We show Akari data, Herschel data and data from the SCUBA2 camera on JCMT, of molecular clouds. We focus on pre-stellar cores within the clouds. We present Akari data of the L1147-1157 ring in Cepheus and show how the data indicate that the cores are being externally heated. We present SCUBA2 and Herschel data of the Ophiuchus region and show how the environment is also affecting core evolution in this region. We discuss the effects of the magnetic field in the Lupus I region, and how this lends support to a model for the formation and evolution of cores in filamentary molecular clouds.
We discuss a new IRAS Faint Source Catalog galaxy redshift catalogue (RIFSCz) which incorporates data from Galex, SDSS, 2MASS, WISE, Akari and Planck. Akari fluxes are consistent with photometry from other far infrared and submillimetre missions provided an aperture correction is applied. Results from the Hermes-SWIRE survey in Lockman are also discussed briefly, and the strong contrast between the galaxy populations selected at 60 and 500 mu is summarized.
There is significant scientific value to be gained from combining AKARI fluxes with data at other far-IR wavelengths from the IRAS and Herschel missions. To be able to do this we must ensure that there are no systematic differences between the datasets that need to be corrected before the fluxes are compatible with each other. One such systematic effect identified in the BSCv1 data is the issue of beam corrections. We determine these for the BSCv2 data by correlating ratios of appropriate IRAS and AKARI bands with the difference in 2MASS J band extended and point source magnitudes for sources …
Galactic infrared (IR) bubbles, which have shell-like structures in the mid-IR wavelengths, are known to contain massive stars near their centers. IR bubbles in inner Galactic regions ($|$l$|\leq$ 65$^{\circ}$, $|$b$|\leq$ 1$^{\circ}$) have so far been studied well to understand the massive star formation mechanisms. In this study, we expand the research area to the whole Galactic plane (0$^{\circ}\leq$ l $<$360$^{\circ}$, $|$b$|\leq$ 5$^{\circ}$), using the AKARI all-sky survey data. We limit our study on large bubbles with angular radii of $>1'$ to reliably identify and characterize them. Fo…
Submillimetre and millimetre-wave surveys with Herschel and the South Pole Telescope have revolutionised the discovery of strong gravitational lenses. Their follow-ups have been greatly facilitated by the multi-wavelength supplementary data in the survey fields. The forthcoming Euclid optical/near-infrared space telescope will also detect strong gravitational lenses in large numbers, and orbital constraints are likely to require placing its deep survey at the North Ecliptic Pole (the natural deep field for a wide class of ground-based and space-based observatories including AKARI, JWST and SPI…
Galactic infrared (IR) bubbles, which can be seen as shell-like structures at mid-IR wavelengths, are known to possess massive stars within their shell boundaries. In our previous study, Hanaoka et al. (2019) expanded the research area to the whole Galactic plane ($0^{\circ} \leq l \leq 360^{\circ}$, $|b| \leq 5^{\circ}$) and studied systematic differences in the shell morphology and the IR luminosity of the IR bubbles between inner and outer Galactic regions. In this study, utilizing high spatial-resolution data of AKARI and WISE in the mid-IR and Herschel in the far-IR, we investigate the sp…
We present observations of L1155 and L1148 in the Cepheus molecular cloud, taken using the FIS instrument on the Akari satellite. We compare these data to submillimetre data taken using the SCUBA camera on the JCMT, and far-infrared data taken with the ISOPHOT camera on board the ISO satellite. All of the data show a relation between the position of the peak of emission and the wavelength for the core of L1155. We interpret this as a temperature gradient. We fit modified blackbody curves to the spectral energy distributions at two positions in the core and see that the central core in L1155 (L…
Evolutionary properties of infrared (IR) luminous galaxies are important keys to understand dust-obscured star formation history and galaxy evolution. Based on the near- to mid-IR imaging with 9 continuous filters of AKARI space telescope, we present the characteristics of dusty star-forming (SF) galalxies showing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features observed by the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) wide field survey of AKARI and Herschel. All the sample galaxies from the AKARI/NEP-Wide data are selected based both on the Herschel/SPIRE 250 μm detection and optical spectroscopic redshift dat…
L1642 is one of the two high galactic latitude (|b| > 30deg) clouds confirmed to have active star formation. We examine the properties of this cloud, especially the large-scale structure, dust properties, and compact sources in different stages of star formation. We present high-resolution far-infrared and submm observations with the Herschel and AKARI satellites and mm observations with the AzTEC/ASTE telescope, which we combined with archive data from near- and mid-infrared (2MASS, WISE) to mm observations (Planck). The Herschel observations, combined with other data, show a sequence of obje…
We present a comparative study of CO and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission toward a region including the massive star-forming regions of NGC 6334 and NGC 6357. We use the NANTEN $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1--0) data and the $AKARI$ 9 $μ$m All-Sky diffuse map in order to evaluate the calibration accuracy of the $AKARI$ data. We confirm that the overall CO distribution shows a good spatial correspondence with the PAH emission, and their intensities exhibit a good power-law correlation with a spatial resolution down to 4$'$ over the region of 10$^\circ$$\times$10$^\circ$. We also reveal poorer …
