We have conducted a high signal-to-noise spectroscopic survey of 670 nearby early-type stars, to map Diffuse Interstellar Band (DIB) absorption in and around the Local Bubble. The project started with a Southern hemisphere survey conducted at the European Southern Observatory's New Technology Telescope and has since been extended to an all-sky survey using the Isaac Newton Telescope. In this first paper in the series, we introduce the overall project and present the results from the Southern hemisphere survey. We make available a catalogue of equivalent-width measurements of the DIBs at 5780, 5797, 5850, 6196, 6203, 6270, 6283 \& 6614 Å, the interstellar Na\,{\sc i} D lines at 5890 \& 5896 Å, and the stellar He\,{\sc i} line at 5876 Å. We find that the 5780 Å DIB is relatively strong throughout, as compared to the 5797 Å DIB, but especially within the Local Bubble and at the interface with more neutral medium. The 6203 Å DIB shows a similar behaviour, but with respect to the 6196 Å DIB. Some nearby stars show surprisingly strong DIBs whereas some distant stars show very weak DIBs, indicating small-scale structure within as well as outside the Local Bubble. The sight-lines with non-detections trace the extent of the Local Bubble especially clearly, and show it opening out into the Halo. The Local Bubble has a wall which is in contact with hot gas and/or a harsh interstellar radiation field. That wall is perforated though, causing leakage of radiation and possibly hot gas. On the other hand, compact self-shielded cloudlets are present much closer to the Sun, probably within the Local Bubble itself. As for the carriers of the DIBs, our observations confirm the notion that these are large molecules, whose differences in behaviour are mainly governed by their differing resilience and/or electrical charge, with more subtle differences possibly related to varying excitation.
We present a new accurate sample of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) in the southern hemisphere from the Six-degree Field Galaxy Survey (6dFGS). Based on the optical spectral features, 167 sources were classified as NLS1s. We derived flux-calibrated spectra in the sample for the first time. Strong luminosity correlations between the continuum and the emission lines were found. We estimated their central black hole masses and Eddington ratios, which are lying in a typical range of NLS1s. In the sample, 23 NLS1s were detected at radio frequencies and 12 of them are radio-loud. We publish t…
We present a new accurate catalog of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) in the southern hemisphere from the Six-degree Field Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) final data release, which is currently the most extensive spectroscopic survey available in the southern sky whose database has not yet been systematically explored. We classified 167 sources as NLS1s based on their optical spectral properties. We derived flux-calibrated spectra for the first time that the 6dFGS indeed does not provide. By analyzing these spectra, we obtained strong correlations between the monochromatic luminosity at 5100 A and…
We present a new database of 5780.5 and 6283.8 Å DIB measurements and also study their correlation with the reddening. The database is based on high-resolution, high-quality spectra of early-type nearby stars located in the southern hemisphere at an average distance of 300 pc. Equivalent widths of the two DIBs were determined by means of a realistic continuum fitting and synthetic atmospheric transmissions. For all stars that possess a precise measurement of their color excess, we compare the DIBs and the extinction. We find average linear relationships of the DIBS and the color excess that ag…
We present a new high signal to noise ratio spectroscopic survey of the Northern hemisphere to probe the Local Bubble and its surroundings using the $λ5780$ Å and $λ5797$ Å Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs). We observed 432 sightlines to a distance of 200 pc over a duration of 3 years. In this study, we establish the $λ5780$ and $λ5797$ correlations with Na I, Ca II and E(B-V), for both inside and outside the Local Bubble. The correlations show that among all neutral and ionized atoms, the correlation between Ca II and $\lambda5780$ is stronger than its correlation with $\lambda5797$, suggesti…
We present a new high signal-to-noise (S/N) observations of the Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs) in the Local Bubble and its surroundings. We observed 432 sightlines and obtain the equivalent widths of $λ$5780 and $λ$5797 Å DIBs up to distance of $\sim$ 200 pc. All observations have been carried out by using Intermediate Dispersion Spectrograph (IDS) on 2.5 m Isaac Newton Telescope, during three years, to reach a minimum S/N ratio of $\sim$ 2000. All $λ$5780 and $λ$5797 absorptions are presented in this paper and the observed values of interstellar parameter; $λ$5780, $λ$5797, Na I D lines in…

The Fermi Bubbles are two giant gamma-ray emitting lobes extending 55$^{\circ}$ above and below the Galactic Center. While the Northern Bubble has been extensively studied in ultraviolet (UV) absorption, little is known about the gas kinematics of the southern Bubble. We use UV absorption-line spectra from the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope to probe the southern Fermi Bubble using a sample of 17 background AGN projected behind or near the Bubble. We measure the incidence of high-velocity clouds (HVC), finding that four out of six sightlines passing through the …
The Magellanic Clouds were known before Magellan's voyage exactly 500 years ago, and were not given that name by Magellan himself or his chronicler Antonio Pigafetta. They were, of course, already known by local populations in South America, such as the Mapuche and Tupi-Guaranis. The Portuguese called them Clouds of the Cape, and scientific circles had long used the name of Nubecula Minor and Major. We trace how and when the name Magellanic Clouds came into common usage by following the history of exploration of the southern hemisphere and the southern sky by European explorers. While the name…
