The goals of this article are as follows: (1) To determine the irreducible components of the affine varieties parametrizing the representations of $ Λ$ with dimension vector d, where $ Λ$ traces a major class of finite dimensional algebras; (2) To generically describe the representations encoded by the components. The target class consists of those truncated path algebras $ Λ$ over an algebraically closed field K which are based on a quiver Q without oriented cycles. The main result characterizes the irreducible components of the representation variety in representation-theoretic terms and provides a means of listing them from quiver and Loewy length of $ Λ$. Combined with existing theory, this classification moreover yields an array of generic features of the modules parametrized by the components, such as generic minimal projective presentations, generic sub- and quotient modules, etc. Our second principal result pins down the generic socle series of the modules in the components; it does so for more general $ Λ$, in fact.
The information on truncated path algebras of acyclic quivers supplements the theory available in the special case where $ Λ= KQ $, filling in generic data on the d-dimensional representations of Q with any fixed Loewy length.
We determine the regular irreducible components of the variety mod(A,d), where A=kQ/I is a string algebra and I is generated by a set of paths of length two. Our case is among the first examples of descriptions of irreducible components, aside from hereditary, tubular and Gelfand-Ponomarev algebras.
Let A be a tame quasi-tilted algebra and d the dimension vector of an indecomposable A-module. In the paper we prove that each irreducible component of the variety of A-modules of dimension vector d is regular in codimension one.
We give a combinatorial description of all affine spherical varieties with prescribed weight monoid $Γ$. As an application, we obtain a characterization of the irreducible components of Alexeev and Brion's moduli scheme $\mathrm M_Γ$ for such varieties. Moreover, we find several sufficient conditions for $\mathrm M_Γ$ to be irreducible and exhibit several examples where $\mathrm M_Γ$ is reducible. Finally, we provide examples of non-reduced $\mathrm M_Γ$.
Let $G$ be the Weil restriction of a general linear group. By extending the method of semi-modules developed by de Jong, Oort, Viehmann and Hamacher, we obtain a stratification of the affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for $G$ (in the affine Grassmannian) attached to a minuscule coweight and a basic element. As an application, we verify a conjecture by Chen and Zhu on irreducible components of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for $G$.
By extending the method of semi-modules developed by de Jong, Oort, Viehmann and Hamacher, we introduce a stratification for the affne Deligne-Lusztig variety (in the affne Grassmannian) attached to attached to a minuscule cocharacter and a basic element. As an application, we complete the proof of a conjecture on the irreducible components of affne Deligne-Lusztig varieties, due to Miaofen Chen and Xinwen Zhu.
We give an explicit description of the irreducible components of two-row Springer fibers in type A as closed subvarieties in certain Nakajima quiver varieties in terms of quiver representations. By taking invariants under a variety automorphism, we obtain an explicit algebraic description of the irreducible components of two-row Springer fibers of classical type. As a consequence, we discover relations on isotropic flags that describe the irreducible components.
We study a family of affine varieties arising from a version of an old problem due to Birkhoff asking for the classification of embeddings of finite abelian p-groups. We show that all of these varieties are irreducible and have a dense orbit.
We expand the existing arsenal of methods for exploring the irreducible components of the varieties $Rep(A,\bold d)$ which parametrize the representations with dimension vector $\bold d$ of a finite dimensional algebra $A$. To do so, we move back and forth between $Rep(A,\bold d)$ and a projective variety, $GRASS(A,\bold d)$, parametrizing the same set of isomorphism classes of modules. In particular, we show the irreducible components to be accessible in a highly compressed format within the projective setting. Our results include necessary and sufficient conditions for unirationality, smooth…
We call a finite-dimensional K-algebra A geometrically irreducible if for all d, all connected components of the affine scheme of d-dimensional A-modules are irreducible. We show that the geometrically irreducible algebras without loops (this includes all algebras of finite global dimension) are the hereditary algebras. We also show that truncated polynomial rings are the only geometrically irreducible local algebras. Finally, we formulate a conjectural classification of all geometrically irreducible algebras.
We call a finite-dimensional K-algebra A geometrically irreducible if for all d all connected components of the affine scheme of d-dimensional A-modules are irreducible. We prove that a geometrically irreducible algebra with exactly two simple modules has to be of a very special form, which we describe. Based on this result we prove that every minimal geometrically irreducible algebra without shortcuts in its Gabriel quiver has at most two simple modules.
