In this work, we investigated the nonadiabatic transport properties of the one-dimensional time-dependent superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junction biased by a current source and driven by a high-frequency-ac-gate-potential applied to the normal-metal layer. BCS superconductors are considered and treated with the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. Using Floquet theory, we compute the transmission coefficients and the Wigner-Smith delay times as a function of the incident energy and find that they display resonances when one of the electron or hole Floquet wavevectors coincides with the bound quasiparticle state within the superconducting energy gap. The resonance varies with the phase difference between the two superconductors as a result of the bound quasiparticle level displacement. The supercurrent flowing through the SNS junction is dramatically enhanced by the resonances.
Irradiating a Josephson junction with microwaves can operate not only on the amplitude but also on the phase of the Josephson current. This requires breaking time inversion symmetry, which is achieved by introducing a phase lapse between the microwave components acting on the two† sides of the junction. General symmetry arguments and the solution of a specific single level quantum dot model show that this induces chirality in the Cooper pair dynamics, due to the topology of the Andreev bound state wavefunction. Another essential condition is to break electron-hole symmetry within the junction.…
We analyze theoretically adiabatic quantum pumping through a normal conductor that couples the normal regions of two superconductor/normal metal/superconductor Josephson junctions. By using the phases of the superconducting order parameter in the superconducting contacts as pumping parameters, we demonstrate that a non zero pumped charge can flow through the device. The device exploits the evolution of the superconducting phases due to the ac Josephson effect, and can therefore be operated at very high frequency, resulting in a pumped current as large as a few nanoAmperes. The experimental rel…
We demonstrate that an {\it ac} Josephson current is pumped through the Single Molecular Magnets (SMM) by the spin nutation. The spin nutation is generated by applying a time dependent magnetic field to the SMM. We obtain the flowing charge current through the junction by working in the tunneling limit and employing Green's function technique. At the resonance conditions some discontinuities and divergencies are appeared in the normal and Josephson currents, respectively. Such discontinuities and divergencies reveal themselves when the absorbed/emitted energy, owing to the interaction of the q…
We demonstrate that a Josephson junction with a half-metallic weak link integrated into the superconducting loop enables the pumping of magnetic flux piercing the loop. In such junctions, the ground state phase $ψ$ is determined by the mutual orientation of magnetic moments in two ferromagnets surrounding the half-metal. Thus, the precession of magnetic moment in one of two ferromagnets controlled, e.g., by the microwave radiation, results in the accumulation of the phase $ψ$ and subsequent switching between the states with different vorticities. The proposed flux pumping mechanism does not re…
In this paper, we propose a novel kind of Josephson-Energy Suppression Pump (JESP) controlled by a fully magnetic flux drive. The device presented here is composed of two superconducting loops interrupted at one side by superconducting nanowires which are joined together by a superconducting island. The phase difference developed at the edges of the nanowires by means of the magnetic flux threading the loops can collapse their Cooper condensates, leading to complete suppression of the Josephson energies. This mechanism allows to greatly reduce the leakage current when performing Cooper pair pu…
The flux-flow dynamics in a long Josephson junction is studied both analytically and numerically. A realistic model of the junction is considered by taking into account a nonuniform current distribution, surface losses and self-pumping effects. An approximate analytical solution of the modified sine-Gordon equation is derived in the form of a unidirectional dense fluxon train accompanied by two oppositely directed plasma waves. Next, some macroscopic time-averaged quantities are calculated making possible to evaluate the current-voltage characteristic of the junction. The results obtained by t…
We have developed a quantitative theory of Cooper pair pumping in gated one-dimensional arrays of Josephson junctions. The pumping accuracy is limited by quantum tunneling of Cooper pairs out of the propagating potential well and by direct supercurrent flow through the array. Both corrections decrease exponentially with the number N of junctions in the array, but give a serious limitation of accuracy for any practical array. The supercurrent at resonant gate voltages decreases with N only as sin(v/N)/N, where v is the Josephson phase difference across the array.
We propose a mechanism of quantum pumping mediated by the spectral flow in a voltage-biased SINIS quantum junction and realized via the sequential closing of the minigaps in the energy spectrum in resonance with the Josephson frequency. We show that the dc current exhibits giant peaks at rational voltages.
