Diboson resonance with mass around 2 TeV in the dijet invariant mass spectrum is reported by ATLAS experiment in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV. We propose that the candidate of resonance is a heavy neutral Higgs $H^0$ or charged Higgs $H^\pm$ and use the extended two-Higgs-doublet (THD) to demonstrate the potentiality. We find that the large Yukawa coupling to the first generation of quarks can be realized in THD and the required value for producing the right resonance production cross section is of ${\cal O}(0.06-0.2)$. Besides $WW/ZZ$ channels, we find that if the mass of pseudoscalar $A^0$ satisfies the jet mass tagging condition $|m_j - m_{Z/W}|< 13$ GeV, the diboson excess could be also caused by $ZA^0$ or $WA^0$ channel.
We investigate the implications of a putative new resonance in the TeV region coupled to the weak bosons. By studying perturbative unitarity in longitudinal WW scattering, we find that a weakly coupled spin-1 resonance, that explains the ATLAS diboson excesses, is allowed with a SM-like Higgs. On the other hand, larger values of the resonance couplings, preferred in models of strong dynamics, would imply either sizeable reduction of the Higgs couplings or new physics, beyond the diboson resonance, at a few TeV.
We investigate diboson signals in the Standard Model (SM) with an extended Higgs sector, motivated by the excesses in the diboson channels at the LHC. We begin with the unitarity sum-rules of the weak gauge boson scattering assuming the Higgs sector is extended. According to the sum-rules, we discuss the Higgs interpretations of the diboson signals and the consistency with the ATLAS diboson anomaly and other experimental constraints. As a concrete example, we propose a two-Higgs-doublet model where the Yukawa coupling of an extra CP-even scalar with up-type quark is relatively large. The dibos…
We show that the recently reported excess in resonant diboson production can be explained in the context of non-custodial composite Higgs models. Dibosons are generated via the s-channel exchange of massive vector bosons present in these models. We discuss the compatibility of the signal excess with other diboson experimental searches. We also discuss the tension between diboson production and other experimental tests of the model that include electroweak precision data, dilepton, dijet and top pair production and show that there is a region of parameter space in which they are all compatible …
The ATLAS collaboration has reported excesses in diboson invariant mass searches of new resonances around 2 TeV, which might be a prediction of new physics around that mass range. We interpret these results in the context of a modified stealth doublet model where the extra Higgs doublet has a Yukawa interaction with the first generation quarks, and show that the heavy CP-even Higgs boson can naturally explain the excesses in the WW and ZZ channels with a small Yukawa coupling, ξ\sim 0.15, and a tiny mixing angle with the SM Higgs boson, α\sim 0.06. Furthermore, the model satisfy constraints fr…
We explore the possibility that the recently reported diphoton excess at ATLAS and CMS can be accommodated within a minimal extension of a left-right symmetric model. Our setup is able to simultaneously explain the Run 2 diphoton and Run 1 diboson excesses, while providing a standard thermal freeze-out of weak-scale dark matter. In this scenario, the 750 GeV neutral right-handed Higgs triplet is responsible for the diphoton excess. Interactions of this state with the neutral and charged components of dark matter multiplets provide the dominant mechanisms for production and decay. A striking si…
The ATLAS excess in fat jet pair production is kinematically compatible with the decay of a heavy resonance into two gauge bosons plus an extra particle. This hypothesis would explain the absence of such a large excess in the analogous CMS analysis of fat dijet final states, as well as the negative results of diboson resonance searches in the semi-leptonic decay modes. If the extra particle is the Higgs boson, this hypothesis might also explain -statistical fluctuations aside- why the CMS search for WH resonances in the semi-leptonic channel finds some excess while in the fully hadronic one it…
We investigate $W'$ interpretations for the ATLAS 2 TeV diboson anomalies. The roles of the unitarity sum rules, which ensure the perturbativity of the longitudinal vector boson scattering amplitudes, are emphasized. We find the unitarity sum rules and the custodial symmetry are powerful enough to predict various nontrivial relations among $WWZ'$, $WZW'$, $WWh$, $WW'h$ and $ZZ'h$ coupling strengths in a model independent manner. We also perform surveys in the general parameter space of $W'$ models and find the ATLAS 2 TeV diboson anomalies may be interpreted as a $W'$ particle of the three sit…
