The classical max-flow min-cut theorem describes transport through certain idealized classical networks. We consider the quantum analog for tensor networks. By associating an integral capacity to each edge and a tensor to each vertex in a flow network, we can also interpret it as a tensor network, and more specifically, as a linear map from the input space to the output space. The quantum max flow is defined to be the maximal rank of this linear map over all choices of tensors. The quantum min cut is defined to be the minimum product of the capacities of edges over all cuts of the tensor network. We show that unlike the classical case, the quantum max-flow=min-cut conjecture is not true in general. Under certain conditions, e.g., when the capacity on each edge is some power of a fixed integer, the quantum max-flow is proved to equal the quantum min-cut. However, concrete examples are also provided where the equality does not hold.
We also found connections of quantum max-flow/min-cut with entropy of entanglement and the quantum satisfiability problem. We speculate that the phenomena revealed may be of interest both in spin systems in condensed matter and in quantum gravity.
Given a graph $G=(V, E)$, a connected sides cut $(U, V\backslash U)$ or $δ(U)$ is the set of edges of E linking all vertices of U to all vertices of $V\backslash U$ such that the induced subgraphs $G[U]$ and $G[V\backslash U]$ are connected. Given a positive weight function $w$ defined on $E$, the maximum connected sides cut problem (MAX CS CUT) is to find a connected sides cut $Ω$ such that $w(Ω)$ is maximum. MAX CS CUT is NP-hard. In this paper, we give a linear time algorithm to solve MAX CS CUT for series parallel graphs. We deduce a linear time algorithm for the minimum cut problem in the…
We prove a strong version of the Max-Flow Min-Cut theorem for countable networks, namely that in every such network there exist a flow and a cut that are "orthogonal" to each other, in the sense that the flow saturates the cut and is zero on the reverse cut. If the network does not contain infinite trails then this flow can be chosen to be mundane, i.e. to be a sum of flows along finite paths. We show that in the presence of infinite trails there may be no orthogonal pair of a cut and a mundane flow. We finally show that for locally finite networks there is an orthogonal pair of a cut and a fl…
In this paper, we characterize all graphs with eigenvectors of the signless Laplacian and adjacency matrices with components equal to $\{- 1, 0, 1\}.$ We extend the graph parameter max $k$-cut to square matrices and prove a general sharp upper bound, which implies upper bounds on the max $k$-cut of a graph using the smallest signless Laplacian eigenvalue, the smallest adjacency eigenvalue, and the largest Laplacian eigenvalue of the graph. In addition, we construct infinite families of extremal graphs for the obtained upper bounds.
In this paper we study the MAX-CUT problem on power law graphs (PLGs) with power law exponent $β$. We prove some new approximability results on that problem. In particular we show that there exist polynomial time approximation schemes (PTAS) for MAX-CUT on PLGs for the power law exponent $β$ in the interval $(0,2)$. For $β>2$ we show that for some $ε>0$, MAX-CUT is NP-hard to approximate within approximation ratio $1+ε$, ruling out the existence of a PTAS in this case. Moreover we give an approximation algorithm with improved constant approximation ratio for the case of $β>2$.
We show that in random $K$-uniform hypergraphs of constant average degree, for even $K \geq 4$, local algorithms defined as factors of i.i.d. can not find nearly maximal cuts, when the average degree is sufficiently large. These algorithms have been used frequently to obtain lower bounds for the max-cut problem on random graphs, but it was not known whether they could be successful in finding nearly maximal cuts. This result follows from the fact that the overlap of any two nearly maximal cuts in such hypergraphs does not take values in a certain non-trivial interval - a phenomenon referred to…
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$ and size $m$, and let $\mathrm{mc}_{k}\left( G\right) $ be the maximum size of a $k$-cut of $G.$ It is shown that \[ \mathrm{mc}_{k}\left( G\right) \leq\frac{k-1}{k}\left( m-\frac{μ_{\min }\left( G\right) n}{2}\right) , \] where $μ_{\min}\left( G\right) $ is the smallest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $G.$ An infinite class of graphs forcing equality in this bound is constructed.
The Ising antiferromagnet is an important statistical physics model with close connections to the {\sc Max Cut} problem. Combining spatial mixing arguments with the method of moments and the interpolation method, we pinpoint the replica symmetry breaking phase transition predicted by physicists. Additionally, we rigorously establish upper bounds on the {\sc Max Cut} of random regular graphs predicted by Zdeborová and Boettcher [Journal of Statistical Mechanics 2010]. As an application we prove that the information-theoretic threshold of the disassortative stochastic block model on random regul…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the Max $κ$-cut on a family of sparse, inhomogeneous random graphs. In the large degree limit, the leading term is a variational problem, involving the ground state of a constrained inhomogeneous Potts spin glass. We derive a Parisi type formula for the free energy of this model, with possible constraints on the proportions, and derive the limiting ground state energy by a suitable zero temperature limit.
We consider several semidefinite programming relaxations for the max-$k$-cut problem, with increasing complexity. The optimal solution of the weakest presented semidefinite programming relaxation has a closed form expression that includes the largest Laplacian eigenvalue of the graph under consideration. This is the first known eigenvalue bound for the max-$k$-cut when $k>2$ that is applicable to any graph. This bound is exploited to derive a new eigenvalue bound on the chromatic number of a graph. For regular graphs, the new bound on the chromatic number is the same as the well-known Hoffman …
We study the max k-cut game on an undirected and unweighted graph in order to find out whether an optimal solution is also a strong equilibrium. While we do fail to show that, by proving an alternate formula for computing the cut value difference for a strong deviation, we show that optimal solutions are 7-stable equilibria. Furthermore, we prove some properties of minimal subsets with respect to a strong deviation, showing that each of their nodes will deviate towards the color of one of their neighbors and that those subsets induce connected subgraphs.
For a graph $G$, let $f(G)$ denote the size of the maximum cut in $G$. The problem of estimating $f(G)$ as a function of the number of vertices and edges of $G$ has a long history and was extensively studied in the last fifty years. In this paper we propose an approach, based on semidefinite programming (SDP), to prove lower bounds on $f(G)$. We use this approach to find large cuts in graphs with few triangles and in $K_r$-free graphs.
We obtain several lower bounds on the $\textsf{Max-Cut}$ of $d$-degenerate $H$-free graphs. Let $f(m,d,H)$ denote the smallest $\textsf{Max-Cut}$ of an $H$-free $d$-degenerate graph on $m$ edges. We show that $f(m,d,K_r)\ge \left(\frac{1}{2} + d^{-1+Ω(r^{-1})}\right)m$, generalizing a recent work of Carlson, Kolla, and Trevisan. We also give bounds on $f(m,d,H)$ when $H$ is a cycle, odd wheel, or a complete bipartite graph with at most 4 vertices on one side. We also show stronger bounds on $f(m,d,K_r)$ assuming a conjecture of Alon, Bollabas, Krivelevich, and Sudakov (2003). We conjecture tha…