We define a binary operation on the set of irreducible components of Lusztig's nilpotent varieties of a quiver. We study commutativity, cancellativity and associativity of this operation. We focus on rigid irreducible components and discuss inductive ways to construct them.
We analyze the asymptotic behavior of certain twisted orbital integrals arising from the study of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. The main tools include the Base Change Fundamental Lemma and $q$-analogues of the Kostant partition functions. As an application we prove a conjecture of Miaofen Chen and Xinwen Zhu, relating the set of irreducible components of an affine Deligne-Lusztig variety modulo the action of the $σ$-centralizer group to the Mirkovic-Vilonen basis of a certain weight space of a representation of the Langlands dual group.
We prove that for every reductive group G with a maximal torus T and the Weyl group W there is a natural normalization map chi from T^N/W to an irreducible component of the G-character variety of Z^N. We prove that chi is an isomorphism for all classical groups. Additionally, we prove that even though there are no irreducible representations in the above mentioned irreducible component of the character variety for non-abelian G, the tangent spaces to it coincide with H^1(Z^N, Ad rho). Consequently, this irreducible component has the "Goldman" symplectic form for N=2, for which the combinatoria…
It is known that the set of irreducible components of nilpotent varieties provides a geometric realization of the crystal basis for quantum groups. For each reduced expression of a Weyl group element, Geiß, Leclerc and Schröer has recently given a parametrization of irreducible components of nilpotent varieties in studying cluster algebras. In this paper we show that their parametrization coincides with Lusztig's parametrization of the canonical basis.
It is known that the variety parametrizing pairs of commuting nilpotent matrices is irreducible and that this provides a proof of the irreducibility of the punctual Hilbert scheme in the plane. We extend this link to the nilpotent commuting variety of parabolic subalgebras of $M\_n(\K)$ and to the punctual nested Hilbert scheme. By this method, we obtain a lower bound on the dimension of these moduli spaces. We characterize the numerical conditions under which they are irreducible. In some reducible cases, we describe the irreducible components and their dimension.
The quantum plane is the non-commutative polynomial algebra in variables $x$ and $y$ with $xy=qyx$. In this paper, we study the module variety of $n$-dimensional modules over the quantum plane, and provide an explicit description of its irreducible components and their dimensions. We also describe the irreducible components and their dimensions of the GIT quotient of the module variety with respect to the conjugation action of ${\rm GL}_n$.
In this paper we introduce a certain class of families of Hessenberg varieties arising from Springer theory for symmetric spaces. We study the geometry of those Hessenberg varieties and investigate their monodromy representations in detail using the geometry of complete intersections of quadrics. We obtain decompositions of these monodromy representations into irreducibles and compute the Fourier transforms of the IC complexes associated to these irreducible representations. The results of the paper refine (part of) the Springer correspondece for the split symmetric pair (SL(N),SO(N)) in [CVX2…
We prove that the weight multiplicities of the integrable irreducible highest weight module over the Kac-Moody algebra associated to a quiver are equal to the root multiplicities of the Kac-Moody algebra associated to some enlarged quiver. To do this, we use the Kac conjecture for indivisible roots and a relation between the Poincare polynomials of quiver varieties and the Kac polynomials, counting the number of absolutely irreducible representations of the quiver over finite fields. As a corollary of this relation, we get an explicit formula for the Poincare polynomials of quiver varieties, w…
For a given irreducible projective variety $X$, the closure of the set of all hyperplanes containing tangents to $X$ is the projectively dual variety $X^{\vee}$. We study the singular locus of projectively dual varieties of certain Segre-Plücker embeddings in series of papers. In this work we give a classification of the irreducible components of the singular locus of the dual Grassmannian. Basically, it admits two components: cusp type and node type which are degeneracies of a certain Hessian matrix, and the closure of the set of tangent planes having more than one critical point, respectivel…
Quiver Grassmannians are projective varieties parametrizing subrepresentations of given dimension in a quiver representation. We define a class of quiver Grassmannians generalizing those which realize degenerate flag varieties. We show that each irreducible component of the quiver Grassmannians in question is isomorphic to a Schubert variety. We give an explicit description of the set of irreducible components, identify all the Schubert varieties arising, and compute the Poincaré polynomials of these quiver Grassmannians.
