We study the scattering of infrared light by small dielectric core-shell particles taking a sapphire sphere with a CaO core as an example. The extinction efficiency of such a particle shows two intense series of resonances attached, respectively, to in-phase and out-of-phase multipolar polarization-induced surface charges build-up, respectively, at the core-shell and the shell-vacuum interface. Both series, the character of the former may be labelled bonding and the character of the latter antibonding, give rise to anomalous scattering. For a given particle radius and filling factor the Poynting vector field shows therefore around two wave numbers the complex topology of this type of light scattering. Inside the particle the topology depends on the character of the resonance. The dissipation of energy inside the particle also reflects the core-shell structure. It depends on the resonance and shows strong spatial variations.
We investigate theoretically and numerically the photonic band structure in the optical domain of an array of core-shell metal-semiconductor nanowires. Corresponding negative-index photonic bands are calculated, showing isotropic equifrequency surfaces. The effective (negative) electric permittivity and magnetic permeability, retrieved from S parameters, are used to compare the performance of such nanowire arrays with homogeneous media in canonical examples, such as refraction through a prism and flat-lens focusing. Very good agreement is found, indeed confirming the effective medium behavior …
We theoretically investigate the role of the dielectric mismatch between materials on the energy levels and recombination energies of a core-shell nanowire. Our results demonstrate that when the dielectric constant of the core material is lower than that of the shell material, the self-image potential pushes the charge carriers towards the core-shell interface, in such a way that the ideal confinement model is no longer suitable. The effects of this interfacial confinement on the electronic properties of such wires, as well as on its response to applied magnetic fields, are discussed.
In this paper it is shown that the enhancement factor of the local electric field in metal covered ellipsoidal nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric host matrix has two maxima at two different frequencies. The second maximum for the metal covered inclusions with large dielectric core (small metal fraction $p$) is comparatively large. This maximum strongly depends on the depolarization factor of the core $L_{z}^{(1)}$, keeping that of the shell $L_{z}^{(2)}$ constant and is less than $L_{z}^{(1)}$. If the frequency of the external radiation approaches the frequency of surface plasmons of a met…
Large scale simulations are performed by means of the transfer-matrix method to reveal optimal conditions for metal-dielectric core-shell particles to induce the largest fluorescence on their surfaces. With commonly used plasmonic cores (Au and Ag) and dielectric shells (SiO2, Al2O3, ZnO), optimal core and shell radii are determined to reach maximum fluorescence enhancement for each wavelength within 550~850 nm (Au core) and 390~500 nm (Ag core) bands, in both air and aqueous hosts. The peak value of the maximum achievable fluorescence enhancement factors of core-shell nanoparticles, taken ove…
We suggest to exploit dielectric-metal core-shell nanostructures for efficient resonant and yet broadband absorption of infrared radiation with deeply subwavelength configurations. Realizing that nanostructures would efficiently absorb radiation only when their dielectric properties match those of the environment and making use of the effective medium approach, we develop the design strategy using core-shell nanostructures with very thin shells made of poor metals, i.e., metals having real and imaginary parts of their dielectric permittivities of the same order of magnitude. Analyzing in detai…
We show that bulk rhenium diselenide, ReSe2 is characterized by record high value of the refractive index exceeding 5 in near-infrared frequency range. We use back focal plane reflection spectroscopy to extract the components of the ReSe2 permittivity tensor and reveal its extreme biaxial anisotropy. We also demonstrate the good agreement between the experimental data and the predictions of the density functional theory. The combination of the large refractive index and giant optical anisotropy makes ReSe2 a perspective material for all-dielectric nanophotonics in the near-infrared frequency r…
Sub-wavelength confinement of mid-infrared light can be achieved exploiting the metal-like optical response of polar dielectric crystals in their Reststrahlen spectral region, where they support evanescent modes termed surface phonon polaritons. In the past few years the investigation of phonon polaritons localised in nanoresonators and layered heterostructures has enjoyed remarkable success, highlighting them as a promising platform for mid-infrared nanophotonic applications. Here we prove that the standard local dielectric description of phonon polaritons in nanometric objects fails due to t…