Motivated by ATLAS diboson excess around 2 TeV, we investigate a phenomenology of spin-1 resonances in a model where electroweak sector in the SM is weakly coupled to strong dynamics. The spin-1 resonances, W' and Z', are introduced as effective degrees of freedom of the dynamical sector. We explore several theoretical constraints by investigating the scalar potential of the model as well as the current bounds from the LHC and precision measurements. It is found that the main decay modes are V' -> VV and V' -> Vh, and the V' width is narrow enough so that the ATLAS diboson excess can be explai…
We study the collider implication of a neutral resonance which decays to several diboson final states such as $W^+W^-$, $ZZ$, and $Zγ$ via a minimal set of effective operators. We consider both CP-even and CP-odd bosonic states with spin 0, 1, or 2. The production cross sections for the bosonic resonance states are obtained with the effective operators involving gluons (and quarks), and the branching fractions are obtained with the operators responsible for the interactions with electroweak gauge bosons. We demonstrate that each scenario allows for a broad parameter space which could accommoda…
We provide an interpretation of the recent ATLAS diboson excess in terms of a class of supersymmetric models in which the scale of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking is in the few TeV range. The particle responsible for the excess is the scalar superpartner of the Goldstone fermion associated with SUSY breaking, the sgoldstino. This scalar couples strongly to the Standard Model vector bosons and weakly to the fermions, with all coupling strengths determined by ratios of soft SUSY breaking parameters over the SUSY breaking scale. Explaining the ATLAS excess selects particular relations and ranges fo…
In view of the recent diboson resonant excesses reported by both ATLAS and CMS Collaborations, we suggest that a new weak singlet pseudo-scalar particle, $η_W$, may decay into two weak bosons while being produced in gluon fusion at the LHC. The couplings to the gauge bosons can arise from a Wess-Zumino-Witten anomaly term and thus we study an effective model based on the anomaly term as a well motivated phenomenological model. In models where the pseudo-scalar arises as a composite state, the coefficients of the anomalous couplings can be related to the fermion components of the underlying dyn…
We study an s-channel resonance $R$ as a viable candidate to fit the diboson excess reported by ATLAS. We compute the contribution of the $\sim 2$ TeV resonance $R$ to semileptonic and leptonic final states at 13 TeV LHC. To explain the absence of an excess in semileptonic channel, we explore the possibility where the particle $R$ decays to additional light scalars $X,X$ or $X,Y$. Modified analysis strategy has been proposed to study three particle final state of the resonance decay and to identify decay channels of $X$. Associated production of $R$ with gauge bosons has been studied in detail…
The ATLAS collaboration recently reported an excess of events in the high invariant mass tail of reconstructed di-boson events. We investigate their analysis and point to possible subtleties and improvements in the jet substructure implementation and data-driven background estimates.
The ATLAS collaboration has recently reported a 2.6 sigma excess in the search for a heavy resonance decaying into a pair of weak gauge bosons. Only fully hadronic final states are being looked for in the analysis. If the observed excess really originates from the gauge bosons' decays, other decay modes of the gauge bosons would inevitably leave a trace on other exotic searches. In this paper, we propose the use of the Z boson decay into a pair of neutrinos to test the excess. This decay leads to a very large missing energy and can be probed with conventional dark matter searches at the LHC. W…
We propose a new explanation for excess events observed in the search for a high-mass resonance decaying into dibosons by the ATLAS experiment. The resonance is identified as a composite spin-$0$ particle that couples to the Standard Model gauge bosons via dimension-5 operators. The excess events can be explained if the dimension-5 operators are suppressed by a mass scale of ${\cal O}(1$-$10$) TeV. We also construct a model of hidden strong gauge dynamics which realizes the spin-$0$ particle as its lightest composite state, with appropriate couplings to Standard Model gauge bosons.
