A spin-1 Heisenberg model on trimerized Kagomé lattice is studied by doing a low-energy bosonic theory in terms of plaquette-triplons defined on its triangular unit-cells. The model has an intra-triangle antiferromagnetic exchange interaction, $J$ (set to 1), and two inter-triangle couplings, $J^\prime>0$ (nearest-neighbor) and $J^{\prime\prime}$ (next-nearest-neighbor; of both signs). The triplon analysis of this model studies the stability of the trimerized singlet (TS) ground state in the $J^\prime$-$J^{\prime\prime}$ plane. It gives a quantum phase diagram that has two gapless antiferromagnetically (AF) ordered phases separated by the spin-gapped TS phase. The TS ground state is found to be stable on $J^{\prime\prime}=0$ line (the nearest-neighbor case), and on both sides of it for $J^{\prime\prime}\neq 0$, in an extended region bounded by the critical lines of transition to the gapless AF phases. The gapless phase in the negative $J^{\prime\prime}$ region has a $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ coplanar $120^\circ$-AF order, with all the moments of equal length and relative angles of $120^\circ$. The other AF phase, in the positive $J^{\prime\prime}$ region, is found to exhibit a different coplanar order with ordering wave vector ${\bf q}=(0,0)$. Here, two magnetic moments in a triangle are of same magnitude, but shorter than the third. While the angle between the two short moments is $120^\circ-2δ$, it is $120^\circ+δ$ between a short and the long one. Only when $J^{\prime\prime}=J^\prime$, their magnitudes become equal and the relative-angles $120^\circ$. This ${\bf q}=(0,0)$ phase has the translational symmetry of the Kagomé lattice with isosceles triangular unit-cells. The ratio of the intensities of certain Bragg peaks, $I_{(1,0)}/I_{(0,1)} = 4\sin^2{(\fracπ{6}+δ)}$, presents an experimental measure of the deviation, $δ$, from the $120^\circ$ order.
In the context of the $S=1$ kagome antiferromagnet Na$_2$Ti$_3$Cl$_8$, we respond to the comment by Khomskii et al. [D.I. Khomskii, T. Mizokawa and S.V. Streltsov, Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 049701 (2021)] on previous work by Paul et al. [A. Paul, C.-M. Chung, T. Birol, and H. J. Changlani, Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 167203 (2020)].
An effective spin-orbit Hamiltonian is derived for a spin-1/2 trimerized kagome antiferromagnet in the second-order of perturbation theory in the ratio of two coupling constants. Low-energy singlet states of the obtained model are mapped to a quantum dimer model on a triangular lattice. The quantum dimer model is dominated by dimer resonances on a few shortest loops of the triangular lattice. Characteristic energy scale for the dimer model constitutes only a small fraction of the weaker exchange coupling constant.
Spin-1 antiferromagnets are abundant in nature, but few theories or results exist to understand their general properties and behavior, particularly in situations when geometric frustration is present. Here we study the $S=1$ Kagome compound Na$_2$Ti$_3$Cl$_8$ using a combination of Density Functional Theory, Exact Diagonalization, and Density Matrix Renormalization Group methods to achieve a first principles supported explanation of exotic magnetic phases in this compound. We find that the effective magnetic Hamiltonian includes essential non-Heisenberg terms that do not stem from spin-orbit c…
We study the phase diagram of the spin-1 quantum bilinear-biquadratic antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice using exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group algorithm. The SU(3)-symmetric point of this model Hamiltonian is a spontaneously trimerized state whose qualitative nature persists even at the Heisenberg point, a finding that contrasts previous proposals. We report the ground state energy per site of the Heisenberg model to be -1.410(2) and establish the presence of a spin gap.
