We present an analytic next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the partonic cross sections for single-inclusive lepton production in hadronic collisions, when the lepton originates from the decay of an intermediate electroweak boson and is produced at high transverse momentum. In particular, we consider the case of incoming longitudinally polarized protons for which parity-violating single-spin asymmetries arise that are exploited in the $W$ boson program at RHIC to constrain the proton's helicity parton distributions. Our calculation enables a very fast and efficient numerical computation of the relevant spin asymmetries at RHIC, which is an important ingredient for the inclusion of RHIC data in a global analysis of nucleon helicity structure. We confirm the validity of our calculation by comparing with an existing code that treats the next-to-leading order cross sections entirely numerically by Monte-Carlo integration techniques. We also provide new comparisons of the present RHIC data with results for some of the sets of polarized parton distributions available in the literature.
By considering left-right (L-R) asymmetries we study the capabilities of lepton colliders in searching for new exotic vector bosons. Specifically we study the effect of a doubly charged bilepton boson and an extra neutral vector boson appearing in a 3-3-1 model on the L-R asymmetries for the processes $e^-e^-\to e^-e^-$, $μ^-μ^-\toμ^-μ^-$ and $e^-μ^-\to e^-μ^-$ and show that these asymmetries are very sensitive to these new contributions and that they are in fact powerful tools for discovery this sort of vector bosons.
Several left-right parity violating asymmetries in lepton-lepton scattering in fixed target and collider experiments are considered as signals for doubly charged vector bosons (bileptons).
The polarized antiquark distributions in the proton can be measured by studying spin asymmetries in vector boson production in longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions. The STAR and PHENIX experiments at BNL RHIC have reported first observations of single spin asymmetries in $W^\pm$-production most recently. We compute the QCD corrections to single and double spin asymmetries, taking account of the leptonic decay of the $W^\pm$ boson and of restrictions on the kinematical acceptance of the detectors. The QCD corrections have only a small impact on the asymmetries, such that a reliable…
The production of $W^{\pm}$ and $Z^0$ bosons in collisions of longitudinally polarized protons allows to access various combinations of the polarized quark distributions from the study of double and single spin asymmetries. We compute the ${\cal O}(α_s)$ corrections to these asymmetries as function of the vector boson rapidity $y$ in the hadron-hadron centre-of-mass frame. Detailed studies of the numerical impact of the next-to-leading order corrections are presented. The theoretical uncertainties of an extraction of polarized quark distributions from future vector boson production data are in…
We examine the spin-dependence of standard model Higgs boson production at large transverse momentum via the processes $gg \rightarrow gH^0$, $qg \rightarrow qH^0$, and $q\overline{q} \rightarrow gH^0$. The partonic level spin-spin asymmetries ($\hat{a}_{LL}$) for these processes are large at SSC/LHC energies.
In the Standard Model with Minimal Supersymmetry, the Lagrangian contains complex parameters which lead to additional CP violation. We study CP violating asymmetries in the decays of the MSSM charged Higgs boson, induced by loop corrections with intermediate SUSY particles, and perform analytical and numerical analysis. The decay rate asymmetry can go up to 25% and the forward-backward asymmetry can reach up to 10%.
We consider the production of $W$ and $Z / γ^{*}$ gauge bosons in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 510 \mbox{GeV}$ available at RHIC at BNL, operating at high luminosity. We stress the importance of measuring the transverse double-spin asymmetries $A_{TT}$, in connection with available transversely polarized beams with a high degree of polarisation. We will discuss some theoretical issues related to the predicted asymmetries. These studies are contrasted to the 2017 RHIC running operation of transversely polarized beams of mid-rapidity $W$ and $Z$ boson produc…
Transverse single-spin asymmetries (SSA) in inclusive reactions are now considered to be directly related to the transverse momentum $k_{T}$ of the fundamental partons involved in the process. Several possible leading-twist QCD mechanisms have been proposed to explain the available data, in particular the Sivers effect which was resurrected recently. We show that from the measurement of transverse SSA in inclusive production of gauge bosons, one can learn more about the Sivers functions and possibly to achieve a reliable flavor separation.
