view being unaware of other views before the final…
The pursuit of smaller pixel sizes at ever increasing resolution in digital image sensors is mainly driven by the stringent price and form-factor requirements of sensors and optics in the cellular phone market. Recently, Eric Fossum proposed a novel concept of an image sensor with dense sub-diffraction limit one-bit pixels jots, which can be considered a digital emulation of silver halide photographic film. This idea has been recently embodied as the EPFL Gigavision camera. A major bottleneck in the design of such sensors is the image reconstruction process, producing a continuous high dynamic…

Training a deep neural network is a non-trivial task. Not only the tuning of hyperparameters, but also the gathering and selection of training data, the design of the loss function, and the construction of training schedules is important to get the most out of a model. In this study, we perform a set of experiments all related to these issues. The model for which different training strategies are investigated is the recently presented SDC descriptor network (stacked dilated convolution). It is used to describe images on pixel-level for dense matching tasks. Our work analyzes SDC in more detail…

Dense pixel matching is required for many computer vision algorithms such as disparity, optical flow or scene flow estimation. Feature Pyramid Networks (FPN) have proven to be a suitable feature extractor for CNN-based dense matching tasks. FPN generates well localized and semantically strong features at multiple scales. However, the generic FPN is not utilizing its full potential, due to its reasonable but limited localization accuracy. Thus, we present ResFPN -- a multi-resolution feature pyramid network with multiple residual skip connections, where at any scale, we leverage the information…

For intelligent robotics applications, extending 3D mapping to 3D semantic mapping enables robots to, not only localize themselves with respect to the scene's geometrical features but also simultaneously understand the higher level meaning of the scene contexts. Most previous methods focus on geometric 3D reconstruction and scene understanding independently notwithstanding the fact that joint estimation can boost the accuracy of the semantic mapping. In this paper, a dense RGB-D semantic mapping system with a Pixel-Voxel network is proposed, which can perform dense 3D mapping while simultaneou…

Masked Image Modeling (MIM) has achieved promising progress with the advent of Masked Autoencoders (MAE) and BEiT. However, subsequent works have complicated the framework with new auxiliary tasks or extra pre-trained models, inevitably increasing computational overhead. This paper undertakes a fundamental analysis of MIM from the perspective of pixel reconstruction, which examines the input image patches and reconstruction target, and highlights two critical but previously overlooked bottlenecks. Based on this analysis, we propose a remarkably simple and effective method, {\ourmethod}, that e…

Determining dense semantic correspondences across objects and scenes is a difficult problem that underpins many higher-level computer vision algorithms. Unlike canonical dense correspondence problems which consider images that are spatially or temporally adjacent, semantic correspondence is characterized by images that share similar high-level structures whose exact appearance and geometry may differ. Motivated by object recognition literature and recent work on rapidly estimating linear classifiers, we treat semantic correspondence as a constrained detection problem, where an exemplar LDA cla…

The pixelwise reconstruction error of deep autoencoders is often utilized for image novelty detection and localization under the assumption that pixels with high error indicate which parts of the input image are unfamiliar and therefore likely to be novel. This assumed correlation between pixels with high reconstruction error and novel regions of input images has not been verified and may limit the accuracy of these methods. In this paper we utilize saliency maps to evaluate whether this correlation exists. Saliency maps reveal directly how much a change in each input pixel would affect recons…
Non-parametric mesh reconstruction has recently shown significant progress in 3D hand and body applications. In these methods, mesh vertices and edges are visible to neural networks, enabling the possibility to establish a direct mapping between 2D image pixels and 3D mesh vertices. In this paper, we seek to establish and exploit this mapping with a simple and compact architecture. The network is designed with these considerations: 1) aggregating both local 2D image features from the encoder and 3D geometric features captured in the mesh decoder; 2) decoding coarse-to-fine meshes along the dec…

The pixel-wise dense prediction tasks based on weakly supervisions currently use Class Attention Maps (CAM) to generate pseudo masks as ground-truth. However, the existing methods typically depend on the painstaking training modules, which may bring in grinding computational overhead and complex training procedures. In this work, the semantic structure aware inference (SSA) is proposed to explore the semantic structure information hidden in different stages of the CNN-based network to generate high-quality CAM in the model inference. Specifically, the semantic structure modeling module (SSM) i…

Object classification is one of the many holy grails in computer vision and as such has resulted in a very large number of algorithms being proposed already. Specifically in recent years there has been considerable progress in this area primarily due to the increased efficiency and accessibility of deep learning techniques. In fact, for single-label object classification [i.e. only one object present in the image] the state-of-the-art techniques employ deep neural networks and are reporting very close to human-like performance. There are specialized applications in which single-label object-le…

Self-supervised representation learning for visual pre-training has achieved remarkable success with sample (instance or pixel) discrimination and semantics discovery of instance, whereas there still exists a non-negligible gap between pre-trained model and downstream dense prediction tasks. Concretely, these downstream tasks require more accurate representation, in other words, the pixels from the same object must belong to a shared semantic category, which is lacking in the previous methods. In this work, we present Dense Semantic Contrast (DSC) for modeling semantic category decision bounda…
Obtaining dense 3D reconstrution with low computational cost is one of the important goals in the field of SLAM. In this paper we propose a dense 3D reconstruction framework from monocular multispectral video sequences using jointly semi-dense SLAM and Multispectral Photometric Stereo approaches. Starting from multispectral video, SALM (a) reconstructs a semi-dense 3D shape that will be densified;(b) recovers relative sparse depth map that is then fed as prioris into optimization-based multispectral photometric stereo for a more accurate dense surface normal recovery;(c)obtains camera pose tha…

