To implement a set of universal quantum logic gates based on non-Abelian geometric phases, it is a conventional wisdom that quantum systems beyond two levels are required, which is extremely difficult to fulfil for superconducting qubits, appearing to be a main reason why only single qubit gates was implemented in a recent experiment [A. A. Abdumalikov Jr \emph{et al}., Nature 496, 482 (2013)]. Here we propose to realize non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation in decoherence-free subspace on circuit QED, where one can use only the two levels in transmon qubits, a usual interaction, and a minimal resource for the decoherence-free subspace encoding. In particular, our scheme not only overcomes the difficulties encountered in previous studies, but also can still achieve considerably large effective coupling strength, such that high fidelity quantum gates can be achieved. Therefore, the present scheme makes it very promising way to realize robust holonomic quantum computation with superconducting circuits.
Quantum computation that combines the coherence stabilization virtues of decoherence-free subspaces and the fault tolerance of geometric holonomic control is of great practical importance. Some schemes of adiabatic holonomic quantum computation in decoherence-free subspaces have been proposed in the past few years. However, non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation in decoherence-free subspaces, which avoids long run-time requirement but with all the robust advantages, remains an open problem. Here, we demonstrate how to realize non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation in decoherence-free…
We present a scheme to study non-abelian adiabatic holonomies for open Markovian systems. As an application of our framework, we analyze the robustness of holonomic quantum computation against decoherence. We pinpoint the sources of error that must be corrected to achieve a geometric implementation of quantum computation completely resilient to Markovian decoherence.
We propose a feasible scheme to achieve holonomic quantum computation in a decoherence-free subspace (DFS) with trapped ions. By the application of appropriate bichromatic laser fields on the designated ions, we are able to construct two noncommutable single-qubit gates and one controlled-phase gate using the holonomic scenario in the encoded DFS.
We show how to realize, by means of non-abelian quantum holonomies, a set of universal quantum gates acting on decoherence-free subspaces and subsystems. In this manner we bring together the quantum coherence stabilization virtues of decoherence-free subspaces and the fault-tolerance of all-geometric holonomic control. We discuss the implementation of this scheme in the context of quantum information processing using trapped ions and quantum dots.
Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation in decoherence-free subspaces has attracted increasing attention recently, as it allows for high-speed implementation and combines both the robustness of holonomic gates and the coherence stabilization of decoherence-free subspaces. Since the first protocol of nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation in decoherence-free subspaces, a number of schemes for its physical implementation have been put forward. However, all previous schemes require two noncommuting gates to realize an arbitrary one-qubit gate, which doubles the exposure time of gates to er…
We study decoherence induced by stochastic squeezing control errors considering the particular implementation of Hadamard gate on optical and ion trap holonomic quantum computers. We find the fidelity for Hadamard gate and compute the purity of the final state when the control noise is modeled by Ornstein-Uhlenbeck stochastic process. We demonstrate that in contradiction to the case of the systematic control errors the stochastic ones lead to decoherence of the final state. In the small errors limit we derive a simple formulae connecting the gate fidelity and the purity of the final state.