We present a technique to calculate the cross sections and spin asymmetries for transversely polarized $pp$ collisions at NLO in QCD and report on the use of this technique for the processes $p^{\uparrow} p^{\uparrow} \to γX$, $p^{\uparrow} p^{\uparrow} \to πX$ and $p^{\uparrow} p^{\uparrow} \to l^+ l^- X$.
We study neutralino production at the linear collider with the subsequent two-body decays ~chi^0_i -> ~chi^0_n Z^0 and Z^0 -> l^+ l^-, with l=e, mu, tau, or Z^0 -> q q- with q=c,b. We show that transverse electron and positron beam polarizations allow the definition of unique CP observables. These are azimuthal asymmetries in the distributions of the final leptons or quarks. We calculate these CP asymmetries and the cross sections in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with complex higgsino and gaugino parameters mu and M_1. For final quark pairs, we find CP asymmetries as large as 30%. …
We have computed semi-inclusive spin asymmetries for proton and deuteron targets including next to leading order (NLO) QCD corrections and contributions coming from the target fragmentation region. These corrections have been estimated using NLO fragmentation functions, parton distributions and also a model for spin dependent fracture functions which is proposed here. We have found that NLO corrections are small but non-negligible in a scheme where gluons are polarised and that our estimate for target fragmentation effects does not modify significantly charged asymmetries but affects the so ca…
To measure spin-dependent parton distribution functions in the production of W bosons at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, an accurate model for distributions of charged leptons from the W boson decay is needed. We present single-spin lepton-level cross sections of order $α_S$ for this process, as well as resummed cross sections, which include multiple parton radiation effects. We also present a program RhicBos for the numerical analysis of single-spin and double-spin cross sections in the Drell-Yan process, W and Z boson production.
In order to measure spin-dependent parton distributions in production of weak bosons using the non-hermetic detectors of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, an accurate model for distributions of charged leptons from the W boson decay is needed. We discuss the predictions for production and decay of the W bosons based on a calculation for resummation of large logarithmic contributions originating from multiple soft gluon radiation. We compare the predictions for the spin-dependent resummed cross sections with the corresponding next-to-leading order results. We show that the lepton-level asymm…
We study CP sensitive observables in chargino production in electron-positron collisions with subsequent two-body decay of one chargino into a W boson. We identify the CP odd elements of the W boson density matrix and propose CP sensitive triple-product asymmetries of the chargino decay products. We calculate the density-matrix elements, the CP asymmetries and the cross sections in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with complex parameters μand M_1 for an e+ e- linear collider with \sqrt{s} = 800 GeV and longitudinally polarized beams. The asymmetries can reach 7% and we discuss the fea…
The capability of the NLC run in the $γe$ collision mode to probe the CP-conserving $γWW$ and $γZZ$ anomalous couplings through the use of the polarization asymmetry is reviewed. When combined with other measurements, very strong constraints on both varieties of anomalous couplings can be obtained. We show that these bounds are complementary to those that can be extracted from data taken at the LHC.
