Mass spectra of strange baryons are calculated in the framework of the relativistic quark model based on the quasipotential approach. Baryons are treated as the relativistic quark-diquark bound systems. It is assumed that two quarks with equal constituent masses form a diquark. The diquark excitations and its internal structure are consistently taken into account. Calculations are performed up to rather high orbital and radial excitations of strange baryons. On this basis the Regge trajectories are constructed. The obtained results are compared with available experimental data and previous predictions. It is found that all masses of the 4- and 3-star, as well as most of the 2- and 1-star states of strange baryons with established quantum numbers are well reproduced. The developed relativistic quark-diquark model predicts less excited states than three-quark models of strange baryons.
While indirect & direct CP violations (CPV) had been established in the decays of strange & beauty mesons, none have been done for baryons. There are different "roads" for finding CP asymmetries in the decays of strange baryons; they are highly non-trivial ones. The HyperCP Collaboration had probed CPV in the decays of single $Ξ$ & $Λ$ [Phys.Rev.Lett 93 (2004) 262001]. We talk about future lessons from $e^+e^-$ collisions at BESIII/BEPCII: probing decays of pairs of strange baryons, namely $Λ$, $Σ$ & $Ξ$. Realistic goals are to learn about non-perturbative QCD. One can hope to find CPV in the …
We study strange and charmed baryon productions, ${π+ p \rightarrow K(D) + Y(Y_c)}$, where ${Y(Y_c)}$ is a strange(charmed) baryon of a ground or an excited state. We propose a new production mechanism where two quarks in the baryon participate in the reaction (two-quark process), which enables excitation of both $λ$- and $ρ$-modes of the baryons. To deal with the two-quark process, we consider the 't Hooft six-quark interaction from the instanton model. We study production rates in relation with the structure of charmed baryons for the forward angle scattering.
We apply a quark model developed in earlier work to the spectrum of baryons with strangeness -2 and -3. The model describes a number of well-established baryons successfully, and application to cascade baryons allows the quantum numbers of some known states to be deduced.
By an unquenched quark model, we predict a charmed-strange baryon state, namely, the $Ω_{c0}^d(1P,1/2^-)$. Its mass is predicted to be 2945 MeV, which is below the $Ξ_c\bar{K}$ threshold due to the nontrivial coupled-channel effect. So the $Ω_{c0}^d(1P,1/2^-)$ state could be regraded as the analog of the charmed-strange meson $D_{s0}^*(2317)$. It is a good opportunity for the running Belle II experiment to search for this state in the $Ω_c^{(*)}γ$ mass spectrum experiment in the future.
Permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of fundamental particles provide powerful probes for physics beyond the Standard Model. We propose to search for the EDM of strange and charm baryons at LHC, extending the ongoing experimental program on the neutron, muon, atoms, molecules and light nuclei. The EDM of strange Lambda baryons, selected from weak decays of charm baryons produced in pp collisions at LHC, can be determined by studying the spin precession in the magnetic field of the detector tracking system. A test of CPT symmetry can be performed by measuring the magnetic dipole moment of L…
We present the energy spectra of the low lying doubly-charmed baryons using lattice quantum chromodynamics. We precisely predict the ground state mass of the charmed-strange Omega(cc) (1/2+) baryon to be 3712(11)(12) MeV which could well be the next doubly-charmed baryon to be discovered at the LHCb experiment at CERN. We also predict masses of other doubly-charmed strange baryons with quantum numbers 3/2+, 1/2-, and 3/2-.
The relativistic six-quark equations are found in the framework of the dispersion relation technique. The strange baryonia are constructed without the mixing of the quarks and antiquarks. The relativistic six-quark amplitudes of the strange baryonia with the open and hidden strange are calculated. The poles of these amplitudes determine the masses of strange baryonia. 17 masses of baryonia are predicted.
We use the method of QCD Sum Rules to estimate the masses of the charm baryon, $Λ^+_c$, bottom baryon $Λ^0_b$, strange baryon $Λ^0_s$ and compare them to their experimental values.
