We present a new type of transmon split-junction qubit which can be tuned by Meissner screening currents in the adjacent superconducting film electrodes. The best detected relaxation time ($T_1$) was of the order of 50 $μ$s and the dephasing time ($T_2$) about 40 $μ$s. The achieved period of oscillation with magnetic field was much smaller than in usual SQUID-based transmon qubits, thus a strong effective field amplification has been realized. This Meissner qubit allows an efficient coupling to superconducting vortices. We present a quantitative analysis of the radiation-free energy relaxation in qubits coupled to Abrikosov vortices. The observation of coherent quantum oscillations provides strong evidence that vortices can exist in coherent quantum superpositions of different position states. According to our suggested model, the wave function collapse is defined by Caldeira-Leggett dissipation associated with viscous motion of the vortex cores.
Novel qubits with intrinsic noise protection constitute a promising route for improving the coherence of quantum information in superconducting circuits. However, many protected superconducting qubits exhibit relatively low transition frequencies, which could make their integration with conventional transmon circuits challenging. In this work, we propose and study a scheme for entangling a tunable transmon with a Cooper-pair parity-protected qubit, a paradigmatic example of a low-frequency protected qubit that stores quantum information in opposite Cooper-pair parity states on a superconductin…
Building a scalable quantum computer requires developing appropriate models to understand and verify its complex quantum dynamics. We focus on superconducting quantum processors based on transmons for which full numerical simulations are already challenging at the level of qubytes. It is thus highly desirable to develop accurate methods of modeling qubit networks that do not rely solely on numerical computations. Using systematic perturbation theory to large orders in the transmon regime, we derive precise analytic expressions of the transmon parameters. We apply our results to the case of par…
We characterize highly coherent transmon qubits fabricated with a direct-write photolithography system. Multi-layer evaporation and oxidation allows us to change the critical current density by reducing the effective tunneling area and increasing the barrier thickness. Surface treatments before resist application and again before evaporation result in high coherence devices. With optimized surface treatments we achieve energy relaxation $T_1$ times in excess of $80\ μ$s for three dimensional transmon qubits with Josephson junction lithographic areas of 2 $μ\mathrm{m}^2$.
In this experiment, we couple a superconducting Transmon qubit to a high-impedance $645\ Ω$ microwave resonator. Doing so leads to a large qubit-resonator coupling rate $g$, measured through a large vacuum Rabi splitting of $2g\simeq 910$ MHz. The coupling is a significant fraction of the qubit and resonator oscillation frequencies $ω$, placing our system close to the ultra-strong coupling regime ($\bar{g}=g/ω=0.071$ on resonance). Combining this setup with a vacuum-gap Transmon architecture shows the potential of reaching deep into the ultra-strong coupling $\bar{g} \sim 0.45$ with Transmon q…
We analyze the coupling of two qubits via an epitaxial semiconducting junction. In particular, we consider three configurations that include pairs of transmons or gatemons as well as gatemon-like two qubits formed by an epitaxial four-terminal junction. These three configurations provide an electrical control of the interaction between the qubits by applying voltage to a metallic gate near the semiconductor junction and can be utilized to naturally realize a controlled-Z gate (CZ). We calculate the fidelity and timing for such CZ gate. We demonstrate that in the absence of decoherence, the CZ …
On-demand creation of entanglement between distant qubits is a necessary ingredient for distributed quantum computation. We propose an entanglement scheme that allows for single-shot deterministic entanglement creation by detecting a single photon passing through a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with one transmon qubit in each arm. The entanglement production essentially relies on the fact that superconducting microwave structures allow to achieve strong coupling between the qubit and the photon. By detecting the photon via a photon counter, a parity measurement is implemented and the wave functi…
Majorana zero modes have been attracting considerable attention because of their prospective applications in fault-tolerant topological quantum computing. In recent years, some schemes have been proposed to detect and manipulate Majorana zero modes using superconducting qubits. However, manipulating and reading the Majorana zero modes must be kept in the time window of quasiparticle poisoning. In this work, we study the problem of quasiparticle poisoning in a split transmon qubit containing hybrid Josephson junctions involving Majorana zero modes. We show that Majorana coupling will cause pari…
