We investigate the impact of strained nanobubbles on the conductance characteristics of graphene nanoribbons using a combined molecular dynamics - tight-binding simulation scheme. We describe in detail how the conductance, density of states, and current density of zigzag or armchair graphene nanoribbons are modified by the presence of a nanobubble. In particular, we establish that low-energy electrons can be confined in the vicinity or within the nanobubbles by the delicate interplay between the pseudomagnetic field pattern created by the shape of the bubble, mode mixing, and substrate interaction. The coupling between confined evanescent states and propagating modes can be enhanced under different clamping conditions, which translates into Fano resonances in the conductance traces.
Strain in two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) has led to localized states with exciting optical properties, in particular in view of designing one photon sources. The naturally formed of the MoS2 monolayer deposed on hBN substrate leads to a reduction of the bandgap in the strained region creating a nanobubble. The photogenerated particles are thus confined in the strain-induced potential. Using numerical diagonalization, we simulate the spectra of the confined exciton states, their oscillator strengths and radiative lifetimes. We show that a single state of the confined…
We consider the scattering of Dirac particles in graphene due to the superposition of an external magnetic field and mechanical strain. As a model for a graphene nanobubble, we find exact analytical solutions for single-particle states inside and outside a circular region submitted to the fields. Finally, we obtain analytical expressions for the scattering cross-section, as well as for the Landauer current through the circular region. Our results provide a fully-analytical treatment for electronic transport through a graphene nanobubble, showing that a combination of a physical magnetic field …
Motivated by the ever-improving performance of deep learning techniques, we design a mixed input convolutional neural network approach to predict transport properties in deformed nanoscale materials using a height map of deformations (from scanning probe information) as input. We employ our approach to study electrical transport in a graphene nanoribbon deformed by a number of randomly positioned nano-bubbles. Our network is able to make conductance predictions valid to an average error of 4.3\%. We demonstrate that such low average errors are achieved by including additional inputs like energ…
We consider a single-layer graphene with high ripples, so that the pseudo-magnetic fields due to these ripples are strong. If the magnetic length corresponding to a typical pseudo-magnetic field is smaller than the ripple size, the resulting Landau levels are local. Then the effective properties of the macroscopic sample can be calculated by averaging the local properties over the distribution of ripples. We find that this averaging does not wash out the Landau quantization completely. Average density of states (DOS) contains a feature (inflection point) at energy corresponding to the first La…
Strain qualitatively changes the low-energy band structure of bilayer graphene, leading to the appearance of a pair of low-energy Dirac cones near each corner of the Brillouin zone, and a Lifshitz transition, (a saddle point in the dispersion relation) at an energy proportional to the strain [M. Mucha-Kruczynski, I.L. Aleiner, and V.I. Fal'ko, Phys. Rev. B 84, 041404 (2011)]. Here, we show that in the vicinity of the Lifshitz transition the conductance of a ballistic n-p and n-p-n junction exhibits an anomaly: a non-monotonic temperature and chemical potential dependence, with the size dependi…
The transmission of the electron across the single normal metal-graphene (NG) and normal-metal-graphene-normal-metal (NGN) junctions has been investigated. For the single NG junction, the profile of the maximum transmission which has been plotted against the dimensionless interface hopping respectively bears similarity to that of the conductance of the system. The minor effect of the incidence energy on transmission can also be found in conductance of the single NG junction whose tunneling behavior poses a striking difference from that of the NGN junction. Concerning with NGN junction, the tra…
We study analytically and numerically the magnetotransport of strained graphene in a Corbino geometry gating in the presence of an external perpendicular magnetic field. The conductance of the Corbino disc of deformed graphene with a uniaxial and an inhomogeneous strain is calculated by using the Landauer-Büttiker method. We show that the oscillation period of the conductance as a function of the magnetic flux depends on uniaxial strain and the conductance sharply drops along the direction of graphene stretching. The conductance amplitude, on the other hand, can be manipulated by induced pseud…
