The time it takes to accelerate an object from zero to a given velocity depends on the applied force and the environment. If the force ceases, it takes exactly the same time to completely decelerate. A magnetic domain wall (DW) is a topological object that has been observed to follow this behavior. Here we show that acceleration and deceleration times of chiral Neel walls driven by current are different in a system with low damping and moderate Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) exchange constant. The time needed to accelerate a DW with current via the spin Hall torque is much faster than the time it needs to decelerate once the current is turned off. The deceleration time is defined by the DM exchange constant whereas the acceleration time depends on the spin Hall torque, enabling tunable inertia of chiral DWs. Such unique feature of chiral DWs can be utilized to move and position DWs with lower current, key to the development of storage class memory devices.
We study theoretically the electronic structure of topological nodal-line semimetals. We show that, in the presence of a gap-opening spatially dependent mass term that forms a domain wall, an in-gap charged localized mode emerges at the domain wall. It turns out that such a domain wall is realized by head-to-head (or tail-to-tail) bulk electric polarizations. The localized mode has a topological origin, i.e., a topological confinement is realized, which is understood by a semiclassical topological number defined in the semiclassical momentum-real space. In contrast to previous studies, our stu…
Despite the relevance of current-induced magnetic domain wall (DW) motion for new spintronics applications, the exact details of the current-domain wall interaction are not yet understood. A property intimately related to this interaction is the intrinsic DW resistivity. Here, we investigate experimentally how the resistivity inside a DW depends on the wall width D, which is tuned using focused ion beam irradiation of Pt/Co/Pt strips. We observe the nucleation of individual DWs with Kerr microscopy, and measure resistance changes in real-time. A 1/D^2 dependence of DW resistivity is found, com…
Magnetic domain-walls (DWs) with a preferred chirality exhibit very efficient current-driven motion. Since structural inversion asymmetry (SIA) is required for their stability, the observation of chiral domain walls in highly symmetric Pt/Co/Pt is intriguing. Here, we tune the layer asymmetry in this system and observe, by current-assisted DW depinning experiments, a small chiral field which sensitively changes. Moreover, we convincingly link the observed efficiency of DW motion to the DW texture, using DW resistance as a direct probe for the internal orientation of the DW under the influence …
Spin waves are perturbations in the relative orientation of magnetic moments in a continuous magnetic system, which have been proposed as a new kind of information carrier for spin-based low power applications. For this purpose, a major obstacle to overcome is the energy-efficient excitation of coherent short wavelength spin waves and alternatives to excitation via the Oersted field of an alternating current need to be explored. Here we show, by means of micromagnetic simulations, how, in a perpendicularly magnetized thin strip, a domain wall pinned at a geometrical constriction emits spin wav…
Domain wall motion driven by ultra-short laser pulses is a prerequisite for envisaged low-power spintronics combining storage of information in magneto electronic devices with high speed and long distance transmission of information encoded in circularly polarized light. Here we demonstrate the conversion of the circular polarization of incident femtosecond laser pulses into inertial displacement of a domain wall in a ferromagnetic semiconductor. In our study we combine electrical measurements and magneto-optical imaging of the domain wall displacement with micromagnetic simulations. The optic…
The order parameter of superconducting pairs penetrating an inhomogeneous magnetic material can acquire a long range triplet component (LRTC) with non-zero spin projection. This state has been predicted and generated recently in proximity systems and Josephson junctions. We show using an analytically derived domain wall of an exchange spring how the LRTC emerges and can be tuned with the twisting of the magnetization. We also introduce a new kind of Josephson current reversal, the triplet $0-π$ transition, that can be observed in one and the same system either by tuning the domain wall or by v…
We demonstrate a fully tunable diode structure utilizing a fully suspended single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT). The diode's turn-on voltage under forward bias can be continuously tuned up to 4.3 V by controlling gate voltages, which is ~6 times the nanotube bandgap energy. Furthermore, the same device design can be configured into a backward diode by tuning the band-to-band tunneling current with gate voltages. A nanotube backward diode is demonstrated for the first time with nonlinearity exceeding the ideal diode. These results suggest that a tunable nanotube diode can be a unique building b…
We theoretically study domain wall oscillations upon the injection of a dc current through a geometrically constrained wire with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The oscillation frequency spectrum can be tuned by the injected current density, but additionally by the application of an external magnetic field independent of the power. The results of analytical calculations are supported by micromagnetic simulations based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. The simple concept of our localized steady-state oscillator might prove useful as a nanoscale microwave generator with possible applic…