We construct (cohomological) correspondences between mod $p$ fibers of different Shimura varieties and describe the fibers of these correspondences by studying irreducible components of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. In particular, in the case of correspondences from a Shimura set to a Shimura variety, we obtain a description of the basic Newton stratum of the latter, and show that the irreducible components of the basic Newton stratum generate all the Tate classes in the middle cohomology of the Shimura variety, under a certain genericity condition. Along the way, we also determine the set…
We use the Springer correspondence to give a partial characterization of the irreducible representations which appear in the Tymoczko dot-action of the Weyl group on the cohomology ring of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety. In type A, we apply these techniques to prove that all irreducible summands which appear in the pushforward of the constant sheaf on the universal Hessenberg family have full support. We also observe that the recent results of Brosnan and Chow, which apply the local invariant cycle theorem to the family of regular Hessenberg varieties in type A, extend to arbitrary Li…
Let X=G/B be a complete flag variety, and L' and L" two line bundles on X. Consider the cup product map H^{d'}(X,L') x H^{d"}(X, L") --> H^{d}(X,L), where L=L' x L" and d=d'+d". We answer two natural questions about the map above: When is it a nonzero map of irreducible G-representations? Conversely, given generic irreducible representations V' and V" of G, which irreducible components of V' x V" may appear in the right hand side of the map above? We also give bounds on the multiplicities appearing in a tensor product, and relate these considerations to the boundary of the Littlewood-Richardso…
We study the anti-commuting variety which consists of pairs of anti-commuting $n\times n$ matrices. We provide an explicit description of its irreducible components and their dimensions. The GIT quotient of the anti-commuting variety with respect to the conjugation action of $GL_n$ is shown to be of pure dimension $n$. We also show the semi-nilpotent anti-commuting variety (in which one matrix is required to be nilpotent) is of pure dimension $n^2$ and describe its irreducible components.
Let us consider the group $G = < x,y \mid x^m = y^n>$ with $m$ and $n$ nonzero integers. In this paper, we study the variety of epresentations $R(G)$ and the character variety $X(G)$ in $SL(2,\C)$ of the group $G$,obtaining by elementary methods an explicit primary decomposition of the ideal corresponding to $X(G)$ in the coordinates $X=t_x$, $Y=t_y$ and $Z=t_{xy}$. As an easy consequence, a formula for computing the number of irreducible components of $X(G)$ as a function of $m$ and $n$ is given. We provide a combinatorial description of $X(G)$ and we prove that in most cases it is possible t…
We prove that certain quiver varieties are irreducible and therefore are isomorphic to Hilbert schemes of points of the total spaces of the bundles $\mathcal O_{\mathbb P^1}(-n)$ for $n \ge 1$.
In the first part of the paper we defined and studied a binary operation on the set of irreducible components of Lusztig's nilpotent varieties of a quiver. For type $A$ we conjecture, following Geiss and Schröer, that this operation is compatible with taking the socle of parabolic induction of representations of general linear groups over a local non-archimedean field, at least when one of the irreducible components is rigid. We verify this conjecture in special cases.
We study connections between the topology of generic character varieties of fundamental groups of punctured Riemann surfaces, Macdonald polynomials, quiver representations, Hilbert schemes on surfaces, modular forms and multiplicities in tensor products of irreducible characters of finite general linear groups.
We consider the PBW filtrations over the integers of the irreducible highest weight modules in type A and C. We show that the associated graded modules can be realized as Demazure modules for group schemes of the same type and doubled rank. We deduce that the corresponding degenerate flag varieties are isomorphic to Schubert varieties in any characteristic.
We continue, generalize and expand our study of linear degenerations of flag varieties from [G. Cerulli Irelli, X. Fang, E. Feigin, G. Fourier, M. Reineke, Math. Z. 287 (2017), no. 1-2, 615-654]. We realize partial flag varieties as quiver Grassmannians for equi-oriented type A quivers and construct linear degenerations by varying the corresponding quiver representation. We prove that there exists the deepest flat degeneration and the deepest flat irreducible degeneration: the former is the partial analogue of the mf-degenerate flag variety and the latter coincides with the partial PBW-degener…
We prove a decomposition theorem for irreducible components of Grassmannians of submodules, as well as for other schemes arising from representation theory, thus generalising the result of Crawley-Boevey and Schroer for module varieties. The method is based on jet space calculations, using that the formation of direct sums induces a separable morphism of schemes.
