We use first principles calculations to study the electronic properties of rock salt rare earth monopnictides La$X$ ($X=$N, P, As, Sb, Bi). A new type of topological band crossing termed `linked nodal rings' is found in LaN when the small spin-orbital coupling (SOC) on nitrogen orbitals is neglected. Turning on SOC gaps the nodal rings at all but two points, which remain gapless due to $C_4$-symmetry and leads to a 3D Dirac semimetal. Interestingly, unlike LaN, compounds with other elements in the pnictogen group are found to be topological insulators (TIs), as a result of band reordering due to the increased lattice constant as well as the enhanced SOC on the pnictogen atom. These TI compounds exhibit multi-valley surface Dirac cones at three $\bar{M}$-points on the $(111)$-surface.
We present a quasiparticle interference study of clean and Mn surface-doped TaAs, a prototypical Weyl semimetal, to test the screening properties as well as the stability of Fermi arcs against Coulomb and magnetic scattering. Contrary to topological insulators, the impurities are effectively screened in Weyl semimetals. The adatoms significantly enhance the strength of the signal such that theoretical predictions on the potential impact of Fermi arcs can be unambiguously scrutinized. Our analysis reveals the existence of three extremely short, previously unknown scattering vectors. Comparison …
By means of high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, we investigate the low-energy excitation spectrum of transition-metal monopnictides hosting Weyl fermions. We observe gapped plasmonic modes in (001)-oriented surfaces of single crystals of NbAs and TaAs at 66 and 68 meV, respectively. Our findings are consistent with theory and we estimate an effective Coulomb interaction strength $α_{\rm eff}\approx0.41$ for both samples. We also demonstrate that the modification of the surface of transition-metal monopnictides by the adsorption of chemical species (in our case, oxygen and hydroc…
The rare-earth monopnictide family is attracting an intense current interest driven by its unusual extreme magnetoresistance (XMR) property and the potential presence of topologically non-trivial surface states. The experimental observation of non-trivial surface states in this family of materials are not ubiquitous. Here, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), magnetotransport, and parallel first-principles modeling, we examine the nature of electronic states in HoSb. Although we find the presence of bulk band gaps at the G and X-symmetry points of the Brillo…
Multiple line nodes in energy-band gaps are found in semimetals preserving mirror-reflection symmetry. We classify possible configurations of multiple line nodes with crossing points (crossing line nodes) under point-group symmetry. Taking the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) into account, we also classify topological phase transitions from crossing-line-node Dirac semimetals to other topological phases, e.g., topological insulators and point-node semimetals. This study enables one to find crossing-line-node semimetal materials and their behavior in the presence of SOI from the band structure in t…
Landau-level spectroscopy, the optical analysis of electrons in materials subject to a strong magnetic field, is a versatile probe of the electronic band structure and has been successfully used in the identification of novel states of matter such as Dirac electrons, topological materials or Weyl semimetals. The latter arise from a complex interplay between crystal symmetry, spin-orbit interaction and inverse ordering of electronic bands. Here, we report on unusual Landau-level transitions in the monopnictide TaP that decrease in energy with increasing magnetic field. We show that these transi…
By employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations, we performed a systematic investigation on the electronic structure of LaBi, which exhibits extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR), and is theoretically predicted to possess band anticrossing with nontrivial topological properties. Here, the observations of the Fermi-surface topology and band dispersions are similar to previous studies on LaSb [Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 127204 (2016)], a topologically trivial XMR semimetal, except the existence of a band inversion along the $Γ$-$X$ direction, with …
Weyl Semimetals (WSMs), a recently discovered topological state of matter, exhibit an electronic structure governed by linear band dispersions and degeneracy (Weyl) points leading to rich physical phenomena, which are yet to be exploited in thin film devices. While WSMs were established in the monopnictide compound family several years ago, the growth of thin films has remained a challenge. Here, we report the growth of epitaxial thin films of NbP and TaP by means of molecular beam epitaxy. Single crystalline films are grown on MgO (001) substrates using thin Nb (Ta) buffer layers, and are fou…