This review covers results of searches for new elementary particles that decay into boson pairs (dibosons), performed at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at 7-, 8-, and 13-TeV center-of-mass energy until the year 2017. The available experimental results of the analysis of final states including most of the possible two-object combinations of W and Z bosons, photons, Higgs bosons, and gluons place stringent constraints on a variety of theoretical ideas that extend the standard model, pushing into the multi-TeV region the s…
Recently reported diboson and diphoton excesses at LHC are interpreted to be connected with heavy $WW$ zero spin resonances. The resonances appears due to the wouldbe anomalous triple interaction of the weak bosons, which is defined by well-known coupling constant $λ$. The $2\, TeV$ anomaly tentatively corresponds to weak isotopic spin 2 scalar state and the $γγ\,\,750\, GeV$ anomaly corresponds to weak isotopic spin 0 pseudoscalar state. We obtain estimates for the effect, which qualitatively agree with ATLAS data. Effects are predicted in a production of $W^+ W^-, (Z,γ) (Z,γ)$ via resonance …
We discuss the diboson excess seen by the ATLAS detector around 2 TeV in the LHC run I at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV. We explore the possibility that such an excess can arise from a $Z'$ boson which acquires mass through a $U(1)_X$ Stueckelberg extension. The corresponding $Z'$ gauge boson is leptophobic with a mass of around 2 TeV and has interactions with $SU(2)_L$ Yang-Mills fields and gauge fields of the hypercharge. The analysis predicts $Z'$ decays into $WW$ and $ZZ$ as well as into $Zγ$. Further three-body as well as four-body decays of the $Z'$ such as $WWZ, WWγ, WWZZ$ etc are predicted. In the …
From the warped extra-dimensional model interpretation of the two forward-backward asymmetries observed on heavy quarks at LEP1, AFBb, and at Tevatron, AFBt, one predicts that LHC could observe, with the luminosity collected in 2011-2012, significant excesses in the diboson production for large invariant masses of the Z+W system, mZW, and, the W+W system, mWW.
In this contribution, I have outlined recent precision measurements of the standard model (SM) multiboson production at CMS. A study of diboson production at 5 TeV constitutes an important probe of the SM at a new energy, and the data favour NNLO predictions obtained by MATRIX. A study of WZ production at 13 TeV constitutes the most comprehensive study of WZ production to date, containing inclusive and differential cross section measurements, charge asymmetry measurements, constraints on the LHC proton parton distribution functions, and constraints on anomalous values of the WWZ trilinear gaug…
We investigate the prospects for spin determination of a heavy diboson resonance using angular observables. Focusing in particular on boosted fully hadronic final states, we detail both the differences in signal efficiencies and distortions of differential distributions resulting from various jet substructure techniques. We treat the 2 TeV diboson excess as a case study, but our results are generally applicable to any future discovery in the diboson channel. Scrutinizing ATLAS and CMS analyses at 8 TeV and 13 TeV, we find that the specific cuts employed in these analyses have a tremendous impa…
New particles at the TeV-scale may have sizeable decay rates into boosted Higgs bosons or other heavy scalars. Here, we investigate the possibility of identifying such processes when the Higgs/scalar subsequently decays into a pair of W bosons, constituting a highly distinctive "diboson-jet." These can appear as a simple dilepton (plus MET) configuration, as a two-prong jet with an embedded lepton, or as a four-prong jet. We study jet substructure methods to discriminate these objects from their dominant backgrounds. We then demonstrate the use of these techniques in the search for a heavy spi…
Diboson resonance with mass of $1.8-2$ TeV is reported successively by CMS and ATLAS experiments in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV. We investigate the potentiality of Higgs singlet as the TeV resonance. The challenges of low production cross section and high width for a fundamental scalar could be got over by three factors: (1) larger Yukawa couplings, (2) larger number of heavy quarks and (3) smaller mixing angle with standard model Higgs. We find that the required factors could be realized in the framework of two vector-like triplet quarks (VLTQs) and the resulting production c…
We examine the `diboson' excess at $\sim 2$ TeV seen by the LHC experiments in various channels. We provide a comparison of the excess significances as a function of the mass of the tentative resonance and give the signal cross sections needed to explain the excesses. We also present a survey of available theoretical explanations of the resonance, classified in three main approaches. Beyond that, we discuss methods to verify the anomaly, determining the major properties of the various surpluses and exploring how different models can be discriminated. Finally, we give a tabular summary of the n…
