Let $F_g$ denote a closed oriented surface of genus $g$. A set of simple closed curves is called a filling of $F_g$ if its complement is a disjoint union of discs. The mapping class group $\text{Mod}(F_g)$ of genus $g$ acts on the set of fillings of $F_g$. The union of the curves in a filling forms a graph on the surface which is a so-called decorated fat graph. It is a fact that two fillings of $F_g$ are in the same $\text{Mod}(F_g)$-orbit if and only if the corresponding fat graphs are isomorphic. We prove that any filling of $F_2$ whose complement is a single disc (i.e., a so-called minimal filling) has either three or four closed curves and in each of these two cases, there is a unique such filling up to the action of $\text{Mod}(F_2)$.
We provide a constructive proof to show that the minimum number of discs in the complement of a filling pair of $F_2$ is two. Finally, given positive integers $g$ and $k$ with $(g, k)\neq (2, 1)$, we construct a filling pair of $F_g$ such that the complement is a union of $k$ topological discs.
We provide a calculus for the presentation of closed 3-manifolds via nullhomotopic filling Dehn spheres and we use it to define an invariant of closed 3-manifolds by applying the state-sum machinery. As a potential application of this invariant, we show how to get lower bounds for the Matveev complexity of P2-irreducible closed 3-manifolds. We also describe an easy algorithm for constructing a nullhomotopic filling Dehn sphere of each closed 3-manifold from any of its one-vertex triangulations.
In order to obtain a closed orientable convex projective four-manifold with small positive Euler characteristic, we build an explicit example of convex projective Dehn filling of a cusped hyperbolic four-manifold through a continuous path of projective cone-manifolds.
A filling Dehn sphere $Σ$ in a closed 3-manifold $M$ is a sphere transversely immersed in $M$ that defines a cell decomposition of $M$. Every closed 3-manifold has a filling Dehn sphere. The Montesinos complexity of a $3$-manifold $M$ is defined as the minimal number of triple points among all the filling Dehn spheres of $M$. A sharp upper bound for the Montesinos complexity of the connected sum of two 3-manifolds is given.
We show that after generic filling along a torus boundary component of a 3-manifold, no two closed, 2-sided, essential surfaces become isotopic, and no closed, 2-sided, essential surface becomes inessential. That is, the set of essential surfaces (considered up to isotopy) survives unchanged in all suitably generic Dehn fillings. Furthermore, for all but finitely many non-generic fillings, we show that two essential surfaces can only become isotopic in a constrained way.
We discuss a new approach to computing the standard algebraic operations on homotopy classes of loops in surfaces: the homological intersection number, Goldman's Lie bracket, and the author's Lie cobracket. Our approach uses fillings of the surfaces by certain graphs.
In the closed, non-Haken, hyperbolic class of examples generated by (2p,q) Dehn fillings of Figure 8 knot space, the geometrically incompressible one-sided surfaces are identified by the filling ratio p/q and determined to be unique in all cases. When applied to one-sided Heegaard splittings, this can be used to classify all geometrically incompressible splittings in this class of closed, hyperbolic examples; no analogous classification exists for two-sided Heegaard splittings.
We prove results showing that the existence of essential maps of surfaces in a manifold M' obtained from a 3-manifold M by Dehn filling implies the existence of essential maps of surfaces in M.
In this paper we investigate the distances between Dehn fillings on a hyperbolic 3-manifold that yield 3-manifolds containing essential small surfaces including non-orientable surfaces. Especially we study the situations where one filling creates an essential sphere or projective plane, and the other creates an essential sphere, projective plane, annulus, Moebius band, torus or Klein bottle, all 11 pairs of such non-hyperbolic manifolds.
Let $S$ be a closed, genus $g$ surface. The space of geodesic currents on $S$ encompasses the set of closed curves up to homotopy, as well as Teichmüller space, and many other spaces of structures on $S$. We show that one can define a mapping class group equivariant, length-minimizing projection from the set of filling geodesic currents down to Teichmüller space, and prove some basic properties of this projection to show that it is well-behaved.