The LHCb Experiment at CERN has observed a doubly-charmed baryon $Ξ_{cc}^{++} =ccu$ with a mass of $3621.40 \pm 0.78$ MeV, consistent with many predictions. We use the same methods that led us to predict $M(Ξ_{cc},~J^P{=}1/2^+) = 3627 \pm 12$ MeV and $M(Ξ_{cc}^*,~J^P{=}3/2^+) = 3690 \pm 12$ MeV to predict $M(Ω_{cc}^+,J^P{=}1/2^+) = 3692 \pm 16$ MeV and $M(Ω_{cc}^*,~J^P{=} 3/2^+) = 3756 \pm 16$ MeV. Production and decay are discussed briefly, and predictions for $M(Ω_{bc})$ and $M(Ω_{bb})$ are included.
This is an extension of the prediction of strange baryon decays to the decays of charmed baryons using QCD Sum Rules. Using QCD Sum Rules we estimate the decay $Λ^+_c (udc) \rightarrow Λ^o_s(uds)+ π^+$. Although some weak decays of the $Λ^+_c$ have been measured, since it is difficult to measure $Λ^+_c \rightarrow Λ^o_s+ π^+$ our estimates should be useful for future experiments
The asymmetry of strange baryon production in Kp interactions at high energies is considered in the framework of the Quark-Gluon String Model. The contribution of the String-Junction Mechanism to the strange baryon production is analysed.
A mean-field potential version of the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model is used to investigate the production of strange baryons, especially the $Λ$s and $\overlineΛ$s, from heavy ion collisions at SPS energies. It is found that, with the consideration of both formed and pre-formed hadron potentials in UrQMD, the transverse mass and longitudinal rapidity distributions of experimental data of both $Λ$s and $\overlineΛ$s can be quantitatively explained fairly well. Our investigation also shows that both the production mechanism and the rescattering process of hadrons pl…
We briefly discuss the relativistic interacting quark-diquark model formalism and its application to the calculation of strange and nonstrange baryon spectra. The results are compared to the existing experimental data.
We give some general arguments in favor of the large magnitude of matrix elements of an operator associated with nonvalence quarks in heavy hadrons. We estimate a strange matrix element for Λ_b baryon whose valence content is b, u, d quarks. We find a noticeable contribution of the strange quark into the heavy baryon mass on the level 200-300 MeV. The arguments are based on the QCD sum rules and low energy theorems. The physical picture behind of the phenomenon is somewhat similar to the one associated with the large strange content of the nucleon where matrix element. We discuss some possible…
We describe the relativistic interacting quark-diquark model formalism and its application to the calculation of strange and nonstrange baryon spectra. The results are compared to the existing experimental data. We also discuss the application of the model to the calculation of other baryon observables, like baryon magnetic moments, open-flavor strong decays and baryon masses with self-energy corrections.
We derive a simple relation between strangeness neutrality and baryon-strangeness correlations. In heavy-ion collisions, the former is a consequence of quark number conservation of the strong interactions while the latter are sensitive probes of the character of QCD matter. This relation allows us to directly extract baryon-strangeness correlations from the strangeness chemical potential at strangeness neutrality. The explicit calculations are performed within a low energy theory of QCD with 2+1 dynamical quark flavors at finite temperature and density. Non-perturbative quark and hadron fluctu…
We review the last two decades of using photon beams to measure the production of mesons, and in particular the information that can be obtained on the spectrum of light, non-strange baryons. This is a compendium of experimental results, which should be used as a complement to theoretical reviews of the subject. Lists of data sets are given, together with a comprehensive set of references. An indication of the impact of the data is presented with a summary of the results.