We investigate a helicity non-flip double transverse spin asymmetry in vector boson production in hadron-hadron scattering, which was first considered by Ralston and Soper at the tree level. It does not involve transversity functions and in principle also arises in W-boson production for which we present the expressions. The asymmetry requires observing the transverse momentum of the vector boson, but it is not suppressed by explicit inverse powers of a large energy scale. However, as we will show, inclusion of Sudakov factors causes suppression of the asymmetry, which increases with energy. M…
We present a new method to systematically include corrections to the eikonal approximation in the background field formalism. Specifically, we calculate the subleading, power-suppressed corrections due to the finite width of the target or the finite energy of the projectile. Such power-suppressed corrections involve Wilson lines decorated by gradients of the background field - thus related to the density - of the target. The method is of generic applicability. As a first example, we study single inclusive gluon production in pA collisions, and various related spin asymmetries, beyond the eikon…
We investigate the forward-backward asymmetries in the pair production of fourth family fermions through the new Z' interactions in the e+e- collisions. The Z' boson having family universal couplings can contribute to the pair production of fourth family fermions via the s-channel exchange. The linear colliders will provide a clean environment for the physics of Z' boson to measure its couplings precisely. The effects of the Z' boson to the asymmetries are shown to be important in some parameter regions for different Z' models. Among these parameters, the invariant mass distribution m_FFbar wi…
The effects of new neutral $Z^\prime$ boson in $B_{s}\toϕ\ell^{+}\ell^{-}$, when $ϕ$ is longitudinal or transverse polarized, are studied. In addition, the implications of $Z^{\prime}$ boson on the unpolarized and polarized $CP$ violation asymmetries, with reference to lepton, are also presented. It is observed that the branching ratio with polarized $ϕ$ are quite sensitive to the $Z^{\prime}$ contributions which are coming through the modification of Wilson coefficients $C^{eff}_{9}$ and $C_{10}$. Moreover, the off-diagonal elements of the chiral $Z^{\prime}$ couplings contain new weak phase …
In this work we investigate the single- and the double- spin asymmetries at the collisions of polarized protons $pp \to (γ*, Z^0,Z')+X within the scope of QCD, electroweak interaction and superstring E_6 theory. The helicity amplitude method is used. Analytical expressions for the single- and the double- spin asymmetries are obtained and their dependence from the transverse momentum of lepton pair is investigated at the three different values of invariant masses of lepton pair. Has been extracted pure contribution coming from superstring Z' boson on the single- and double- spin asymmetries. Th…
We examine the effects of the R parity odd renormalizable interactions on flavor changing rates and CP violation asymmetries in the production of fermion-antifermion pairs at $e^-- e^+$ leptonic colliders. The produced fermions may be leptons, down-quarks or up-quarks, and the center of mass energies may range from the Z-boson pole up to $ 1000$ GeV. Off the Z-boson pole, the flavor changing rates are controlled by tree level amplitudes and the CP asymmetries by interference terms between tree and loop level amplitudes. At the Z-boson pole, both observables involve loop amplitudes. The lepton …
We study the sensitivity of top pair production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to the nature of an underlying Z' boson, including full tree level standard model background effects and interferences while assuming realistic final state reconstruction efficiencies. We demonstrate that exploiting asymmetry observables represents a promising way to distinguish between a selection of benchmark Z' models due to their unique dependences on the chiral couplings of the new gauge boson.
At LEP~1, cross sections and cross section asymmetries may be analysed model independently. Cross sections depend on four, asymmetries on two free parameters. As an example, I discuss the model independent $Z$ boson mass determination from the $Z$ line shape and compare it to the Standard Model approach.
The results of a next-to-leading order calculation of heavy quark production in longitudinally polarized photon-nucleon collisions are presented. At c.m. energy $\sqrt{S}=10$ GeV, for $\vec γ+\vec p \to c+X$, cross sections differential in the transverse momentum and rapidity of the charmed quark $c$ and the corresponding asymmetries are presented; also, as functions of $\sqrt{S}$, integrated cross sections, $K$-factors and the corresponding asymmetries are given. Errors in the asymmetries are estimated and the possibility to distinguish between three scerarios differing essentially in the pol…
We introduce a class of asymmetries sensitive to the spin and CP properties of the new boson discovered by the ATLAS and CMS experiments. These asymmetries can be measured in the four-lepton final state, and are defined by integrating the invariant masses of the lepton pairs over specified ranges. We outline a program of measurements using initial LHC data to determine the quantum numbers and coupling structure, provide analytic expressions for decay widths in several representative models, and discuss what can be determined using the available data. As examples, we show how the combination of…
In the Standard Model the process $q\bar{q}\rightarrow q\bar{q}V$ (where $V=W^\pm,Z^0$ or $γ$) can occur via gluon exchange and also via $W^\pm$ or $Z^0$ exchange. The corresponding chromodynamic and electroweak amplitudes can interfere with one another. These interference cross sections are largest when the exchanged $W^\pm$ or $Z^0$ is on-shell when they are also odd under parity. Interference cross sections computed using helicity-amplitude techniques are presented for all interesting subprocesses as well as for the processes $q\bar{q}\rightarrow q\bar{q} l\bar{l}$ in which the lepton pair …
Many extensions of the standard model predict the existence of extra neutral vector bosons, generically referred as $Z^\prime$. This boson may be discovered at the LHC but in this case it will be necessary to study the respective parameters in order to discriminate to which model it belongs to. This is a task for a much clean lepton linear collider as the future ILC. In this paper we develop an exemplary study of the capability of several asymmetries on and off $Z^\prime$ peak in discriminating among those extensions with (almost) no ambiguities.
