Black phosphorus is a monoatomic semiconducting layered material that degrades exothermically in the presence of light and ambient contaminants. Its degradation dynamics remain largely unknown. Even before degradation, local-probe studies indicate non-negligible local curvature --through a non-constant height distribution-- due to the unavoidable presence of intrinsic defects. We establish that these intrinsic defects are photo-oxidation sites because they lower the chemisorption barrier of ideal black phosphorus (> 10 eV and out of visible-range light excitations) right into the visible and ultra-violet range (1.6 to 6.8 eV), thus enabling photo-induced oxidation and dissociation of oxygen dimers. A full characterization of the material's shape and of its electronic properties at the early stages of the oxidation process is presented as well. This study thus provides fundamental insights into the degradation dynamics of this novel layered material.
Black phosphorene is not stable at ambient conditions, so atomic defects and oxidation effects are unavoidable in black phosphorus samples in the experiment. The effects of these defects on the performance of the black phosphorus nanoresonators are still unclear. Here, we perform classical molecular dynamics to investigate the effects of the vacancy and oxidation on single-layer black phosphorus nanoresonators at different temperatures. We find that the vacancy causes strong reduction in the quality factor of the nanoresonators, while the oxidation has weaker effect on the nanoresonators. More…
The puckered surface of black phosphorus represents an ideal substrate for an unconventional arrangement of physisorbed species and the resulting specific two-dimensional chemistry of this system. This opens the way to investigate the chemical and physical properties of locally confined areas of black phosphorus without the necessity for further physical downscaling of the material. We have evaporated TCNQ on top of black phosphorus under over-saturation non-equilibrium conditions in vacuum. The evolution of linear density and height of droplets formed through oxidation during exposure to air …

Black Phosphorus (BP) is an excellent material for post graphene era due to its layer dependent band gap, high mobility and high Ion/Ioff. However, its poor stability in ambient poses a great challenge in its practical and long-term usage. Optical visualization of oxidized BP is the key and foremost step for its successful passivation from the ambience. Here, we have done a systematic study of the oxidation of BP and developed a technique to optically identify the oxidation of BP using Liquid Crystal (LC). Interestingly we found that rapid oxidation of thin layers of BP makes them disappear an…
The preferred location of boron and phosphorus in oxidized free-standing Si nanoparticles was investigated using a first-principles density functional approach. The calculated formation energies indicate that P should segregate to the silicon core, whereas B is equally stable in the Si and SiO_2 regions. Our models thus suggest that, in contrast with nanocrystals with H-terminated surfaces, the efficiency of phosphorus incorporation in oxidized Si nanoparticles can be improved by thermal annealing.
Two-dimensional black phosphorus has been configured as field-effect transistors, showing an intrinsic symmetric ambipolar transport characteristic. Here, we demonstrate the strongly modulated ambipolar characteristics of few-layer black phosphorus in oxygen. Pure oxygen exposure can dramatically decrease the electron mobility of black phosphorus without degrading the hole transport. The transport characteristics can be nearly recovered upon annealing in Argon. This reveals that oxygen molecules are physisorbed on black phosphorus. In contrast, oxygen exposure upon light illumination exhibits …
Thin layers of black phosphorus present an ideal combination of a 2D material with a tunable direct bandgap and high carrier mobility. However the material suffers from degradation in ambient conditions due to an oxidation reaction which involves water, oxygen and light. We have measured the spatial profile of the conductivity on flakes of black phosphorus as a function of time using scanning microwave impedance microscopy. A microwave excitation (3 GHz) allows to image a conducting sample even when covered with a dielectric layer. We observe that on bare black phosphorus, the conductivity cha…
Black phosphorus (BP) has attracted significant interest as a monolayer or few-layer material with extraordinary electrical and optoelectronic properties. However, degradation in air and other environments is an unresolved issue that may limit future applications. In particular the role of different ambient species has remained controversial. Here, we report systematic experiments combined with ab-initio calculations that address the effects of oxygen and water in the degradation of BP. Our results show that BP rapidly degrades whenever oxygen is present, but is unaffected by deaerated (i.e., …
We demonstrate the large scale exfoliation of bulk black phosphorus into few-layers black phosphorus. We use wet-jet mill (WJM) as an industrially scalable exfoliation technique. In order to avoid the degradation by oxidation of the exfoliated flakes, the few-layers black phosphorus is protected by functionalisation (with 4-bromobenzene-diazonium tetrafluoroborate) during the exfoliation process. We used the exfoliated and functionalised flakes as fillers in a polymethyl methacrylate matrix to test the mechanical endurance, obtaining an improvement in the Young modulus of 106% compared to the …
We show that black phosphorus has room-temperature charge mobilities on the order of 10$^4$ cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$, which are about one order of magnitude larger than silicon. We also demonstrate strong anisotropic transport in black phosphorus, where the mobilities along the armchair direction are about one order of magnitude larger than zigzag direction. A photocarrier lifetime as long as 100 ps is also determined. These results illustrate that black phosphorus is a promising candidate for future electronic and optoelectronic applications.