Graphene's outstanding mechanical properties lend to strain engineering, allowing for future valleytronics and nanoelectromechanic applications. In this work, we have found that a Gaussian-shaped strain on a graphene p-n junction results in quantum Hall conductance oscillations due to the rotated angle between valley isospins at the graphene armchair edges. Furthermore, additional Fano resonances were observed as the value of the strain-induced pseudo-magnetic field approaches that of the external magnetic field. The lifted valley degeneracy, stemming from the interplay between the real and ps…
We theoretically investigate the spin-charge transport in two-terminal device of graphene nanoribbons in the presence of an uniform uniaxial strain, spin-orbit coupling, exchange field and smooth staggered potential. We show that the direction of applied strain can efficiently tune strain-strength induced oscillation of band-gap of armchair graphene nanoribbon (AGNR). It is also found that electronic conductance in both AGNR and zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) oscillates with Rashba spin-orbit coupling akin to the Datta-Das field effect transistor. Two distinct strain response regimes of e…
Based on the BTK theory, we investigate the tunneling conductance in a uniaxially strained graphene-based normal metal (NG)/ barrier (I)/superconductor (SG) junctions. In the present model, we assume that depositing the conventional superconductor on the top of the uniaxially strained graphene, normal graphene may turn to superconducting graphene with the Cooper pairs formed by the asymmetric Weyl-Dirac electrons, the massless fermions with direction-dependent velocity. The highly asymmetrical velocity, vy/vx>>1, may be created by strain in the zigzag direction near the transition point betwee…
A strained graphene monolayer is shown to operate as a highly efficient quantum heat engine delivering maximum power. The efficiency and power of the proposed device exceeds that of recent proposals. The reason for these excellent characteristics is that strain enables complete valley separation in transmittance through the device, implying that increasing strain leads to very high Seebeck coefficient as well as lower conductance. In addition, since time-reversal symmetry is unbroken in our system, the proposed strained graphene quantum heat engine can also act as a high performance refrigerat…
Magnetotransport provides key experimental signatures in Weyl semimetals. The longitudinal magnetoresistance is linked to the chiral anomaly and the transversal magnetoresistance to the dominant charge relaxation mechanism. Axial magnetic fields that act with opposite sign on opposite chiralities facilitate new transport experiments that probe the low-energy Weyl nodes. As recently realized, these axial fields can be achieved by straining samples or adding inhomogeneities to them. Here, we identify a robust signature of axial magnetic fields: an anomalous scaling of the conductance in the diff…
In inhomogeneously strained graphene, low-energy electrons experience a valley-antisymmetric pseudo-magnetic field which leads to the formation of localized states at the edge between the valence and conduction bands, understood in terms of peculiar n=0 pseudo-magnetic Landau levels. Here we show that such states can manifest themselves as an isolated quadruplet of low-energy conductance resonances in a suspended stretched graphene ribbon, where clamping by the metallic contacts results in a strong inhomogeneity of strain near the ribbon ends.
To address the robustness of the transport gap induced by locally strained regions in graphene nanostructures, the effect of disorder and smoothness of the interface region is investigated within the Landauer-Büttiker formalism. The electronic conductance across strained junctions and barriers in graphene nanoribbons is calculated numerically, with and without various types of disorder, and comparing smooth and sharp strain junctions. A smooth strain barrier in graphene is seen to be generically as efficient in suppressing transport at low densities as a sharp one, and the critical density (or…
Based on first-principles approaches, we study the ballistic phonon transport properties of finite monatomic carbon chains stretched between graphene nanoribbons, an $sp$-$sp^2$ hybrid carbon nanostructure that has recently seen significant experimental advances in its synthesis. We find that the lattice thermal conductance anomalously increases with tensile strain for the even-numbered carbon chains that adopt the alternating bond-length polyyne configuration. On the other hand, in the odd-numbered carbon chain cases, which assume the equal bond-length cumulene configuration, phonon conductan…
We present a single barrier system to generate pure valley-polarized current in monolayer graphene. A uniaxial strain is applied within the barrier region, which is delineated by localized magnetic field created by ferromagnetic stripes at the regions boundaries. We show that under the condition of matching magnetic field strength, strain potential, and Fermi energy, the transmitted current is composed of only one valley contribution. The desired valley current can transmit with zero reflection while the electrons from the other valley are totally reflected. Thus, the system generates pure val…
