This paper presents the Speech Technology Center (STC) systems submitted to Automatic Speaker Verification Spoofing and Countermeasures (ASVspoof) Challenge 2015. In this work we investigate different acoustic feature spaces to determine reliable and robust countermeasures against spoofing attacks. In addition to the commonly used front-end MFCC features we explored features derived from phase spectrum and features based on applying the multiresolution wavelet transform. Similar to state-of-the-art ASV systems, we used the standard TV-JFA approach for probability modelling in spoofing detection systems. Experiments performed on the development and evaluation datasets of the Challenge demonstrate that the use of phase-related and wavelet-based features provides a substantial input into the efficiency of the resulting STC systems. In our research we also focused on the comparison of the linear (SVM) and nonlinear (DBN) classifiers.
The automatic speaker verification spoofing (ASVspoof) challenge series is crucial for enhancing the spoofing consideration and the countermeasures growth. Although the recent ASVspoof 2019 validation results indicate the significant capability to identify most attacks, the model's recognition effect is still poor for some attacks. This paper presents the Online Hard Example Mining (OHEM) algorithm for detecting unknown voice spoofing attacks. The OHEM is utilized to overcome the imbalance between simple and hard samples in the dataset. The presented system provides an equal error rate (EER) o…
We present JHU's system submission to the ASVspoof 2019 Challenge: Anti-Spoofing with Squeeze-Excitation and Residual neTworks (ASSERT). Anti-spoofing has gathered more and more attention since the inauguration of the ASVspoof Challenges, and ASVspoof 2019 dedicates to address attacks from all three major types: text-to-speech, voice conversion, and replay. Built upon previous research work on Deep Neural Network (DNN), ASSERT is a pipeline for DNN-based approach to anti-spoofing. ASSERT has four components: feature engineering, DNN models, network optimization and system combination, where th…

The Automatic Speaker Verification Spoofing and Countermeasures Challenges motivate research in protecting speech biometric systems against a variety of different access attacks. The 2017 edition focused on replay spoofing attacks, and involved participants building and training systems on a provided dataset (ASVspoof 2017). More than 60 research papers have so far been published with this dataset, but none have sought to answer why countermeasures appear successful in detecting spoofing attacks. This article shows how artefacts inherent to the dataset may be contributing to the apparent succe…

ASVspoof, now in its third edition, is a series of community-led challenges which promote the development of countermeasures to protect automatic speaker verification (ASV) from the threat of spoofing. Advances in the 2019 edition include: (i) a consideration of both logical access (LA) and physical access (PA) scenarios and the three major forms of spoofing attack, namely synthetic, converted and replayed speech; (ii) spoofing attacks generated with state-of-the-art neural acoustic and waveform models; (iii) an improved, controlled simulation of replay attacks; (iv) use of the tandem detectio…
Recent works on speech spoofing countermeasures still lack generalization ability to unseen spoofing attacks. This is one of the key issues of ASVspoof challenges especially with the rapid development of diverse and high-quality spoofing algorithms. In this work, we address the generalizability of spoofing detection by proposing prototypical loss under the meta-learning paradigm to mimic the unseen test scenario during training. Prototypical loss with metric-learning objectives can learn the embedding space directly and emerges as a strong alternative to prevailing classification loss function…
Several studies have proposed deep-learning-based models to predict the mean opinion score (MOS) of synthesized speech, showing the possibility of replacing human raters. However, inter- and intra-rater variability in MOSs makes it hard to ensure the high performance of the models. In this paper, we propose a multi-task learning (MTL) method to improve the performance of a MOS prediction model using the following two auxiliary tasks: spoofing detection (SD) and spoofing type classification (STC). Besides, we use the focal loss to maximize the synergy between SD and STC for MOS prediction. Expe…