Topological semimetals, extending the topological classification from insulators to metals, have greatly enriched our understanding of topological states in condensed matter. This is particularly true for topological nodal-line semimetals (TNLSs). In the present paper, we identify layered materials as promising candidates for hosting TNLSs. Based on first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, we propose that layered ferromagnetic rare-earth-metal monohalides LnX (Ln=La, Gd; X=Cl, Br) exhibit long pursued topological phases. Specifically, single-layer LaX and single-layer GdX ar…
Weyl semimetals have been intensely studied as a three dimensional realization of a Dirac-like excitation spectrum where the conduction bands and valence bands touch at isolated Weyl points in momentum space. Like in graphene, this property entails various peculiar electronic properties. However, recent theoretical studies have suggested that resonant scattering from rare regions can give rise to a non-zero density of states even at charge neutrality. Here, we give a detailed account of this effect and demonstrate how the semimetallic nature is suppressed at the lowest scales. To this end, we …
Topological states of matter have been a subject of intensive studies in recent years because of their exotic properties such as the topologically protected edge and surface states. The initial studies were exclusively for electron systems. It is now known that topological states can also exist for other particles. Indeed, topologically protected edge states have already been found for phonons and photons. In spite of active searching for topological states in many fields, the studies in magnetism are relatively rare although topological states are apparently important and useful in magnonics.…
Dirac-Weyl semimetals are unique three-dimensional (3D) phases of matter with gapless electrons and novel electrodynamic properties believed to be robust against weak perturbations. Here, we unveil the crucial influence of the disorder statistics and impurity diversity in the stability of incompressible electrons in 3D semimetals. Focusing on the critical role played by rare impurity configurations, we show that the abundance of low-energy resonances in the presence of diluted random potential wells endows rare localized zero-energy modes with statistical significance, thus lifting the nodal d…
Weyl semimetals are expected to open up new horizons in physics and materials science because they provide the first realization of Weyl fermions and exhibit protected Fermi arc surface states. However, they had been found to be extremely rare in nature. Recently, a family of compounds, consisting of TaAs, TaP, NbAs and NbP was predicted as Weyl semimetal candidates. Here, we experimentally realize a Weyl semimetal state in TaP. Using photoemission spectroscopy, we directly observe the Weyl fermion cones and nodes in the bulk and the Fermi arcs on the surface. Moreover, we find that the surfac…
The half-Heusler rare-earth intermetallic GdPtBi has recently gained attention due to peculiar magnetotransport phenomena that have been associated with the possible existence of Weyl fermions, thought to arise from the crossings of spin-split conduction and valence bands. On the other hand, similar magnetotransport phenomena observed in other rare-earth intermetallics have often been attributed to the interaction of itinerant carriers with localized magnetic moments stemming from the $4f$-shell of the rare-earth element. In order to address the origin of the magnetotransport phenomena in GdPt…
Semi-Dirac semimetal is a material exhibiting linear band dispersion in one direction and quadratic band dispersion in the orthogonal direction and, therefore, hosts massless and massive fermions at the same point in the momentum space. While a number of interesting physical properties have been predicted in semi-Dirac semimetals, it has been rare to realize such materials in condensed matters. Based on the fact that some honeycomb materials are easily oxidized or chemically absorb other atoms, here, we theoretically propose an approach of modifying their band structures by covalent addition o…
We study three-dimensional Dirac fermions with weak finite-range scalar potential disorder. In the clean system, the density of states vanishes quadratically at the Dirac point. Disorder is known to be perturbatively irrelevant, and previous theoretical work has assumed that the Dirac semimetal phase, characterized by a vanishing density of states, survives at weak disorder, with a finite disorder phase transition to a diffusive metal with a non-vanishing density of states. In this paper we show that nonperturbative effects from rare regions, which are missed by conventional disorder-averaged …
