With the emergence in the next few years of a new breed of high power laser facilities, it is becoming increasingly important to understand how interacting with intense laser pulses affects the bulk properties of a relativistic electron beam. A detailed analysis of the radiative cooling of electrons indicates that, classically, equal contributions to the phase space contraction occur in the transverse and longitudinal directions. In the weakly quantum regime, in addition to an overall reduction in beam cooling, this symmetry is broken, leading to significantly less cooling in the longitudinal than the transverse directions. By introducing an efficient new technique for studying the evolution of a particle distribution, we demonstrate the quantum reduction in beam cooling, and find that it depends on the distribution of energy in the laser pulse, rather than just the total energy as in the classical case.
To achieve high focal spot intensities in heavy ion fusion, the ion beam must be compressed longitudinally by factors of ten to one hundred before it is focused onto the target. The longitudinal compression is achieved by imposing an initial velocity profile tilt on the drifting beam. In this paper, the problem of longitudinal drift compression of intense charged particle beams is solved analytically for the two important cases corresponding to a cold beam, and a pressure-dominated beam, using a one-dimensional warm-fluid model describing the longitudinal beam dynamics.
We present a novel technique for studying the evolution of a particle distribution using single particle dynamics such that the distribution can be accurately reconstructed using fewer particles than existing approaches. To demonstrate this, the Landau-Lifshiftz description of radiation reaction is adapted into a semi-classical model, for which the Vlasov equation is intractable. Collision between an energetic electron bunch and high-intensity laser pulses are then compared using the two theories. Reduction in beam cooling is observed for the semi-classical case.
The spatio-temporal evolution and breaking of relativistically intense wave packets in a cold homogeneous unmagnetized plasma has been studied analytically and numerically. A general expression for phase mixing time scale as a function of amplitude of the wave packet and width of the spectrum has been derived. Results have been compared with the existing formulae in literature. It is shown that phase mixing time scale crucially depends on the relative magnitude of the amplitude and dimensionless spectral width of the wave packet. Finally we have verified our results with respect to both the am…
We study the longitudinal motion of beam particles under the action of a single resonator wave induced by the beam itself. Based on the method of multiple scales we derive a system of coupled amplitude equations for the slowly varying part of the longitudinal distribution function and for the resonator wave envelope, corresponding to an arbitrary wave number. The equation governing the slow evolution of the voltage envelope is show to be of Ginzburg-Landau type.
A hydrodynamical description of coherent instabilities that take place in the longitudinal dynamics of a charged-particle coasting beam in a high-energy accelerating machine is presented. This is done in the framework of the Madelung fluid picture provided by the Thermal Wave Model. The well known coherent instability charts in the complex plane of the longitudinal coupling impedance for monochromatic beams are recovered. The results are also interpreted in terms of the deterministic approach to modulational instability analysis usually given for monochromatic large amplitude wave train propag…
We consider the generation of a quasistatic longitudinal electric field by intense laser pulses propagating in a transparent plasma with radiation friction taken into account. For both circular and linear polarization of the driving pulse we develop a 1D analytical model of the process, which is valid in a wide range of laser and plasma parameters. We define the parameter region where radiation friction results in an essential enhancement of the longitudinal field. The amplitude and the period of the generated longitudinal wave are estimated and optimized. Our theoretical predictions are confi…
By deriving the 3/2 dimensional Hamiltonian equations for electrons in the intense laser radiation and quasi-static transverse electric and longitudinal magnetic fields, the electron heating mechanisms are examined both for low harmonic resonance of electron frequency in the static fields with the laser frequency and for high harmonic resonances where the overlapping of broadened resonances causes the stochastic heating. For both cases, the maximum electron kinetic energies, well beyond the ponderomotive scaling, depend only on a small parameter combining the laser amplitude, electrostatic fie…
High-energy-density flows through dense matter are needed for effective progress in the production of laser-driven intense sources of energetic particles and radiation, in driving matter to extreme temperatures creating state regimes relevant for planetary or stellar science as yet inaccessible at the laboratory scale, or in achieving high-gain laser-driven thermonuclear fusion. When interacting at the surface of dense (opaque) targets, intense lasers accelerate relativistic electron beams which transport a significant fraction of the laser energy into the target depth. However, the overall la…
The next few years will see next-generation high-power laser facilities (such as the Extreme Light Infrastructure) become operational, for which it is important to understand how interaction with intense laser pulses affects the bulk properties of a relativistic electron beam. At such high field intensities, we expect both radiation reaction and quantum effects to play a significant role in the beam dynamics. The resulting reduction in relative energy spread (beam cooling) at the expense of mean beam energy predicted by classical theories of radiation reaction depends only on the energy of the…
This paper presents the method for the first time to generate intense high-order optical vortices that carry orbital angular momentum in the extreme ultraviolet region. In three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation, both the reflected and transmitted light beams include high-order harmonics of the Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) mode when a linearly polarized LG laser pulse impinges on a solid foil. The mode of the generated LG harmonic scales with its order, in good agreement with our theoretical analysis. The intensity of the generated high-order vortex harmonics is close to the relativistic regio…
We propose an innovative beam cooling scheme based on laser driven plasma wakefields to address the challenge of high luminosity generation for a future linear collider. For linear colliders, beam cooling is realised by means of damping rings equipped with wiggler magnets and accelerating cavities. This scheme ensures systematic reduction of phase space volume through synchrotron radiation emission whilst compensating for longitudinal momentum loss via an accelerating cavity. In this paper, the concept of a plasma wiggler and its effective model analogous to a magnetic wiggler are introduced; …
