In last few years, the volume of the data has grown manyfold. The data storages have been inundated by various disparate potential data outlets, leading by social media such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. The existing data models are largely unable to illuminate the full potential of Big Data; the information that may serve as the key solution to several complex problems is left unexplored. The existing computation capacity falls short for the increasingly expanded storage capacity. The fast-paced volume expansion of the unorganized data entails a complete paradigm shift in new age data computation and witnesses the evolution of new capable data engineering techniques such as capture, curation, visualization, analyses, etc. In this paper, we provide the first level classification for modern Big Data models. Some of the leading representatives of each classification that claim to best process the Big Data in reliable and efficient way are also discussed. Also, the classification is further strengthened by the intra-class and inter-class comparisons and discussions of the undertaken Big Data models.

Typically, fundamental design decisions involved in big data systems design include choosing appropriate storage and computing infrastructures. In this age of heterogeneous systems that integrate different technologies for development of an optimized solution to a specific real world problem, big data systems are not an exception to any such rule. As far as the storage aspect of any big data system is concerned, the primary facet in this regard is a…
The demanding requirements of the new Big Data intensive era raised the need for flexible storage systems capable of handling huge volumes of unstructured data and of tackling the challenges that traditional databases were facing. NoSQL Databases, in their heterogeneity, are a powerful and diverse set of databases tailored to specific industrial and business needs. However, the lack of theoretical background creates a lack of consensus even among experts about many NoSQL concepts, leading to ambiguity and confusion. In this paper, we present a survey of NoSQL databases and their classification…
This paper explores methodologies, advantages and challenges related to the use of the Information Centric Network technology for developing NoSQL distributed databases, which are expected to play a central role in the forthcoming IoT and BigData era. ICN services make possible to simplify the development of the database software, improve performance, and provide data-level access control. We use our findings for devising a NoSQL spatio-temporal database, named OpenGeoBase, and evaluate its performance with a real data set related to Intelligent Transport System applications.
Google BigTable's scale-out design for distributed key-value storage inspired a generation of NoSQL databases. Recently the NewSQL paradigm emerged in response to analytic workloads that demand distributed computation local to data storage. Many such analytics take the form of graph algorithms, a trend that motivated the GraphBLAS initiative to standardize a set of matrix math kernels for building graph algorithms. In this article we show how it is possible to implement the GraphBLAS kernels in a BigTable database by presenting the design of Graphulo, a library for executing graph algorithms i…
The digital transformation of companies has led to the evolution of databases towards Big Data. Our work is part of this context and concerns more particularly the mechanisms to extract datasets stored in a Data Lake and to store the data in a Data Warehouse. The latter will allow, in a second time, decisional analysis. In this paper, we present the extraction mechanism limited to relational databases. To automate this process, we used the Model Driven Architecture (MDA), which offers a formalized environment for schema transformation. From the physical schemas describing a Data Lake, we propo…
NoSQL databases have become an important component of many big data and real-time web applications. Their distributed nature and scalability make them an ideal data storage repository for a variety of use cases. While NoSQL databases are delivered with a default ''off-the-shelf'' configuration, they offer configuration settings to adjust a database's behavior and performance to a specific use case and environment. The abundance and oftentimes imperceptible inter-dependencies of configuration settings make it difficult to optimize and performance-tune a NoSQL system. There is no one-size-fits-a…
Context: The efficient processing of Big Data is a challenging task for SQL and NoSQL Databases, where competent software architecture plays a vital role. The SQL Databases are designed for structuring data and supporting vertical scalability. In contrast, horizontal scalability is backed by NoSQL Databases and can process sizeable unstructured Data efficiently. One can choose the right paradigm according to the organisation's needs; however, making the correct choice can often be challenging. The SQL and NoSQL Databases follow different architectures. Also, the mixed model is followed by each…
In recent years, the need to use NoSQL systems to store and exploit big data has been steadily increasing. Most of these systems are characterized by the property "schema less" which means absence of the data model when creating a database. This property brings an undeniable flexibility by allowing the evolution of the model during the exploitation of the base. However, the expression of queries requires a precise knowledge of this model. In this paper, we propose an incremental process to extract the model while operating the document-oriented NoSQL database. To do this, we use the Model Driv…

Researchers are required to detect coronaviruses through artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing, and to gain a complete understanding of the disease. COVID-19 takes place in different countries in the world, with which only big data application and the work of NOSQL databases are suitable. There is a great number of platforms used for processing NOSQL Databases mod…
During the last few years, the explosion of Big Data has prompted cloud infrastructures to provide cloud-based database services as cost effective, efficient and scalable solutions to store and process large volume of data. Hence, NoSQL databases became more and more popular because of their inherent features of better performance and high scalability compared to other relational databases. However, with this deployment architecture where the information is stored in a public cloud, protection against the sensitive data is still being a major concern. Since the data owner does not have the ful…

With the considerable development of customer-to-customer (C2C) e-commerce in the recent years, there is a big demand for an effective recommendation system that suggests suitable websites for users to sell their items with some specified needs. Nonetheless, e-commerce recommendation systems are mostly designed for business-to-customer (B2C) websites, where the systems offer the consumers the products that they might like to buy. Almost none of the related research works focus on choosing selling sites for target items. In this paper, we introduce an approach that recommends the selling websit…