We present the J and H-band source catalog covering the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole field. Filling the gap between the optical data from other follow-up observations and mid-infrared (MIR) data from AKARI, our near-infrared (NIR) data provides contiguous wavelength coverage from optical to MIR. For the J and H-band imaging, we used the FLoridA Multi-object Imaging Near-ir Grism Observational Spectrometer (FLAMINGOS) on the Kitt Peak National Observatory 2.1m telescope covering a 5.1 deg2 area down to a 5 sigma depth of ~21.6 mag and ~21.3 mag (AB) for J and H-band with an astrometric accuracy of…
We present the AKARI mid-infrared diffuse map of an area of about 4 deg x 3 deg near the Galactic center in the 9 um band. The band intensity is mostly attributed to the aromatic hydrocarbon infrared emissions of carbonaceous grains at wavelengths of 6.2, 7,7, 8.6, and 11.3 um. We detect the 9 um emission structures extending from the Galactic plane up to the latitude of about 2.5 deg, which have spatial correspondence to the molecular loops revealed by the NANTEN 12CO (J=1-0) observations. We find that the surface brightness at 9 um is suppressed near the foot points of the CO loops. The rati…
Aims. We investigate the properties of hydrocarbon grains in the galactic superwind of M 82. Methods. With AKARI, we performed near-infrared (2.5 - 4.5 um) spectroscopic observations of 34 regions in M 82 including its northern and southern halos. Results. Many of the spectra show strong emission at 3.3 um due to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and relatively weak features at 3.4 - 3.6 um due to aliphatic hydrocarbons. In particular, we clearly detect the PAH 3.3 um emission and the 3.4 - 3.6 um features in halo regions, which are located at a distance of 2 kpc away from the galactic c…
We present the results of near-infrared (2.5--5.4um) long-slit spectroscopy of the extended green object (EGO) G318.05+0.09 with AKARI. Two distinct sources are found in the slit. The brighter source has strong red continuum emission with H2O ice, CO2 ice, and CO gas and ice absorption features at 3.0, 4.25um, 4.67um, respectively, while the other greenish object shows peculiar emission that has double peaks at around 4.5 and 4.7um. The former source is located close to the ultra compact HII region IRAS 14498-5856 and is identified as an embedded massive young stellar object. The spectrum of t…
We present AKARI near- to far-infrared images of the nearby edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 3079 in 10 photometric bands. The spectral energy distribution consists of continuum emission from dust with a single temperature of 28-33 K together with strong mid-infrared emission features from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). We derive the dust masses of 5.6x10^6 M_sun and 1.4x10^7 M_sun for the central 4 kpc region and the whole galaxy, respectively, and find that a gas-to-dust mass ratio is unusually high in the central region (\sim 1100) and even for the whole galaxy (\sim 860). The ratio of t…
With the Infrared Camera on board AKARI, we carried out near-infrared (2.5-5.0 micron) spectroscopy of the central kiloparsec region of the barred spiral galaxy, NGC1097, categorized as Seyfert 1 with a circumnuclear starburst ring. Our observations mapped the area of ~50"*10" with the resolution of ~5", covering about a half of the ring and the galactic center. As a result, we spatially resolve the starburst ring in the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon 3.3 micron, the aliphatic hydrocarbon 3.4-3.6 micron features, and the hydrogen Br alpha 4.05 micron emission. They exhibit spatial distributio…
We present 2.5-5.0 $μ$m spectra of 83 nearby ($0.002\,<\,z\,<\,0.48$) and bright ($K<14$mag) type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) taken with the Infrared Camera (IRC) on board $\it{AKARI}$. The 2.5-5.0 $μ$m spectral region contains emission lines such as Br$β$ (2.63 $μ$m), Br$α$ (4.05 $μ$m), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH; 3.3 $μ$m), which can be used for studying the black hole (BH) masses and star formation activities in the host galaxies of AGNs. The spectral region also suffers less dust extinction than in the ultra violet (UV) or optical wavelengths, which may provide an unobsc…
We present the distribution map of the far-infrared [OIII] 88um line emission around the 30 Doradus (30 Dor) region in the Large Magellanic Cloud obtained with the Fourier Transform Spectrometer of the Far-Infrared Surveyor onboard AKARI. The map reveals that the [OIII] emission is widely distributed by more than 10' around the super star cluster R136, implying that the 30 Dor region is affluent with interstellar radiation field hard enough to ionize O^{2+}. The observed [OIII] line intensities are as high as (1-2) x 10^{-6} W m^{-2} sr^{-1} on the peripheral regions 4'-5' away from the center…
Far-infrared observations provide crucial data for the investigation and characterisation of the properties of dusty material in the Interstellar Medium (ISM), since most of its energy is emitted between ~100 and 200 um. We present the first all-sky image from a sensitive all-sky survey using the Japanese AKARI satellite, in the wavelength range 50 -- 180 um. Covering >99% of the sky in four photometric bands with four filters centred at 65 um, 90 um, 140 um, and 160 um wavelengths, this achieved spatial resolutions from 1 to 2 arcmin and a detection limit of <10 MJy sr-1, with absolute and re…