We relate two apparently different bases in the representations of affine Lie algebras of type A: one arising from statistical mechanics, the other from gauge theory. We show that the two are governed by the same combinatorics and therefore can be viewed as identical. In particular, we are able to give an alternative and much simpler geometric proof of a result of E. Date, M. Jimbo, A. Kuniba, T. Miwa and M. Okado on the construction of bases of affine Lie algebra representations. At the same time, we give a simple parametrization of the irreducible components of Nakajima quiver varieties asso…
We study the behavior of representation varieties of quivers with relations under the operation of node splitting. We show how splitting a node gives a correspondence between certain closed subvarieties of representation varieties for different algebras, which preserves properties like normality or having rational singularities. Furthermore, we describe how the defining equations of such closed subvarieties change under the correspondence. By working in the "relative setting" (splitting one node at a time), we demonstrate that there are many non-hereditary algebras whose irreducible components…
We describe the centralizer of irreducible representations from a finitely generated group $Γ$ to $PSL(p,\mathbb{C})$ where $p$ is a prime number. This leads to a description of the singular locus (the set of conjugacy classes of representations whose centralizer strictly contains the center of the ambient group) of the irreducible part of the character variety $χ^i(Γ,PSL(p,\mathbb{C}))$. When $Γ$ is a free group of rank $l\geq 2$ or the fundamental group of a closed Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 2$, we give a complete description of this locus and prove that this locus is exactly the set of…
Given partitions $α$, $β$, $γ$, the short exact sequences $0\to N_α\to N_β\to N_γ\to 0$ of nilpotent linear operators of Jordan types $α$, $β$, $γ$, respectively, define a constructible subset $\mathbb V_{α,γ}^β$ of an affine variety. Geometrically, the varieties $\mathbb V_{α,γ}^β$ are of particular interest as they occur naturally and since they typically consist of several irreducible components. In fact, each Littlewood-Richardson (LR-) tableau $Γ$ of shape $(α,β,γ)$ contributes one irreducible component $\overline{\mathbb V}_Γ$. We consider the partial order $Γ\leq_{\sf bound}^*\widetilde…
Let $\SF^a_λ$ be the degenerate symplectic flag variety. These are projective singular irreducible $\bG_a^M$ degenerations of the classical flag varieties for symplectic group $Sp_{2n}$. We give an explicit construction for the varieties $\SF^a_λ$ and construct their desingularizations, similar to the Bott-Samelson resolutions in the classical case. We prove that $\SF^a_\la$ are normal locally complete intersections with terminal and rational singularities. We also show that these varieties are Frobenius split. Using the above mentioned results, we prove an analogue of the Borel-Weil-Bott theo…
Let $L$ be a Levi subgroup of $GL_N$ which acts by left multiplication on a Schubert variety $X(w)$ in the Grassmannian $G_{d,N}$. We say that $X(w)$ is a spherical Schubert variety if $X(w)$ is a spherical variety for the action of $L$. In earlier work we provide a combinatorial description of the decomposition of the homogeneous coordinate ring of $X(w)$ into irreducible $L$-modules for the induced action of $L$. In this work we classify those decompositions into irreducible $L$-modules that are multiplicity-free. This is then applied towards giving a complete classification of the spherical…
For a smooth irreducible affine algebraic variety we study a class of gauge modules admitting compatible actions of both the algebra $A$ of functions and the Lie algebra $\mathcal{V}$ of vector fields on the variety. We prove that a gauge module corresponding to a simple $\mathfrak{gl}_N$-module is irreducible as a module over the Lie algebra of vector fields unless it appears in the de Rham complex.