Moiré structures in small-angle-twisted bilayers of two-dimensional semiconductors with a broken-symmetry interface form arrays of ferroelectric domains with periodically alternating out-of-plane polarization. Here, we propose a network theory for the tunability of such FE domain structure by applying an electric field perpendicular to the 2D crystal. Using multiscale analysis, we derive a fully parametrized string-theory-like description of the domain wall network and show that it undergoes a qualitative change, after the arcs of partial dislocation like domain walls merge (near the network n…
Topological domain walls in dual-gated gapped bilayer graphene host edge states that are gate- tunable and valley polarized. Here we predict that plasmonic collective modes can propagate along these topological domain walls even at zero bulk density, and possess a markedly different character from that of bulk plasmons. Strikingly, domain wall plasmons are extremely long-lived, with plasmon lifetimes that can be orders of magnitude larger than the transport scattering time in the bulk. While most pronounced at low temperatures, long domain wall plasmon lifetimes persist even at room temperatur…
The Dzyaloshinskii Moriya Interaction (DMI) has laid the foundation for many novel chiral structures such as Skyrmions. In most of the studies so far, the DMI is present in the whole of the magnetic layer. Here, we report our investigations on a ferromagnetic nanowire where DMI is confined to a nanoscale region. We observe that the local modulation of magnetic properties causes oscillation of domain walls under the influence of spin-transfer torque. The oscillation frequency is tunable within a few GHz, making this observation potentially useful for applications in neuromorphic computing.

We predict a mechanism to controllably manipulate domain walls in kagome antiferromagnets via a single linearly polarized spin-wave source. We show by means of atomistic spin dynamics simulations of antiferromagnets with kagome structure that the speed and direction of the domain wall motion can be regulated by only tuning the frequency of the applied spin-wave. Starting from microscopics, we establish an effective action and derive the corresponding equations of motion for the spin-wave-driven domain wall. Our analytical calculations reveal that the coupling of two spin-wave modes inside the …
Cylindrical magnetic nanowires with large transversal magnetocrystalline anisotropy have been shown to sustain non-trivial magnetic configurations resulting from the interplay of spatial confinement, exchange, and anisotropies. Exploiting these peculiar 3D spin configurations and their solitonic inhomogeneities are prospected to improve magnetization switching in future spintronics, such as power-saving magnetic memory and logic applications. Here we employ holographic vector field electron tomography to reconstruct the remanent magnetic states in CoNi nanowires with 10 nm resolution in 3D, wi…
Metamaterials present the possibility of artificially generating advanced functionalities through engineering of their internal structure. Artificial spin networks, in which a large number of nanoscale magnetic elements are coupled together, are promising metamaterial candidates that enable the control of collective magnetic behavior through tuning of the local interaction between elements. In this work, the motion of magnetic domain-walls in an artificial spin network leads to a tunable stochastic response of the metamaterial, which can be tailored through an external magnetic field and local…
We report on the time-resolved investigation of current- and field-induced domain wall motion in perpendicularly magnetized microwires exhibiting asymmetric exchange interaction by means of scanning transmission x-ray microscopy using a time step of 200 ps. Dynamical domain wall velocities on the order of 50-100 m s$^{-1}$ were observed. The improvement in the temporal resolution allowed us to observe the absence of incubation times for the motion of the domain wall, together with indications for a negligible inertia. Furthermore, we observed that, for short current and magnetic field pulses, …
Magnetic domain walls are pinned strongly by abrupt changes in magnetic anisotropy. When driven into oscillation by a spin-polarized current, locally pinned domain walls can be exploited as tunable sources of short-wavelength spin waves. Here, we develop an analytical framework and discrete Heisenberg model to describe the static and dynamic properties of pinned domain walls with a head-to-tail magnetic structure. We focus on magnetic domain walls that are pinned by 90$^\circ$ rotations of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Our model captures the domain wall response to a spin-transfer torque that …
We show that an applied charge current in a magnetic nanowire containing domain walls (DWs) results in an interaction between DWs mediated by spin-dependent interferences of the scattered carriers. The energy and torque associated with this interaction show an oscillatory behaviour as a function of the mutual DWs orientations and separations, thus affecting the DWs' arrangements and shapes. Based on the derived DWs interaction energy and torque we calculate DW dynamics and uncover potential applications of interacting DWs as a tunable nano-mechanical oscillator. We also discuss the effect of i…