Hybrid devices based on the superconducting qubits have emerged as a promising platform for controlling the quantum states of macroscopic resonators. The nonlinearity added by a qubit can be a valuable resource for such control. Here we study a hybrid system consisting of a mechanical resonator longitudinally coupled to a transmon qubit. The qubit readout can be done by coupling to a readout mode like in c-QED setup. The coupling between the mechanical resonator and transmon qubit can be implemented by modulation of the SQUID inductance. In such a tri-partite system, we analyze the steady-stat…
Superconducting transmon qubits are of great interest for quantum computing and quantum simulation. A key component of quantum chemistry simulation algorithms is breaking up the evolution into small steps, which naturally leads to the need for non-maximally entangling, arbitrary CPHASE gates. Here we design such microwave-based gates using an analytically solvable approach leading to smooth, simple pulses. We use the local invariants of the evolution operator in $SU(4)$ to develop a method of constructing pulse protocols, which allows for the continuous tuning of the phase. We find CPHASE fide…
Silicon-Germanium (SiGe) is a material that possesses a multitude of applications ranging from transistors to eletro-optical modulators and quantum dots. The diverse properties of SiGe also make it attractive to implementations involving superconducting quantum computing. Here we demonstrate the fabrication of transmon quantum bits on SiGe layers and investigate the microwave loss properties of SiGe at cryogenic temperatures and single photon microwave powers. We find relaxation times of up to 100 $μ$s, corresponding to a quality factor Q above 4 M for large pad transmons. The high Q values ob…
Superconducting qubits are resonant absorbers of pair-breaking radiation. The metal pads that form the qubit capacitance support standing wave modes at frequencies of order 100~GHz; these modes are strongly coupled to free-space impedance through their electric dipole moment. While the antenna mode of the 3D transmon qubit is easily seen to be a resonant dipole, other 2D qubit types can be understood as the aperture duals of wire loop antennas or folded dipoles. For typical Josephson junction parameters, the junction provides a reasonable conjugate match to the fundamental antenna mode. We cal…
Superconducting transmon qubits comprise one of the most promising platforms for quantum information processing due to their long coherence times and to their scalability into larger qubit networks. However, their weakly anharmonic spectrum leads to spectral crowding in multiqubit systems, making it challenging to implement fast, high-fidelity gates while avoiding leakage errors. To address this challenge, we use a protocol known as SWIPHT [Phys. Rev. B 91, 161405(R) (2015)], which yields smooth, simple microwave pulses designed to suppress leakage without sacrificing gate speed through spectr…
Control over the quantum states of a massive oscillator is important for several technological applications and to test the fundamental limits of quantum mechanics. Addition of an internal degree of freedom to the oscillator could be a valuable resource for such control. Recently, hybrid electromechanical systems using superconducting qubits, based on electric-charge mediated coupling, have been quite successful. Here, we realize a hybrid device, consisting of a superconducting transmon qubit and a mechanical resonator coupled using the magnetic-flux. The coupling stems from the quantum-interf…
Superconducting qubits utilize the strong non-linearity of the Josephson junctions. Control over the Josephson nonlinearity, either by a current bias or by the magnetic flux, can be a valuable resource that brings tunability in the hybrid system consisting of superconducting qubits. To enable such a control, here we incorporate a fast-flux line for a frequency tunable transmon qubit in 3D cavity architecture. We investigate the flux-dependent dynamic range, relaxation from unconfined states, and the bandwidth of the flux-line. Using time-domain measurements, we probe transmon's relaxation from…
We demonstrate strong suppression of charge dispersion in a semiconductor-based transmon qubit across Josephson resonances associated with a quantum dot in the junction. On resonance, dispersion is drastically reduced compared to conventional transmons with corresponding Josephson and charging energies. We develop a model of qubit dispersion for a single-channel resonance, which is in quantitative agreement with experimental data.