Recently reported diboson excesses at LHC are interpreted to be connected with heavy $WW$ resonance with weak isotopic spin 2. The resonance appears due to the wouldbe anomalous triple interaction of the weak bosons, which is defined by well-known coupling constant $λ$. We obtain estimates for the effect, which qualitatively agree with ATLAS data. Effects are predicted in inclusive production of $W^+W^+, W^+ (Z,γ), W^+ W^-, (Z,γ) (Z,γ), W^- (Z,γ), W^-W^-$ resonances with $M_R \simeq 2\,TeV$, which could be reliably checked at the upgraded LHC with $\sqrt{s}\,=\,13 TeV$. In the framework of an …
We consider a simple solution to explain the recent diboson excess observed by ATALS and CMS Collaborations in models with custodial symmetry $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \rightarrow SU(2)_c$. The $SU(2)_L$ triplet vector boson $ρ$ with mass range of $1.8 \sim 2$ TeV would be produced through the Drell-Yan process with sizable diboson decay branching to account for the excess. The other $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ bidoublet axial vector boson $a$ would cancel all deviations of electroweak obervables induced by $ρ$ even if the SM fermions mix with some heavy vector like (composite) fermions which coupl…
The ATLAS collaboration (and also CMS) has recently reported an excess over Standard Model expectations for gauge boson pair production in the invariant mass region $1.8-2.2$ TeV. In the light of these results, we argue that such signal might be the first manifestation of the production and further decay of a heavy CP-even Higgs resulting from a type-I Two Higgs Doublet Model. We demonstrate that in the presence of colored vector-like fermions, its gluon fusion production cross-section is strongly enhanced, with the enhancement depending on the color representation of the new fermion states. O…
Inspired by the recent diboson excess observed at the LHC and possible interpretation within a TeV-scale Left-Right symmetric framework, we explore its implications for low-energy experiments searching for lepton number and flavor violation. Assuming a simple Type-II seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses, we show that for the right-handed (RH) gauge boson mass and coupling values required to explain the LHC anomalies, the RH contribution to the lepton number violating process of neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) is already constrained by current experiments for relatively low-mass (MeV-Ge…
Very recently, the ATLAS and CMS collaborations reported diboson and dijet excesses above standard model expectations in the invariant mass region of 1.8 -2.0 TeV. Interpreting the diboson excess of events in a model independent fashion suggests that the vector boson pair production searches are best described by WZ or ZZ topologies, because states decaying into W^+W^- pairs are strongly constrained by semileptonic searches. Under the assumption of a low string scale, we show that both the diboson and dijet excesses can be steered by an anomalous U(1) field with very small coupling to leptons.…
We show that the excess events observed in a number of recent LHC resonance searches can be simultaneously explained within a minimal non-supersymmetric left-right inverse seesaw model for neutrino masses with $W_R$ mass around 1.9 TeV. We further show that the minimal TeV-scale particle content that leads to gauge coupling unification in this model predicts $g_R\simeq 0.51$ at the TeV-scale. The extra color-singlet, $SU(2)$-triplet fermions required for unification can be interpreted as the Dark Matter of the Universe. Future measurements of the ratio of same-sign to opposite-sign dilepton ev…
We present results from the first fully differential next-to-next-to leading order NNLO QCD computation of ZZ production, including off-shell effects, the leptonic decay and non-resonant contributions. We compare theoretical predictions to fiducial cross sections and distributions measured by ATLAS and CMS at 8 TeV and also perform a first comparison with early ATLAS measurements at 13 TeV.
In this paper we explore the possibility that recent results by ATLAS and CMS searching for heavy resonances decaying into bosons could be a first hint of a new sector of pure-gauge confining physics, possibly linked to the origin of the Higgs as a Composite Higgs. The lightest resonances (glueballs) of this new sector would be neutral, spin-zero and -two, and their behaviour would resemble that of a radion and a massive graviton of extra-dimensions. We outline how LHC8 data could be used to improve sensitivity on this scenario, as well as future characterization during the LHC13 run.
