The electronic structure of SrTiO3 and SrHfO3 (001) surfaces with oxygen vacancies is studied by means of first-principles calculations. We reveal how oxygen vacancies within the first atomic layer of the SrTiO3 surface (i) induce a large antiferrodistortive motion of the oxygen octahedra at the surface, (ii) drive localized magnetic moments on the Ti-3d orbitals close to the vacancies and (iii) form a two-dimensional electron gas localized within the first layers. The analysis of the spin-texture of this system exhibits a splitting of the energy bands according to the Zeeman interaction, lowering of the Ti-3dxy level in comparison with dxz and dyz and also an in-plane precession of the spins. No Rashba-like splitting for the ground state neither for ab-initio molecular dynamics trajectory at 400K is recognized as suggested recently by A. F. Santander-Syro et al. [1]. Instead, a sizeable Rashba-like splitting is observed when the Ti atom is replaced by a heavier Hf atom with a much larger spin-orbit interaction. However, we observe the disappearance of the magnetism and the surface two dimensional electron gas when full structural optimization of the SrHfO3 surface is performed. Our results uncover the sensitive interplay of spin-orbit coupling, atomic relaxations and magnetism when tuning these Sr-based perovskites.
We address the long-standing question of the nature of oxygen vacancies in strontium titanate, using a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) to investigate in particular the effect of vacancy-site correlations on the electronic properties. Our approach uses a minimal low-energy electronic subspace including the Ti-$t_{2g}$ orbitals plus an additional vacancy-centered Wannier function, and provides an intuitive and physically transparent framework to study the effect of the local electron-electron interactions on the excess charge introduced by the …
The tri-layered perovskite Sr4Rh3O10 is reported for the first time. High-pressure and high-temperature heating (6 GPa and 1500 C) brought about successful preparation of a polycrystalline sample of the expected member at n=3 of Srn+1RhnO3n+1. Neutron-diffraction studies revealed the orthorhombic crystal structure (Pbam) at room temperature and 3.4 K. Local structure distortions rotationally tilt the RhO6 octahedra ~12 degrees in the perovskite-based blocks along the c-axis, and approximately a 20 % disorder was found in sequence of the alternating rotational tilt. The sample was also investig…
Oxygen vacancies, especially their distribution, are directly coupled to the electromagnetic properties of oxides and related emergent functionalities that have implication in device applications. Here using a homoepitaxial strontium titanate thin film, we demonstrate a controlled manipulation of the oxygen vacancy distribution using the mechanical force from a scanning probe microscope tip. By combining Kelvin probe force microscopy imaging and phase-field simulations, we show that oxygen vacancies can move under a stress-gradient-induced depolarisation field. When tailored, this nanoscale fl…
Oxygen vacancies in strontium titanate surfaces (SrTiO3) have been linked to the presence of a two-dimensional electron gas with unique behavior. We perform a detailed density functional theory study of the lattice and electronic structure of SrTiO3 slabs with multiple oxygen vacancies, with a main focus on two vacancies near a titanium dioxide terminated SrTiO3 surface. We conclude based on total energies that the two vacancies preferably inhabit the first two layers, i.e. they cluster vertically, while in the direction parallel to the surface, the vacancies show a weak tendency towards equal…
We report on a study of charge transport in EuTiO$_{3-δ}$ single crystals with carrier density tuned across several orders of magnitude. Comparing this system with other quasi-cubic perovskites, in particular strontium titanate, we draw a comprehensive picture of metal-insulator transition and dilute metallicity in this $AB$O$_3$ family. Because of a lower electric permittivity, the metal-insulator transition in EuTiO$_{3-δ}$ occurs at higher carrier densities compared to SrTiO$_3$. At low temperature, a distinct $T^2$ resistivity is visible. Its prefactor $A$ smoothly decreases with increasin…
The dependencies on strain and oxygen vacancies of the ferroelectric polarization and the weak ferromagnetic magnetization in the multiferroic material bismuth ferrite, BiFeO_3, are investigated using first principles density functional theory calculations. The electric polarization is found to be rather independent of strain, in striking contrast to most conventional perovskite ferroelectrics. It is also not significantly affected by oxygen vacancies, or by the combined presence of strain and oxygen vacancies. The magnetization is also unaffected by strain, however the incorporation of oxygen…