A macroscopic fluid pump works according to the law of Newtonian mechanics and transfers a large number of molecules per cycle (of the order of 10^23). By contrast, a nano-scale charge pump can be thought as the ultimate miniaturization of a pump, with its operation being subject to quantum mechanics and with only few electrons or even fractions of electrons transfered per cycle. It generates a direct current in the absence of an applied voltage exploiting the time-dependence of some properties of a nano-scale conductor. The idea of pumping in nanostructures was discussed theoretically a few d…
We demonstrate the possibility to build stable Josephson $π$-junction stripes with exciton-polariton condensates. The stability of the $π$-junction between arbitrary long polariton stripes is achieved at low pumping by balancing the snaking instability with counter-propagating flows towards the junction. Not dissimilar from a dark soliton, the instability becomes relevant at high pumping leading to formation of vortex dipoles. The resulting structures can be stabilised to produce static lattices of Josephson vortices in straight and ring geometries. Our results build towards realization of qua…
We describe in this paper how the nonlinear Josephson inductance is the crucial circuit element for all Josephson qubits. We discuss the three types of qubit circuits, and show how these circuits use this nonlinearity in unique manners. We give a brief derivation of the BCS theory, highlighting the appearance of the macroscopic phase parameter. The Josephson equations are derived using standard first and second order perturbation theory that describe quasiparticle and Cooper-pair tunneling. An exact calculation of the Josephson effect then follows using the quasiparticle bound-state theory, an…
We present a formalism to study adiabatic pumping through a superconductor - normal - superconductor weak link. At zero temperature, the pumped charge is related to the Berry phase accumulated, in a pumping cycle, by the Andreev bound states. We analyze in detail the case when the normal region is short compared to the superconducting coherence length. The pumped charge turns out to be an even function of the superconducting phase difference. Hence, it can be distinguished from the charge transferred due to the standard Josephson effect.
We propose a theoretical protocol for quantum logic gates between two Josephson junction charge-phase qubits through the control of their coupling to a large junction. In the low excitation limit of the large junction when $E_{J}\gg E_{c}$, it behaves effectively as a quantum data-bus mode of a harmonic oscillator. Our protocol is efficient and fast. In addition, it does not require the data-bus to stay adiabatically in its ground state, as such it can be implemented over a wide parameter regime independent of the data-bus quantum state.
The Hamiltonian operator for an unbiased array of Josephson junctions with gate voltages is constructed when only Cooper pair tunnelling and charging effects are taken into account. The supercurrent through the system and the pumped current induced by changing the gate voltages periodically are discussed with an emphasis on the inaccuracies in the Cooper pair pumping. Renormalisation of the Hamiltonian operator is used in order to reliably parametrise the effects due to inhomogeneity in the array and non-ideal gating sequences. The relatively simple model yields an explicit, testable predictio…
We theoretically consider a Josephson junction formed by a ferromagnetic spacer with a strong spin-orbit interaction or a magnetic spin valve, i.e., a bilayer with one static and one free layer. Electron spin transport facilitates a nonlinear dynamical coupling between the magnetic moment and charge current, which consists of normal and superfluid components. By phenomenologically adding reactive and dissipative interactions (guided by structural and Onsager symmetries), we construct magnetic torques and charge pumping, whose microscopic origins are also discussed. A stability analysis of our …
Superconducting circuits incorporating Josephson tunnel junctions are widely used for fundamental research as well as for applications in fields such as quantum information and magnetometry. The quantum coherent nature of Josephson junctions makes them especially suitable for metrology applications. Josephson junctions suffice to form two sides of the quantum metrology triangle, relating frequency to either voltage or current, but not its base, which directly links voltage to current. We propose a five Josephson tunnel junction circuit in which simultaneous pumping of flux and charge results i…
Photoexcitations on a superconductor using ultrafast nir-infrared (NIR) pulses, whose energy is much higher than the superconducting energy gap, are expected to suppress/destroy superconductivity by breaking Cooper pairs and excite quasiparticles from occupied state to unoccupied state far above the Fermi level. This appears to be true only for small pumping fluence. Here we show that the intense NIR pumping has different effect. We perform an intense NIR pump, c-axis terahertz probe measurement on an electron-doped cuprate superconductor Pr$_{0.88}$LaCe$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ with T$_c$=22 K. The me…
We study the evolution of averaged transconductances in three-terminal Josephson junctions when the superconducting leads are led throughout a topological phase transition from an $s$-wave to a $p$-wave (Majorana) phase by an in-plane magnetic field $B_x$. We provide a complete description of this transition as a function of $B_x$ and a magnetic flux $Φ$ threading the junction. For that we use a spinful model within a formalism that allows to treat on equal footing the contribution to the transconductance from both the Andreev subgap levels and the continuum spectrum. We unveil a fractionaliza…
We demonstrate non-adiabatic charge pumping utilizing a sequence of coherent oscillations between a superconducting island and two reservoirs. Our method, based on pulsed quantum state manipulations, allows to speedup charge pumping to a rate which is limited by the coupling between the island and the reservoirs given by the Josephson energy. Our experimental and theoretical studies also demonstrate that relaxation can be employed to reset the pump and avoid accumulation of errors due to non-ideal control pulses.