{Extensive calculations in the short-range RVB (Resonating valence bond) subspace on both the trimerized and the regular (non-trimerized) Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice show that short-range dimer singlets capture the specific low-energy features of both models. In the trimerized case the singlet spectrum splits into bands in which the average number of dimers lying on one type of bonds is fixed. These results are in good agreement with the mean field solution of an effective model recently introduced. For the regular model one gets a continuous, gapless spectrum, in qualitative agreem…
We theoretically study low-temperature properties of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with half-integer spin $S$ on the Kagome lattice with large trimerization. We have derived a low-energy effective model for general $S$ in terms of spin and nematicity operators in triangular units, and studied their low-temperature correlations for S=3/2 by classical Monte Carlo simulations. The previous study for the S=1/2 case [M. Ferrero et al., Phys. Rev. B 68, 214431 (2003)] reported a spin liquid state at low temperatures driven by a glassy behavior of isolated dimers and trimers of nematicities.…
We use non-perturbative linked-cluster expansions to determine the ground-state energy per site of the spin-one Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice. To this end, a parameter is introduced allowing to interpolate between a fully trimerized state and the isotropic model. The ground-state energy per site of the full graph decomposition up to graphs of six triangles (18 spins) displays a complex behaviour as a function of this parameter close to the isotropic model which we attribute to divergencies of partial series in the graph expansion of quasi-1d unfrustrated chain graphs. More concretely,…
We derive and study a spin-orbital model for ions with $d^1$ electronic configuration on a honeycomb lattice. In this system, the directional character of $t_{2g}$ orbital leads to extensively degenerate dimerized ground states. We find that additional interactions from charge transfer processes completely lift the degeneracy and stabilize the Kekule spin-orbit dimerized phase where dimers form a kagome superlattice. For such phase, the triplon band spectrum resembles the electronic band structure of the kagome lattice and becomes topologically non-trivial in the presence of inter-dimer Dzyalo…
We demonstrate the possibility of creating and controlling an ideal and \textit{trimerized} optical Kagomé lattice, and study the low temperature physics of various atomic gases in such lattices. In the trimerized Kagomé lattice, a Bose gas exhibits a Mott transition with fractional filling factors, whereas a spinless interacting Fermi gas at 2/3 filling behaves as a quantum magnet on a triangular lattice. Finally, a Fermi-Fermi mixture at half filling for both components represents a frustrated quantum antiferromagnet with a resonating-valence-bond ground state and quantum spin liquid behavio…
We study the competition between $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ (RT3) and $q=0$ (Q0) magnetic orders in spin-one and spin-$3/2$ Kagome-lattice XXZ antiferromagnets with varying XY anisotropy parameter $Δ$, using series expansion methods. The Hamiltonian is split into two parts: an $H_0$ which favors the classical order in the desired pattern and an $H_1$, which is treated in perturbation theory by a series expansion. We find that the ground state energy series for the RT3 and Q0 phases are identical up to sixth order in the expansion, but ultimately a selection occurs, which depends on spin and th…
Motivated by the recent neutron scattering experiment on Rb2Cu3SnF12 [Nat. Phys. 6, 865 (2010)], we investigate the effect of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in a theoretical model for the magnetic structure of this material. Considering the valence bond solid ground state, which has a 12-site unit cell, we develop the bond operator mean-field theory. It is shown that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions significantly modify the triplon dispersions around the Gamma point and cause a shift of the spin gap (the minimum triplon gap) position from the K to Gamma point in the first Brilloin zo…
In two-dimensional incompressible quantum spin liquids, a large enough magnetic field generically induces "doping" of polarized S=1 triplons or S=1/2 spinons. We review a number of cases such as spin-3/2 AKLT or spin-1/2 Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) liquids where the Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS) framework provides very simple and comprehensive pictures. On the bipartite honeycomb lattice, simple PEPS can describe Bose condensed triplons (AKLT) or spinons (RVB) superfluids with transverse staggered (Néel) magnetic order. On the Kagome lattice, doping the RVB state with deconfined spi…
