We present an analysis of the X-ray spectrum and long-term variability of the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy Henize 2-10. Recent observations suggest that this galaxy hosts an actively accreting black hole with mass ~10^6 M_sun. The presence of an AGN in a low-mass starburst galaxy marks a new environment for active galactic nuclei (AGNs), with implications for the processes by which "seed" black holes may form in the early Universe. In this paper, we analyze four epochs of X-ray observations of Henize 2-10, to characterize the long-term behavior of its hard nuclear emission. We analyze observations with Chandra from 2001 and XMM-Newton from 2004 and 2011, as well as an earlier, less sensitive observation with ASCA from 1997. Based on detailed analysis of the source and background, we find that the hard (2-10 keV) flux of the putative AGN has decreased by approximately an order of magnitude between the 2001 Chandra observation and exposures with XMM-Newton in 2004 and 2011. The observed variability confirms that the emission is due to a single source. It is unlikely that the variable flux is due to a supernova or ultraluminous X-ray source, based on the observed long-term behavior of the X-ray and radio emission, while the observed X-ray variability is consistent with the behavior of well-studied AGNs.
We present new ${ }^{12}$CO(J=1-0) observations of Henize 2-10, a blue compact dwarf galaxy about 8.7 Mpc away, taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array. These are the highest spatial and spectral resolution observations, to date, of the molecular gas in this starburst galaxy. We measure a molecular mass of $1.2\times10^8 M_\odot$ in Henize 2-10, and most of the molecular gas is contained within a region having a size of about 310 pc. We use the CPROPS algorithm to identify 119 resolved giant molecular clouds distributed throughout the galaxy, and the molecular gas contained within these …
Black hole driven outflows have been observed in some dwarf galaxies with active galactic nuclei (1), and likely play a role in heating and expelling gas (thereby suppressing star formation), as they do in larger galaxies (2). The extent to which black hole outflows can trigger star formation in dwarf galaxies is unclear, because work in this area has hitherto focused on massive galaxies and the observational evidence is scarce (3,4,5). Henize 2-10 is a dwarf starburst galaxy previously reported to have a central massive black hole (6,7,8,9), though that interpretation has been disputed since …
We present follow-up X-ray observations of the candidate massive black hole (BH) in the nucleus of the low-mass, compact starburst galaxy Henize 2-10. Using new high-resolution observations from the Chandra X-ray Observatory totaling 200 ks in duration, as well as archival Chandra observations from 2001, we demonstrate the presence of a previously unidentified X-ray point source that is spatially coincident with the known nuclear radio source in Henize 2-10 (i.e., the massive BH). We show that the hard X-ray emission previously identified in the 2001 observation is dominated by a source that i…
A candidate accreting massive black hole (BH) with M_BH ~ 10^6 Msun has recently been identified at the center of the dwarf starburst galaxy Henize 2-10 (He 2-10). This discovery offers the first possibility of studying a growing BH in a nearby galaxy resembling those in the earlier universe, and opens up a new class of host galaxies to search for the smallest supermassive BHs. Here we present very long baseline interferometry observations of He 2-10 taken with the Long Baseline Array (LBA) at 1.4 GHz with an angular resolution of ~0.1" x 0.03". A single compact radio source is detected at the…
We present results of a set of $N$-body simulations to model the future evolution of the 11 young massive clusters hosted in the central region of the dwarf starburst galaxy Henize 2-10, which contains at its center a massive black hole with a mass $M_{\rm BH} \simeq 2\times 10^6$ M$_\odot$. Nuclear star clusters are present in a great quantity of galaxies of mass similar to Henize 2-10. Our results \citep{ASCD15} show that the orbital decay and merging of the Henize 2-10 clusters will likely lead to the formation of a nuclear star cluster with mass $M_{\rm NSC} \simeq 4-6 \times 10^6$ M$_\odo…
Dwarf galaxies are ideal laboratories to study the physics of the interstellar medium (ISM). Emission lines have been widely used to this aim. Retrieving the full information encoded in the spectra is therefore essential. This can be efficiently and reliably done using Machine Learning (ML) algorithms. Here, we apply the ML code GAME to MUSE (Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer) and PMAS (Potsdam Multi Aperture Spectrophotometer) Integral Field Unit (IFU) observations of two nearby Blue Compact Galaxies (BCGs): Henize 2-10 and IZw18. We derive spatially resolved maps of several key ISM physical …
We present ALMA observations of the dwarf starburst galaxy Henize 2-10 in combination with previous SMA CO observations to probe the molecular environments of natal super star clusters. These observations include the HCO$^+$(1-0), HCN(1-0), HNC(1-0), and CCH(1-0) molecular lines, as well as 88 GHz continuum with a spatial resolution of $1''.7\times 1''.6$. After correcting for the contribution from free-free emission to the 88 GHz continuum flux density ($\sim$ 60% of the 88 GHz emission), we derive a total gas mass for He~2-10 of $M_{gas} = 4-6\times10^8$ M$_{\odot}$, roughly 5-20% of the dyn…