A previous work establishing a connection between a quark model, with relativistic kinematics and a $Y$-confinement plus one gluon exchange, and the $1/N_c$ expansion mass formula is extended to strange baryons. Both methods predict values for the SU(3)-breaking mass terms which are in good agreement with each other. Strange and nonstrange baryons are shown to exhibit Regge trajectories with an equal slope, but with an intercept depending on the strangeness. Both approaches agree on the value of the slope and of the intercept and on the existence of a single good quantum number labeling the ba…
In a dynamical model of QGP at RHIC we obtain the temporal evolution of strange phase space occupancy at conditions expected to occur in 100+100A GeV nuclear collisions. We show that the sudden QGP break up model developed to describe the SPS experimental results implies dominance of both baryon and antibaryon abundances by the strange baryon and antibaryon yields.
Treating perturbatively the flavor symmetry breaking effects resided in the wave function as well as in the SU(3) Lagrangian, we calculate the strange form factors of decuplet baryons. The higher dimensional representation mixing components in the baryon wave function of the deccuplet baryons are found to yield the important contributions to the strange form factors, especially of the $Δ$ and $Σ^*$ baryons. The model independent sum rules among the baryon decuplet magnetic moments are also derived.
Assuming that vector and scalar diquarks exist in the Quark-Gluon Plasma near the critical temporature $T_c$, baryons can be produced through the processes of quarks and diquarks forming $({1/2})^+$ baryon states. Ratios of different baryons can be estimated through this method, if such kind of QGP with diquarks can exists.
The relativistic interacting quark-diquark model, constructed in the framework of point form dynamics, is extended to strange baryons. The strange and nonstrange baryon spectra are calculated and compared with the experimental data.
It is pointed out that the recent data on strange baryon and antibaryon production in Pb-Pb collisions at 159 GeV/c agree well with the hypothesis of an intermediate state of quasi-free and randomly distributed constituent quarks and antiquarks. Also the S-S data are consistent with this hypothesis. The p-Pb data follow a different pattern.
The strange quark plays a unique role in QCD, reflecting its intermediate mass between the light and heavy quarks. In recent years, remarkable progress has been made in the spectroscopy of baryons with strangeness. Many new features of the strange baryon spectrum have been revealed by accurate experimental data with novel techniques, as well as systematic developments of theoretical framework to describe hadron resonances. The basic properties of strange baryons, namely, the pole positions, spin and parity, and decay branching ratios, are being determined accurately. As a consequence, the Part…
The strange form factors of baryon octet are evaluated, in the chiral models with the general chiral SU(3) group structure, to yield the theoretical predictions comparable to the recent experimental data of SAMPLE Collaboration and to study the spin symmetries. Other model predictions are also briefly reviewed to compare with our results and then the strange form factors of baryon octet and decuplet are predicted.
Dark sector particles at the GeV scale carrying baryon number provide an attractive framework for understanding the origin of dark matter and the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe. We demonstrate that dark decays of hadronic states containing strange quarks -- hyperons -- offer excellent prospects for discovering such dark baryons. Building up on novel calculations of the matrix elements relevant for hyperon dark decays, and in view of various collider, flavor, and astrophysical constraints, we determine the expected rates at hyperon factories like BESIII and LHCb. We also highlight …
This is the third of a series of papers treating light baryon resonances up to 3 GeV within a relativistically covariant quark model based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation with instantaneous two- and three-body forces. In this last paper we extend our previous work on non-strange baryons to a prediction of the complete strange baryon spectrum and a detailed comparison with experiment. We apply our covariant Salpeter framework to specific quark models as introduced in the two preceding papers. Quark confinement is realized by linearly rising three-body string potentials with appropriate Dirac str…
Most of model considerations of the hidden nucleon strangeness, as well as some preliminary experimental evidence, led to the expectations of relatively sizeable strange vector form factors of the proton. For example, it seemed that the contribution of the fluctuating strange quark-antiquark pairs accounts for as much as one tenth of the proton's magnetic moment. By the same token, baryon models which failed to produce the "vector strangeness" of the nucleon seemed disfavored. Recently, however, more accurate measurements and more sophisticated data analysis, as well as lattice simulations, re…
In some models, exotic baryons with strangeness and anticharm or antibeauty should exist and even be stable against strong decay. We consider the stability of such possible exotic baryons, which in the constituent quark picture are called pentaquarks (each is composed of four quarks and an antiquark). Our model is based on diquark clustering and supersymmetry in hadrons, and assumes that the spin-dependent force between quarks arises from one-gluon exchange. In the model, a pentaquark with strangeness and anticharm can decay strongly, but an analogous pentaquark with an antibeauty quark is sta…
The decays of non-strange positive parity excited baryons via emission of a pseudo-scalar meson are studied in the framework of the 1/Nc expansion to order 1/Nc. In particular, the pionic decays of the l=0 Roper baryons and of the l=2 baryons in the mass interval 1680-1950 MeV are analyzed using the available partial decay widths. Decay widths by emission of an eta meson are shown to be suppressed by a factor 1/Nc^2 with respect to the pionic ones.