The full ATLAS Run 2 data set with time-integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$ in the diboson channels in hadronic final states is used to probe a simple model with an extended gauge sector (EGM), proposed by Altarelli et al., and often taken as a convenient benchmark by experimentalists. This model accommodates new charged $W'$ and neutral $Z'$ vector bosons with modified trilinear Standard Model gauge couplings, decaying into electroweak gauge boson pairs $WZ$ or $WW$, where $W$/$Z$ decay hadronically. Exclusion limits at the 95% C.L. on the $Z'$ and $W'$ resonance production cross section t…
Based on an $SU(2) \times SU(2) \times U(1)$ effective theory framework (aka $G221$ models), we investigate a leptophobic $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{B-L}$ model, in which the right-handed $W^\prime$ boson has the mass of around 2 TeV, and predominantly couples to the standard model quarks and the gauge-Higgs sector. This model could explain the resonant excesses near 2 TeV reported by the ATLAS collaboration in the $WZ$ production decaying into hadronic final states, and by the CMS collaboration in the $Wh$ channel decaying into $b\bar{b}\ellν$ and dijet final state. After imposing t…
Doubly charged Higgs bosons are predicted in many new physics models with an extended Higgs sector that contains a Higgs triplet field. Current experimental searches have been focusing mainly on the scenario in which the same-sign dilepton decay modes are the dominant ones. We study the scenario where the vacuum expectation value of the triplet field is sufficiently large so that the associated charged Higgs bosons decay dominantly to a pair of weak gauge bosons instead. A detailed simulation of the signal and the backgrounds is performed for the CERN Large Hadron Collider at the collision ene…
In this Letter, we study the latest bound on the mass of doubly charged Higgs bosons, $H^{\pm\pm}$, assuming that they dominantly decay into a diboson. The new bound is obtained by comparing the inclusive searches for events with a same-sign dilepton by the ATLAS Collaboration using the latest 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ data at the LHC 8 TeV run with theoretical prediction based on the Higgs triplet model with next-to-leading order QCD corrections. We find that the lower mass bound on $H^{\pm\pm}$ is about 84 GeV.
The study of electroweak boson pair production provides a powerful test of the spontaneously broken gauge symmetry of the Standard Model (SM) and can be used to search for new phenomena beyond the SM. Extra neutral vector bosons $Z'$ decaying to charged gauge vector boson pairs $W^+W^-$ are predicted in many scenarios of new physics, including models with an extended gauge sector. The diboson production allows to place stringent constraints on the $Z$-$Z'$ mixing factor $ξ$ and $Z'$ mass, $M_{Z'}$. We present the $Z'$ exclusion region in the $ξ-M_{Z'}$ plane for the first time by using data co…
We expand the previous analyses of the conformal barrier on the walking technirho for the 2 TeV diboson excesses reported by the ATLAS collaboration, with a special emphasis on the hidden local symmetry (HLS) constraints. We first show that the Standard Model (SM) Higgs Lagrangian is equivalent to the scale-invariant nonlinear chiral Lagrangian, which is further gauge equivalent to the scale-invariant HLS model, with the scale symmetry realized nonlinearly via SM Higgs as a (pseudo-) dilaton. The scale symmetry forbids the new vector boson decay to the 125 GeV Higgs plus W/Z boson, in sharp co…
The first run of the LHC showed hints of a new resonance with mass near $1.9$ TeV decaying into electroweak gauge boson pairs as well as into dijets. While Run 2 has neither confirmed nor ruled out such a resonance, it has yielded new constraints on models attempting to explain these decays. Additionally in $W'$ models where this new resonance is a charged vector boson that is a weak isospin singlet there is the potential for conflict with the electroweak precision $T$ parameter. We construct variants of a $W'$ resonance model that provide an excellent fit to both Run 1 and Run 2 data, as well…
A number of LHC resonance search channels display an excess in the invariant mass region of 1.8 - 2.0 TeV. Among them is a $3.4\,σ$ excess in the fully hadronic decay of a pair of Standard Model electroweak gauge bosons, in addition to potential signals in the $HW$ and dijet final states. We perform a model-independent cross-section fit to the results of all ATLAS and CMS searches sensitive to these final states. We then interpret these results in the context of the Left-Right Symmetric Model, based on the extended gauge group $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)'$, and show that a heavy right-ha…
Extensions of the Standard Model Higgs sector with electroweak charged scalars can possess exotic `Higgs' bosons with vanishing or suppressed couplings to Standard Model fermions. These `fermiophobic' scalars, which cannot be produced via gluon fusion, are constrained by LHC measurements of the 125 GeV Higgs boson to have a small vacuum expectation value. This implies that vector boson fusion and associated vector boson production are in general suppressed rendering conventional Higgs searches insensitive. However, Drell-Yan Higgs pair production, which is not present in the SM, can be sizeabl…
The ATLAS collaboration has reported excesses in searches for resonant diboson production decaying into hadronic final states. This deviation from the Standard Model prediction may be a signature of an extra bosonic particle having a mass of around 2 TeV with a fairly narrow width, which implies the presence of a new perturbative theory at the TeV scale. In this paper, we study interpretations of the signal and its implication to physics beyond the Standard Model. We find that the resonance could be regarded as a leptophobic vector particle, which could explain a part of the observed excesses …