Heat transfer from irradiated metallic nanoparticles is relevant to a broad array of applications ranging from water desalination to photoacoustics. The efficacy of such processes relies on the ability of these nanoparticles to absorb the pulsed illuminating light and to quickly transfer energy to the environment. Here we show that compared to homogeneous gold nanoparticles having the same size, gold-silica core-shell nanoparticles enable heat transfers to liquid water that are faster. We reach this conclusion by considering both analytical and numerical calculations. The key factor explaining…
We have investigated the transition from strong to ultra-strong coupling regime between a mid-infrared intersubband excitation and the fundamental mode of a metal-dielectric-metal microcavity. The ultra-strong coupling regime is demonstrated up to room temperature for a wavelength of $11.7 μ$m by using 260 nm thick cavities, which impose an extreme sub-wavelength confinement. By varying the doping of our structures we show that the experimental signature of the transition to the ultra-strong coupling regime is the opening of a photonic gap in the polariton dispersion. The width of this gap dep…
High-permittivity dielectric particles with resonant magnetic properties are being explored as constitutive elements of new metamaterials and devices in the microwave regime. Magnetic properties of low-loss dielectric nanoparticles in the visible or infrared are not expected due to intrinsic low refractive index of optical materials in these regimes. Here we analyze the dipolar electric and magnetic response of loss-less dielectric spheres made of moderate permittivity materials. For low material refractive index there are no sharp resonances due to strong overlapping between different multipo…
Using semi-analytical models we calculate the energy, effective Bohr radius and radiative lifetime of neutral excitons confined in CdSe colloidal nanoplatelets (NPLs). The excitonic properties are largely governed by the electron-hole in-plane correlation, which in NPLs is enhanced by the quasi-two-dimensional motion and the dielectric mismatch with the organic environment. In NPLs with lateral size $L \gtrsim 20$ nm the exciton behavior is essentially that in a quantum well, with superradiance leading to exciton lifetimes of 1 ps or less, only limited by the NPL area. However, for $L < 20$ nm…
The scattering and absorption suppression of the silica microspheres is experimentally achieved by semicontinuous gold shell synthesized on the silica microspheres. These fractal gold shells on the silica spheres are shown to have significant extinction in the visible and mid-infrared spectral range. It is found that the silica scattering peak in the visible and the relative contribution of the vibrational stretching band in the infrared gradually decreases with increasing of the gold coverage.

ZnTe/CdSe/(Zn,Mg)Te core/double-shell nanowires are grown by molecular beam epitaxy by employing the vapor-liquid-solid growth mechanism assisted with gold catalysts. A photoluminescence study of these structures reveals the presence of an optical emission in the near infrared. We assign this emission to the spatially indirect exciton recombination at the ZnTe/CdSe type II interface. This conclusion is confirmed by the observation of a significant blue-shift of the emission energy with an increasing excitation fluence induced by the electron-hole separation at the interface. Cathodoluminescenc…
Improved passivation strategies to address the more complex surface structure of large-diameter nanocrystals are critical to the advancement of infrared photodetectors based on colloidal PbS. In this contribution, the performance of short-wave infrared (SWIR) photodiodes fabricated with PbS/PbCl$_x$ (core/shell) nanocrystals versus their PbS-only (core) counterparts are directly compared. Despite their inherently similar bulk properties, devices using PbS cores suffer from shunting and inefficient charge extraction, while core/shell-based devices exhibit greater external quantum efficiencies a…
We report mid-infrared photocurrent spectra of graphene nanoribbon arrays on SiO2 dielectrics showing dual signatures of the substrate interaction. First, hybrid polaritonic modes of graphene plasmons and dielectric surface polar phonons produce a thermal photocurrent in graphene with spectral features that are tunable by gate voltage, nanoribbon width, and light polarization. Secondly, phonon-polaritons associated with the substrate are excited, which indirectly heat up the graphene leading to a graphene photocurrent with fixed spectral features. Models for other commonly used substrates show…
Directing the propagation of near-infrared radiation is a major concern in improving the efficiency of solar cells and thermal insulators. A facile approach to scatter light in the near-infrared region without excessive heating is to embed compact layers with semiconductor particles. The directional scattering by semiconductor@oxide (core@shell) spherical particles (containing Si, InP, TiO$_2$, SiO$_2$, or ZrO$_2$) with a total radius varying from 0.1 to 4.0 μm and in an insulating medium at low volume fraction is investigated using Lorenz-Mie theory and multiscale modelling. The optical respo…