We study CP sensitive observables in neutralino production e+e- -> neutralino_i neutralino_j and the subsequent two-body decays of the neutralino neutralino_i -> neutralino_n Z and of the Z boson Z -> l \bar l (q \bar q). We identify the CP odd elements of the Z boson density matrix and propose CP sensitive triple-product asymmetries. We calculate these observables and the cross sections in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with complex parameters μand M_1 for an e+e- linear collider with \sqrt{s}=800 GeV and longitudinally polarized beams. We show that the asymmetries can reach 3% for…
We study chargino production at a muon collider with longitudinally polarized beams and center of mass energies around the heavy neutral Higgs boson resonances. We show that the interference of the CP even and CP odd Higgs bosons can be analyzed using the energy distributions of the lepton or W boson from the chargino two-body decays \tildeχ^\pm_j\to\ell^\mp\tildeν_\ell or \tildeχ^\pm_j \to W^\pm \neutralino_1, respectively. The energy distributions depend on the longitudinal polarization of the decaying chargino, which are correlated to the muon beam polarizations. We define asymmetries in th…
We present a Monte Carlo (MC) study of $W^{\pm}$ and $Z_{0}$ production of longitudinally polarized proton collisions at a center of mass (CMS) energy of $500\,{\rm GeV}$. All results were obtained with the SPHINX MC code. We consider two different types of polarized parton distributions with large and small gluon polarization. Various spin asymmetries are found to be sensitive to the shape of the polarized gluon distribution between $0.1\stackrel{<}{\sim}x\stackrel{<}{\sim}0.5$. The asymmetries are approximately constant with respect to the transverse momentum carried by the $W^{\pm}$ and $Z_…
Longitudinally polarized, unpolarized and forward-backward mass differential cross sections for Drell-Yan lepton-pair production by arbitrary vector bosons are calculated in next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD. Analytical results are presented in a form valid for all consistent $n$-dimensional regularization schemes, with the mass factorization scheme kept general. NLO predictions for all Drell-Yan type processes ($W^\pm$, $Z$ and $γ^*$) at BNL's relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) are made using polarized parton distributions which fit the recent deep-inelastic scattering data. These are exami…
We present calculations of cross sections and spin asymmetries in single-inclusive reactions in pp scattering. We discuss next-to-leading order predictions as well as all-order soft-gluon threshold resummations.
We study the cross section for vector boson ($W^{\pm}/Z^0/γ^*$) production in polarized nucleon-nucleon collisions for low transverse momentum of the observed vector boson. For the case where one measures the transverse momentum and azimuthal angle of the vector bosons, we present the cross sections and the associated spin asymmetries in terms of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) at tree level within the TMD factorization formalism. To assess the feasibility of experimental measurements, we estimate the spin asymmetries for $W^{\pm}/Z^0$ boson production in pol…
The study of charge asymmetry of W bosons in the process \egam\to eWW can be a tool for discovery of strong interaction in Higgs sector at energies that are lower than it is necessary for observation of resonances caused by this strong interaction.