Non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation in decoherence-free subspaces protects quantum information from control imprecisions and decoherence. For the non-collective decoherence that each qubit has its own bath, we show the implementations of two non-commutable holonomic single-qubit gates and one holonomic nontrivial two-qubit gate that compose a universal set of non-adiabatic holonomic quantum gates in decoherence-free-subspaces of the decoupling group, with an encoding rate of $\frac{N-2}{N}$. The proposed scheme is robust against control imprecisions and the non-collective decoherence, …
Non-adiabatic holonomic quantum gate in decoherence-free subspaces is of greatly practical importance due to its built-in fault tolerance, coherence stabilization virtues, and short run-time. Here we propose some compact schemes to implement two- and three-qubit controlled unitary quantum gates and Fredkin gate. For the controlled unitary quantum gates, the unitary operator acting on the target qubit is an arbitrary single-qubit gate operation. The controlled quantum gates can be directly implemented using non-adiabatic holonomy in decoherence-free subspaces and the required resource for the d…
The main obstacles to the realization of high-fidelity quantum gates are the control errors arising from inaccurate manipulation of a quantum system and the decoherence caused by the interaction between the quantum system and its environment. Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation allows for high-speed implementation of whole-geometric quantum gates, making quantum computation robust against control errors. Dynamical decoupling provides an effective method to protect quantum gates against environment-induced decoherence, regardless of collective decoherence or independent decoherence. In t…
We study decoherence induced by stochastic squeezing control errors considering the particular implementation of Hadamard gate on optical and ion trap holonomic quantum computers. We analytically obtain both the purity of the final state and the fidelity for Hadamard gate when the control noise is modeled by Ornstein-Uhlenbeck stochastic process. We demonstrate the purity and the fidelity oscillations depending on the choice of the initial superimposed state. We derive a linear formulae connecting the gate fidelity and the purity of the final state.
Holonomic quantum computation (HQC) may not show its full potential in quantum speedup due to the prerequisite of a long coherent runtime imposed by the adiabatic condition. Here we show that the conventional HQC can be dramatically accelerated by using external control fields, of which the effectiveness is exclusively determined by the integral of the control fields in the time domain. Remarkably this control scheme can be realized with net zero energy cost and it is fault-tolerant against fluctuation and noise, significantly relaxing the experimental constraints. We demonstrate how to realiz…
We show that multidimensional Zeno effect combined with non-holonomic control allows to efficiently protect quantum systems from decoherence by a method similar to classical coding. Contrary to the conventional approach, our method is applicable to arbitrary error-inducing Hamiltonians and general quantum systems. We also propose algorithms of finding encoding that approaches the Hamming upper bound along with methods of practical realizations of the encodings. Two new codes protecting 2 information qubits out of 7 and 4 information qubits out of 9 against a single error with arbitrarily small…
Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation~(NHQC) provides an essential way to construct robust and high-fidelity quantum gates due to its geometric features. However, NHQC is more sensitive to the decay and dephasing errors than conventional dynamical gate since it requires an ancillary intermediate state. Here, we utilize the Hamiltonian reverse engineering technique to study the influence of the intermediate state-decoherence on the NHQC gate fidelity, and propose the novel schemes to construct the arbitrary single-qubit holonomic gate and nontrivial two-qubit holonomic gate with high fidel…
Obtaining high-fidelity and robust quantum gates is the key for scalable quantum computation, and one of the promising ways is to implement quantum gates using geometric phases, where the influence of local noises can be greatly reduced. To obtain robust quantum gates, we here propose a scheme for quantum manipulation by combining the geometric phase approach with the dynamical correction technique, where the imperfection control induced X-error can be greatly suppressed. Moreover, to be robust against the decoherence effect and the randomized qubit-frequency shift Z-error, our scheme is also …
Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation uses non-Abelian geometric phases to implement a universal set of quantum gates that are robust against control imperfections and decoherence. Until now, a number of three-level-based schemes of nonadiabatic holonomic computation have been put forward, and several of them have been experimentally realized. However, all these works are based on the same class of nonadiabatic paths, which originates from the first nonadiabatic holonomic proposal. Here, we propose a universal set of nonadiabatic holonomic gates based on an extended class of nonadiabatic …