The strange magnetic form factor of the nucleon is studied in the heavy baryon chiral effective approach at next to leading order. The one loop contributions from kaon and intermediate octet and decuplet hyperons are included, using finite-range-regularization to deal with the ultra-violet divergences. Drawing on an established connection between quenched and full QCD, this model makes it possible to predict the strange magnetic form factor under the hypothesis that for a dipole regulator mass $Λ$ around 0.8 GeV, strangeness in the core is negligible. The strange magnetic form factor is found …
Witten's conjecture about strange quark matter (`Strange Matter') being the ground state of QCD at finite baryon number is presented and stars made of strange matter (`Strange Stars') are compared to neutron stars. The only observable way in which a strange star differs from a neutron star is in its early thermal history and a detailed study of strange star cooling is reported and compared to neutron star cooling. One concludes that future detection of thermal radiation from the compact object produced in the core collapse of SN 1987A could present the first evidence for strange matter.
Within an extended chiral constituent quark formalism, we investigate contributions from all possible five-quark components in the octet baryons to the pion-baryon ($σ_{πB}$) and strangeness-baryon ($σ_{s B}$) sigma terms; $B \equiv N,~Λ,~Σ,~Ξ$. The probabilities of the quark-antiquark components in the ground-state baryon octet wave functions are calculated by taking the baryons to be admixtures of three- and five-quark components, with the relevant transitions handled {\it via} the $^{3}$P$_{0}$ mechanism. Predictions for $σ_{πB}$ and $σ_{s B}$ obtained by using input parameters taken from t…
We propose a simple model of production of strange baryons and antibaryons in nuclear collisions at the CERN SPS. The model takes into account both the increase of strangeness production in collisions of lighter ions and a possibility of the formation of anomalous, strangeness rich matter in central PbPb interactions. It is shown that ratios like $<Ω>:<Ξ>:<Λ>$ depend strongly on the presence of anomalous matter and can be used to determine its phenomenological parameters. In the model we assume that particle composition of final state hadrons is essentially given by a rapid recombination of qu…
The recent data on pp collisions at 158 GeV provide severe constraints on string models: These measurements allow for the first time to determine how color strings are formed in ultrarelativistic proton-proton collisions.
By solving the Faddeev equations we calculate the mass of the strange baryons in the framework of a relativistic constituent quark model. The Goldstone-boson-exchange quark-quark interaction is derived from $SU(3)_F$ symmetry, which is explicitly broken as the strange quark is much heavier. This broken symmetry can nicely be accounted for in the Faddeev framework.
We present some recent results from soliton model calculations for the spectrum of baryons with a single heavy quark. The model comprises chiral symmetry for light flavors and (approximate) heavy spin-flavor symmetry for the heavy quarks. We focus on flavor symmetry breaking for strangeness degrees of freedom.