The spinel/perovskite heterointerface $γ$-Al$_2$O$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ hosts a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) with electron mobilities exceeding those in its all-perovskite counterpart LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ by more than an order of magnitude despite the abundance of oxygen vacancies which act as electron donors as well as scattering sites. By means of resonant soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and \textit{ab initio} calculations we reveal the presence of a sharply localized type of oxygen vacancies at the very interface due to the local breaking of the perovskite symmetry. We explain the ex…
Strontium titanate, SrTiO3, a widely used substrate material for electronic oxide thin film devices, has provided many interesting features. In a combination with a similar oxide material, LaAlO3, it has recently received great interest. It was suggested that two-dimensional electron gas is formed at the interface between SrTiO3 and LaAlO3, resulting in high electrical conductivity and mobility. In this report we demonstrate that the transport properties in those heterostructures are very sensitive to the deposition parameters during thin film growth. Using cathode- and photoluminescence studi…
Using {\it ab initio} methods, we investigate the modification of the magnetic properties of the $m=2$ member of the strontium iridates Ruddlesden-Popper series Sr$_{m+1}$Ir$_{m}$O$_{3m+1}$, bilayer Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, induced by epitaxial strain and oxygen vacancies. Unlike the single layer compound Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, which exhibits a robust in-plane magnetic order, the energy difference between in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic orderings in Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ is much smaller and it is expected that small external perturbations could induce magnetic transitions. Our results indicate that epitaxial…
We have grown and studied high quality SrRuO3 films grown by MBE as well as PLD. By changing the oxygen activity during deposition we were able to make SrRuO3 samples that were stoichiometric (low oxygen activity) or with ruthenium vacancies (high oxygen activity). Samples with strontium vacancies were found impossible to produce since the ruthenium would precipitate out as RuO2. The volume of the unit cell of SrRuO3 becomes larger as more ruthenium vacancies are introduced. The residual resistivity ratio (RRR) and room temperature resistivity were found to systematically depend on the volume …
SrTiO$_3$, a quantum paralectric, displays a detectable phonon thermal Hall effect (THE). Here we show that the amplitude of THE is extremely sensitive to stoichiometry. It drastically decreases upon substitution of a tiny fraction of Sr atoms with Ca, which stabilizes the ferroelectric order. It drastically increases by an even lower density of oxygen vacancies, which turn the system to a dilute metal. The enhancement in the metallic state exceeds by far the sum of the electronic and the phononic contributions. We explain this observation as an outcome of three features: i) heat is mostly tra…
We introduce an effective model for $e_g$ electrons to describe three-dimensional perovskite (La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ and La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_3$) manganites and study the magnetic and orbital order on $4\times 4\times 4$ cluster using correlated wave functions. The model includes the kinetic energy, and on-site Coulomb interactions for $e_g$ electrons, antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction between $S=3/2$ core spins, and the coupling between $e_g$ electrons and Jahn-Teller modes. The model reproduces the experimentally observed magnetic order: ($i$) $A$-type antiferromagnetic phase …
Room temperature ferromagnetism was characterized for thin films of SrTi$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$O$_{3-δ}$ grown by pulsed laser deposition on SrTiO$_{3}$ and Si substrates under different oxygen pressures and after annealing under oxygen and vacuum conditions. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism demonstrated that the magnetization originated from Fe$^{2+}$ cations, whereas Fe$^{3+}$ and Ti$^{4+}$ did not contribute. Films with the highest magnetic moment (0.8 μB per Fe) had the highest measured Fe$^{2+}$:Fe${^3+}$ ratio of 0.1 corresponding to the largest concentration of oxygen vacancies (δ = 0.19). …