By using transitionless quantum driving algorithm (TQDA), we present an efficient scheme for the shortcuts to the holonomic quantum computation (HQC). It works in decoherence-free subspace (DFS) and the adiabatic process can be speeded up in the shortest possible time. More interestingly, we give a physical implementation for our shortcuts to HQC with nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamonds dispersively coupled to a whispering-gallery mode microsphere cavity. It can be efficiently realized by controlling appropriately the frequencies of the external laser pulses. Also, our scheme has good scalabi…
High-fidelity quantum gates are essential for large-scale quantum computation, which can naturally be realized in a noise-resilient way. Geometric manipulation and decoherence-free subspace encoding are promising ways toward robust quantum computation. Here, by combining the advantages of both strategies, we propose and experimentally realize universal holonomic quantum gates in both a singleloop scheme and a composite scheme, based on nonadiabatic and non-Abelian geometric phases, in a decoherence-free subspace with nuclear magnetic resonance. Our experiment uses only two-body resonant spin-s…
Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation has robust feature in suppressing control errors because of its holonomic feature. However, this kind of robust feature is challenged since the usual way of realizing nonadiabatic holonomic gates introduces errors due to systematic errors in the control parameters. To resolve this problem, we here propose a composite scheme to realize nonadiabatic holonomic gates. Our scheme can suppress systematic errors while preserving holonomic robustness. It is particularly useful when the evolution period is shorter than the coherence time. We further show that …
The implementation of holonomic quantum computation on superconducting quantum circuits is challenging due to the general requirement of controllable complicated coupling between multilevel systems. Here we solve this problem by proposing a scalable circuit QED lattice with simple realization of a universal set of nonadiabatic holonomic quantum gates. Compared with the existing proposals, we can achieve both the single and two logical qubit gates in an tunable and all-resonant way through a hybrid transmon-transmission-line encoding of the logical qubits in the decoherence-free subspaces. This…
Quantum state manipulation with gates based on geometric phases acquired during cyclic operations promises inherent fault-tolerance and resilience to local fluctuations in the control parameters. Here we create a general non-Abelian and non-adiabatic holonomic gate acting in the $(\ket{0},\ket{2})$ subspace of a three-level transmon fabricated in a fully coplanar design. Experimentally, this is realized by simultaneously coupling the first two transitions by microwave pulses with amplitudes and phases defined such that the condition of parallel transport is fulfilled. We demonstrate the creati…
We present a nonlocal construction of universal gates by means of holonomic (geometric) quantum teleportation. The effect of the errors from imperfect control of the classical parameters, the looping variation of which builds up holonomic gates, is investigated. Additionally, the influence of quantum decoherence on holonomic teleportation used as a computational primitive is studied. Advantages of the holonomic implementation with respect to control errors and dissipation are presented.
Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation has attracted increasing interest because of its robustness. In this paper, based on the shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA), we propose a scheme to construct a three-qubit nonadiabatic holonomic gate in a cavity quantum electrodynamics system. In the scheme, the three-qubit holonomic gate is implemented in a single step. Besides, numerical simulations show that the constructed holonomic quantum gate holds the characteristics of high-fidelity, decoherence-resistance and error-immunity.
Although geometric phases in quantum evolution were historically overlooked, their active control now stimulates strategies for constructing robust quantum technologies. Here, we demonstrate arbitrary single-qubit holonomic gates from a single cycle of non-adiabatic evolution, eliminating the need to concatenate two separate cycles. Our method varies the amplitude, phase, and detuning of a two-tone optical field to control the non-Abelian geometric phase acquired by a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond over a coherent excitation cycle. We demonstrate the enhanced robustness of detuned gates to…
Holonomic quantum computation uses non-Abelian geometric phases to realize error resilient quantum gates. Nonadiabatic holonomic gates are particularly suitable to avoid unwanted decoherence effects, as they can be performed at high speed. By letting the computational system interact with a structured environment, we show that the scope of error resilience of nonadiabatic holonomic gates can be widened to include systematic parameter errors. Our scheme maintains the geometric properties of the evolution and results in an environment-assisted holonomic quantum map that can mimic the effect of a…
Geometric phases are an interesting resource for quantum computation, also in view of their robustness against decoherence effects. We study here the effects of the environment on a class of one-qubit holonomic gates that have been recently shown to be characterized by "optimal" working times. We numerically analyze the behavior of these optimal points and focus on their robustness against noise.