Growing interest in automatic speaker verification (ASV)systems has lead to significant quality improvement of spoofing attackson them. Many research works confirm that despite the low equal er-ror rate (EER) ASV systems are still vulnerable to spoofing attacks. Inthis work we overview different acoustic feature spaces and classifiersto determine reliable and robust countermeasures against spoofing at-tacks. We compared several spoofing detection systems, presented so far,on the development and evaluation datasets of the Automatic SpeakerVerification Spoofing and Countermeasures (ASVspoof) Cha…
The second Automatic Speaker Verification Spoofing and Countermeasures challenge (ASVspoof 2017) focused on "replay attack" detection. The best deep-learning systems to compete in ASVspoof 2017 used Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) as a feature extractor. In this paper, we study their performance in an end-to-end setting. We find that these architectures show poor generalization in the evaluation dataset, but find a compact architecture that shows good generalization on the development data. We demonstrate that for this dataset it is not easy to obtain a similar level of generalization on …

Spoofing detection for automatic speaker verification (ASV), which is to discriminate between live speech and attacks, has received increasing attentions recently. However, all the previous studies have been done on the clean data without significant additive noise. To simulate the real-life scenarios, we perform a preliminary investigation of spoofing detection under additive noisy conditions, and also describe an initial database for this task. The noisy database is based on the ASVspoof challenge 2015 database and generated by artificially adding background noises at different signal-to-noi…
Recent advances in sophisticated synthetic speech generated from text-to-speech (TTS) or voice conversion (VC) systems cause threats to the existing automatic speaker verification (ASV) systems. Since such synthetic speech is generated from diverse algorithms, generalization ability with using limited training data is indispensable for a robust anti-spoofing system. In this work, we propose a transfer learning scheme based on the wav2vec 2.0 pretrained model with variational information bottleneck (VIB) for speech anti-spoofing task. Evaluation on the ASVspoof 2019 logical access (LA) database…
ASVspoof 2021 is the forth edition in the series of bi-annual challenges which aim to promote the study of spoofing and the design of countermeasures to protect automatic speaker verification systems from manipulation. In addition to a continued focus upon logical and physical access tasks in which there are a number of advances compared to previous editions, ASVspoof 2021 introduces a new task involving deepfake speech detection. This paper describes all three tasks, the new databases for each of them, the evaluation metrics, four challenge baselines, the evaluation platform and a summary of …
Self-supervised speech model is a rapid progressing research topic, and many pre-trained models have been released and used in various down stream tasks. For speech anti-spoofing, most countermeasures (CMs) use signal processing algorithms to extract acoustic features for classification. In this study, we use pre-trained self-supervised speech models as the front end of spoofing CMs. We investigated different back end architectures to be combined with the self-supervised front end, the effectiveness of fine-tuning the front end, and the performance of using different pre-trained self-supervise…

Voice anti-spoofing systems are crucial auxiliaries for automatic speaker verification (ASV) systems. A major challenge is caused by unseen attacks empowered by advanced speech synthesis technologies. Our previous research on one-class learning has improved the generalization ability to unseen attacks by compacting the bona fide speech in the embedding space. However, such compactness lacks consideration of the diversity of speakers. In this work, we propose speaker attractor multi-center one-class learning (SAMO), which clusters bona fide speech around a number of speaker attractors and pushe…

The ASVspoof2019 is the extended version of the previous challenges and includes 2 evaluation conditions: logical access use-case scenario with speech synthesis and voice conversion attack types and physical access use-case scenario with replay attacks. During the challenge we developed anti-spoofing solutions for both scenarios. The proposed systems are implemented using deep learning approach and are based on different types of acoustic features. We enhanced Light CNN archit…

Human voices can be used to authenticate the identity of the speaker, but the automatic speaker verification (ASV) systems are vulnerable to voice spoofing attacks, such as impersonation, replay, text-to-speech, and voice conversion. Recently, researchers developed anti-spoofing techniques to improve the reliability of ASV systems against spoofing attacks. However, most methods encounter difficulties in detecting unknown attacks in practical use, which often have different statistical distributions from known attacks. Especially, the fast development of synthetic voice spoofing algorithms is g…
With the rapid development of speech conversion and speech synthesis algorithms, automatic speaker verification (ASV) systems are vulnerable to spoofing attacks. In recent years, researchers had proposed a number of anti-spoofing methods based on hand-crafted features. However, using hand-crafted features rather than raw waveform will lose implicit information for anti-spoofing. Inspired by the promising performance of ConvNeXt in image classification tasks, we revise the ConvNeXt network architecture and propose a lightweight end-to-end anti-spoofing model. By integrating with the channel att…