In this short note, we construct a minimally intersecting pair of simple closed curves that fill a genus 2 surface with an odd, greater than 3, number of punctures. This finishes the determination of minimally intersecting filling pairs for all surfaces completing the work of Aougab-Huang and Aougab-Taylor.
Let $S$ be a Riemann surface with a puncture $x$. Let $a\subset S$ be a simple closed geodesic. In this paper, we show that for any pseudo-Anosov map $f$ of $S$ that is isotopic to the identity on $S\cup \{x\}$, $(a, f^m(a))$ fills $S$ for $m\geq 3$. We also study the cases of $0<m\leq 2$ and show that if $(a,f^2(a))$ does not fill $S$, then there is only one geodesic $b$ such that $b$ is disjoint from both $a$ and $f^2(a)$. In fact, $b=f(a)$ and $\{a,f(a)\}$ forms the boundary of an $x$-punctured cylinder on $S$. As a consequence, we show that if $a$ and $f(a)$ are not disjoint. Then $(a,f^m(…
We give a summary of known results on the maximal distances between Dehn fillings on a hyperbolic 3-manifold that yield 3-manifolds containing a surface of non-negative Euler characteristic that is either essential or Heegaard.
We prove a quantitative estimate with a power saving error term for the number of filling closed geodesics of a given topological type and length $\leq L$ on an arbitrary closed, orientable, negatively curved surface. More generally, we prove estimates of the same kind for the number of free homotopy classes of filling closed curves of a given topological type on a closed, orientable surface whose geometric intersection number with respect to a given filling geodesic current is $\leq L$. The proofs rely on recent progress made on the study of the effective dynamics of the mapping class group o…
This note is about a type of quantitative density of closed geodesics on closed hyperbolic surfaces. The main results are upper bounds on the length of the shortest closed geodesic that $\varepsilon$-fills the surface.
We study filling sets of simple closed curves on punctured surfaces. In particular we study lower bounds on the cardinality of sets of curves that fill and that pairwise intersect at most k times on surfaces with given genus and number of punctures. We are able to establish orders of growth for even k and show that for odd k the orders of growth behave differently. We also study the corresponding questions when one requires that the curves be represented as systoles on hyperbolic complete finite area surfaces.
We show that the asymptotic growth rate for the minimal cardinality of a set of simple closed curves on a closed surface of genus $g$ which fill and pairwise intersect at most $K\ge 1$ times is $2\sqrt{g}/\sqrt{K}$ as $g \to \infty$ . We then bound from below the cardinality of a filling set of systoles by $g/\log(g)$. This illustrates that the topological condition that a set of curves pairwise intersect at most once is quite far from the geometric condition that such a set of curves can arise as systoles.
Let $Σ$ be a compact, orientable surface of negative Euler characteristic, and let $h$ be a complete hyperbolic metric on $Σ$. A geodesic curve $γ$ in $Σ$ is filling, if it cuts the surface into topological disks and annuli. We propose an efficient algorithm for deciding whether a geodesic curve, represented as a word in some generators of $π_1(Σ)$, is filling. In the process, we find an explicit bound for the combinatorial length of a curve given by its Dehn-Thurston coordinate, in terms of the hyperbolic length. This gives us an efficient method for producing a collection which is guaranteed…
Let $S_g$ denoting the genus $g$ closed orientable surface. An {\em origami} (or flat structure) on $S_g$ is obtained from a finite collection of unit Euclidean squares by gluing each right edge to a left one and each top edge to a bottom one. Coherent filling pairs of simple closed curves, $(α,β)$ in $S_g$ are pairs for which their minimal intersection is equal to their algebraic intersection. And, a minimally intersecting filling of $(α,β)$ in $S_g$ is a pair whose intersection number is the minimal among all filling pairs of $S_g$. A coherent pair of curves is naturally associated with an o…
If a hyperbolic 3-manifold admits an exceptional Dehn filling, then the length of the slope of that Dehn filling is known to be at most six. However, the bound of six appears to be sharp only in the toroidal case. In this paper, we investigate slope lengths of other exceptional fillings. We construct hyperbolic 3-manifolds that have the longest known slopes for reducible fillings. As an intermediate step, we show that the problem of finding the longest such slope is equivalent to a problem on the maximal density horoball packings of planar surfaces, which should be of independent interest. We …