Quantum computation based on geometric phase is generally believed to be more robust against certain errors or noises than the conventional dynamical strategy. However, the gate error caused by the decoherence effect is inevitable, and thus faster gate operations are highly desired. Here, we propose a nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation (NHQC) scheme with detuned interactions on $Δ$-type three-level system, which combines the time-optimal control technique with the time-independent detuning adjustment to further accelerate universal gate operations, {so that the gate-time can be greatly…
Adiabatic quantum gate implementation generally takes longer time, which is disadvantageous in view of decoherence. In this report we implement several essential one-qubit quantum gates nonadiabatically by making use of a dynamical invariant associated with a Hamiltonian. Moreover we require that these gates be holonomic, that is, the dynamical phases associated with the gates vanish. Our implementation is based on our recent work [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 83, 034001 (2014)] and the gate parameters required for the implementations are found by numerical optimization.
A simplified Bogoliubov transform reduces a fully-interacting many-fermion spin-1/2 system-plus-environment to a more tractable many-to-one variant. The transform additionally yields exact solutions for bosonic multi-particle interactions sans the approximation introduced by using discrete time steps to deal with quantum parallelism. The decohering effect of relatively general finite environments is therewith modeled and compared to the decohering effect of an infinite environmental "bath." The anti-symmetric singlet state formed by two maximally-entangled two-state particles is shown to be in…
The main challenges in achieving high-fidelity quantum gates are to reduce the influence of control errors caused by imperfect Hamiltonians and the influence of decoherence caused by environment noise. To overcome control errors, a promising proposal is nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation, which has attracted much attention in both theories and experiments. While the merit of holonomic operations resisting control errors has been well exploited, an important issue following is how to shorten the evolution time needed for realizing a holonomic gate so as to avoid the influence of environ…
We introduce a generalized method of holonomic quantum computation (HQC) based on encoding in subsystems. As an application, we propose a scheme for applying holonomic gates to unencoded qubits by the use of a noisy ancillary qubit. This scheme does not require initialization in a subspace since all dynamical effects factor out as a transformation on the ancilla. We use this approach to show how fault-tolerant HQC can be realized via 2-local Hamiltonians with perturbative gadgets.
A cavity QED implementation of the non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation in decoherence-free subspaces is proposed with nitrogen-vacancy centers coupled commonly to the whispering-gallery mode of a microsphere cavity, where a universal set of quantum gates can be realized on the qubits. In our implementation, with the assistant of the appropriate driving fields, the quantum evolution is insensitive to the cavity field state, which is only virtually excited. The implemented non-adiabatic holonomies, utilizing optical transitions in the Λ type of three-level configuration of the nitrogen-v…
Among existing approaches to holonomic quantum computing, the adiabatic holonomic quantum gates (HQGs) suffer errors due to decoherence, while the non-adiabatic HQGs either require additional Hilbert spaces or are difficult to scale. Here, we report a systematic, scalable approach based on dynamical invariants to realize HQGs without using additional Hilbert spaces. While presenting the theoretical framework of our approach, we design and experimentally evaluate single-qubit and two-qubits HQGs for the nuclear magnetic resonance system. The single-qubit gates acquire average fidelity 0.9972 by…
A three-level system can be used in a $Λ$-type configuration in order to construct a universal set of quantum gates through the use of non-Abelian non-adiabatic geometrical phases. Such construction allows for high-speed operation times which diminish the effects of decoherence. This might be, however, accompanied by a breakdown of the validity of the rotating wave approximation (RWA) due to the comparable time scale between counter-rotating terms and the pulse length, which greatly affects the dynamics. Here, we investigate the trade-off between dissipative effects and the RWA validity, obtai…
Quantum superpositions can be used for parallel information processing, but only if protected against decoherence. A two-particle four-state system may have two-dimensional subspaces that are partially or completely decoherence-free, e.g., the symmetric triplet state as an example of the former, the anti-symmetric singlet state of the latter. By extension, a multiparticle system that in the laboratory basis is plagued by decoherence may in some other basis exhibit the symmetries that yield such decoherence-free subspaces (DFS's). Fully-interacting many-fermion spin 1/2 networks may be mathemat…