We propose a CP-violating source in the charged Higgs sector of a 3-Higgs Doublet Model (3HDM) that will contribute to three CP-asymmetry observables for low energy processes. In the context of such a 3HDM, a measurement of one of the specific asymmetry observables (i.e., $\bar{B} \to X_{s+d} γ$) could obtain up to 2.5% or more, which would give a 5$σ$ evidence for physics Beyond the SM (BSM) from the full BELLE II data set. In addition to these CP-violating observables, the current measurements of Electron Dipole Moments (EDMs) constrain the available parameter region of the CP-violating 3HDM…
We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the cross section and longitudinal spin asymmetry in single-inclusive charged-lepton production, pp -> l X, at RHIC, where the lepton is produced in the decay of an electroweak gauge boson. Our calculation is presented in terms of a multi-purpose Monte-Carlo integration program that may be readily used to include experimental spin asymmetry data in a global analysis of helicity parton densities. We perform a toy global analysis, studying the impact of anticipated RHIC data on our knowledge about the polarized anti-quark distributions.
We discuss the double-spin asymmetries in transversely polarized Drell-Yan process, calculating all-order gluon resummation corrections up to the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. This resummation is relevant when the transverse-momentum $Q_T$ of the produced lepton pair is small, and reproduces the (fixed-order) next-to-leading QCD corrections upon integrating over $Q_T$. The resummation corrections in $p\bar{p}$-collision behave differently compared with $pp$-collision cases, and are small at the kinematics in the proposed GSI experiments. This fact allows us to predict large value of th…
We examine the effect of the R parity odd renormalizable interactions on flavor non-diagonal rates and CP violation asymmetries in the production of slepton pairs at $e^- - e^+$ leptonic colliders, for center of mass energies spanning the interval from the Z-boson pole up to 1000 GeV. The lepton number violating interactions, associated with the lepton number violating coupling constants, are assumed to incorporate CP odd complex phases. The flavor changing rates are controlled by tree level amplitudes and quadratic products of different R parity violating coupling constants and the CP asymmet…
An attempt is made to understand the z-dependence of the azimuthal single spin asymmetries observed by the HERMES collaboration in terms of chiral models based on effective quark and Goldstone boson degrees of freedom. The effects of respectively neglecting and considering Gaussian intrinsic parton transverse momenta and the Sivers effect are explored. Predictions for the transverse target polarization experiment at HERMES are presented.
We discuss the double-spin asymmetries in transversely polarized Drell-Yan process, calculating all-order gluon resummation corrections up to the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. This resummation is relevant when the transverse-momentum Q_T of the produced lepton pair is small, and reproduces the (fixed-order) next-to-leading QCD corrections upon integrating over Q_T. The resummation corrections behave differently between pp- and p\bar{p}-collision cases and are small for the latter case at the kinematics in the proposed GSI experiments. This fact allows us to predict large value of the d…
We discuss the use of fermion polarization for studying neutral Higgs bosons at a photon collider. To this aim we construct polarization asymmetries which can isolate the contribution of a Higgs boson $ϕ$ in $γγ\to f \bar f$, $f=τ/t$, from that of the QED continuum. This can help in getting information on the $γγϕ$ coupling in case $ϕ$ is a CP eigenstate. We also construct CP-violating asymmetries which can probe CP mixing in case $ϕ$ has indeterminate CP. Furthermore, we take the MSSM with CP violation as an example to demonstrate the potential of these asymmetries in a numerical analysis. We…
We discuss transverse double-spin asymmetries for dimuon production at small transverse-momentum $Q_T$ in $pp$ and $p\bar{p}$ collisions. All order resummation of large logarithms relevant in small $Q_T$ region is performed at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy, and asymmetries at RHIC, J-PARC and GSI are calculated.
We present an analysis of the enhancement of CP-violating charge asymmetries in $K \rightarrow 3π$ decays. Calculations of decay amplitudes are performed on the basis of bosonized strong and weak Lagrangians derived from QCD-motivated quark Lagrangians. We show that the interplay of fourth-order contributions of chiral Lagrangians for strong interactions and penguin operators in weak interactions significantly enhances the charge asymmetries.