Let $F_g$ be a closed orientable surface of genus $g$. A set $Ω= \{ γ_1, \dots, γ_s\}$ of pairwise non-homotopic simple closed curves on $F_g$ is called a \emph{filling system} or simply a \emph{filling} of $F_g$, if $F_g\setminus Ω$ is a union of $b$ topological discs for some $b\geq 1$. A filling system is called \emph{minimal}, if $b=1$. The \emph{size} of a filling is defined as the number of its elements. We prove that the maximum size of a filling of $F_g$ with $b$ complementary discs is $2g+b-1$. Next, we show that for $g\geq 2, b\geq 1\text{ with }(g,b)\neq (2,1)$ (resp. $(g,b)=(2,1)$)…
In this paper, we use normal surface theory to study Dehn filling on a knot-manifold. First, it is shown that there is a finite computable set of slopes on the boundary of a knot-manifold that bound normal and almost normal surfaces in a one-vertex triangulation of that knot-manifold. This is combined with existence theorems for normal and almost normal surfaces to construct algorithms to determine precisely which manifolds obtained by Dehn filling: 1) are reducible, 2) contain two--sided incompressible surfaces, 3) are Haken, 4) fiber over the circle, 5) are the 3--sphere, and 6) are a lens s…
Let $S$ be a surface of negative Euler characteristic and consider a finite filling collection $Γ$ of closed curves on $S$ in minimal position. An observation of Foulon and Hasselblatt shows that $PT(S) \setminus \hatΓ$ is a finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold, where $PT(S)$ is the projectivized tangent bundle and $\hatΓ$ is the set of tangent lines to $Γ$. In particular, $vol(PT(S) \setminus \hatΓ)$ is a mapping class group invariant of the collection $Γ$. When $Γ$ is a filling pair of simple closed curves, we show that this volume is coarsely comparable to Weil-Petersson distance between str…
Let $ S_g $ be a closed surface of genus $ g $ and let $ (α, β) $ be a filling pair on $ S_g $; then $ i(α, β) \geq 2g-1 $, where $ i $ is the (geometric) intersection number. Aougab and Huang demonstrated that (exponentially many) minimally-intersecting filling pairs exist on $ S_g $ when $ g > 2 $ by a construction which produces higher-genus surfaces with filling pairs as connected sums of lower-genus surfaces with filling pairs. We present a generalization of their construction which provides an explicit, algebraic means of determining the homeomorphism class of the resulting pair, and a c…
A pair of distinct free homotopy classes of closed curves in an orientable surface $F$ with negative Euler characteristic is said to be length equivalent if for any hyperbolic structure on $F$, the length of the geodesic representative of one class is equal to the length of the geodesic representative of the other class. Suppose $α$ and $β$ are two intersecting oriented closed curves on $F$ and $P$ and $Q$ are any two intersection points between them. If the two terms $\langleα*_Pβ\rangle$ and $\langleα*_Qβ\rangle$ in $[\langleα\rangle,\langleβ\rangle]$, the Goldman bracket between them, are t…
We prove that any minimal weak symplectic filling of the canonical contact structure on the unit cotangent bundle of a nonorientable closed surface other than the real projective plane is s-cobordant rel boundary to the disk cotangent bundle of the surface. If the nonorientable surface is the Klein bottle, then we show that the minimal weak symplectic filling is unique up to homeomorphism.
Let $S_{g}$ denote the closed orientable surface of genus $g$. In joint work with Huang, the first author constructed exponentially-many (in $g$) mapping class group orbits of pairs of simple closed curves whose complement is a single topological disk. Using different techniques, we improve on this result by constructing factorially-many (again in $g$) such orbits. These new orbits are chosen so that the absolute value of the algebraic intersection number is equal to the geometric intersection number, implying that each pair naturally gives rise to an origami. We collect some rudimentary exper…
In this article, we construct a genus-$0$ or genus-$1$ positive allowable Lefschetz fibration on any minimal symplectic filling of the link of non-cyclic quotient surface singularities. As a byproduct, we also show that any minimal symplectic filling of the link of quotient surface singularities can be obtained from a sequence of rational blowdowns from its minimal resolution.
