Neutrino oscillations are well established and the relevant parameters determined with good precision, except for the CP phase, in terms of a unitary lepton mixing matrix. Seesaw extensions of the Standard Model predict unitarity deviations due to the admixture of heavy isosinglet neutrinos. We provide a complete description of the unitarity and universality deviations in the light neutrino sector. Neutrino oscillation experiments involving electron or muon neutrinos and anti-neutrinos are fully described in terms of just three new real parameters and a new CP phase, in addition to the ones describing oscillations with unitary mixing. Using this formalism we describe the implications of non-unitarity for neutrino oscillations and summarize the model-independent constraints on heavy neutrino couplings that arise from current experiments.
We consider a scenario with unitary mixing of the three light standard neutrinos and a non-unitary mixing contribution of a heavier massive neutrino that can generate short-baseline neutrino oscillations. We show that this scenario predicts constant flavor-changing probabilities at short-baseline distances. Therefore, it cannot explain the spectral distortions observed in the LSND and MiniBooNE appearance experiments. On the other hand, the survival probabilities oscillate as functions of $L/E$ and could explain oscillations in short-baseline disappearance experiments. We also derive the bound…
The $ν_μ\to ν_e$ oscillation probability over short baseline ($\lesssim 1$~km) would be negligible in case the mixing matrix for three active neutrinos is unitary. However, in case of non-unitary mixing of three neutrinos, this probability would be non-negligible due to the so-called "zero distance" effect. Hence, the near detector of the accelerator experiments such as NO$ν$A can provide strong constraints on the parameters of the non-unitary mixing with very large statistics. By analyzing the NO$ν$A near detector data we find that the non-unitary mixing does not improve fits to the $ν_e$ or …
The mixing of three active neutrino flavors is parameterized by the unitary PMNS matrix. If there are more than three neutrino flavors and if the extra generations are heavy isosinglets, the effective $3\times 3$ mixing matrix for the three active neutrinos will be non-unitary. We have analyzed the latest T2K and \nova data with the hypothesis of non-unitary mixing of the active neutrinos. We found that the 2019 NO$ν$A data slightly (at $\sim 1\, σ$ C.L.) prefer the non-unitary mixing over unitary mixing. In fact, allowing the non-unitary mixing brings the \nova best-fit point in the $\sin^2θ_…
The neutrino mixing parameters are thoroughly studied using renormalization-group evolution of Dirac neutrinos with recently proposed parametrization of the neutrino mixing angles referred as `high-scale mixing relations'. The correlations among all neutrino mixing and $CP$ violating observables are investigated. The predictions for the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{23}$ are precise, and could be easily tested by ongoing and future experiments. We observe that the high scale mixing unification hypothesis is incompatible with Dirac neutrinos due to updated experimental data.
When neutrino masses arise from the exchange of neutral heavy leptons, as in most seesaw schemes, the effective lepton mixing matrix $N$ describing neutrino propagation is non-unitary, hence neutrinos are not exactly orthonormal. New CP violation phases appear in $N$ that could be confused with the standard phase $δ_{\text{CP}}$ characterizing the three neutrino paradigm. We study the potential of the long-baseline neutrino experiment DUNE in probing CP violation induced by the standard CP phase in the presence of non-unitarity. In order to accomplish this we develop our previous formalism, so…
Non-unitary neutrino mixing in the light neutrino sector is a direct consequence of type-I seesaw neutrino mass models. In these models, light neutrino mixing is described by a sub-matrix of the full lepton mixing matrix and, then, it is not unitary in general. In consequence, neutrino oscillations are characterized by additional parameters, including new sources of CP violation. Here we perform a combined analysis of short and long-baseline neutrino oscillation data in this extended mixing scenario. We did not find a significant deviation from unitary mixing, and the complementary data sets h…
If massive neutrinos are Majorana particles, then the lepton number should be violated and neutrino-antineutrino oscillations will take place. In this talk, we present the properties of CP violation in neutrino-antineutrino oscillations with a non-unitary leptonic flavor mixing matrix, which naturally arises in the type-I seesaw model due to the mixing between light and heavy Majorana neutrinos. Taking into account current experimental bounds on the leptonic unitarity violation, we show that the CP asymmetries induced by the non-unitary mixing parameters can significantly deviate from those in…
The current status of the phenomenology of short-baseline neutrino oscillations induced by light sterile neutrinos in the framework of 3+1 mixing is reviewed.
This paper investigates the capability of long-baseline experiments, which are making use of neutrinos that are coming from Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), in establishing the unitarity of active-neutrino mixing by ruling out the non-unitary mixing scheme as a function of true values of CP-violating phase $δ_{\mathrm{CP}}$. It is found that T2HK can establish unitarity of active neutrino mixing at above 2$σ$ C.L. irrespective of neutrino mass hierarchy and true value of $δ_{CP}$, if non-unitary (NU) parameter $α_{21}$ is of the order of $10^{-2}$. Further, this paper is als…
We explore the possibility of generating a non-zero $U_{e3}$ element of the neutrino mixing matrix from tribimaximal neutrino mixing by adding a light sterile neutrino to the active neutrinos. Small active-sterile mixing can provide the necessary deviation from tribimaximal mixing to generate a non-zero $θ_{13}$ and atmospheric mixing $θ_{23}$ different from maximal. Assuming no CP-violation, we study the phenomenological impact of sterile neutrinos in the context of current neutrino oscillation data. The tribimaximal pattern is broken in such a manner that the second column of tribimaximal mi…
If neutrinos are Dirac, the conditions for cobimaximal mixing, i.e. $θ_{23}=π/4$ and $δ_{CP}=\pm π/2$ in the $3 \times 3$ neutrino mixing matrix, are derived. One example with $A_4$ symmetry and radiative Dirac neutrino masses is presented.
The 2-neutrino exchange potential (2NEP) is a Standard Model (SM) weak potential due to the exchange of virtual neutrino-antineutrino pairs. Consequently, many aspects of neutrino physics, such as the number of flavors, their masses, fermionic nature (Dirac or Majorana), low-energy neutrino physics and CP-violation, can be examined via the 2NEP. We present a new approach for calculating the 2NEP taking into account the phenomenon of neutrino mixing and CP-violation which arises from the structure of the SM weak interaction Lagrangian. Lastly, we explore implications of our result in various ph…
Non-unitary neutrino mixing implies an extra CP violating phase that can fake the leptonic Dirac CP phase $δ_{CP}$ of the simplest three-neutrino mixing benchmark scheme. This would hinder the possibility of probing for CP violation in accelerator-type experiments. We take T2K and T2HK as examples to demonstrate the degeneracy between the "standard" (or "unitary") and "non-unitary" CP phases. We find, under the assumption of non-unitary mixing, that their CP sensitivities severely deteriorate. Fortunately, the TNT2K proposal of supplementing T2(H)K with a $μ$DAR source for better measurement o…
We propose new mixing schemes for (3+1) neutrinos which describe mixing among active-active and active-sterile neutrinos. The mixing matrix in these mixing schemes can be factored into a zeroth order flavor symmetric part and another part representing small perturbations needed for generating non-zero $U_{e3}$, nonmaximal $θ_{23}$, CP violation and active-sterile mixing. We find interesting correlations amongst various neutrino mixing angles and, also, calculate the parameter space for various parameters.