We study quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and hadronic gas (HG) models of the central fireball presumed to be the source of abundantly produced strange (anti-)baryons in S -> W collisions at 200 GeV A. We consider how multi-strange (anti-)baryon multiplicities depend on strangeness conservation and compare the HG and QGP fireball scenarios. We argue that the total particle multiplicity emerging from the central rapidity region as well as the variation of production rates with changes in the beam energy allows to distinguish between the two reaction scenarios.
The strange magnetic form factor of proton is calculated in a model independent way to confirm the recent experimental result of the SAMPLE Collaboration. We consider a set of six inertia parameters to realize the magnetic moments of the baryon octet. We show that the strange form factor of proton is a positive quantity, i.e. +0.37 n.m.. Its positiveness is analyzed in terms of the vacuum fluctuation coupled to the vector current along the strangeness direction.
We present results from a chiral soliton model calculation for the spectrum of baryons with a single heavy quark (charm or bottom) and non-zero strangeness. We treat the strange components within a three flavor collective coordinate quantization of the soliton that fully accounts for light flavor symmetry breaking. Heavy baryons emerge by binding a heavy meson to the soliton. The dynamics of this heavy meson is described by the heavy quark effective theory with finite mass effects included.
We investigate the structure of the SU(3) octet and decuplet baryons employing a constituent quark model designed for the study of the baryon-baryon interaction and successfully applied to the meson spectra. The model considers through the interacting potential perturbative, one-gluon exchange, and non-perturbative, boson exchanges and confinement, aspects of the underlying theory, QCD. We solve the three-quark problem by means of the Faddeev method in momentum space. We analyze the effect of the different terms in the interaction and make contact with the use of relativistic kinematics. We fi…
The masses of excited nonstrange and strange baryons belonging to the multiplet $[{\bf 70},1^-]$ are calculated in the $1/N_c$ expansion to order $1/N_c$ with a new method which allows to considerably reduce the number of linearly independent operators entering the mass formula. This study represents an extension to SU(6) of our work on nonstrange baryons, the framework of which was SU(4).
In this contribution we review the dynamics of hyperons with nucleons and nuclear matter, paying a special attention to hypernuclei. We also discuss the presence of hyperons in the inner core of neutron stars and the consequences for the structure of these compact stars.
We use the method of QCD sum rules to investigate a possible hybrid baryon with the quantum numbers of the $Λ$. Using a current composed of uds quarks in a color octet and a gluon, a strange hybrid, the $Λ_H$ is found about 500 MeV above the $Λ$, and we identify it as the $Λ(1600)$. Using our sigma/glueball model we predict a large branching fraction for the $Λ_H \to Λ+ σ(ππ$ resonance), and the experimental search for this decay mode could provide a test of the hybrid nature of the $/Lambda(1600)$.
The charge radii and quadrupole moments of baryons with nonzero strangeness are calculated using a parametrization method based on the symmetries of the strong interaction.
Decay properties of multi-strangeness $Ξ$ and $Ω$ baryon resonances are investigated within the constituent quark model by including relativistic corrections. The strong decay widths of various $Ξ$ and $Ω$ resonances are computed and tested for internal quark configurations to pin down their spin-parity ($J^P$) quantum numbers and internal structures. We found that the Roper-like resonances in the multi-strangeness sector have large decay widths bearing resemblances to their siblings in light and heavy baryon sectors. In addition, we obtained the decay ratio for the $Ω(2012)$ as $Γ{(Ω\to Ξ\bar…
We enumerated ground and excited state masses of singly heavy bottom-strange baryons using the Hypercentral Constituent Quark Model (hCQM). The screening potential is used with color-Coulomb potential, as the confining potential. We determine the possible $J^P$ values to recently observed excited states like, $Ξ_b(6100)$, $Ξ_b(6227)$, $Ξ_b(6327)$, $Ξ_b(6333)$ and four $Ω_b(6316,6330,6340,6350)$ states. The Regge trajectories are plotted in $(J, M^2)$ plane to assign the $J^P$ values and quantum numbers to recently observed states. Using the calculated spectroscopic data, properties such as mag…
We study the strangeness and charm productions induced by the pion beam, i.e. the $π^-$p $\rightarrow$ $K^{*0}Λ$ and $π^-$p $\rightarrow$ $D^{*-}Λ_c^+$ reactions, based on two different theoretical frameworks: an effective Lagrangian method and a Regge approach. In order to estimate the magnitude of the charm production relative to that of the strangeness production, we assume that the coupling constants for the charmed meson and baryon vertices are the same as those for the strangeness channel. We found that the total cross section for the charm production was about $10^3 - 10^6$ times smalle…
The ground state and first excited state masses of Omega(b) and Omega(bb) baryons are calculated in lattice QCD using dynamical 2+1 flavour gauge fields. A set of baryon operators employing different combinations of smeared quark fields was used in the framework of the variational method. Results for radial excitation energies were confirmed by carrying out a supplementary multiexponential fitting analysis. Comparison is made with quark model calculations.