With the development of speech synthesis techniques, automatic speaker verification systems face the serious challenge of spoofing attack. In order to improve the reliability of speaker verification systems, we develop a new filter bank based cepstral feature, deep neural network filter bank cepstral coefficients (DNN-FBCC), to distinguish between natural and spoofed speech. The deep neural network filter bank is automatically generated by training a filter bank neural network (FBNN) using natural and synthetic speech. By adding restrictions on the training rules, the learned weight matrix of …

In recent years, synthetic speech generated by advanced text-to-speech (TTS) and voice conversion (VC) systems has caused great harms to automatic speaker verification (ASV) systems, urging us to design a synthetic speech detection system to protect ASV systems. In this paper, we propose a new speech anti-spoofing model named ResWavegram-Resnet (RW-Resnet). The model contains two parts, Conv1D Resblocks and backbone Resnet34. The Conv1D Resblock is based on the Conv1D block with a residual connection. For the first part, we use the raw waveform as input and feed it to the stacked Conv1D Resblo…
In this study, we analyze the role of various categories of subsidiary information in conducting replay attack spoofing detection: `Room Size', `Reverberation', `Speaker-to-ASV distance, `Attacker-to-Speaker distance', and `Replay Device Quality'. As a means of analyzing subsidiary information, we use two frameworks to either subtract or include a category of subsidiary information to the code extracted from a deep neural network. For subtraction, we utilize an adversarial process framework which makes the code orthogonal to the basis vectors of the subsidiary information. For addition, we uti…

Automatic speaker verification, like every other biometric system, is vulnerable to spoofing attacks. Using only a few minutes of recorded voice of a genuine client of a speaker verification system, attackers can develop a variety of spoofing attacks that might trick such systems. Detecting these attacks using the audio cues present in the recordings is an important challenge. Most existing spoofing detection systems depend on knowing the used spoofing technique. With this research, we aim at overcoming this limitation, by examining robust audio features, both traditional and those learned thr…
This paper presents a simple but effective method that uses multi-resolution feature maps with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for anti-spoofing in automatic speaker verification (ASV). The central idea is to alleviate the problem that the feature maps commonly used in anti-spoofing networks are insufficient for building discriminative representations of audio segments, as they are often extracted by a single-length sliding window. Resulting trade-offs between time and frequency resolutions restrict the information in single spectrograms. The proposed method improves both frequency resolu…
The cues needed to detect spoofing attacks against automatic speaker verification are often located in specific spectral sub-bands or temporal segments. Previous works show the potential to learn these using either spectral or temporal self-attention mechanisms but not the relationships between neighbouring sub-bands or segments. This paper reports our use of graph attention networks (GATs) to model these relationships and to improve spoofing detection performance. GATs leverage a self-attention mechanism over graph structured data to model the data manifold and the relationships between nodes…

Speaker verification systems have been used in many production scenarios in recent years. Unfortunately, they are still highly prone to different kinds of spoofing attacks such as voice conversion and speech synthesis, etc. In this paper, we propose a new method base on physiological-physical feature fusion to deal with voice spoofing attacks. This method involves feature extraction, a densely connected convolutional neural network with squeeze and excitation block (SE-DenseNet), multi-scale residual neural network with squeeze and excitation block (SE-Res2Net) and feature fusion strategies. W…
Artefacts that serve to distinguish bona fide speech from spoofed or deepfake speech are known to reside in specific subbands and temporal segments. Various approaches can be used to capture and model such artefacts, however, none works well across a spectrum of diverse spoofing attacks. Reliable detection then often depends upon the fusion of multiple detection systems, each tuned to detect different forms of attack. In this paper we show that better performance can be achieved when the fusion is performed within the model itself and when the representation is learned automatically from raw w…

