Superconductivity is commonly described as a macroscopic quantum phenomenon. However, it arises from microscopic mechanisms occurring at the nanometer scale as illustrated, for example, by the non-trivial pairing in unconventional superconductors. More recently, also local interactions with superconductors in the context of Majorana fermions became of interest. A very direct way to study the atomic scale properties of superconductors is given by the combination of the Josephson effect with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), also referred to as JSTM. Here, the critical Josephson current serves as a direct local probe of the superconducting ground state and may reveal valuable information that is often inaccessible when studying quasi-particle excitation spectra. We show that we can extract local values of the critical Josephson current from JSTM measurements in the dynamical Coulomb blockade regime. Furthermore, we experimentally determine the regime of sequential Cooper pair tunneling, which is in accordance to theoretical predictions. Our study presents new insights on the tunneling mechanisms in Josephson junctions and lays the basis for the implementation of JSTM as a versatile probe for superconductivity.
We have investigated the influence of shot noise on the IV-curves of a single mesoscopic Josephson junction. We find that the blockade of the Cooper pair current is strongly suppressed in the presence of shot noise due to tunnelling in an adjacent SIN junction. Our experimental findings can be accounted for by an extension of the phase correlation theory. Shot-noise effect in a resistive environment R can be characterized by the effective noise temperature T_N = eIR /2 k_B, which means that a Josephson junction can easily detect shot noise from a current well below 1 pA.
We study the behavior of a topological Josephson junction in which two topological superconductors are coupled through a quantum dot. We focus on the case with the bulk superconducting gap being the largest energy scale. Two parameter regimes are investigated: a weak tunneling between the dot and the superconductors, with the dot near its charge degeneracy point, and a strong tunneling regime in which the transmission between the dot and the superconductors is nearly perfect. We show that in the former situation, the Andreev spectrum for each sector with fixed fermion parity consists of only t…
Charge and spin density waves are highly correlated electron systems that can transport an electric current. A model is discussed in which a field E induces the creation, by quantum tunneling, of pairs of oppositely charged solitons and antisolitons in a density wave. Pair creation is blocked, for fields below a threshold value ET, because the increase in electrostatic energy would violate energy conservation. When E > ET, this Coulomb blockade mechanism time- correlates the pair creation and annihilation events. The model provides a natural explanation for the extremely small phase displaceme…
Magnetic Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have been presumed to be immune to proximity-induced spin-singlet superconducting pairing due to a chirality blockade of the regular Andreev reflection. In this work we study all possible superconducting pairing induced in a WSM sandwiched between two conventional superconductors in a Josephson junction setup. We confirm that, while conventional intra-orbital $s$-wave pairing is present on the surface of the WSM, it cannot propagate into the bulk due to the chirality blockade. However, inter-orbital $s$-wave pairing, with both even-frequency spin-singlet and odd…
We demonstrate that perfect conversion between charged supercurrents in superconductors and neutral supercurrents in electron-hole pair condensates is possible via a new Andreev-like scattering mechanism. As a result, when two superconducting circuits are coupled through a bilayer exciton condensate, the superflow in both layers is drastically modified. Depending on the phase biases the supercurrents can be completely blocked or exhibit perfect drag.
We study the Josephson effect for a topologically nontrivial superconducting (TS) wire with Majorana fermion end states and tunnel-coupled to s-wave BCS superconducting (S) electrodes. In an S-TS junction, no supercurrent flow is possible under fairly general conditions. For the S-TS-S junction, bulk TS quasiparticles must be accessible to have a Josephson effect. In the noninteracting case, we derive the exact current-phase relation (CPR) and find π-periodic behavior with negative critical current for weak tunnel couplings. Charging effects then cause the anomalous CPR $I(φ)=I_c \cosφ$, where…
Amplitude of the Coulomb blockade oscillations is calculated for a single-mode Josephson junction with arbitrary electron transparency $D$. It is shown that the Coulomb blockade is suppressed in ballistic junctions with $D\to 1$. The suppression is described quantitatively as the Landau-Zener transition in imaginary time.