Solution dispersions of two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus (BP), often referred to as phosphorene, are achieved by solvent exfoliation. These pristine, electronic-grade BP dispersions are produced with anhydrous, organic solvents in a sealed tip ultrasonication system, which circumvents BP degradation that would otherwise occur via solvated oxygen or water. Among conventional solvents, n-methyl-pyrrolidone (NMP) is found to provide stable, highly concentrated (~0.4 mg/mL) BP dispersions. Atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectrosc…
Atomic structure of single-crystalline black phosphorus was studied by high resolution synchrotron-based photoelectron diffraction (XPD). The results show that the topmost phosphorene layer in the black phosphorus is slightly displaced compared to the bulk structure and presents a small contraction in the direction perpendicular to the surface. Furthermore, the XPD results show the presence of a small buckling among the surface atoms, in agreement with previously reported scanning tunneling microscopy results. The contraction of the surface layer added to the presence of the buckling indicates…
Electronic structures of single crystalline black phosphorus were studied by state-of-art angleresolved photoemission spectroscopy. Through high resolution photon energy dependence measurements, the band dispersions along out-of-plane and in-plane directions are experimentally determined. The electrons were found to be more localized in the ab-plane than that is predicted in calculations. Beside the kz-dispersive bulk bands, resonant surface state is also observed in the momentum space. Our finds strongly suggest that more details need to be considered to fully understand the electronic proper…
We follow in real-time and under controlled conditions the oxidation of the organic semiconductor rubrene grown on SiO_2 using spectroscopic ellipsometry. We derive the complex dielectric function epsilon_1 + i epsilon_2 for pristine and oxidized rubrene showing that the oxidation is accompanied by a significant change of the optical properties, namely the absorption. We observe that photo-oxidation of rubrene is orders of magnitude faster than oxidation without illumination. By following different absorption bands (around 2.5eV and 4.0eV for pristine rubrene and around 4.9eV for oxidized rubr…
Black phosphorus is a quasi-two-dimensional layered semiconductor with a narrow direct band gap of 0.3 eV. A giant surface Stark effect can be produced by the potassium doping of black phosphorus, leading to a semiconductor to semimetal phase transition originating from the creation of a strong surface dipole and associated band bending. By using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we report the partial photoinduced screening of this band bending by the creation of a compensating surface photovoltage. We further resolve the detailed dynamics of this effect at the pertinent tim…
Ultrathin black phosphorus, or phosphorene, is the second known elementary two-dimensional material that can be exfoliated from a bulk van der Waals crystal. Unlike graphene it is a semiconductor with a sizeable band gap and its excellent electronic properties make it attractive for applications in transistor, logic, and optoelectronic devices. However, it is also the first widely investigated two dimensional electronic material to undergo degradation upon exposure to ambient air. Therefore a passivation method is required to study the intrinsic material properties, understand how oxidation af…
Recently, black phosphorus (BP) has joined the two dimensional material family as a promising candidate for photonic applications, due to its moderate bandgap, high carrier mobility, and compatibility with a diverse range of substrates. Photodetectors are probably the most explored BP photonic devices, however, their unique potential compared with other layered materials in the mid-infrared wavelength range has not been revealed. Here, we demonstrate BP mid infrared detectors at 3.39 um with high internal gain, resulting in an external responsivity of 82 A/W. Noise measurements show that such …
Photoinduced topological phase transitions (TPTs) in black phosphorous (BP) under compressive strain were investigated by combining Floquet theory and first-principles calculations. Intriguing photo-dressed electronic states including Floquet-Dirac semimetals and Floquet topological insulators have been identified, which can be feasibly engineered by changing the direction, intensity and frequency of incident laser. Remarkably, tunable TPT from type-I to type-II Floquet-Dirac fermions can be realized by irradiating circularly polarized laser (CPL), with an origin rooted in optical Stark effect…
Black phosphorus (bP) is the second known elemental allotrope with a layered crystal structure that can be mechanically exfoliated down to atomic layer thickness. We have fabricated bP naked quantum wells in a back-gated field effect transistor geometry with bP thicknesses ranging from $6\pm1$ nm to $47\pm1$ nm. Using an encapsulating polymer superstrate, we have suppressed bP oxidation and have observed field effect mobilities up to 600 cm$^2$/Vs and on/off current ratios exceeding $10^5$. Importantly, Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations observed in magnetotransport measurements up to 35 T r…