After we have limited elements of the right-handed CKM matrix to satisfy the bounds for CP violation epsilon_K in K meson systems, the right-handed charged current gauge boson W_R is shown to substantially affect CP asymmetries in B systems. A joint chi-squared analysis is applied to B-Bbar mixing to constrain the right-handed CKM matrix elements. In (sin(2alpha), sin(2beta)), (x_s, sin(gamma)), (rho-eta), and (x_s, sin(2phi_s)) plots in the presence of the W_R boson, we find larger allowed experimental regions that can distinguish this model from the standard model.
CP violation in H^\pm decays into the three possible decay modes into ordinary particles, 1) H^\pm \to tb, 2) H^\pm \to ντand 3) H^\pm \to W^\pm h^0 is considered. Analytic expressions and numerical results for the CP violating decay rate asymmetries in the MSSM are obtained. Increasing \tanβthe asymmetries for the fermionic decays, H^\pm \to tb and H^\pm \to ντ, decrease and it increases for H^\pm \to W^\pm h^0. The asymmetry of H^\pm \to tb is most sensitive to the phase of $A_t and can go up to 20%, the asymmetries of 2) and 3) depend mainly on the phases of A_τand M_1. The asymmetry of 2) …
Leptonic flavor-changing $H^0$ decays with branching ratios of the order of $10^{-5}-10^{-6}$ may constitute an interesting framework when looking for large $CP$-violating effects. We show that leptonic $CP$~asymmetries of an intermediate $H^0$ boson can be fairly large in natural scenarios of the minimal Standard Model ($SM$) with right-handed neutrinos, at a level that may be probed at future $H^0$~factories.
We present next-to-leading order predictions for double transverse-spin asymmetries in Drell--Yan dilepton production initiated by proton--antiproton scattering. The kinematic region of the proposed PAX experiment at GSI: $30\lesssim{s}\lesssim200\GeV^2$ and $2\lesssim{M}\lesssim7\GeV$ is examined. The Drell--Yan asymmetries turn out to be large, in the range 20--40%. Measuring these asymmetries would provide the cleanest determination of the quark transversity distributions.
A complete next-to-leading order calculation of longitudinally polarized heavy quark photoproduction is presented. All results of the purturbative calculation are given in detail. For reactions and energies of interest cross sections differential in the transverse momentum and rapidity of the heavy quark, total cross sections and the corresponding asymmetries are given. Errors in the asymmetries are estimated and the possibility to distinguish between various scerarios of the polarized gluon distribution is discussed. Our results are compared with other related publications.
CP violation in supersymmetry can give rise to rate asymmetries in the decays of supersymmetric particles. In this work we compute the rate asymmetries for the three-body chargino decays \tildeχ^\pm_2 \to \tildeχ^\pm_1 HH, \tildeχ^\pm_2 \to \tildeχ^\pm_1 ZZ, \tildeχ^\pm_2 \to \tildeχ^\pm_1 W^+ W^- and \tildeχ^\pm_2 \to tildeχ^\pm_1 ZH. Each of the decays contains contributions mediated by neutral Higgs bosons that can possibly go on shell. Such contributions receive a resonant enhancement; furthermore, the strong phases required for the CP asymmetries come from the widths of the exchanged Higg…
A new handed interaction between quarks could be at the origin of some small parity violating effects in the inclusive production of one-jet in polarized $pp$ collisions. This interaction could originate from compositeness or from the presence of a new massive vector boson. The measurement of such asymmetries could be performed within a few years by using the RHIC collider as a polarized proton-proton collider.
We present the next-to-leading order full results in Chiral Perturbation Theory for the charged Kaon K --> 3 pi slope g CP violating asymmetries. We discuss the constraints that a measurement of these asymmetries would impose on the Standard Model results of epsilon_K' and search for new physics. We also study the kind of information that such measurement can provide on Im G_8, Im (e^2 G_E) and higher order weak couplings.