A recent ATLAS search for diboson resonances and a CMS search for $eejj$ resonances which both show excesses with significance around 3 sigma have generated interest in $SU(2)_R$ gauge extensions of the Standard Model with a $W'$ mass around 2 TeV. We investigate the possibility that an $SU(2)_R$ gauge extension of the MSSM compatible with an explanation of the diboson anomaly might give rise to a significant enhancement of the Higgs mass above the MSSM tree level bound $m_{h, \text{tree}} < 90 \; \text{GeV}$ due to non-decoupling D-terms. This model contains a vector-like charge -1/3 $SU(2)_R…
We consider the possibility that the recently observed diphoton excess at $\sim 750$ GeV can be explained by the decay of a scalar particle ($φ$) to photons. If the scalar is the remnant of a symmetry-breaking sector of some new gauge symmetry, its coupling to photons can be generated by loops of the charged massive vectors of the broken symmetry. If these new $W^\prime$ vector bosons carry color, they can also generate an effective coupling to gluons. In this case the diphoton excess could be entirely explained in a simplified model containing just $φ$ and $W^\prime$. On the other hand if $W^…
We propose an interpretation of the diboson excess recently observed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations in terms of Kaluza-Klein excitations of electroweak gauge bosons stemming from a realization of a warped extra-dimensional model that is protected by a custodial symmetry. Besides accounting for the LHC diboson data, this scenario also leads to an explanation of the anomalies that have been observed in the measurements of the forward-backward asymmetries for bottom quarks at LEP and top quarks at the Tevatron.
A direct search for doubly-charged Higgs bosons $H^{\pm\pm}$ is one of the most important probe in the Higgs Triplet Model, which is motivated by generation mechanisms of tiny neutrino masses. There are two major decay modes of $H^{\pm\pm}$; i.e., the same-sign dilepton decay $H^{\pm\pm}\to\ell^\pm\ell^\pm$ and the same-sign diboson decay $H^{\pm\pm}\to W^{\pm(*)}W^{\pm(*)}$. For the case where the former decay mode is dominant, the lower limit on the mass of $H^{\pm\pm}$ has been set at about 400 GeV by ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. On the other hand, for the case where the latter decay mode …
We classify the complete set of dimension-5 operators relevant for the resonant production of a singlet of spin 0 or 2 linearly coupled to the Standard Model (SM). We compute the decay width of such states as a function of the effective couplings, and provide the matching to various well-motivated New Physics scenarios. We then investigate the possibility that one of these neutral resonances be at the origin of the excess in diboson production recently reported by the ATLAS collaboration. We perform a shape analysis of the excess under full consideration of the systematic uncertainties to extr…
The excess events reported by the ATLAS Collaboration in the $WZ$-final state, and by the CMS Collaboration in the $e^+\!e^- jj$, $Wh$ and $jj$-final states, may be induced by the decays of a heavy boson $W'$ in the 1.8-2 TeV mass range, here modelled via the larger local group $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_{B-L}$ in a non-linear dynamical Higgs scenario. The $W'$-production cross section at the 13 TeV LHC is around 700-1200 fb. This framework also predicts a heavy $Z'$ boson with a mass of 2.5-4 TeV, and some decay channels testable in the LHC Run II. We determine the cross section times …
We perform a statistical combination of the ATLAS and CMS results for the search of a heavy resonance decaying to a pair of vector bosons with the $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV datasets collected at the LHC. We take into account six searches in hadronic and semileptonic final states carried out by the two collaborations. We consider only public information provided by ATLAS and CMS in the HEPDATA database and in papers published in refereed journals. We interpret the combined results within the context of a few benchmark new physics models, such as models predicting the existence of a {\ensuremath{\mathrm{…
Precise measurements of weak vector bosons self couplings give a hint on the electroweak symmetry breaking sector. We first stress that present data from LEP and TEVATRON clearly indicate that weak bosons are self interacting. We then review the limits on the trilinear and quadrilinear couplings expected at LEP2, $e^+e^-$ linear colliders and LHC.
New neutral vector bosons $Z'$ decaying to charged gauge boson pairs $W^+W^-$ are predicted in many scenarios of new physics, including models with an extended gauge sector such as $E_6$, left-right symmetric $Z^\prime_{\rm LRS}$ and the sequential standard model $Z'_{\rm SSM}$. For these benchmark models we calculate and present theoretical expectations for different values of the $Z^\prime$ mass $M_2$ and mixing parameter $ξ$. Our results are based on the narrow width approximation which allows to make a convenient comparison of experiment to theoretical benchmark models. The diboson product…
ATLAS and CMS observe deviations from the expected background in diboson invariant mass searches of new resonances around 2 TeV. We provide a general analysis of the results in terms of spin-one resonances and find that Fermi scale composite dynamics can be the culprit. The analysis and methodology can be employed for future searches at run two of the Large Hadron Collider.