The choice of an optimal time-frequency resolution is usually a difficult but important step in tasks involving speech signal classification, e.g., speech anti-spoofing. The variations of the performance with different choices of timefrequency resolutions can be as large as those with different model architectures, which makes it difficult to judge what the improvement actually comes from when a new network architecture is invented and introduced as the classifier. In this paper, we propose a multi-resolution front-end for feature extraction in an end-to-end classification framework. Optimal w…

The evolution of modern voice controlled devices (VCDs) in recent years has revolutionized the Internet of Things, and resulted in increased realization of smart homes, personalization and home automation through voice commands. The introduction of VCDs in IoT is expected to give emergence of new subfield of IoT, called Multimedia of Thing (MoT). These VCDs can be exploited in IoT driven environment to generate various spoofing attacks including the replays. Replay attacks are generated through replaying the recorded audio of legitimate human speaker with the intent of deceiving the VCDs havin…
Albeit recent progress in speaker verification generates powerful models, malicious attacks in the form of spoofed speech, are generally not coped with. Recent results in ASVSpoof2015 and BTAS2016 challenges indicate that spoof-aware features are a possible solution to this problem. Most successful methods in both challenges focus on spoof-aware features, rather than focusing on a powerful classifier. In this paper we present a novel raw waveform based deep model for spoofing detection, which jointly acts as a feature extractor and classifier, thus allowing it to directly classify speech signa…
In this paper, we perform an in-depth study of how data augmentation techniques improve synthetic or spoofed audio detection. Specifically, we propose methods to deal with channel variability, different audio compressions, different band-widths, and unseen spoofing attacks, which have all been shown to significantly degrade the performance of audio-based systems and Anti-Spoofing systems. Our results are based on the ASVspoof 2021 challenge, in the Logical Access (LA) and Deep Fake (DF) categories. Our study is Data-Centric, meaning that the models are fixed and we significantly improve the re…
State-of-the-art methods for audio generation suffer from fingerprint artifacts and repeated inconsistencies across temporal and spectral domains. Such artifacts could be well captured by the frequency domain analysis over the spectrogram. Thus, we propose a novel use of long-range spectro-temporal modulation feature -- 2D DCT over log-Mel spectrogram for the audio deepfake detection. We show that this feature works better than log-Mel spectrogram, CQCC, MFCC, as a suitable candidate to capture such artifacts. We employ spectrum augmentation and feature normalization to decrease overfitting an…

It is well known that speaker verification systems are subject to spoofing attacks. The Automatic Speaker Verification Spoofing and Countermeasures Challenge -- ASVSpoof2015 -- provides a standard spoofing database, containing attacks based on synthetic speech, along with a protocol for experiments. This paper describes CPqD's systems submitted to the ASVSpoof2015 Challenge, based on deep neural networks, working both as a classifier and as a feature extraction module for a GMM and a SVM classifier. Results show the validity of this approach, achieving less than 0.5\% EER for known attacks.

Automatic speaker verification (ASV) technology is recently finding its way to end-user applications for secure access to personal data, smart services or physical facilities. Similar to other biometric technologies, speaker verification is vulnerable to spoofing attacks where an attacker masquerades as a particular target speaker via impersonation, replay, text-to-speech (TTS) or voice conversion (VC) techniques to gain illegitimate access to the system. We focus on TTS and VC that represent the most flexible, high-end spoofing attacks. Most of the prior studies on synthesized or converted sp…
Automatic Speaker Verification (ASV) is the process of identifying a person based on the voice presented to a system. Different synthetic approaches allow spoofing to deceive ASV systems (ASVs), whether using techniques to imitate a voice or recunstruct the features. Attackers try to beat up the ASVs using four general techniques; impersonation, speech synthesis, voice conversion, and replay. The last technique is considered as a common and high potential tool for spoofing purposes since replay attacks are more accessible and require no technical knowledge from adversaries. In this study, we i…