We propose a scheme for controlling a radio-frequency mechanical resonator at the quantum level using a superconducting qubit. The mechanical part of the circuit consists of a suspended micrometer-long beam that is embedded in the loop of a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) and is connected in parallel to a transmon qubit. Using realistic parameters from recent experiments with similar devices, we show that this configuration can enable a tuneable optomechanical interaction in the single-photon ultrastrong-coupling regime, where the radiation-pressure coupling strength is lar…
Quasiparticles are an intrinsic source of relaxation and decoherence for superconducting qubits. Recent works have shown that normal-metal traps may be used to evacuate quasiparticles, and potentially improve the qubit life time. Here, we investigate how far the normal metals themselves may introduce qubit relaxation. We identify the ohmic losses inside the normal metal and the tunnelling current through the normal metal-superconductor interface as the relevant relaxation mechanisms. We show that the ohmic loss contribution depends strongly on the device and trap geometry, as a result of the i…
We report on long-term measurements of a highly coherent, non-tunable superconducting transmon qubit, revealing low-frequency burst noise in coherence times and qubit transition frequency. We achieve this through a simultaneous measurement of the qubit's relaxation and dephasing rate as well as its resonance frequency. The analysis of correlations between these parameters yields information about the microscopic origin of the intrinsic decoherence mechanisms in Josephson qubits. Our results are consistent with a small number of microscopic two-level systems located at the edges of the supercon…

Active qubit reset is a key operation in many quantum algorithms, and particularly in error correction codes. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a reset scheme of a three level transmon artificial atom coupled to a large bandwidth resonator. The reset protocol uses a microwave-induced interaction between the $|f,0\rangle$ and $|g,1\rangle$ states of the coupled transmon-resonator system, with $|g\rangle$ and $|f\rangle$ denoting the ground and second excited states of the transmon, and $|0\rangle$ and $|1\rangle$ the photon Fock states of the resonator. We characterize the reset process and d…
A challenge in the Gauss sums factorization scheme is the presence of ghost factors - non-factors that behave similarly to actual factors of an integer - which might lead to the misidentification of non-factors as factors or vice versa, especially in the presence of noise. We investigate Type II ghost factors, which are the class of ghost factors that cannot be suppressed with techniques previously laid out in the literature. The presence of Type II ghost factors and the coherence time of the qubit set an upper limit for the total experiment time, and hence the largest factorizable number with…
We present an experimental study of nanowire transmons at zero and applied in-plane magnetic field. With Josephson non-linearities provided by the nanowires, our qubits operate at higher magnetic fields than standard transmons. Nanowire transmons exhibit coherence up to 70 mT, where the induced superconducting gap in the nanowire closes. We demonstrate that on-chip charge noise coupling to the Josephson energy plays a dominant role in the qubit dephasing. This takes the form of strongly-coupled two-level systems switching on 100 ms timescales and a more weakly coupled background producing $1/f…
Controlling quasiparticle dynamics can improve the performance of superconducting devices. For example, it has been demonstrated effective in increasing lifetime and stability of superconducting qubits. Here we study how to optimize the placement of normal-metal traps in transmon-type qubits. When the trap size increases beyond a certain characteristic length, the details of the geometry and trap position, and even the number of traps, become important. We discuss for some experimentally relevant examples how to shorten the decay time of the excess quasiparticle density. Moreover, we show that…
Spin qubits and superconducting qubits are among the promising candidates for a solid state quantum computer. For the implementation of a hybrid architecture which can profit from the advantages of either world, a coherent long-distance link is necessary that integrates and couples both qubit types on the same chip. We realize such a link with a frequency-tunable high impedance SQUID array resonator. The spin qubit is a resonant exchange qubit hosted in a GaAs triple quantum dot. It can be operated at zero magnetic field, allowing it to coexist with superconducting qubits on the same chip. We …
Non-equilibrium quasiparticle excitations degrade the performance of a variety of superconducting circuits. Understanding the energy distribution of these quasiparticles will yield insight into their generation mechanisms, the limitations they impose on superconducting devices, and how to efficiently mitigate quasiparticle-induced qubit decoherence. To probe this energy distribution, we systematically correlate qubit relaxation and excitation with charge-parity switches in an offset-charge-sensitive transmon qubit, and find that quasiparticle-induced excitation events are the dominant mechanis…
We present a voltage gate-based method for controlling the Majorana transmon, using a sinusoidal modulation of the induced offset charge $n_g$. Working in the transmon regime and in the instantaneous eigenstates basis, we find the time evolution under this protocol that realises tunable $X$-$Z$ rotations. We optimise the parameters of the system for different single-qubit gates in both the laboratory frame and the qubit rotating frame, obtaining qubit control errors $1-\mathcal{F}$ smaller than $\sim2\times 10^{-4}$. In addition to this, we conduct an analysis of the effects of the charge nois…
Single-photon sources are of great interest because they are key elements in different promising applications of quantum technologies. Here we demonstrate a highly efficient tunable on-demand microwave single-photon source based on a transmon qubit with the intrinsic emission efficiency above 98$\%$. The high efficiency ensures a negligible pure dephasing rate and the necessary condition for generation of indistinguishable photons. We provide an extended discussion and analysis of the efficiency of the photon generation. To further experimentally confirm the single-photon property of the sourc…