We study possible new physics interactions in the $ZZH$ vertex contributing to the Higgsstrahlung process $e^+ e^- \to ZH$ at proposed future $e^+e^-$ colliders using the polarization of the $Z$ as a probe. We calculate the spin density matrix of the $Z$ for the process and determine the eight independent polarization parameters of the $Z$ boson which have the potential to constrain the anomalous couplings. We study angular asymmetries using the decay leptons from the $Z$ boson which are simply related to the polarization observables. We also estimate the limits that can be placed on the anoma…
We study the anomalous $W^+W^-V$ ($V=γ,Z$) couplings in $e^+e^-\to W^+W^-$ using the complete set of polarization observables of $W$ boson with longitudinally polarized beams. We use most general Lorentz invariant form factors parametrization as well as $SU(2)\times U(1)$ invariant dimension $6$ effective operators for the effective $W^+W^-V$ couplings. We estimate simultaneous limits on the anomalous couplings in both the parametrizations using cross section, forward backward asymmetry and polarization observables of $W$ boson with different kinematical cuts using Markov-Chain--Monte-Carlo (M…
The production of Drell-Yan pairs in the double polarized mode of HERA-$\vec{\rm N}$ is studied at next-to-leading order in QCD. It is found that a measurement of this observable could yield vital information on the polarization of the light quark sea in the nucleon.
We perform a comprehensive analysis of target mass corrections (TMCs) to spin-averaged structure functions and asymmetries at next-to-leading order. Several different prescriptions for TMCs are considered, including the operator product expansion, and various approximations to it, collinear factorization, and xi-scaling. We assess the impact of each of these on a number of observables, such as the neutron to proton F_2 structure function ratio, and parity-violating electron scattering asymmetries for protons and deuterons which are sensitive to gamma-Z interference effects. The corrections fro…
We study the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to the partonic cross sections relevant for the process pp -> W^+- X at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). At RHIC, polarized protons are available, and spin asymmetries for this process will be used for precise measurements of the up and down quark and anti-quark distributions in the proton. The corrections arise near the threshold for the partonic reaction and are associated with soft-gluon emission. We perform the resummation to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, for the rapidity-differential cross sectio…
Tagged jet measurements provide a promising experimental channel to quantify the similarities and differences in the mechanisms of jet production in proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions. We present the first calculation of the transverse momentum asymmetry of $Z^0/γ^*$-tagged jet events and the momentum imbalance of $γ$-tagged jet events in $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV reactions at the LHC. Our results combine the ${\cal O}(G_Fα_s^2)$, ${\cal O}(G_Fα_s^2)$ perturbative cross sections with the radiative and collisional processes that modify parton showers in the presence of dense QCD matter. We …
We update the CP-violating asymmetries in K^+ -> 3 pi. In particular we study Delta g_C and Delta g_N -the asymmetries in the slope g. We emphasize its complementarity to the direct CP-violation parameter epsilon_K' and the large sensitivity to the size of the imaginary part of the octet coupling Im G_8 at lowest order in CHPT. We also give the prospects of a full calculation at next-to-leading order of this and other CP-violating asymmetries which will be presented elsewhere.
We study some New Physics effects on the hadronic decays of the Top quark, like t-> b bbar c, and on a forward-backward-like CP even asymmetry A_t constructed in such a way that it is zero in the SM. We find that an anomalous right-handed contribution of the effective tbW vertex may induce an asymmetry A_t of the order of 20 %. A light W' boson with pure right handed couplings tdW' may induce an asymmetry A_t of the same order of magnitude.
A simple model-independent formula for cross-section asymmetries $A$ in fermion-pair production is derived, which may be used for the analysis of LEP~1 data, $A = \sum_n A_n (s - M_Z^2)^n$. The coefficient $A_0$ depends on the $Z$ boson exchange, $A_1$ additionally on the $γZ$ interference, while the higher-order contributions are practically redundant. QED corrections are taken into account, and relations to other approaches are indicated.