We present ALMA CO(3-2) observations at 0.3 arcsec resolution of He2-10, a starburst dwarf galaxy and possible high-z galaxy analogue. The warm dense gas traced by CO(3--2) is found in clumpy filaments that are kinematically and spatially distinct. The filaments have no preferred orientation or direction; this may indicate that the galaxy is not evolving into a disk galaxy. Filaments appear to be feeding the active starburst; the velocity field in one filament suggests acceleration onto an embedded star cluster. The relative strengths of CO(3-2) and radio continuum vary strongly on decaparsec …

Henize 2-10 is a blue dwarf galaxy with intense star formation and one the most intriguing question about it is whether or not it hosts an accretingmassive black hole. We use H and K-band integral field spectra of the inner 130 pc$\times$130 pc of He 2-10 to investigate the emission and kinematics of the gas at unprecedented spatial resolution. The observations were done using the Gemini Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) operating with the ALTAIR adaptive optics module and the resulting spatial resolutions are 6.5 pc and 8.6 pc in the K and H bands, respectively. Most of the lin…
Using a hybrid binary population synthesis approach, we modelled the formation and evolution of populations of accreting WDs for differing star formation histories. We found that the delay time distribution of SNe Ia in the single degenerate scenario is inconsistent with observations. Additionally, we found that our predicted X-ray and UV emission of populations of accreting WDs are consistent with the X-ray luminosities of early-type galaxies observed by Chandra and the HeII 4686Å/Hβline ratio measured in stacked SDSS spectra of passively evolving galaxies. Moreover, we found that the majorit…
We report on the detection of the linear rms-flux relation in two accreting white dwarf binary systems: V1504 Cyg and KIC 8751494. The rms-flux relation relates the absolute root-mean-square (rms) variability of the light curve to its mean flux. The light curves analysed were obtained with the Kepler satellite at a 58.8 s cadence. The rms-flux relation was previously detected in only one other cataclysmic variable, MV Lyr. This result reenforces the ubiquity of the linear rms-flux relation as a characteristic property of accretion-induced variability, since it has been observed in several blac…
Steadily accreting white dwarfs (WDs) are efficient sources of ionization and thus, are able to create extended ionized nebulae in their vicinity. These nebulae represent ideal tools for the detection of accreting WDs, given that in most cases the source itself is faint. In this work, we combine radiation transfer simulations with known H and He accreting WD models, providing for the first time the ionization state and the emission line spectra of the formed nebulae as a function of the WD mass, the accretion rate and the chemical composition of the accreted material. We find that the nebular …
We report the discovery of a linear relationship between the root-mean-square (rms) variability amplitude and the mean flux in the accreting white dwarf binary system MV Lyrae. Our lightcurve, obtained with the Kepler satellite, spans 633 days with quasi-continuous 58.8 second cadence resolution. We show, for the first time, how this cataclysmic variable displays linear rms-flux relations similar to those observed in many other black hole binaries, neutron star binaries and Active Galactic Nuclei. The phenomenological similarity between the rms-flux relation observed here and in other X-ray bi…
Many binary companions to the central stars of planetary nebulae (PNe) are found to be inflated, perhaps indicating that accretion onto the central star might occur during the PN phase. The discovery of a handful of nova eruptions and supersoft X-ray sources inside PNe supports this hypothesis. In this paper, we investigate the impact that hosting a steadily-accreting WD would have on the properties and evolution of a PN. By pairing the published accreting nuclear-burning WD models with radiation transfer simulations, we extract the time evolution of the emission line spectra and ionization pr…
Accreting white dwarfs (WDs) with non-degenerate companions are expected to emit in soft X-rays and the UV, if accreted H-rich material burns stably. They are an important component of the unresolved emission of elliptical galaxies, and their combined ionizing luminosity may significantly influence the optical line emission from warm ISM. In an earlier paper we modeled populations of accreting WDs, first generating WD with main-sequence, Hertzsprung gap and red giant companions with the population synthesis code \textsc{BSE}, and then following their evolution with a grid of evolutionary track…
We present the results of our studies of the aperiodic optical flux variability for SS Cyg, an accreting binary systemwith a white dwarf. The main set of observational data presented here was obtained with the ANDOR/iXon DU-888 photometer mounted on the RTT-150 telescope, which allowed a record(for CCD photometers) time resolution up to 8 ms to be achieved. The power spectra of the source's flux variability have revealed that the aperiodic variability contains information about the inner boundary of the optically thick flow in the binary system. We show that the inner boundary of the optically…
This is the second in a series of papers associated with cataclysmic variables (CVs) and related objects, formed in a suite of simulations for globular cluster evolution performed with the MOCCA Monte Carlo code. We study the properties of our simulated CV populations throughout the entire cluster evolution. We find that dynamics extends the range of binary CV progenitor properties, causing CV formation from binary progenitors that would otherwise not become CVs. The CV formation rate in our simulations can be separated into two regimes: an initial burst ($\lesssim$ 1 Gyr) connected with the f…