Digital images are commonly represented as regular 2D arrays, so pixels are organized in form of a matrix addressed by integers. However, there are many image processing operations, such as rotation or motion compensation, that produce pixels at non-integer positions. Typically, image reconstruction techniques cannot handle samples at non-integer positions. In this paper, we propose to use triangulation-based reconstruction as initial estimate that is later refined by a novel adaptive denoising framework. Simulations reveal that improvements of up to more than 1.8 dB (in terms of PSNR) are ach…

We introduce a variational method for multi-view shape-from-shading under natural illumination. The key idea is to couple PDE-based solutions for single-image based shape-from-shading problems across multiple images and multiple color channels by means of a variational formulation. Rather than alternatingly solving the individual SFS problems and optimizing the consistency across images and channels which is known to lead to suboptimal results, we propose an efficient solution of the coupled problem by means of an ADMM algorithm. In numerous experiments on both simulated and real imagery, we d…
This paper proposes a new deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) architecture that learns pixel embeddings, such that pairwise distances between the embeddings can be used to infer whether or not the pixels lie on the same region. That is, for any two pixels on the same object, the embeddings are trained to be similar; for any pair that straddles an object boundary, the embeddings are trained to be dissimilar. Experimental results show that when this embedding network is used in conjunction with a DCNN trained on semantic segmentation, there is a systematic improvement in per-pixel classific…

We present a self-supervised learning-based pipeline for dense 3D reconstruction from full-length monocular endoscopic videos without a priori modeling of anatomy or shading. Our method only relies on unlabeled monocular endoscopic videos and conventional multi-view stereo algorithms, and requires neither manual interaction nor patient CT in both training and application phases. In a cross-patient study using CT scans as groundtruth, we show that our method is able to produce photo-realistic dense 3D reconstructions with submillimeter mean residual errors from endoscopic videos from unseen pat…
This paper investigates the possibility of reconstruction of images considering that they are sparse in the DCT transformation domain. Two approaches are considered. One when the image is pre-processed in the DCT domain, using 8x8 blocks. The image is made sparse by setting the smallest DCT coefficients to zero. In the other case the original image is considered without pre-processing, assuming the sparsity as intrinsic property of the analyzed image. A gradient based algorithm is used to recover a large number of missing pixels in the image. The case of a salt-and-paper noise affecting a larg…

Classification techniques for images of handwritten characters are susceptible to noise. Quadtrees can be an efficient representation for learning from sparse features. In this paper, we improve the effectiveness of probabilistic quadtrees by using a pixel level classifier to extract the character pixels and remove noise from handwritten character images. The pixel level denoiser (a deep belief network) uses the map responses obtained from a pretrained CNN as features for reconstructing the characters eliminating noise. We experimentally demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by reconst…
We seek a practical method for establishing dense correspondences between two images with similar content, but possibly different 3D scenes. One of the challenges in designing such a system is the local scale differences of objects appearing in the two images. Previous methods often considered only small subsets of image pixels; matching only pixels for which stable scales may be reliably estimated. More recently, others have considered dense correspondences, but with substantial costs associated with generating, storing and matching scale invariant descriptors. Our work here is motivated by t…

While self-supervised learning has enabled effective representation learning in the absence of labels, for vision, video remains a relatively untapped source of supervision. To address this, we propose Pixel-level Correspondence (PiCo), a method for dense contrastive learning from video. By tracking points with optical flow, we obtain a correspondence map which can be used to match local features at different points in time. We validate PiCo on standard benchmarks, outperforming self-supervised baselines on multiple dense prediction tasks, without compromising performance on image classificati…

We propose a fast, accurate matching method for estimating dense pixel correspondences across scenes. It is a challenging problem to estimate dense pixel correspondences between images depicting different scenes or instances of the same object category. While most such matching methods rely on hand-crafted features such as SIFT, we learn features from a large amount of unlabeled image patches using unsupervised learning. Pixel-layer features are obtained by encoding over the dictionary, followed by spatial pooling to obtain patch-layer features. The learned features are then seamlessly embedde…
The key aspect of parallel-beam X-ray CT is forward and back projection, but its computational burden continues to be an obstacle for applications. We propose a method to improve the performance of related algorithms by calculating the Gram filter exactly and interpolating the sinogram signal optimally. In addition, the detector blur effect can be included in our model efficiently. The improvements in speed and quality for back projection and iterative reconstruction are shown in our experiments on both analytical phantoms and real CT images.
This paper presents a method to reconstruct dense semantic trajectory stream of human interactions in 3D from synchronized multiple videos. The interactions inherently introduce self-occlusion and illumination/appearance/shape changes, resulting in highly fragmented trajectory reconstruction with noisy and coarse semantic labels. Our conjecture is that among many views, there exists a set of views that can confidently recognize the visual semantic label of a 3D trajectory. We introduce a new representation called 3D semantic map---a probability distribution over the semantic labels per traject…

Reconstructing a high-resolution 3D model of an object is a challenging task in computer vision. Designing scalable and light-weight architectures is crucial while addressing this problem. Existing point-cloud based reconstruction approaches directly predict the entire point cloud in a single stage. Although this technique can handle low-resolution point clouds, it is not a viable solution for generating dense, high-resolution outputs. In this work, we introduce DensePCR, a deep pyramidal network for point cloud reconstruction that hierarchically predicts point clouds of increasing resolution.…

In this paper, we address the semantic segmentation task with a new context aggregation scheme named \emph{object context}, which focuses on enhancing the role of object information. Motivated by the fact that the category of each pixel is inherited from the object it belongs to, we define the object context for each pixel as the set of pixels that belong to the same category as the given pixel in the image. We use a binary relation matrix to represent the relationship between all pixels, where the value one indicates the two selected pixels belong to the same category and zero otherwise. We p…