As an emerging single elemental layered material with a low symmetry in-plane crystal lattice, black phosphorus (BP) has attracted significant research interest owing to its unique electronic and optoelectronic properties, including its widely tunable bandgap, polarization dependent photoresponse and highly anisotropic in-plane charge transport. Despite extensive study of the steady-state charge transport in BP, there has not been direct characterization and visualization of the hot carriers dynamics in BP immediately after photoexcitation, which is crucial to understanding the performance of …
TiO2 nanotube arrays grown by anodization were coated with thin layers of polydopamine as visible light sensitizer. The PDA-coated TiO2 scaffolds were used as photocatalyst for selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol under monochromatic irradiation at 473 nm. Benzaldehyde was selectively formed and no by-products could be detected. A maximized reaction yield was obtained in O2-saturated acetonitrile. A mechanism is proposed that implies firstly the charge carrier generation in polydopamine as a consequence of visible light absorption. Secondly, photo-promoted electrons are injected in TiO2 condu…
Black phosphorus has recently attracted significant attention for its highly anisotropic properties. A variety of ultrafast optical spectroscopies has been applied to probe the carrier response to photoexcitation, but the complementary lattice response has remained unaddressed. Here we employ femtosecond electron diffraction to explore how the structural anisotropy impacts the lattice dynamics after photoexcitation. We observe two timescales in the lattice response, which we attribute to electron-phonon and phonon-phonon thermalization. Pronounced differences between armchair and zigzag direct…
Oxygen molecules are found to exhibit non-negligible reactivity with graphene under strong light irradiation in the presence of water. The reaction is triggered by the laser Raman spectroscopy measurement itself, and the D band (ca. 1340 cm-1) becomes larger as the laser irradiation is prolonged. The electronic transport properties of the graphene derivative are also investigated and both the electron and hole mobility are found to be reduced. These results are attributed to oxidation of graphene. This primitive modification method can be exploited to manipulate the structural and electronic p…
Black phosphorus is a layered semiconductor that is intensely researched in view of applications in optoelectronics. In this Letter, we investigate a multi-layer black phosphorus photo-detector that is capable of acquiring high-contrast (V>0.9) images both in the visible (λ_{VIS}=532nm) as well as in the infrared (λ_{IR}=1550nm) spectral regime. In a first step, by using photocurrent microscopy, we map the active area of the device and we characterize responsivity and gain. In a second step, by deploying the black phosphorus device as a point-like detector in a confocal microsope setup, we acq…
Achieving good quality Ohmic contacts to van der Waals materials is a challenge, since at the interface between metal and van der Waals material, different conditions can occur, ranging from the presence of a large energy barrier between the two materials to the metallization of the layered material below the contacts. In black phosphorus (bP), a further challenge is its high reactivity to oxygen and moisture, since the presence of uncontrolled oxidation can substantially change the behavior of the contacts. In this study, we investigate the influence of the metal used for the contacts to bP a…
Time-periodic light field has emerged as a control knob for manipulating quantum states in solid-state materials, cold atoms and photonic systems via hybridization with photon-dressed Floquet states in the strong coupling limit, dubbed as Floquet engineering. Such interaction leads to tailored properties of quantum materials, for example, modifications of the topological properties of Dirac materials and modulation of the optical response. Despite extensive research interests over the past decade, there is no experimental evidence of momentum-resolved Floquet band engineering of semiconductors…
The success of black phosphorus in fast electronic and photonic devices is hindered by its rapid degradation in presence of oxygen. Orthorhombic tin selenide is a representative of group IV-VI binary compounds that are robust, isoelectronic, and share the same structure with black phosphorus. We measured the band structure of SnSe and found highly anisotropic valence bands that form several valleys having fast dispersion within the layers and negligible dispersion across. This is exactly the band structure desired for efficient thermoelectric generation where SnSe has shown a great promise.