Among the many proposals for the realization of a quantum computer, holonomic quantum computation (HQC) is distinguished from the rest in that it is geometrical in nature and thus expected to be robust against decoherence. Here we analyze the realization of various quantum gates by solving the inverse problem: Given a unitary matrix, we develop a formalism by which we find loops in the parameter space generating this matrix as a holonomy. We demonstrate for the first time that such a one-qubit gate as the Hadamard gate and such two-qubit gates as the CNOT gate, the SWAP gate and the discrete F…
Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation has received increasing attention due to its robustness against control errors as well as high-speed realization. The original protocol of nonadiabatic holonomic one-qubit gates has been experimentally demonstrated with superconducting transmon qutrit. However, the original protocol requires two noncommuting gates to realize an arbitrary one-qubit gate, which doubles the exposure time of gates to error sources and therefore makes the gates vulnerable to environment-induced decoherence. Single-shot protocol was subsequently proposed to realize an arbit…
The efficient single photon emission capabilities of quantum dot molecules position them as promising platforms for quantum information processing. Furthermore, quantum dot molecules feature a "decoherence-free" subspace that enables spin qubits with long coherence time. To efficiently read out the spin state within this subspace requires optically cycling isolated transitions that originate from a triplet manifold within the quantum dot molecule. We propose and theoretically study a two-stage spin readout protocol within this decoherence-free subspace that allows single-shot readout performan…
It has been shown that a Weyl point in a superconducting nanostructure may give rise to a Weyl disk where two quantum states are almost degenerate in a 2D manifold in the parametric space. This opens up the possibility of a holonomic quantum manipulation: a transformation of the wave function upon adiabatic change of the parameters within the degenerate manifold. In this paper, we investigate in detail the opportunities for holonomic manipulation in Weyl disks. We compute the connection at the manifold in quasiclassical approximation to show it is Abelian and can be used for a phase gate. To p…
The adiabatic theorem and "shortcuts to adiabaticity" for the adiabatic dynamics of time-dependent decoherence-free subspaces are explored in this paper. Starting from the definition of the dynamical stable decoherence-free subspaces, we show that, under a compact adiabatic condition, the quantum state follows time-dependent decoherence-free subspaces (the adiabatic decoherence free subspaces) into the target subspace with extremely high purity, even though the dynamics of the quantum system may be non-adiabatic. The adiabatic condition mentioned in the adiabatic theorem is very similar with t…
We present a detailed analysis of decoherence free subspaces and develop a rigorous theory that provides necessary and sufficient conditions for dynamically stable decoherence free subspaces. This allows us to identify a special class of decoherence free states which rely on incoherent generation of coherences. We provide examples of physical systems that support such states. Our approach employs Markovian master equations and applies primarily to finite-dimensional quantum systems.
We propose a new approach to the implementation of quantum gates in which decoherence during the gate operations is strongly reduced. This is achieved by making use of an environment induced quantum Zeno effect that confines the dynamics effectively to a decoherence-free subspace.
We propose and analyse a robust quantum state transfer protocol by the use of a combination of coherent quantum coupling and decoherence-free subspaces in a coupled quantum spin chain. Under decoherence, an arbitrary unknown quantum state embedded in a decoherence-free subspace can be perfectly transferred through a noisy channel being weakly coupled to two end registers. The method protects quantum information from both the channel noise and the environmental decoherence. A special case of utilizing two physical qubits to encode one logical qubit is considered as an example and the robustness…
We investigate an all-out optical setup allowing for generation of non-Abelian geometric phases on its large degenerate eigenspaces. The proposal has the form of an M -pod system and can be implemented in terms of integrated photonic waveguide structures. We show that by injecting a larger number of photons into the optical setup, the degeneracy of eigenspaces scales rapidly. After studying the spectral properties of our system for the general case, we show how arbitrary U(4) transformations can be generated on the dark subspace of an optical tripod filled with two photons. Moreover, a degener…
We study a model of a quantum spin register interacting with an environment of spin particles in quantum-measurement limit. In the limit of collective decoherence we obtain the form of state vectors that constitute high-dimensional decoherence-free subspaces (DFS). In a more general setting we present sufficient and necessary conditions for existence of low-dimensional DFSs that can be used to construct subspaces of higher dimension.