We report on the magnetic, resistive, and structural studies of perovskite La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$CoO$_{3-δ}$. By using the relation of synthesis temperature and oxygen partial pressure to oxygen stoichiometry obtained from thermogravimetric analysis, we have synthesized a series of samples with precisely controlled $δ=0.00-0.49$. These samples show three structural phases at $δ=0.00-0.15$, $\approx0.25$, $\approx0.5$, and two-phase behavior for other oxygen contents. The stoichiometric material with $δ=0.00$ is a cubic ferromagnetic metal with the Curie temperature $T_{\rm C}=274$ K. The increas…
Defect engineering has brought about a unique level of control for Si-based semiconductors, leading to the optimization of various opto-electronic properties and devices. With regard to perovskite transition metal oxides, oxygen vacancies have been a key ingredient in defect engineering, as they play a central role in determining the crystal field and consequent electronic structure, leading to important electronic and magnetic phase transitions. Therefore, experimental approaches toward understanding the role of defects in complex oxides have been largely limited to controlling oxygen vacanci…
We report a uniaxial pressure-dependence of magnetism in layered perovskite strontium ruthenate Sr3Ru2O7. By applying a relatively small uniaxial pressure, greater than 0.1 GPa normal to the RuO2 layer, ferromagnetic ordering manifests below 80 K from the enhanced-paramagnet. Magnetization at 1 kOe and 2 K becomes 100 times larger than that under ambient condition. Uniaxial pressure dependence of Curie temperature T_C suggests the first order magnetic transition. Origin of this uniaxial-pressure induced ferromagnetism is discussed in terms of the rotation of RuO6 octahedra within the RuO2 plan…
Bodies in relative motion separated by a gap of a few nanometers can experience a tiny friction force. This non-contact dissipation can have various origins and can be successfully measured by a sensitive pendulum atomic force microscope tip oscillating laterally above the surface. Here, we report on the observation of dissipation peaks at selected voltage-dependent tip-surface distances for oxygen-deficient strontium titanate (SrTiO_3) surface at low temperatures (T = 5K). The observed dissipation peaks are attributed to tip-induced charge and spin state transitions in quantum-dot-like entiti…
We use density functional theory to calculate the structure, band-gap and magnetic properties of oxygen-deficient SrTi$_{1-x-y}$Fe$_x$Co$_y$O$_{3-δ}$ with x = y = 0.125 and $δ$ = (0,0.125,0.25). The valence and the high or low spin-states of the Co and Fe ions, as well as the lattice distortion and the band-gap, depend on the oxygen deficiency, the locations of the vacancies, and on the direction of the Fe-Co axis. A charge redistribution that resembles a self-regulatory response lies behind the valence spin-state changes. Ferromagnetism dominates, and both the magnetization and the band gap a…
Oxygen vacancy is intrinsically coupled with magnetic, electronic and transport properties of transition-metal oxide materials and directly determines their multifunctionality. Here, we demonstrate reversible control of oxygen content by post-annealing at temperature lower than 300 degree centigrade and realize the reversible metal-insulator transition in epitaxial NdNiO3 films. Importantly, over six orders of magnitude in the resistance modulation and a large change in optical band gap are demonstrated at room temperature without destroying the parent framework and changing the p-type conduct…
An epitaxial heterojunction made of a p-type perovskite manganite La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 film and an n-type strontium titanate SrTiO3:Nb substrate has been fabricated by the pulsed laser deposition technique. The I - V characteristics and photovoltaic properties are measured under a UV light irradiation in a wide temperature range down to 10 K. It is found that the junction works as an efficient UV photodiode with a large external quantum efficiency of 28%. It is also demonstrated that the manganite film can be doped with a certain amount of holes by the photcarrier injection. The maximum surface hole…
A series of polycrystalline samples of Sr2-xIrO4 have been synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. The crystal structure of this doped system can be explained on the basis of the extended nature of 5d electrons and strontium vacancies in Sr2-xIrO4. The analysis of the temperature-dependent resistance of these samples reveals the semiconducting feature, where three dimensional variable range hopping behavior is observed at temperatures lower than 120K, Arrhenius type in intermediate temperatures from 140K to 200K, and two-dimensional (2D) weak localization at high temperatures from 220K t…