Black phosphorus has recently emerged as a promising material for high performance electronic and optoelectronic device for its high mobility, tunable mid-infrared bandgap and anisotropic electronic properties. Dynamical evolution of photo excited carriers and its induced change of transient electronic properties are critical for materials' high field performance, but remains to be explored for black phosphorus. In this work, we perform angle resolved transient reflection spectroscopy to study the dynamical evolution of anisotropic properties of black phosphorus under photo excitation. We find…
The competition between the electron-hole Coulomb attraction and the three-dimensional dielectric screening dictates the optical properties of layered semiconductors. In low-dimensional materials, the equilibrium dielectric environment can be significantly altered by the ultrafast excitation of photo-carriers, leading to renormalized band gap and exciton binding energies. Recently, black phosphorus emerged as a 2D material with strongly layer-dependent electronic properties. Here, we resolve the coherent response of screening to sub-gap photo-excitation in bulk black phosphorus and find that m…
Black phosphorus is a very promising material for telecommunication due to its direct bandgap and strong resonant absorption in near-infrared wavelength range. However, ultrafast nonlinear photonic applications relying on the ultrafast photo-carrier dynamics as well as optical nonlinearity in black phosphorus remain unexplored. In this work, we investigate nonlinear optical properties of solution exfoliated BP and demonstrate the usage of BP as a new saturable absorber for high energy pulse generation in fiber laser. In order to avoid the oxidization and degradation of BP, we encapsulated BP b…
The photo-excitation of multi-layered potassium doped black phosphorus that exists as a gapped semi-Dirac two-dimensional normal insulator (NI), transforms it into a time-reversal symmetry broken Chern insulator (CI). This transition from an NI to CI happens under a high-frequency radiation corresponding to the off-resonant regime of the Floquet theory of periodic perturbations, which here is the impinging light beam. This photo-induced topological CI phase manifests as a finite Berry curvature and forms the basis of anomalous transverse heat flow in presence of a longitudinal temperature grad…
Black Phosphorus (BP) is unique among layered materials owing to its homonuclear lattice and strong structural anisotropy. While recent investigations on few layers BP have extensively explored the in-plane (a,c) anisotropy, much less attention has been given to the out-of-plane direction (b). Here, the optical response from bulk BP is probed using polarization-resolved photoluminescence (PL), photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and resonant Raman scattering along the zigzag, out-of-plane, and armchair directions. PL reveals an unexpected b-polarized emission occurring in the visible at 1.75 eV…
The metal contacts on 2D black phosphorus field-effect transistor and photodetectors are studied. The metal work functions can significantly impact the Schottky barrier at the metal-semiconductor contact in black phosphorus devices. Higher metal work functions lead to larger output hole currents in p-type transistors, while ambipolar characteristics can be observed with lower work function metals. Photodetectors with record high photoresponsivity (223 mA/W) are demonstrated on black phosphorus through contact-engineering.
Few-layer black phosphorus, a new elemental 2D material recently isolated by mechanical exfoliation, is a high-mobility layered semiconductor with a direct bandgap that is predicted to strongly depend on the number of layers, from 0.35 eV (bulk) to 2.0 eV (single-layer). Therefore, black phosphorus is an appealing candidate for tunable photodetection from the visible to the infrared part of the spectrum. We study the photoresponse of field-effect transistors (FETs) made of few-layer black phosphorus (3 nm to 8 nm thick), as a function of excitation wavelength, power and frequency. In the dark …
Atomically thin black phosphorus (BP) is a promising two-dimensional material for fabricating electronic and optoelectronic nano-devices with high mobility and tunable bandgap structures. However, the charge-carrier mobility in few-layer phosphorene (monolayer BP) is mainly limited by the presence of impurity and disorders. In this study, we demonstrate that vertical BP heterostructure devices offer great advantages in probing the electron states of monolayer and few-layer phosphorene at temperatures down to 2 K through capacitance spectroscopy. Electronic states in the conduction and valence …
Black phosphorus has attracted interest as a material for use in optoelectronic devices due to many favorable properties such as a high carrier mobility, field-effect, and a direct bandgap that can range from 0.3 eV in its bulk crystalline form to 2 eV for a single atomic layer. The low bandgap energy for bulk black phosphorus allows for direct transition photoabsorption that enables detection of light out to mid-infrared frequencies. In this work we characterize the room temperature optical response of a black phosphorus photoconductive detector at wavelengths ranging from 1.56 $μ$m to 3.75 $…