We report here an exact analytical travelling wave solution for nonlinear electron plasma wave excited by an intense ultra-relativistic proton beam. It brings out the underlying physics of longitudinal electric field characteristics of the excited wake wave formed behind the drive beam. The results are further supplemented by a fully relativistic particle in cell (PIC) code OSIRIS in 2D geometry. The plasma and beam parameters in the simulation are chosen in conformity with experimental work and it provides us the anticipated axial and transverse electric field profiles. The investigation is f…
The excitation of electromagnetic (EM) wake waves in electron plasma by an one-dimensional bunch of charged particles has been considered in the presence of intense monochromatic circularly polarized electromagnetic (CPEM) pump wave. In the zero state (in the absence of bunch) the interaction of the pump wave with plasma is described by means of Maxwell equations and relativistic nonlinear hydrodynamic equations of cold plasma. The excitation of linear waves by one-dimensional bunch is considered on this background. It is shown that there are three types of solutions of linear equations obtain…
It is generally believed that relativistically underdense plasma is transparent for intense laser radiation. However, particle-in-cell simulations reveal abnormal laser field absorption above the intensity threshold about~$3 \times 10^{24}~\mathrm{W}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ for the wavelength of $1~μ\mathrm{m}$. Above the threshold, the further increase of the laser intensity doesn't lead to the increase of the propagation distance. The simulations take into account emission of hard photons and subsequent pair photoproduction in the laser field. These effects lead to onset of a self-sustained elect…
In this work we analyze the longitudinal instabilities of propagating acceleration structures that are driven by a relativistically intense laser at the moving plasma critical layer [1]. These instabilities affect the energy-spectra of the accelerated ion-beams in propagating critical layer acceleration schemes [2][3]. Specifically, using analytical theory and PIC simulations we look into three fundamental physical processes and their interplay that are crucial to the understanding of energy spectral control by making the laser-plasma ion accelerators stable. The interacting processes are (i) …
We propose a novel mechanism for ion acceleration based on the guided motion of electrons from a thin target. The electron motion is locked to the moving nodes of a standing wave formed by a chirped laser pulse reflected from a mirror behind the target. This provides a stable longitudinal field of charge separation, thus giving rise to chirped standing wave acceleration (CSWA) of the residual ions of the layer. We demonstrate, both analytically and numerically, that quasi-monoenergetic ion beams with energies of the order 100 MeV are feasible for realistic pulse energies of 10 J. Moreover, a s…
A new physical mechanism to achieve spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion based on the interaction of an intense circularly polarized (CP) laser beam with a plane foil is presented and studied for the first time. It has been verified by both simulation and theoretical analysis that vortex harmonics carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are generated after a relativistic CP laser beam, even a Gaussian beam, impinges normally on a plane foil. The generation of this vortex harmonics is attributed to the vortex oscillation of the plasma surface driven harmonically by the vortex longitudina…
Superponderomotive-energy electrons are observed experimentally from the interaction of an intense laser pulse with a relativistically transparent target. For a relativistically transparent target, kinetic modeling shows that the generation of energetic electrons is dominated by energy transfer within the main, classically overdense, plasma volume. The laser pulse produces a narrowing, funnel-like channel inside the plasma volume that generates a field structure responsible for the electron heating. The field structure combines a slowly evolving azimuthal magnetic field, generated by a strong …
In this paper, the effect of finite electron temperature on the space-time evolution and breaking of a large amplitude relativistically intense electron plasma wave has been studied, using a 1-D relativistic Particle-in-Cell (PIC) code. We have found that for phase velocities for which $γ_ϕ\ll 1 + \frac{k_BT_e}{mc^2}$, the wave damps within a few plasma period and essentially follows the relativistic Landau Damping rate predicted by Buti. In the opposite regime (i.e. for $γ_ϕ\gg 1 + \frac{k_BT_e}{mc^2}$) we have observed that waves propagate through the system for a long period of time and in …
In this theoretical study, the problem of self-focusing of an X-ray intense laser beam in the thermal quantum plasma is studied. Using a relativistic fluid model and taking into account the hydrodynamic pressure of degenerate electrons in the zero temperature limit, the nonlinear momentum equation of electrons is solved by means of a perturbative method and the nonlinear current density of the relativistic degenerate electrons is obtained. Saving only the third-order nonlinearity of the laser beam amplitude, a nonlinear equation describing the interaction of laser beam with the quantum plasma …
With the development of ultra intense laser technology, MeV ions from the laser foil interaction have been obtained by different mechanisms, such as target normal sheath acceleration, radiation pressure acceleration, collisionless shock acceleration, breakout afterburner, and a combination of different mechanisms. These energetic ion beams can be applied in fast ignition for inertial confinement fusion, medical therapy, and proton imaging. However, these ions are mainly accelerated in the laser propagation direction, and the ion acceleration in an azimuthal orientation is scarcely mentioned. H…
The effect of the temporal pulse shape of intense pulses on the momentum distribution of $e^+e^-$ pairs is studied using the quantum kinetic equation. Two closely resembling temporal envelopes namely, Gaussian and Sauter, keeping all the other pulse parameters the same, are considered to this end. Contrary to the common perception which can be gauged from the interchangeable use of these temporal profiles, the longitudinal momentum spectrum of the pairs created by the two pulses is found to differ significantly in all the temporal regimes. For the pulses having a few cycles of oscillations, th…
We show that under appropriate conditions the impact of a very short and intense laser pulse onto a plasma causes the expulsion of surface electrons with high energy in the direction opposite to the one of propagation of the pulse. This is due to the combined effects of the ponderomotive force and the huge longitudinal field arising from charge separation ("slingshot effect"). The effect should also be present with other states of matter, provided the pulse is sufficiently intense to locally cause complete ionization. An experimental test seems to be feasible and, if confirmed, would provide a…