We present a near-infrared spectroscopic survey of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies in the southern hemisphere (using the SOFI instrument on the ESO-NTT telescope), sampled from optical surveys. We examine the kinematics of the broad-line region, probed by the emission line width of hydrogen (Pa$α$ and H$β$). We observed 57 objects, of which we could firmly measure Pa$α$ in 49 cases. We find that a single Lorentzian fit (preferred on theoretical grounds) is preferred over multi-component Gaussian fits to the line profiles; a lack of narrow-line region emission, overwhelmed by the pole-on view of…
We present the first public data release of the VISTA EXtension to Auxiliary Surveys (VEXAS), comprising of 9 cross-matched multi-wavelength photometric catalogs where each object has a match in at least two surveys. We aim at a spatial coverage as uniform as possible in the multi-wavelength sky, with the purpose of providing the astronomical community with reference magnitudes and colours for various scientific uses, including: object classification (e.g. quasars, galaxies, and stars; high-z galaxies, white dwarfs, etc.); photometric redshifts of large galaxy samples; searches of exotic objec…
Recent observations using several different telescopes and sky surveys showed patterns of asymmetry in the distribution of galaxies by their spin directions as observed from Earth. These studies were done with data imaged from the Northern hemisphere, showing excellent agreement between different telescopes and different analysis methods. Here, data from the DESI Legacy Survey was used. The initial dataset contains $\sim2.2\cdot10^7$ galaxy images, reduced to $\sim8.1\cdot10^5$ galaxies annotated by their spin direction using a symmetric algorithm. That makes it not just the first analysis of …
The study of absorptions along the lines of sight to bright high-$z$ QSOs is an invaluable cosmological tool that provides a wealth of information on the inter-/circum-galactic medium, Dark Matter, primordial elements, reionization, fundamental constants, and General Relativity. Unfortunately, the number of bright ($i \lesssim$ 18) QSOs at $z \gtrsim 2$ in the Southern hemisphere is much lower than in the North, due to the lack of wide multi-wavelength surveys at declination $δ<$ 0$^\circ$, hampering the effectiveness of observations from southern observatories. In this work we present a new m…
The Southern Coalsack is located in the interior of the Upper Centaurus-Lupus (UCL) super bubble and shows many traits that point to a much more energetic environment than might be expected from a dark, starless molecular cloud. A hot, X-ray emitting, envelope surrounds the cloud, it has a very strong internal magnetic field and its darkest core seems to be on astronomical time scales "just about" to start forming stars. In order to probe the magnetic environment of the cloud and to compare with the optical/near infrared polarimetry-based field estimates for the cloud, we have acquired Faraday…

We present S-PASS/ATCA, the first wide-band radio polarimetry survey of compact sources in the southern sky. We describe how we selected targets for observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) in the 16 cm band (1.3 - 3.1 GHz), our observing and calibration strategy, how we analysed the data, and how we tested the quality of the data. The data are made publicly available. The survey contains on average one source per five square degrees and has an angular resolution at 2.2 GHz of ~ 2'x1'. Sources with |RM|s > 150 rad m-2 are seen towards the Galactic plane and bright Hii reg…
An investigation in radio and infrared wavelengths of two high-mass star forming regions toward the southern Galactic bubble S10 is presented here. The two regions under study are associated with the broken bubble S10 and Extended Green Object, G345.99-0.02, respectively. Radio continuum emission mapped at 610 and 1280 MHz using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, India is detected towards both the regions. These regions are estimated to be ionized by early B to late O type stars. Spitzer GLIMPSE mid-infrared data is used to identify young stellar objects associated with these regions. A Clas…
As part of our continuing study of light variability in proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe), we present the results from a long-term study of nine southern hemisphere objects. We have monitored their light variations over a nine-year interval from 2010-2018. These were supplemented by data from the ASAS-SN and ASAS-3 surveys, leading to combined light curves from 2000 to 2020. Pulsation periods were found in seven of the objects, although the three shortest must be regarded as tentative. The periods range from 24 to 73 days. When compared with the results of previous studies of the light variations…
The structure of the Sagittarius stream in the Southern Galactic hemisphere is analysed with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 8. Parallel to the Sagittarius tidal track, but ~ 10deg away, there is another fainter and more metal-poor stream. We provide evidence that the two streams follow similar distance gradients but have distinct morphological properties and stellar populations. The brighter stream is broader, contains more metal-rich stars and has a richer colour-magnitude diagram with multiple turn-offs and a prominent red clump as compared to the fainter stream. Based on the stru…
Searching for low energy counterparts of gamma-ray sources is one of the major challenges in modern gamma-ray astronomy. In the third Fermi source catalog about 30 % of detected sources are unidentified/unassociated Gamma-ray Sources (UGSs). We recently started an optical spectroscopic follow up campaign to confirm the blazar-like nature of candidates counterparts of UGSs. Here we report the spectra of 61 targets collected with the Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope (SOAR) between 2014 and the 2017. Our sample includes 33 potential counterparts of UGSs, selected on the basis of WISE col…
