Development of cryogenic low background detector based on enriched zinc molybdate crystal scintillators to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo
ZnMoO$_4$ scintillators with a mass of $\sim$ 0.3 kg, as well as Zn$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals enriched in the isotope $^{100}$Mo were produced for the first time by using the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique. The optical and luminescent properties of the produced crystals were studied to estimate the progress in crystal growth quality. The low-temperature tests with a 313 g ZnMoO$_4$ and two enriched Zn$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals were performed aboveground in the Centre de Sciences Nucléaires et de Sciences de la Matière. The low background measurements with a three ZnMoO$_4$ and two enriched detectors installed in the EDELWEISS set-up at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane were carried out. To optimize the light collection in ZnMoO$_4$ scintillating bolometers, we have simulated the collection of scintillation photons in a detector module for different geometries by Monte Carlo method using the GEANT4 package. Response to the 2$ν$2$β$ decay of $^{100}$Mo was simulated for the enriched Zn$^{100}$MoO$_4$ detectors of different shape and mass to understand the dependence of 2$ν$2$β$ decay spectra on crystal shape. We have simulated 48 Zn$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals with a size of Ø60 $\times$ 40 mm installed in the EDELWEISS cryostat. The contribution to background from the internal radioactive contamination of the crystals, cosmogenic activation and radioactive contamination of the set-up were simulated. Taking into account poor time resolution of the low temperature bolometers, we also studied contribution to background at the Q$_{2β}$ energy of random coincidences of signals, in particular of 2$ν$2$β$ decay, which is one of the main sources of background in cryogenic bolometers. Methods of the randomly coinciding events rejection were developed and compared. We have also analyzed dependence of the rejection efficiency on a cryogenic detector performance.
The LUMINEU program aims at performing a pilot experiment on neutrinoless double beta decay of 100Mo using radiopure ZnMoO4 crystals operated as scintillating bolometers. Growth of high quality radiopure crystals is a complex task, since there are no commercially available molybdenum compounds with the required levels of purity and radioactive contamination. This paper discusses approaches to purify molybdenum and synthesize compound for high quality radiopure ZnMoO4 crystal growth. A combination of a double sublimation (with addition of zinc molybdate) with subsequent recrystallization in aqu…
High purity Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) crystals are produced starting from elemental Zn and Se to be used for the search of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0νDBD) of 82Se. In order to increase the number of emitting nuclides, enriched 82Se is used. Dedicated production lines for the synthesis and conditioning of the Zn82Se powder in order to make it suitable for crystal growth were assembled compliant with radio-purity constraints specific to rare event physics experiments. Besides routine check of impurities concentration, high sensitivity measurements are made for radio-isotope concentrations …
A large cylindrical cadmium molybdate crystal with natural isotopic abundance has been used to fabricate a scintillating bolometer. The measurement was performed above ground at milli-Kelvin temperature, with simultaneous readout of the heat and the scintillation light. The energy resolution as FWHM has achieved from 5 keV (at 238 keV) to 13 keV (at 2615 keV). We present the results of the $α$ versus $β$/$γ$ events discrimination. The low internal trace contamination of the $\mathrm{CdMoO_4}$ crystal was evaluated as well. The detector performance with preliminary positive indications proves t…
The use of 40Ca100MoO in experimental searches for neutrinoless double beta decay (0νDBD) relies on knowledge of fundamental scintillation properties of the material. In this work we determine the absolute light yield of calcium molybdate using Monte-Carlo refractive index matching technique (MCRIM). The MCRIM technique is a combination of experiment and simulations that allows the absolute light yield of scintillators to be determined by taking into account effects of refraction, scattering and absorption in the material. The light collection efficiency of the scintillator-detector assembly w…
Large lithium molybdate (Li$_2$MoO$_4$) crystal boules were produced by using the low thermal gradient Czochralski growth technique from deeply purified molybdenum. A small sample from one of the boules was preliminary characterized in terms of X-ray-induced and thermally-excited luminescence. A large cylindrical crystalline element (with a size of $\oslash 40\times40$ mm) was used to fabricate a scintillating bolometer, which was operated aboveground at $\sim 15$ mK by using a pulse-tube cryostat housing a high-power dilution refrigerator. The excellent detector performance in terms of energy…

For such a rare event search experiment, the techniques for investigating and reducing radioactive background contaminants in detector materials are extremely crucial. This paper discusses techniques for deep purification of enriched molybdenum for growing the crystals and the recovery of 100MoO3 from the residual melt left after growing lithium molybdate crystals. The LUMINEU project aims at performing a demonstrator underground experiment searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay of the isotope $^{100}$Mo embedded in zinc molybdate (ZnMoO$_4$) scintillating bolometers. In this context, a zinc molybdate crystal boule enriched in $^{100}$Mo to 99.5\% with a mass of 171 g was grown for the first time by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique. The production cycle provided a high yield (the crystal boule mass was 84\% of initial charge) and an acceptable level -- around 4\% -- of irrecoverable losses of the costy enriched material. Two cryst…

We demonstrated that Li$_2$Mg$_2$(MoO$_4)_3$ crystals are a potentially promising detector material to search for neutrinoless double beta decay o…
The production of ultra-pure raw material is a crucial step to ensure the required background level in rare event searches. In this work, we establish an innovative technique developed to produce high-purity (99.999%) granular zinc. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the refining procedure by measuring the internal contaminations of the purified zinc with a high-purity germanium detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The total activity of cosmogenic activated nuclides is measured at the level of a few mBq/kg, as well as limits on naturally occurring radionuclides are set to less…

The Advanced Molybdenum-based Rare process Experiment in its second phase (AMoRE-II) will search for neutrinoless double-beta (0ν\b{eta}\b{eta}) decay of 100Mo in 200 kg of molybdate crystals. To achieve the zero-background level in the energy range of the double-beta decay Q-value of 100Mo, the radioactive contamination levels in AMoRE crystals should be low. 100EnrMoO3 powder, which is enriched in the 100Mo isotope, is used to grow the AMoRE crystals. A shielded array of fourteen high-purity germanium detectors with 70% relative efficiency each was used for the measurement of background acti…

The Center for Underground Physics (CUP) of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) is searching for the neutrinoless double-beta decay (0ν\b{eta}\b{eta}) of 100Mo in the molybdate crystals of the AMoRE experiment. The experiment requires pure scintillation crystals to minimize internal backgrounds that can affect the 0ν\b{eta}\b{eta} signal. For the last few years, we have been growing and studying Li2MoO4 crystals in a clean-environment facility to minimize external contamination during the crystal growth. Before growing Li2100MoO4 crystal, we have studied Li2natMoO4 crystal growth by a conven…