It is a remarkable theorem by Maffei--Nakajima that the Slodowy variety, which is a subvariety of the resolution of the nilpotent cone, can be realized as a Nakajima quiver variety of type A. However, the isomorphism is rather implicit as it takes to solve a system of equations in which the variables are linear maps. In this paper, we construct solutions to this system under certain assumptions. This establishes an explicit and efficient way to compute the image of a complete flag contained in the Slodowy variety under the Maffei--Nakajima isomorphism and describe these flags in terms of quive…
Let g be a simple simply laced Lie algebra. In this paper two families of varieties associated to the Dynkin graph of g are described: ``tensor product'' and ``multiplicity'' varieties. These varieties are closely related to Nakajima's quiver varieties and should play an important role in the geometric constructions of tensor products and intertwining operators. In particular it is shown that the set of irreducible components of a tensor product variety can be equipped with a structure of g-crystal isomorphic to the crystal of the canonical basis of the tensor product of several simple finite …
For any truncated path algebra $Λ$ of a quiver, we classify, by way of representation-theoretic invariants, the irreducible components of the parametrizing varieties $\mathbf{Rep}_{\mathbf{d}}(Λ)$ of the $Λ$-modules with fixed dimension vector $\mathbf{d}$. In this situation, the components of $\mathbf{Rep}_{\mathbf{d}}(Λ)$ are always among the closures $\overline{\mathbf{Rep}\,\mathbb{S}}$, where $\mathbb{S}$ traces the semisimple sequences with dimension vector $\mathbf{d}$, and hence the key to the classification problem lies in a characterization of these closures. Our first result concern…
We study varieties of complexes of projective modules with fixed ranks, and relate these varieties to the varieties of their homologies. We show that for an algebra of global dimension at most two, these two varieties are related by a pair of morphisms which are smooth with irreducible fibres.
In this paper, we study affine Deligne--Lusztig varieties $X_w(b)$ when the finite part of the element $w$ in the Iwahori--Weyl group is a partial $σ$-Coxeter element. We show that such $w$ is a cordial element and $X_w(b) \neq \emptyset$ if and only if $b$ satisfies a certain Hodge--Newton indecomposability condition. The main result of this paper is that for such $w$ and $b$, $X_w(b)$ has a simple geometric structure: the $σ$-centralizer of $b$ acts transitively on the set of irreducible components of $X_w(b)$; and each irreducible component is an iterated fibration over a classical Deligne-…
Let $Λ$ be a local truncated path algebra over an algebraically closed field $K$, i.e., $Λ$ is a quotient of a path algebra $KQ$ by the paths of length $L+1$, where $Q$ is the quiver with a single vertex and a finite number of loops and $L$ is a positive integer. For any $d>0$, we determine the irreducible components of the varieties that parametrize the $d$-dimensional representations of $Λ$, namely, the components of the classical affine variety ${\rm\bf{Rep}}_{d}(Λ)$ and -- equivalently -- those of the projective parametrizing variety ${\rm GRASS}_d(Λ)$. Our method is to corner the componen…
We compute the number of finite dimensional irreducible modules for the algebras quantizing Nakajima quiver varieties. We get a lower bound for all quivers and vectors of framing and provide an exact count in the case when the quiver is of finite type or is of affine type and the framing is the coordinate vector at the extending vertex. The latter case precisely covers Etingof's conjecture on the number of finite dimensional irreducible representations for Symplectic reflection algebras associated to wreath-product groups. We use several different techniques, the two principal ones are categor…
In a previous paper it was shown that a certain family of varieties suggested by Lusztig, is not enough to construct all irreducible complex representations of reductive groups over finite rings coming from the ring of integers in a local field, modulo a power of the maximal ideal. In this paper we define a generalisation of Lusztig's varieties, corresponding to an extension of the maximal unramified extension of the local field. We show in a particular case that all irreducible representations appear in the cohomology of some extended variety. We conclude with a discussion about reformulation…
We reprove the results of Jordan [18] and Siebert [31] and show that the Lie algebra of polynomial vector fields on an irreducible affine variety X is simple if and only if X is a smooth variety. Given proof is self-contained and does not depend on papers mentioned above. Besides, the structure of the module of polynomial functions on an irreducible smooth affine variety over the Lie algebra of vector fields is studied. Examples of Lie algebras of polynomial vector fields on an N-dimensional sphere, non-singular hyperelliptic curves and linear algebraic groups are considered.
Let $ π$ be an irreducible Harish-Chandra $ (\mathfrak{g}, K) $-module, and denote its associated variety by $ AV(π) $. If $ AV(π) $ is reducible, then each irreducible component must contain codimension one boundary component. Thus we are interested in the codimension one adjacency of nilpotent orbits for a symmetric pair $ (G, K) $. We define the notion of orbit graph and associated graph for $ π$, and study its structure for classical symmetric pairs; number of vertices, edges, connected components, etc. As a result, we prove that the orbit graph is connecetd for even nilpotent orbits. Fina…
