We assess the fragmentation of strange quark matter in astrophysical events, showing that the application of statistical multifragmentation models suggests that most of the fragments (strangelets) should belong to an unstable baryon number $A$. While there are some caveats to be addressed, the flux of strangelets onto the Earth could be orders of magnitude lower than previous estimates, with negative prospects for the ongoing search experiments.
The conjecture of Bodmer-Witten-Terazawa suggesting a form of quark matter (Strange Quark Matter) as the ground state of hadronic interactions has been studied in laboratory and astrophysical contexts by a large number of authors. If strange stars exist, some violent events involving these compact objects, such as mergers and even their formation process, might eject some strange matter into the interstellar medium that could be detected as a trace signal in the cosmic ray flux. To evaluate this possibility, it is necessary to understand how this matter in bulk would fragment in the form of st…
Determination of the baryon number (or mass) distribution of the strangelets, that may fragment out of the warm and excited strange quark matter (SQM) ejected in the merger of strange stars (SSs) in compact binary stellar systems of the Galaxy, is attempted by using a statistical disassembly model (SMM). Finite mass of strange quarks is taken into account in the analysis. Strangelet charge and the resulting Coulomb correction are included to get a plausible mass distribution of galactic strangelets at their source.
This thesis aims to study how amending certain astrophysical observable of quark stars due to presence of magnetic field. To do this we need to obtain Equation of State (EOS) and consider the stability of Strange Quark Matter (made up of quarks u, d and s) cold dense and magnetized in stellar equilibrium (beta equilibrium, conservation of the baryonic number and charge neutrality). We will work using the phenomenological MIT Bag model. The stability of the Magnetized Strange Quark Matter (MSQM) is studied taking into account the variation of parameters from the model: s quark mass, baryonic de…
Determination of baryon number (or mass) distribution of the strangelets, that may fragment out of the warm and excited strange quark matter ejected in the merger of strange stars in compact binary stellar systems in the Galaxy, is attempted here by using a statistical disassembly model. Finite mass of strange quarks is taken into account in the analysis. Resulting charges of the strangelets and the corresponding Coulomb corrections are included to get a plausible size distribution of those strangelets as they are produced in binary stellar mergers thus getting injected in the Galaxy. From thi…
Explosive astrophysical systems, such as supernovae or compact star binary mergers, provide conditions where strange quark matter can appear. The high degree of isospin asymmetry and temperatures of several MeV in such systems may cause a transition to the quark phase already around saturation density. Observable signals from the appearance of quark matter can be predicted and studied in astrophysical simulations. As input in such simulations, an equation of state with an integrated quark matter phase transition for a large temperature, density and proton fraction range is required. Additional…
Compact stars (CS) are stellar remnants of massive stars. Inside CSs the density is so high that matter is in subatomic form composed of nucleons. With increase of density of matter towards the centre of the objects other degrees of freedom like hyperons, heavier non-strange baryons, meson condensates may appear. Not only that at higher densities, the nucleons may get decomposed into quarks and form deconfined strange quark matter (SQM). If it is so then CSs may contain SQM in the core surrounded by nucleonic matter forming hybrid stars (HSs). However, the nature and composition of matter insi…
The description of the heavy meson production at large energies and forward rapidities at the LHC is fundamental to derive realistic predictions of the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux at the IceCube Observatory. In particular, the prompt tau neutrino flux is determined by the decay of $D_s$ mesons produced in cosmic ray - air interactions at high energies and large values of the Feynman - $x_F$ variable. Recent data from the LHCb Collaboration indicate a production asymmetry for $D_s^+$ and $D_s^-$ mesons, which cannot be explained in terms of the standard modelling of the hadronization proce…
We argue that ultrahigh energy cosmic ray collisions in the Earth atmosphere can probe the strange quark density of the nucleon. These collisions have center-of-mass energies \agt 10^{4.6} A GeV, where A \geq 14 is the nuclear baryon number. We hypothesize the formation of a deconfined thermal fireball which undergoes a sudden hadronization. At production the fireball has a very high matter density and consists of gluons and two flavors of light quarks (u,d). Because the fireball is formed in the baryon-rich projectile fragmentation region, the high baryochemical potential damps the production…
Droplets of absolutely stable strange quark matter (strangelets) immersed in a lepton background may be the energetically preferred composition of strange star crusts and of the interior of a new class of stars known as strangelet dwarfs. In this work we calculate the surface tension $σ$ and the curvature coefficient $γ$ of charged strangelets as a function of the baryon number density, the temperature, the chemical potential of trapped neutrinos, the strangelet size, the electric potential and the electric charge at their boundary. Strange quark matter in chemical equilibrium and with global …