Charge transport through a rectangular vector potential barrier modulated by a continuum laser in monolayer phosphorene is studied theoretically in the ballistic regime along the line of Floquet formalism. Laser free transmission profile displays strong directional behavior exhibiting collimation depending on the incident energy and width of the barrier. However, the application of laser, polarized along the zig-zag direction, creates a sharp anti-resonance in the transmission spectrum and reveals a strong light matter interaction due to broken symmetry in presence of the magnetic vector poten…
Deformations in graphene systems are central elements in the novel field of {\it straintronics}. Various strain geometries have been proposed to produce specific properties but their experimental realization has been limited. Because strained folds can be engineered on graphene samples on appropriate substrates, we study their effects on graphene transport properties. We show the existence of an enhanced local density of states (LDOS) along the direction of the strained fold that originates from localization of higher energy states, and provides extra conductance channels at lower energies. In…
This work investigates the effect of the uniaxial strain on the tunneling conductance in a strained graphene superconductor where strain is applied in the armchair direction. Based on the Tight-Binding model, applying strain in the armchair direction gives rise to the asymmetric massless fermions as the carriers. Their velocities depend on their directions controlled by strain. Using the BTK theory, the conductances of strained graphene N/S junctions can be determined. As a result, we find that the current flowing perpendicular to the direction of strain depends linearly on strain, with the po…
Strain engineering is a promising approach for suppressing the OFF-state conductance in graphene-based devices that arises from Klein tunnelling. In this work, we derive a comprehensive tight-binding Hamiltonian for strained graphene that incorporates strain-induced effects that have been neglected hitherto, such as the distortion of the unit cell under strain, the effect of strain on the next-nearest neighbor coupling, and the second-order contributions of the strain tensor. We derive the corresponding low-energy effective Hamiltonian about the Dirac points and reformulate the boundary condit…
We calculate conductance and noise for quantum transport at the nodal point for arbitrarily tilted and anisotropic Dirac or Weyl cones. Tilted and anisotropic dispersions are generic in absence of certain discrete symmetries, such as particle-hole and lattice point group symmetries. Whereas anisotropy affects the conductance g, but leaves the Fano factor F (the ratio of shot noise power and current) unchanged, a tilt affects both g and F. Since F is a universal number in many other situations, this finding is remarkable. We apply our general considerations to specific lattice models of straine…
Graphene has emerged as an electronic material that is promising for device applications and for studying two-dimensional electron gases with relativistic dispersion near two Dirac points. Nonetheless, deviations from Dirac-like spectroscopy have been widely reported with varying interpretations. Here we show evidence for strain-induced spatial modulations in the local conductance of single-layer graphene on SiO2 substrates from scanning tunneling microscopic (STM) studies. We find that strained graphene exhibits parabolic, U-shaped conductance vs. bias voltage spectra rather than the V-shaped…
The electronic properties of graphene can be manipulated via mechanical deformations, which opens prospects for studying the Dirac fermions in new regimes and for new device applications. Certain natural configurations of strain generate large nearly uniform pseudo-magnetic fields, which have opposite signs in the two valleys, and give rise to flat spin- and valley-degenerate pseudo Landau levels (PLLs). Here we consider the effect of the Coulomb interactions in strained graphene with uniform pseudo-magnetic field. We show that the spin/valley degeneracies of the PLLs get lifted by the interac…

Using a combination of accurate density-functional theory and a nonequilibrium Green function's method, we calculate the ballistic thermal conductance characteristics of tensile-strained armchair (AGNR) and zigzag (ZGNR) edge graphene nanoribbons, with widths between 3-50 Å. The optimized lateral lattice constants for AGNRs of different widths display a three-family behavior when the ribbons are grouped according to N modulo 3, where $N$ represents the number of carbon atoms across the width of the ribbon. Two lowest-frequency out-of-plane acoustic modes play a decisive role in increasing the …
Confinement of electrons in graphene to make devices has proven to be a challenging task. Electrostatic methods fail because of Klein tunneling, while etching into nanoribbons requires extreme control of edge terminations, and bottom-up approaches are limited in size to a few nanometers. Fortunately, its mechanical flexibility raises the possibility of using strain to alter graphene's properties and create novel straintronic devices. Here, we report transport studies of nanowires created by linearly-shaped strained regions resulting from individual folds formed by layer transfer onto hexagonal…