In the current context of Big Data, a multitude of new NoSQL solutions for storing, managing, and extracting information and patterns from semi-structured data have been proposed and implemented. These solutions were developed to relieve the issue of rigid data structures present in relational databases, by introducing semi-structured and flexible schema design. As current data generated by different sources and devices, especially from IoT sensors and actuators, use either XML or JSON format, depending on the application, database technologies that store and query semi-structured data in XML …
The Log-Structured Merge-Tree (LSM-tree) has been widely adopted for use in modern NoSQL systems for its superior write performance. Despite the popularity of LSM-trees, they have been criticized for suffering from write stalls and large performance variances due to the inherent mismatch between their fast in-memory writes and slow background I/O operations. In this paper, we use a simple yet effective two-phase experimental approach to evaluate write stalls for various LSM-tree designs. We further explore the design choices of LSM merge schedulers to minimize write stalls given an I/O bandwid…
Graph data management (also called NoSQL) has revealed beneficial characteristics in terms of flexibility and scalability by differently balancing between query expressivity and schema flexibility. This peculiar advantage has resulted into an unforeseen race of developing new task-specific graph systems, query languages and data models, such as property graphs, key-value, wide column, resource description framework (RDF), etc. Present-day graph query languages are focused towards flexible graph pattern matching (aka sub-graph matching), whereas graph computing frameworks aim towards providing …
Log-Structured Merge-trees (LSM-trees) have been widely used in modern NoSQL systems. Due to their out-of-place update design, LSM-trees have introduced memory walls among the memory components of multiple LSM-trees and between the write memory and the buffer cache. Optimal memory allocation among these regions is non-trivial because it is highly workload-dependent. Existing LSM-tree implementations instead adopt static memory allocation schemes due to their simplicity and robustness, sacrificing performance. In this paper, we attempt to break down these memory walls in LSM-based storage syste…
The amount of data generated and stored in cloud systems has been increasing exponentially. The examples of data include user generated data, machine generated data as well as data crawled from the Internet. There have been several frameworks with proven efficiency to store and process the petabyte scale data such as Apache Hadoop, HDFS and several NoSQL frameworks. These systems have been widely used in industry and thus are subject to several research. The proposed data processing techniques should be compatible with the above frameworks in order to be practical. One of the key data operatio…
Sensors are present in various forms all around the world such as mobile phones, surveillance cameras, smart televisions, intelligent refrigerators and blood pressure monitors. Usually, most of the sensors are a part of some other system with similar sensors that compose a network. One of such networks is composed of millions of sensors connect to the Internet which is called Internet of things (IoT). With the advances in wireless communication technologies, multimedia sensors and their networks are expected to be major components in IoT. Many studies have already been done on wireless multime…
Nowadays, query optimization has been highly concerned in big data management, especially in NoSQL databases. Approximate queries boost query performance by loss of accuracy, for example, sampling approaches trade off query completeness for efficiency. Different from them, we propose an uncertainty of query completeness, called Probability of query Completeness (PC for short). PC refers to the possibility that query results contain all satisfied records. For example PC=0.95, it guarantees that there are no more than 5 incomplete queries among 100 ones, but not guarantees how incomplete they ar…
Today's high-performance computing (HPC) systems are heavily instrumented, generating logs containing information about abnormal events, such as critical conditions, faults, errors and failures, system resource utilization, and about the resource usage of user applications. These logs, once fully analyzed and correlated, can produce detailed information about the system health, root causes of failures, and analyze an application's interactions with the system, providing valuable insights to domain scientists and system administrators. However, processing HPC logs requires a deep understanding …
This paper presents a systematic review of common analytical data architectures based on DAMA-DMBOK and ArchiMate. The paper is work in progress and provides a first view on Gartner's Logical Data Warehouse paradigm, Data Fabric and Dehghani's Data Mesh proposal as well as their interdependencies. It furthermore sketches the way forward how this work can be extended by covering more architecture paradigms (incl. classic Data Warehouse, Data Vault, Data Lake, Lambda and Kappa architectures) and introducing a template with among others "context", "problem" and "solution" descriptions, leading ul…
Analyzing the increasingly large volumes of data that are available today, possibly including the application of custom machine learning models, requires the utilization of distributed frameworks. This can result in serious productivity issues for "normal" data scientists. This paper introduces AFrame, a new scalable data analysis package powered by a Big Data management system that extends the data scientists' familiar DataFrame operations to efficiently operate on managed data at scale. AFrame is implemented as a layer on top of Apache AsterixDB, transparently scaling out the execution of Da…
Big data analytics applications drive the convergence of data management and machine learning. But there is no conceptual language available that is spoken in both worlds. The main contribution of the paper is a method to translate Bayesian networks, a main conceptual language for probabilistic graphical models, into usable entity relationship models. The transformed representation of a Bayesian network leaves out mathematical details about probabilistic relationships but unfolds all information relevant for data management tasks. As a real world example, we present the TopicExplorer system th…

Data preprocessing techniques are devoted to correct or alleviate errors in data. Discretization and feature selection are two of the most extended data preprocessing techniques. Although we can find many proposals for static Big Data preprocessing, there is little research devoted to the continuous Big Data problem. Apache Flink is a recent and novel Big Data framework, following the MapReduce paradigm, focused on distributed stream and batch data processing. In this paper we propose a data stream library for Big Data preprocessing, named DPASF, under Apache Flink. We have implemented six of …