Negative magnetoresistance is rare in non-magnetic materials. Recently, a negative magnetoresistance has been observed in the quantum limit of $β$-Ag$_2$Se, where only one band of Landau levels is occupied in a strong magnetic field parallel to the applied current. $β$-Ag$_2$Se is a material that host a Kramers Weyl cone with band degeneracy near the Fermi energy. Kramers Weyl cones exist at time-reversal invariant momenta in all symmorphic chiral crystals, and at a subset of these momenta, including the $Γ$ point, in non-symmorphic chiral crystals. Here, we present a theory for the negative m…
Dirac semimetal (DSM) hosts four-fold degenerate isolated band-crossing points with linear dispersion, around which the quasiparticles resemble the relativistic Dirac Fermions. It can be described by a 4 * 4 massless Dirac Hamiltonian which can be decomposed into a pair of Weyl points or gaped into an insulator. Thus, crystal symmetry is critical to guarantee the stable existence. On the contrary, by breaking crystal symmetry, a DSM may transform into a Weyl semimetal (WSM) or a topological insulator (TI). Here, by taking hexagonal LiAuSe as an example, we find that it is a starfruit shaped mu…
Weyl (WSMs) evolve from Dirac semimetals in the presence of broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) or space-inversion symmetry. The WSM phases in TaAs-class materials and photonic crystals are due to the loss of space-inversion symmetry. For TRS-breaking WSMs, despite numerous theoretical and experimental efforts, few examples have been reported. In this Article, we report a new type of magnetic semimetal Sr1-yMn1-zSb2 (y,z<0.1) with nearly massless relativistic fermion behaviour (m*=0.04-0.05m0, where m0 is the free electron mass). This material exhibits a ferromagnetic order for 304K < T < 565K…
The experimental discovery of the topological Dirac semimetal establishes a platform to search for various exotic quantum phases in real materials. ZrSiS-type materials have recently emerged as topological nodal-line semimetals where gapped Dirac-like surface states are observed. Here, we present a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of ZrGeTe, a nonsymmorphic symmetry protected Dirac semimetal. We observe two Dirac-like gapless surface states at the same $\bar X$ point of the Brillouin zone. Our theoretical analysis and first-principles calculations reveal that …
Topological Weyl semimetal (TWS), a new state of quantum matter, has sparked enormous research interest recently. Possessing unique Weyl fermions in the bulk and Fermi arcs on the surface, TWSs offer a rare platform for realizing many exotic physical phenomena. TWSs can be classified into type-I that respect Lorentz symmetry and type-II that do not. Here, we directly visualize the electronic structure of MoTe2, a recently proposed type-II TWS. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we unravel the unique surface Fermi arcs, in good agreement with our ab-initio calculations. Fr…
The ZrSiS family of compounds hosts various exotic quantum phenomena due to the presence of both topological nonsymmorphic Dirac fermions and nodal-line fermions. In this material family, the LnSbTe (Ln= lanthanide) compounds are particularly interesting owing to the intrinsic magnetism from magnetic Ln which leads to new properties and quantum states. In this work, the authors focus on the previously unexplored compound SmSbTe. The studies reveal a rare combination of a few functional properties in this material, including antiferromagnetism with possible magnetic frustration, electron correl…
The Weyl semimetal MoTe$_2$ offers a rare opportunity to study the interplay between Weyl physics and superconductivity. Recent studies have found that Se substitution can boost the superconductivity up to 1.5K, but suppress the Td structure phase that is essential for the emergence of Weyl state. A microscopic understanding of possible coexistence of enhanced superconductivity and the Td phase has not been established so far. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to study a optimally doped new superconductor MoTe$_{1.85}$Se$_{0.15}$ with bulk Tc ~ 1.5K. By means of quasiparticle in…
Spin-valley locking in the band structure of monolayers of MoS$_2$ and other group-VI dichalcogenides has attracted enormous interest, since it offers potential for valleytronic and optoelectronic applications. Such an exotic electronic state has sparsely been seen in bulk materials. Here, we report spin-valley locking in a bulk Dirac semimetal BaMnSb$_2$. We find valley and spin are inherently coupled for both valence and conduction bands in this material. This is revealed by comprehensive studies using first principle calculations, tight-binding and effective model analyses, angle-resolved p…