Inspired by various astrophysical phenomenons, it is suggested that pulsar-like compact stars are comprised entirely of strangeons (quark-clusters with three-light-flavor symmetry) and a small amount of electrons. In order to better constrain the properties of strangeon stars, we propose a linked bag model to describe the condensed matter by the strong interaction (i.e., strong condensed matter) in both 2-flavoured (nucleons) and 3-flavoured (hyperons, strangeons, etc.) scenarios. The model parameters are calibrated to reproduce the saturation properties of nuclear matter, which are later appl…
We investigate the properties of stars participating in double compact star merger events considering interacting model of stable strange quark matter. We model the matter making it compatible with the recent astrophysical observations of compact star mass-radius and gravitational wave events. In this context we consider modified MIT bag model and vector bag model with and without self interaction. We find new upper bound on tidal deformability of $1.4~M_\odot$ strange star corresponding to the upper bound of effective tidal deformability inferred from gravitational wave event. Range of compac…
The strange quark matter under strong magnetic fields and finite temperatures is studied in the framework of the MIT Bag model. Matter under such conditions is believed to be present in the core of dense astrophysical objects, like Neutron Stars and more exotic compact objects like Quark Stars. In this study, the anisotropy of the pressure due to the presence of a strong magnetic field is taken into account and a temperature-dependent equation of state is obtained. In the strong field regime, the behavior of the transversal pressure suggests a transversal collapse of the quark and electron gas…
We study the partial fragmentation of a strange quark star into strangelets during the process of merger of two strange quark stars. We discuss the fate of the fragments considering their possible evaporation into nucleons. We show that only a rather small amount of large size strangelets, ejected from the spiral arms in the post-merger, survives a total evaporation into nucleons. In this way we demonstrate that: 1) the density of strangelets in the galaxy is too low to trigger the conversion of all neutron stars into strange quark stars and it allows the co-existence of both types of compact …
We study the properties of strange quark stars by employing a 3-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with both scalar-isovector and vector-isovector interactions. Using the constraint on the vector-isoscalar interaction strength obtained from the elliptic flow splitting between particles and their antiparticles in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, we investigate the dependence of the properties of strange quark stars on the vector-isovector and the scalar-isovector interactions, and compare the results with the state-of-art astrophysical constraints on the compact star radius and mass as well as i…
The nature of pulsar-like compact stars is essentially a central question of the fundamental strong interaction (explained in quantum chromo-dynamics) at low energy scale, the solution of which still remains a challenge though tremendous efforts have been tried. This kind of compact objects could actually be strange quark stars if strange quark matter in bulk may constitute the true ground state of the strong-interaction matter rather than Fe^56 (the so-called Witten's conjecture). From astrophysical points of view, however, it is proposed that strange cluster matter could be absolutely stable…
It is shown that strange quark matter (SQM) objects, stars, and planets, can very efficiently convert the mechanical energy into hadronic energy when they oscillate. This is because the mass density at the edge of SQM objects, $ρ_0{=}4.7{\times}10^{14}\frac{\mathrm{g}}{\mathrm{cm}^3}$, is the critical density below which SQM is unstable with respect to decay into photons, hadrons, and leptons. We consider here radial oscillations of SQM objects that could be induced in stellar or planetary systems where tidal interactions are ubiquitous. Oscillations of $0.1\%$ radius amplitude already result …
Some recent developments concerning the role of strange quark matter for astrophysical systems and the QCD phase transition in the early universe are addressed. Causality constraints of the soft nuclear equation of state as extracted from subthreshold kaon production in heavy-ion collisions are used to derive an upper mass limit for compact stars. The interplay between the viscosity of strange quark matter and the gravitational wave emission from rotation-powered pulsars are outlined. The flux of strange quark matter nuggets in cosmic rays is put in perspective with a detailed numerical invest…
We investigate the possibility that the low mass companion of the black hole in the source of GW190814 was a strange quark star. This possibility is viable within the so-called two-families scenario in which neutron stars and strange quark stars coexist. Strange quark stars can reach the mass range indicated by GW190814, $M\sim (2.5-2.67) M_\odot$ due to a large value of the adiabatic index, without the need for a velocity of sound close to the causal limit. Neutron stars (actually hyperonic stars in the two-families scenario) can instead fulfill the presently available astrophysical and nucle…