Quantum Fourier transform is of primary importance in many quantum algorithms. In order to eliminate the destructive effects of decoherence induced by couplings between the quantum system and its environment, we propose a robust scheme for quantum Fourier transform over the intrinsic decoherence-free subspaces. The scheme is then applied to the circuit design of quantum Fourier transform over quantum networks under collective decoherence. The encoding efficiency and possible improvements are also discussed.
A fundamental requirement of quantum information processing is the protection from the adverse effects of decoherence and noise. Decoherence-free subspaces and geometric processing are important steps of quantum information protection. Here, we provide a new experimentally feasible scheme to combine decoherence-free subspaces with nonadiabatic geometric manipulations to attain a universal quantum computation. The proposed scheme is different from previous proposals and is based on the typical XY interaction coupling, which can be set up in various nano-engineered systems and therefore open up …
We study a quantum repeater which is based on decoherence free quantum gates recently proposed by Klein et al. [Phys. Rev. A 73, 012332 (2006)]. A number of operations on the decoherence free subspace in this scheme makes use of an ancilla qubit, which undergoes dephasing and thus introduces decoherence to the system. We examine how this decoherence affects entanglement swapping and purification as well as the performance of a quantum repeater. We compare the decoherence free quantum repeater with a quantum repeater based on qubits that are subject to decoherence and show that it outperforms t…
Two initially correlated coherent states, each interacting with its own independent dissipative environment exhibit a sudden transition from classical to quantum decoherence. This change in the dynamics is a turning point in the decoherence, in the sense that depending on the average number of photons of each cavity, decoherence can even be suppressed. Indeed, the quantum state is time-independent for a time span in the mesoscopic regime, revealing a decoherence-free subspace. Furthermore, the absence of decoherence is manifested in the apparition of a metastable pointer state basis.
We show how to use decoherence-free subspaces over collective-noise quantum channels to convey classical information in perfect secrecy. We argue that codes defined over decoherence-free subspaces are codes for quantum wiretap channels in which the gain of information by a non-authorized receiver is zero. We also show that if some symmetry conditions are guaranteed, the maximum rate on which these secret communications take place is equal to the Holevo-Schumacher-Westmoreland capacity of the quantum channel.
We propose a decoherence-free subspaces (DFS) scheme to realize scalable quantum computation with trapped ions. The spin-dependent Coulomb interaction is exploited, and the universal set of unconventional geometric quantum gates is achieved in encoded subspaces that are immune from decoherence by collective dephasing. The scalability of the scheme for the ion array system is demonstrated, either by an adiabatic way of switching on and off the interactions, or by a fast gate scheme with comprehensive DFS encoding and noise decoupling techniques.
Coherence in an open quantum system is degraded through its interaction with a bath. This decoherence can be avoided by restricting the dynamics of the system to special decoherence-free subspaces. These subspaces are usually constructed under the assumption of spatially symmetric system-bath coupling. Here we show that decoherence-free subspaces may appear without spatial symmetry. Instead, we consider a model of system-bath interactions in which to first order only multiple-qubit coupling to the bath is present, with single-qubit system-bath coupling absent. We derive necessary and sufficien…
We consider a universal set of quantum gates encoded within a perturbed decoherence-free subspace of four physical qubits. Using second-order perturbation theory and a measuring device modeled by an infinite set of harmonic oscillators, simply coupled to the system, we show that continuous observation of the coupling agent induces inhibition of the decoherence due to spurious perturbations. We thus advance the idea of protecting or even creating a decoherence-free subspace for processing quantum information.
