Spin orbit interaction and the resulting Spin Hall effect of light are under recent intensive investigations because of their fundamental nature and potential applications. Here, we report an extraordinary spin specific beam shift of light and demonstrate its tunability in an inhomogeneous anisotropic medium exhibiting spatially varying retardance level. The spin specificity (shift occurs only for one circular polarization mode, keeping the other orthogonal mode unaffected) is shown to arise due to the combined spatial gradients of the geometric phase and the dynamical phase of light. The constituent two orthogonal circular polarization modes of an input linearly polarized light evolve in different trajectories, eventually manifesting as a large and tunable spin separation. The spin specificity of the beam shift and the demonstrated principle of simultaneously tailoring space-varying geometric and dynamical phase of light for achieving its tunability (of both magnitude and direction), may provide an attractive route towards development of spin-optical devices.
Spatially inhomogeneous fields of electromagnetic guided modes exhibit a complex of extraordinary dynamical properties such as the polarization-dependent transverse momentum, helicity-independent transverse spin, spin-associated non-reciprocity and unidirectional propagation, etc. Recently, the remarkable relationship has been established between the spin and propagation features of such fields, expressed through the spin-momentum equations [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. 118 (2021) e2018816118] connecting the wave spin with the curl of momentum. Here, the meaning, limitations and specific forms of th…
We discuss the propagation of an electromagnetic field in an inhomogeneously anisotropic material where the optic axis is rotated in the transverse plane but is invariant along the propagation direction. In such a configuration, the evolution of an electromagnetic wavepacket is governed by the Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PBP), responsible for the appearance of an effective photonic potential. In a recent paper [A. Alberucci et al., "Electromagnetic confinement via spin-orbit interaction in anisotropic dielectrics", ACS Photonics \textbf{3}, 2249 (2016)] we demonstrated that the effective potenti…
We report the observations of unexpected layer-dependent, strong, and anisotropic second harmonic generations (SHGs) in atomically thin ReS2. Appreciable (negligible) SHGs are obtained from even (odd) numbers of ReS2 layers, which is opposite to the layer-dependence of SHGs in group VI transition metal dichalcogenides, such as MoS2 and WS2. The results are analyzed from ReS2's crystal structure, implying second harmonic polarizations generated from the interlayer coupling. Pumped by a telecomband laser, SHG from the bilayer ReS2 is almost one order of magnitude larger than that from the monola…
In this work, we develop a hybrid-order Poincaré sphere to describe the evolution of polarization states of wave propagation in inhomogeneous anisotropic media. We extend the orbital Poincaré sphere and high-order Poincaré sphere to a more general form. Polarization evolution in inhomogeneous anisotropic media with special geometry can be conveniently described by state evolution along the longitude line on the hybrid-order Poincaré sphere. Similar to that in previously proposed Poincaré spheres, the Berry curvature can be regarded as an effective magnetic field with monopole centered at the o…
Anomalous spectral shift of transmission peaks is observed in a Fabry--Pérot cavity filled with a chiral anisotropic medium. The effective refractive index value resides out of the interval between the ordinary and the extraordinary refractive indices. The spectral shift is explained by contribution of a geometric phase. The problem is solved analytically using the approximate Jones matrix method, numerically using the accurate Berreman method and geometrically using the generalized Mauguin--Poincaré rolling cone method. The $o$-mode blue shift is measured for a 4-methoxybenzylidene-4'-$n$-but…
In-plane optical anisotropy plays a critical role in manipulating light in a wide range of planner photonic devices. In this study, the strong anisotropy of multilayer 2D GeAs is leveraged and utilized to validate the technical feasibility of on-chip light management. A 2D GeAs is stamped into an ultra-compact silicon waveguide four-way crossing optimized for operation in the O-optical band. The measured optical transmission spectra indicated a remarkable discrepancy between the in-plane crystal optical axes with an attenuation ratio of ~ 3.5 (at 1330 nm). Additionally, the effect of GeAs crys…
Geometrical and dynamical phase have competing effects as far a scattering of light form inhomogeneous anisotropic optical medium is concerned. If fine-tuned appropriately, these effects can completely cancel each other for a chosen spin component while having an additive effect on the orthogonal components. Here, we show a manifestation of extraordinary spin selective modes in Fourier spectrum of Gaussian beam transmitted through anisotropic disordered medium. We realize the concept using a twisted nematic liquid crystal-based spatial light modulator (SLM) with random gray level distribution …
Potential-based formulation with generalized Lorenz gauge can be used in the quantization of electromagnetic fields in inhomogeneous media. However, one often faces the redundancy of modes when finding eigenmodes from potential-based formulation. In free space, this can be explained by the connection to the well-known Helmholtz decomposition. In this work, we generalize the Helmholtz decomposition to its generalized form, echoing the use of generalized Lorenz gauge in inhomogeneous media. We formulate electromagnetics eigenvalue problems using vector potential formulation which is often used i…