We present the stellar population and ionized-gas outflow properties of ultra-luminous IR galaxies (ULIRGs) at $z=$ 0.1-1.0, which are selected from AKARI FIR all-sky survey. We construct a catalog of 1077 ULIRGs to examine feedback effect after major mergers. 202 out of the 1077 ULIRGs are spectroscopically identified by SDSS and Subaru/FOCAS observations. Thanks to deeper depth and higher resolution of AKARI compared to the previous IRAS survey, and reliable identification from WISE MIR pointing, the sample is unique in identifying optically-faint (i$\sim$20) IR-bright galaxies, which could …
We investigate the structure of the interstellar medium (ISM) and identify the location of possible embedded excitation sources from far-infrared (FIR) line and mid-infrared continuum emission maps. We carried out imaging spectroscopic observations of four giant Galactic star-forming regions with the Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) onboard AKARI. We obtained [OIII] 88 micron and [CII] 158 micron line intensity maps of all the regions: G3.270-0.101, G333.6-0.2, NGC3603, and M17. For G3.270-0.101, we obtained high-spatial-resolution [OIII] 88 micron line-emission maps and a FIR continuum ma…
In the evolutionary path of interstellar medium inquiry, many new species of interstellar dust have been modeled and discovered. The modes by which these species interact and evolve are beginning to be understood, but in recent years a peculiar new feature has appeared in microwave surveys. Anomalous microwave emission (AME), appearing between 10 and 90 GHz, has been correlated with thermal dust emission, leading to the popular suggestion that this anomaly is electric dipole emission from spinning dust. The observed frequencies suggest that spinning grains should be on the order of 1 nm in siz…
AKARI/Infrared Camera (IRC) Point Source Catalog provides a large amount of flux data at {\it S9W} ($9\ {\rm μm}$) and {\it L18W} ($18\ {\rm μm}$) bands. With the goal of constructing Star-Formation Rate(SFR) calculations using IRC data, we analyzed an IR selected GALEX-SDSS-2MASS-AKARI(IRC/Far-Infrared Surveyor) sample of 153 nearby galaxies. The far-infrared fluxes were obtained from AKARI diffuse maps to correct the underestimation for extended sources raised by the point-spread function photometry. SFRs of these galaxies were derived by the spectral energy distribution fitting program CIGA…
In this proceedings application of a fuzzy Support Vector Machine (FSVM) learning algorithm, to classify mid-infrared (MIR) sources from the AKARI NEP Deep field into three classes: stars, galaxies and AGNs, is presented. FSVM is an improved version of the classical SVM algorithm, incorporating measurement errors into the classification process; this is the first successful application of this algorithm in the astronomy. We created reliable catalogues of galaxies, stars and AGNs consisting of objects with MIR measurements, some of them with no optical counterparts. Some examples of identified …
We present a comparison of the SCUBA Half Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES) at 450, 850 and 1100 microns with deep guaranteed time 15 microns AKARI FU-HYU survey data and Spitzer guaranteed time data at 3.6-24 microns in the Lockman Hole East. The AKARI data was analysed using bespoke software based in part on the drizzling and minimum-variance matched filtering developed for SHADES, and was cross calibrated against Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) fluxes. Our stacking analyses find AKARI 15um galaxies with >~200 microJy contribute >10% of the 450 micron background, but only <4% of the 1100…
We present a far-infrared all-sky atlas from a sensitive all-sky survey using the Japanese $AKARI$ satellite. The survey covers $> 99$% of the sky in four photometric bands centred at 65 $μ$m, 90 $μ$m, 140 $μ$m, and 160 $μ$m with spatial resolutions ranging from 1 to 1.5 arcmin. These data provide crucial information for the investigation and characterisation of the properties of dusty material in the Interstellar Medium (ISM), since significant portion of its energy is emitted between $\sim$50 and 200 $μ$m. The large-scale distribution of interstellar clouds, their thermal dust temperatures a…
We present a near- to mid-infrared point source catalog of 5 photometric bands at 3.2, 7, 11, 15 and 24 um for a 10 deg2 area of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) obtained with the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard the AKARI satellite. To cover the survey area the observations were carried out at 3 separate seasons from 2006 May to June, 2006 October to December, and 2007 March to July. The 10-sigma limiting magnitudes of the present survey are 17.9, 13.8, 12.4, 9.9, and 8.6 mag at 3.2, 7, 11, 15 and 24 um, respectively. The photometric accuracy is estimated to be about 0.1 mag at 3.2 um and 0.06--…
We present the survey strategy and the data characteristics of the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Wide Survey of AKARI. The survey was carried out for about one year starting from May 2006 with 9 passbands from 2.5 to 24 micron and the areal coverage of about 5.8 sq. degrees centered on NEP. The survey depth reaches to 21.8 AB magnitude near infrared (NIR) bands, and ~ 18.6 AB maggnitude at the mid infrared (MIR) bands such as 15 and 18 micron. The total number of sources detected in this survey is about 104,000, with more sources in NIR than in the MIR. We have cross matched infrared sources with …