Experiments on one-dimensional small capacitance Josephson Junction arrays are described. The arrays have a junction capacitance that is much larger than the stray capacitance of the electrodes, which we argue is important for observation of Coulomb blockade. The Josephson energy can be tuned in situ and an evolution from Josephson-like to Coulomb blockade behavior is observed. This evolution can be described as a superconducting to insulating, quantum phase transition. In the Coulomb blockade state, hysteretic current-voltage characteristics are described by a dynamic model which is dual to t…
Coulomb interaction of charges in a metamaterial may be expressed via its effective dielectric response function. Coulomb interaction appears considerably enhanced in artificially engineered epsilon near zero (ENZ) and hyperbolic metamaterials. Indeed, very recently it was observed that negative ENZ conditions enhance superconducting properties of a composite metamaterial via enhancement of Cooper pairing. Here we demonstrate that positive ENZ conditions enhance Coulomb repulsion of charges, leading to considerable enhancement of the Coulomb blockade effect in such metamaterials. Similar to hi…
We investigate theoretically transport properties of one- and two-dimensional regular Josephson junction arrays (JJAs) in an insulating state. We derive the low-temperature current-voltage characteristics for the current mediated by the Cooper pair transfer across the system. In the case where the screening length associated with the capacitance of the islands to the ground is much larger than the island's size, we find that transport is governed by the macroscopic Coulomb blockade effect with the gap well exceeding a single island charging energy. In the limit when the screening length is muc…
The problem of Josephson current through Coulomb-blocked nanoscale superconductor-normal-superconductor structure with tunnel contacts is reconsidered. Two different contributions to the phase-biased supercurrent are identified, which are dominant in the limits of weak and strong Coulomb interaction. Full expression for the free energy valid at arbitrary Coulomb strength is found. The current derived from this free energy interpolates between known results for weak and strong Coulomb interaction as phase bias changes from 0 to pi. In the broad range of Coulomb strength the current-phase relati…
Coulomb blockaded transport of topological superconducting nanowires provides an opportunity to probe the localization of states at both ends of the system in a two-terminal geometry. In addition, it provides a way for checking for subgap states away from the leads. At the same time, Coulomb blockade transport is difficult to analyze because of the interacting nature of the problem arising from the nonperturbative Coulomb interaction inherent in the phenomenon. Here we show that the Coulomb blockade transport can be modeled at the same level of complexity as quantum point contact tunneling tha…
We analyze the dynamical Coulomb blockade of multiple Andreev reflections (MAR) in a superconducting quantum point contact coupled to a macroscopic impedance. We find that at very low transmission the blockade scales as $n^2$ with $n = {Int}(2Δ/eV)$, where $V$ is the bias voltage and $Δ$ is the superconducting gap, as it would correspond to the occurrence of "shots" of charge $ne$. For higher transmission the blockade is reduced both due to Pauli principle and to elastic renormalization of the MAR probability, and for certain voltage regions it may even become an "antiblockade", i.e. the curre…
In the classical Josephson effect the phase difference across the junction is well defined, and the supercurrent is reduced only weakly by phase diffusion. For mesoscopic junctions with small capacitance the phase undergoes large quantum fluctuations, and the current is also decreased by Coulomb blockade effects. We discuss the behavior of the current-voltage characteristics in a large range of parameters comprising the phase diffusion regime with coherent Josephson current as well as the supercurrent peak due to incoherent Cooper pair tunneling in the Coulomb blockade regime.
We have fabricated and measured superconducting single-electron transistors with Al leads and Nb islands. At bias voltages below the gap of Nb we observe clear signatures of resonant tunneling of Cooper pairs, and of Coulomb blockade of the subgap currents due to linewidth broadening of the energy levels in the superconducting density of states of Nb. The experimental results are in good agreement with numerical simulations.
The supercurrent of a Josephson junction is reduced by phase diffusion. For ultrasmall capacitance junctions the current may be further decreased by Coulomb blockade effects. We calculate the Cooper pair current by means of time-dependent perturbation theory to all orders in the Josephson coupling energy and obtain the current-voltage characteristic in closed form in a range of parameters of experimental interest. The results comprehend phase diffusion of the coherent Josephson current in the classical regime as well as the supercurrent peak due to incoherent Cooper pair tunneling in the stron…
The effects of Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling (MQT) and Coulomb Blockade (CB) in Josephson junctions are of considerable significance both for the manifestations of quantum mechanics on the macroscopic scale and potential technological applications. These two complementary effects are shown to be clearly distinguishable from the associated noise spectra. The current noise is determined exactly and a rather sharp crossover between flux noise in the MQT and charge noise in the CB regions is found as the applied voltage is changed. Related results hold for the voltage noise in current-biased junct…
We derive low energy effective action for a short coherent conductor between normal (N) and superconducting (S) reservoirs. We evaluate interaction correction $δG$ to Andreev conductance and demonstrate a close relation between Coulomb effects and shot noise in NS systems. In the diffusive limit doubling of both shot noise power and charge of the carriers yields $|δG|$ four times bigger than in the normal case. Our predictions can be directly tested in future experiments.
Semiconductor nanowires provide promising low-dimensional systems for the study of quantum transport phenomena in combination with superconductivity. Here we investigate the competition between the Coulomb blockade effect, Andreev reflection, and quantum interference, in InAs and InP nanowires connected to aluminum-based superconducting electrodes. We compare three limiting cases depending on the tunnel coupling strength and the characteristic Coulomb interaction energy. For weak coupling and large charging energy, negative differential conductance is observed as a direct consequence of the BC…
Motivated by the discovery of superconductivity in the infinite-layer nickelate family, we report an experimental endeavor to clean the surface of nickelate superconductor Pr0.8Sr0.2NiO2 films by Ar+ ion sputtering and subsequent annealing, and we study their electronic structures by cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The annealed surfaces are characterized by nano-sized clusters and Coulomb staircases with periodicity inversely proportional to the projected area of the nanoclusters, consistent with a double-barrier tunneling junction model. Moreover, the dynamical Coulo…