We perform a systematic investigation on the hexagon-singlet solid (HSS) states, which are a class of spin liquid candidates for the spin-1 kagome antiferromagnet. With the Schwinger boson representation, we show that all HSS states have exponentially decaying correlations and can be interpreted as a (special) subset of the resonating Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) loop states. We provide a compact tensor network representation of the HSS states, with which we are able to calculate physical observables efficiently. We find that the HSS states have vanishing topological entanglement entropy…
The Hida model, defined on honeycomb lattice, is a spin-1/2 Heisenberg model of aniferromagnetic hexagons (with nearest-neighbor interaction, $J_A>0$) coupled via ferromagnetic bonds (with exchange interaction, $J_F <0$). It applies to the spin-gapped organic materials, m-MPYNN.X (for $\mathrm{X}=$I, BF4, ClO4), and for $|J_F|\gg J_A$, it reduces to the spin-$1$ kagomé Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHA). Motivated by the recent finding of trimerized singlet (TS) ground state for spin-1 KHA, we investigate the evolution of the ground state of Hida model from weak to strong $J_F/J_A$ using mean-fi…
A spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on honeycomb lattice is investigated by doing triplon analysis and quantum Monte Carlo calculations. This model, inspired by Cu$_2$(pymca)$_3$(ClO$_4$), has three different antiferromagnetic exchange interactions ($J_A$, $J_B$, $J_C$) on three different sets of nearest-neighbour bonds which form a kagome superlattice. While the model is bipartite and unfrustrated, its quantum phase diagram is found to be dominated by a quantum paramagnetic phase that is best described as a spin-gapped hexagonal-singlet state. The Néel antiferromagnetic order survives only in a small…
Using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations we show that a spin-$1/2$ XXZ model on a two-dimensional anisotropic Kagome lattice exhibits a tripartite entangled plaquette state that preserves all of the Hamiltonian symmetries. It is connected via phase boundaries to a ferromagnet and a valence-bond solid that break U(1) and lattice translation symmetries, respectively. We study the phase diagram of the model in detail, in particular the transitions to the tripartite entangled plaquette state, which are consistent with conventional order-disorder transitions. Our results can be interpreted…
Motivated by the observation of a spin-glass transition in almost disorder-free Kagome antiferromagnets, and by the specific form of the effective low-energy model of the S=1/2, trimerized Kagome antiferromagnet, we investigate the possibility to obtain a spin-glass behavior in two-component, disorder-free models. We concentrate on a toy-model, a modified Ashkin-Teller model in a magnetic field that couples only to one species of spins, for which we prove that a dynamic spin-glass behavior occurs. The dynamics of the magnetization is closely related to that of the underlying Ising model in zer…

We investigate the influence of quenched disorder on the dynamic structure factor of Heisenberg bilayers on the square, triangular, and kagome lattice in the quantum paramagnetic phase. Perturbative continuous unitary transformations and white graphs are employed to calculate the one-triplon contribution up to high orders in perturbation about the dimer limit for bimodal and continuous disorder. For the square lattice we find that the lifetime of the gap mode is increased by stronger quantum correlations while stronger disorder effects are observed for the triangular lattice due to geometric f…
We investigate the classical counterpart of an effective Hamiltonian for a strongly trimerized kagome lattice. Although the Hamiltonian only has a discrete symmetry, the classical groundstate manifold has a continuous global rotational symmetry. Two cases should be distinguished for the sign of the exchange constant. In one case, the groundstate has a 120^\circ spin structure. To determine the transition temperature, we perform Monte-Carlo simulations and measure specific heat, the order parameter as well as the associated Binder cumulant. In the other case, the classical groundstates are macr…
We introduce a generic scheme to perform non-perturbative linked cluster expansions in long-range ordered quantum phases. Clusters are considered to be surrounded by an ordered reference state leading to effective edge-fields in the exact diagonalization on clusters which break the associated symmetry of the ordered phase. Two approaches, based either on a self-consistent solution of the order parameter or on minimal sensitivity with respect to the ground-state energy per site, are formulated to find the optimal edge-field in each NLCE order. Furthermore, we investigate the scaling behavior of…