Phosphorene, a two-dimensional (2D) monolayer of black phosphorus, has attracted considerable theoretical interest, although the experimental realization of monolayer, bilayer, and few-layer flakes has been a significant challenge. Here we systematically survey conditions for liquid exfoliation to achieve the first large-scale production of monolayer, bilayer, and few-layer phosphorus, with exfoliation demonstrated at the 10-gram scale. We describe a rapid approach for quantifying the thickness of 2D phosphorus and show that monolayer and few-layer flakes produced by our approach are crystalli…
CO oxidation on Ru(0001) is a long-standing example of a reaction that, being thermally forbidden in ultra-high vacuum, can be activated by femtosecond laser pulses. In spite of its relevance, the precise dynamics of the photo-induced oxidation process as well as the reasons behind the dominant role of the competing CO photo-desorption remain unclear. Here we use ab initio molecular dynamics with electronic friction that account for the highly excited and non-equilibrated system created by the laser to investigate both reactions. Our simulations successfully reproduce the main experimental fin…
Exfoliated black phosphorus has recently emerged as a new two-dimensional crystal that, due to its peculiar and anisotropic crystalline and electronic band structures, may have potentially important applications in electronics, optoelectronics and photonics. Despite the fact that the edges of layered crystals host a range of singular properties whose characterization and exploitation are of utmost importance for device development, the edges of black phosphorus remain poorly characterized. In this work, the atomic structure and the behavior of phonons near different black phosphorus edges are …
Artificial semiconductor heterostructures played a pivotal role in modern electronic and photonic technologies, providing a highly effective mean for the manipulation and control of carriers, from the visible to the far-infrared. Despite the exceptional versatility, they commonly require challenging epitaxial growth procedures due to the need of clean and abrupt interfaces, which proved to be a major obstacle for the realization of room-temperature (RT), high-efficiency devices, like source, detectors or modulators. The discovery of graphene and the related fascinating capabilities have trigge…
The mid-infrared (MIR) spectral range, pertaining to important applications such as molecular 'fingerprint' imaging, remote sensing, free space telecommunication and optical radar, is of particular scientific interest and technological importance. However, state-of-the-art materials for MIR detection are limited by intrinsic noise and inconvenient fabrication processes, resulting in high cost photodetectors requiring cryogenic operation. We report black arsenic-phosphorus-based long wavelength infrared photodetectors with room temperature operation up to 8.2 um, entering the second MIR atmosph…
Artificial lattices have been employed in many two-dimensional systems, including those of electrons, atoms and photons, in a quest for massless Dirac particles with flexibility and controllability. Periodically patterned molecule assembly and electrostatic gating as well as moiré pattern induced by substrate, have produced electronic states with linear dispersions from isotropic two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). Here we demonstrate that massless Dirac fermions with tunable anisotropic characteristics can, in general, be generated in highly anisotropic 2DEG under slowly varying external per…
The discovery of graphene and the related fascinating capabilities have triggered an unprecedented interest in inorganic two-dimensional (2D) materials. Despite the impressive impact in a variety of photonic applications, the absence of energy gap has hampered its broader applicability in many optoelectronic devices. The recent advance of novel 2D materials, such as transition-metal dichalcogenides or atomically thin elemental materials, (e.g. silicene, germanene and phosphorene) promises a revolutionary step-change. Here we devise the first room-temperature Terahertz (THz) frequency detector …
We present polarization-resolved transient transmission measurements on multi-layer black phosphorus. Background free two-color pump-probe spectroscopy measurements are carried out on mechanically exfoliated black phosphorus flakes that have been transferred to a large-bandgap, silicon carbide substrate. The blue-shifted pump pulse (780 nm) induces an increased transmission of the probe pulse (1560 nm) over a time scale commensurate with the measurement resolution (hundreds of fs). After the initial pump-induced transparency, the sign of the transient flips and a slower enhanced absorption is …
Gallium selenide (GaSe) is a 2D material with a thickness-dependent gap, strong non-linear optical coefficients and uncommon interband optical selection rules, making it interesting for optoelectronic and spintronic applications. In this work, we monitor the oxidation dynamics of GaSe with thicknesses ranging from 10 to 200 nm using Raman spectroscopy. In ambient temperature and humidity conditions, the intensity of all Raman modes and the luminescence decrease rapidly with moderate exposure to above-gap illumination. Concurrently, several oxidation products appear in the Raman spectra: Ga$_2$…