The ATLAS collaboration reported excesses at around 2 TeV in the di-boson production decaying into hadronic final states. We consider the possibility of explaining the excesses with extra gauge bosons in two simple non-Abelian extensions of the Standard Model. One is the so-called $G(221)$ models with a symmetry structure of $SU(2)_1\otimes SU(2)_2\otimes U(1)_X$ and the other is the $G(331)$ models with an extended symmetry of $SU(3)_C\otimes SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X$. The $W'$ and $Z'$ bosons emerge after the electroweak symmetry is spontaneously broken. Two patterns of symmetry breaking in the…
We show that the relatively small but coincident excesses observed around 2 TeV in the ATLAS Run 1 and Run 2 hadronic diboson searches --- when a cut on the number of tracks in the fat jets is not applied --- and the null results of all remaining high-mass diboson searches are compatible with the decay of a triboson resonance $R$ into $WZ$ plus an extra particle $X$. These decays can take place via new neutral ($Y^0$) or charged ($Y^\pm$) particles, namely $R \to Y^0 \, W$, with $Y^0 \to Z X$, or $R \to Y^\pm Z$, with $Y^\pm \to W X$. An obvious candidate for such intermediate particle is a ne…
In this paper, we discuss the signal of composite spin-1 resonances at the LHC. Motivated by the possible observation of a diboson resonance in the 8 TeV LHC data, we demonstrate that vector resonances from composite Higgs models are able to describe the data. We pay particular attention to the role played by fermion partial compositeness, which is a common feature in composite Higgs models. The parameter space that is both able to account for the diboson excess and passes electroweak precision and flavor tests is explored. Finally, we make projections for signals of such resonances at the 13 …
We present next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations including QCD and electroweak (EW) corrections for $2\ell2ν$ diboson signatures with two opposite-charge leptons and two neutrinos. Specifically, we study the processes $pp\to e^+ μ^- ν_{e}\barν_μ$ and $pp\to e^+ e^-ν\barν$, including all relevant off-shell diboson channels, $W^+W^-$, $ZZ$, $γZ$, as well as non-resonant contributions. Photon-induced processes are computed at NLO EW, and we discuss subtle differences related to the definition and the renormalisation of the coupling $α$ for processes with initial- and final-state photons. All c…
When the doubly-charged Higgs bosons $H^{\pm\pm}$ mainly decay into the same-sign dilepton, a lower bound on the mass is around 400 GeV by the current LHC data. On the other hand, no such bound has been reported by using the data at LEP and at the LHC for the case where the same-sign diboson decay $H^{\pm\pm}\to W^{\pm(*)} W^{\pm(*)}$ is dominant. We study limits on the mass for such a case by using the current experimental data. From the precise measurement of the total width of the Z boson at the LEP experiment, the mass below 43 GeV is excluded with the 95% C.L. It turns out that the result…
We conduct a model-independent effective theory analysis of hypercharged fields with various spin structures towards understanding the diboson excess found in LHC run I, as well as possible future anomalies involving $WZ$ and $WH$ modes. Within the assumption of no additional physics beyond the standard model up to the scale of the possible diboson resonance, we show that a hypercharged scalar and a spin 2 particle do not have tree-level $WZ$ and $WH$ decay channels up to dimension 5 operators, and cannot therefore account for the anomaly, whereas a hypercharged vector is a viable candidate pr…
If the Higgs boson $H(125)$ is a composite due to new strong interactions at high energy, it has spin-one partners, $ρ_H$ and $a_H$, analogous to the $ρ$ and $a_1$ mesons of QCD. These bosons are heavy, their mass determined by the strong interaction scale. The strongly interacting particles light enough for $ρ_H$ and $a_H$ to decay to are the longitudinal weak bosons $V_L = W_L,\, Z_L$ and the Higgs boson $H$. These decay signatures are consistent with resonant diboson excesses recently reported near 2 TeV by ATLAS and CMS. We calculate $σ\times BR(ρ_H \to VV) =$ few fb and $σ\times BR(a_H \t…