Context: The Red MSX Source (RMS) survey has identified a large sample of candidate massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) and ultra compact (UC) HII regions from a sample of ~2000 MSX and 2MASS colour selected sources. Aims: To search for H2O masers towards a large sample of young high mass stars and to investigate the statistical correlation of H2O masers with the earliest stages of massive star formation. Methods: We have used the Mopra Radio telescope to make position-switched observations towards ~500 UCHII regions and MYSOs candidates identified from the RMS survey and located between 190…
We report the discovery of a stellar stream in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 1 (Y1A1) data. The discovery was made through simple color-magnitude filters and visual inspection of the Y1A1 data. We refer to this new object as the Phoenix stream, after its resident constellation. After subtraction of the background stellar population we detect a clear signal of a simple stellar population. By fitting the ridge line of the stream in color-magnitude space, we find that a stellar population with age $τ=11.5\pm0.5$ Gyr and $[Fe/H]<-1.6$ located 17.5$\pm$0.9 kpc from the Sun gives an adequate des…
The scope of the project "A PSF-based Approach to TESS High Quality data Of Stellar clusters" (PATHOS) is the extraction and analysis of high-precision light curves of stars in stellar clusters and young associations for the identification of candidate exoplanets and variable stars. The cutting-edge tools used in this project allow us to measure the real flux of stars in dense fields, minimising the effects due to contamination by neighbour sources. We extracted about 200 000 light curves of stars in 645 open clusters located in the southern ecliptic hemisphere and observed by TESS during the …
We present the second public data release (DR) of the VISTA EXtension to Auxiliary Surveys (VEXAS), where we classify objects into stars, galaxies and quasars based on an ensemble of machine learning algorithms. The aim of VEXAS is to build the widest multi-wavelength catalogue, providing reference magnitudes, colours and morphological information for a large number of scientific uses. We apply an ensemble of 32 different machine learning models, based on three different algorithms and on different magnitude sets, training samples and classification problems on the three VEXAS DR1 optical+infr…
We report on a search for low-frequency radio variability in 944 bright (> 4Jy at 154 MHz) unresolved, extragalactic radio sources monitored monthly for several years with the Murchison Widefield Array. In the majority of sources we find very low levels of variability with typical modulation indices < 5%. We detect 15 candidate low frequency variables that show significant long term variability (>2.8 years) with time-averaged modulation indices M = 3.1 - 7.1%. With 7/15 of these variable sources having peaked spectral energy distributions, and only 5.7% of the overall sample having peaked spec…
The eROSITA bubbles are detected via the instrument with the same name. The northern bubble shows noticeable asymmetric features, including distortion to the west and enhancement in the eastern edge, while the southern counterpart is significantly dimmer. Their origins are debated. Here, we performed hydrodynamic simulations showing that asymmetric eROSITA bubbles favor a dynamic, circumgalactic medium wind model, but disfavor other mechanisms such as a non-axisymmetric halo gas or a tilted nuclear outflow. The wind from the east by north direction in Galactic coordinates blows across the nort…
The DESI Legacy Survey is a digital sky survey with a large footprint compared to other Earth-based surveys, covering both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. This paper shows the distribution of the spin directions of spiral galaxies imaged by DESI Legacy Survey. A simple analysis of dividing nearly 1.3$\cdot10^6$ spiral galaxies into two hemispheres shows a higher number of galaxies spinning counterclockwise in the Northern hemisphere, and a higher number of galaxies spinning clockwise in the Southern hemisphere. That distribution is consistent with previous observations, but uses a far l…
We carried out deep and wide-field near- and mid-infrared observations for a sample of 8 bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs). Supplemented with the $Spitzer$ archival data, we have identified and classified 44 to 433 young stellar objects (YSOs) associated with these BRCs. The Class I sources are generally located towards the places with higher extinction and are relatively closer to each other than the Class II sources, confirming that the young protostars are usually found in regions having denser molecular material. On the other hand the comparatively older population, Class II objects, are more ra…
This paper provides a catalogue of stars, quasars, and galaxies for the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey Data Release 2 (S-PLUS DR2) in the Stripe 82 region. We show that a 12-band filter system (5 Sloan-like and 7 narrow bands) allows better performance for object classification than the usual analysis based solely on broad bands (regardless of infrared information). Moreover, we show that our classification is robust against missing values. Using spectroscopically confirmed sources retrieved from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR16 and DR14Q, we train a random forest classifier with …
The Galactic center excess (GCE) remains one of the most intriguing discoveries from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) observations. We revisit the characteristics of the GCE by first producing a new set of high-resolution galactic diffuse gamma-ray emission templates, which are ultimately due to cosmic-ray interactions with the interstellar medium. Using multi-messenger observations we constrain the properties of the galactic diffuse emission. The broad properties of the GCE that we find in this work are qualitatively unchanged despite the introduction of this new set of templates, though …