The algebraic treatment of baryons is extended to strange resonances. Within this framework we study a collective string-like model in which the radial excitations are interpreted as rotations and vibrations of the strings. We derive a mass formula and closed expressions for strong and electromagnetic decay widths and use these to analyze the available experimental data.
We treat the hadrons as an ensemble of quark-gluon Fock states where contributions from sea-quarks and gluons can be studied in detail for the properties of low lying baryons. Statistical model is applied to calculate individual probabilities from various scalar, vector and tensor sea components in flavor, spin and color subspaces for each quark-gluon Fock state. The mass of strange quark is imposed in terms of constraints to the availability of strange quarks in the sea and free energy of gluons in conformity with experimental indications. We calculate multiplicities for different sets of Foc…
The phenomenological sum-rule-based approach is used to discuss the quark composition dependence of some static electroweak characteristics of baryons. The role of nonvalence degrees of freedom (the sea partons and/or peripheral meson currents) is shown to be important to select and make use of the relevant symmetry parametrization of baryon observables. The implications of the baryon magnetic moment analysis for estimation of the $Δ$q values of the spin-dependent DIS on nucleons, the contribution of hidden strangeness to the nucleon magnetic moment and to the quark-line-rule violating $ϕπ$ - pr…
We compute electroweak form factors of the nucleon and photon transition form factors of non-strange baryon resonances up to the third resonance region in a model with instanton-induced interaction. The calculation is based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation for three light constituent quarks and is fully relativistic (U. Löring {\it et al.}, Eur. Phys. J. {\bf A10}, 309 (2001)). Static nucleon properties and photon resonance couplings are in good agreement with experiment and the $Q^2$-behaviour of the experimentally known form factors up to large momentum transfer is accounted for.
Recently observed exotic baryon resonance with positive strangeness is discussed. The chiral soliton model, which allowed to predict the mass and width of this state, predicts also a number of other exotic states, strange and non-strange, some of them are, probably, observed in experiments. The existence of exotic multibaryons is expected as well, with positive strangeness or beauty, and negative charm. The possibility of binding of anticharm and antibeauty is pointed out.
In a bent crystal the $P$-odd effect of short-lived baryon spin rotation could imitate spin rotation caused by assumed EDM. Use of different behavior of $P$-odd and $T$-odd spin rotations at crystal turning around the direction of particle momentum makes it possible to exclude $P$-odd rotation contribution, when measuring short-lived baryons EDM. Subtraction of the measurement results for angle ranges $φ$ and $φ+ π$ from each other enables measuring $T$-odd rotation at scattering of negatively charged beauty and neutral baryons by axes of unbent crystal.
The mass spectra of strange baryons in the octet family are investigated in a finite-energy QCD sum rule approach based on the Gauss-Weierstrass transform. The phenomenological form of the spectral function is saturated by the ground state and two of the lowest excited states, considered as having opposite parities. Treating the ground state parameters as known, the masses, widths and couplings to the interpolating fields are determined and compared to experiment.