We construct a semiclassical theory for the transport of topological junctions starting from a microscopic Hamiltonian that comprehensively includes the interplay among the Majorana qubit, the Josephson phase, and the dissipation process. With the path integral approach, we derive a set of semiclassical equations of motion that can be used to calculate the time evolution of the Josephson phase and the Majorana qubit. In the equations we reveal rich dynamical phenomena such as the qubit induced charge pumping, the effective spin-orbit torque, and the Gilbert damping. We demonstrate the influenc…
Intrinsic Josephson-junction stacks realized in high-temperature superconductors provide a very attractive base for developing coherent sources of electromagnetic radiation in the terahertz frequency range. A promising way to synchronize phase oscillations in all the junctions is to excite an internal cavity resonance. We demonstrate that this resonance promotes the formation of an alternating coherent state, in which the system spontaneously splits into two subsystems with different phase-oscillation patterns. There is a static phase shift between the oscillations in the two subsystems which …
The notion of topological (Thouless) pumping in topological phases is traditionally associated with Laughlin's pump argument for the quantization of the Hall conductance in two-dimensional (2D) quantum Hall systems. It relies on magnetic flux variations that thread the system of interest without penetrating its bulk, in the spirit of Aharonov-Bohm effects. Here we explore a different paradigm for topological pumping induced, instead, by magnetic flux variations $δχ$ inserted through the bulk of topological phases. We show that $δχ$ generically controls the analog of a topological pump, accompa…
We discover novel topological pumps in the Josephson effects for superconductors. The phase difference, which is odd under the chiral symmetry defined by the product of time-reversal and particle-hole symmetries, acts as an anomalous adiabatic parameter. These pumping cycles are different from those in the "periodic table", and are characterized by $Z\times Z$ or $Z_2\times Z_2$ strong invariants. We determine the general classifications in class AIII, and those in class DIII with a single anomalous parameter. For the $Z_2\times Z_2$ topological pump in class DIII, one $Z_2$ invariant describe…
We present experimental studies of high quality underdamped 0, pi, and 0-pi ferromagnetic Josephson tunnel junctions of intermediate length L (lambda_J < L < 5 lambda_J, where lambda_J is the Josephson penetration depth). Using microwave spectroscopy, we have investigated the eigenfrequencies of 0, pi, and 0-pi Josephson junctions in the temperature range 1.9K...320mK. Harmonic, subharmonic and superharmonic pumping is observed in experiment, and the experimental data …

The recent growing interest in terahertz (THz) and sub-THz science and technology is due to its many important applications in physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, and medicine. We review the problem of linear and non-linear THz and sub-THz Josephson plasma waves in layered superconductors and their excitations produced by moving Josephson vortices. We start by discussing the coupled sine-Gordon equations for the gauge-invariant phase difference of the order parameter in the junctions, taking into account the effect of breaking the charge neutrality, and deriving the spectrum of Josephson p…
A small superconducting electrode (a single-Cooper-pair box) connected to a reservoir via a Josephson junction constitutes an artificial two-level system, in which two charge states that differ by 2e are coupled by tunneling of Cooper pairs. Despite its macroscopic nature involving a large number of electrons, the two-level system shows coherent superposition of the two charge states, and has been suggested as a candidate for a qubit, i.e. a basic component of a quantum computer. Here we report on time-domain observation of the coherent quantum-state evolution in the two-level system by applyi…