We report the fabrication, characterization, and modeling of photoconductive antennas using 40 nm thin-film flakes of black phosphorus (BP) as the photoconductor and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) as a capping layer to prevent oxidation of BP. Dipole antennas were fabricated on oxidized high-resistivity Si substrates, and BP and hBN flakes were picked up and transferred onto the antenna inside a nitrogen glovebox. The transfer matrix technique was used to optimize the thickness of BP and hBN for maximum absorption. BP flakes were aligned with the armchair axis along the anode-cathode gap of the…
Graphene is an ultrathin material, which allows us to control surface phenomena by means of field-effect gating. Among various surface phenomena, photo-oxidation is known to be a facile method to largely control the electronic structure of graphene. In this study, gate controllability of photo-oxidation of graphene is thoroughly examined using a field-effect-transistor configuration. The presence of water molecules enhances gate controllability, which can be explained using water-oxygen co-adsorption picture. In addition, the photo-oxidation reaction evolves from the edge and proceeds towards …
Generally adopted design strategies for enhancing the photocatalytic activity are aimed at tuning properties such as the visible light response, the exposed crystal facets, and the nanocrystal shape. Here, we present a different approach for designing efficient photocatalysts displaying a substrate-specific reactivity upon defect engineering. The defective anisotropic brookite TiO2 photocatalyst functionalized with Pt nanocrystals are tested for alcohol photoreforming showing up to an 11-fold increase in methanol oxidation rate, compared to the unreduced one, whilst presenting much lower ethan…
The photovoltaic effect is one of the fundamental light-matter interactions in light energy harvesting. In conventional photovoltaic solar cells, the photogenerated charge carriers are extracted by the built-in electric field of a PN junction, typically defined by ionic dopants in a semiconductor. In atomically thin semiconductors, the doping level can be controlled by the field-effect without need of implanting dopants in the lattice, which makes 2D semiconductors prospective materials to implement electrically tunable PN junctions. However, most 2D semiconducting materials do not show ambipo…
In2S3(1-x)O3x is known from preceding studies to have a bandgap varying continuously as a function of x, the reason why this solid solution is potentially interesting in the field of photovoltaics. In this work, we present results on oxidation of In2S3 by heating in air atmosphere to obtain the desired material. The oxidation is accompanied by a mass loss due to the substitution of S by O atoms that is studied by means of thermogravimetric analysis. It appears that the temperature region in which the oxidation occurs is strongly dependent on the texture of deposited films. As-grown films depos…
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on III-V/II-VI materials have delivered a compelling performance in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) region, which enabled wide-ranging applications, including environmental monitoring, defense and medical diagnostics. Continued efforts are underway to realize on-chip sensors via heterogeneous integration of mid-IR emitters on a silicon photonic chip. But the uptake of such approach is limited by the high costs and interfacial strains, associated with the process of heterogeneous integrations. Here, the black phosphorus (BP)-based van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure…
This paper proposes a physio-chemically-based constitutive framework to simulate and predict the response of semi-crystalline low-density polyethylene (LDPE) to severe photo-oxidation. Photo-oxidation induced by exposure to Ultra-Violet (UV) light and oxygen is the dominant degradation mechanism affecting the lifespan of LDPE. In this work, we propose evolution functions for the material properties in the constitutive equations of \cite{boyce2000constitutive} to incorporate the effects of photo-oxidation on the mechanical response of LDPE. The evolution functions are based on chemically verifi…
Black phosphorous (BP) is a layered semiconductor with high carrier mobility, anisotropic optical response and wide bandgap tunability. In view of its application in optoelectronic devices, understanding transient photo-induced effects is crucial. Here, we investigate by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy BP in its pristine state and in the presence of Stark splitting, chemically induced by Cs ad-sorption. We show that photo-injected carriers trigger bandgap renormalization and a concurrent valence band attening caused by Pauli blocking. In the biased sample, photoexcitation l…
Raman scattering and photoluminescence spectroscopy are used to investigate the optical properties of single layer black phosphorus obtained by mechanical exfoliation of bulk crystals under an argon atmosphere. The Raman spectroscopy, performed in situ on the same flake as the photoluminescence measurements, demonstrates the single layer character of the investigated samples. The emission spectra, dominated by excitonic effects, display the expected in plane anisotropy. The emission energy depends on the type of substrate on which the flake is placed due to the different dielectric screening. …