We prove that every minimal symplectic filling of the link of a quotient surface singularity can be obtained from its minimal resolution by applying a sequence of rational blow-downs and symplectic antiflips. We present an explicit algorithm inspired by the minimal model program for complex 3-dimensional algebraic varieties.
A pair $(α, β)$ of simple closed geodesics on a closed and oriented hyperbolic surface $M_g$ of genus $g$ is called a filling pair if the complementary components of $α\cupβ$ in $M_g$ are simply connected. The length of a filling pair is defined to be the sum of their individual lengths. In \cite{Aou}, Aougab-Huang conjectured that the length of any filling pair on $M$ is at least $\frac{m_{g}}{2}$, where $m_{g}$ is the perimeter of the regular right-angled hyperbolic $\left(8g-4\right)$-gon. In this paper, we prove a generalized isoperimetric inequality for disconnected regions and we prove t…
Let $S_{g}$ denote the closed orientable surface of genus $g$. We construct exponentially many mapping class group orbits of pairs of simple closed curves which fill $S_{g}$ and intersect minimally, by showing that such orbits are in correspondence with the solutions of a certain permutation equation in the symmetric group. Next, we demonstrate that minimally intersecting filling pairs are combinatorially optimal, in the sense that there are many simple closed curves intersecting the pair exactly once. We conclude by initiating the study of a topological Morse function $\mathcal{F}_{g}$ over t…
This paper is about the geometry of flip-graphs associated to triangulations of surfaces. More precisely, we consider a topological surface with a privileged boundary curve and study the spaces of its triangulations with n vertices on the boundary curve. The surfaces we consider topologically fill this boundary curve so we call them filling surfaces. The associated flip-graphs are infinite whenever the mapping class group of the surface (the group of self-homeomorphisms up to isotopy) is infinite, and we can obtain moduli spaces of flip-graphs by considering the flip-graphs up to the action of…
A filling Dehn surface in a $3$-manifold $M$ is a generically immersed surface in $M$ that induces a cellular decomposition of $M$. Given a tame link $L$ in $M$ there is a filling Dehn sphere of $M$ that "trivializes" (\emph{diametrically splits}) it. This allows to construct filling Dehn surfaces in the coverings of $M$ branched over $L$. It is shown that one of the simplest filling Dehn spheres of $S^3$ (Banchoff's sphere) diametrically splits the trefoil knot. Filling Dehn spheres, and their Johansson diagrams, are constructed for the coverings of $S^3$ branched over the trefoil. The constr…
T-curves are piecewise linear curves which have been used with success since the beginning of the 1990's to construct new real algebraic curves with prescribed topology mainly on the real projective plane. In fact T-curves can be used on any real projective toric surface. We generalize here the construction of the latter by departing from non-convex polygons and we get a class of surfaces, the ambient surfaces, that we characterize topologically and on which T-curves are also well defined. Associated to each T-curve we construct a surface, the T-filling, which is topologically the analog of th…
Filling length measures the length of the contracting closed loops in a null-homotopy. The filling length function of Gromov for a finitely presented group measures the filling length as a function of length of edge-loops in the Cayley 2-complex. We give a bound on the filling length function in terms of the log of an isoperimetric function multiplied by a (simultaneously realisable) isodiametric function.
Let M be a compact, orientable, irreducible, atoroidal 3-manifold with boundary an incompressible torus. Techniques based on the characteristic submanifold theory are used to bound the intersection number of two slopes αand βon the boundary of M. The method applies when βis the boundary slope of an essential surface F that is not a semi-fiber (i.e. F is not a fiber and does not split M into two twisted I-bundles), and the Dehn filling M(α) contains a suitable singular surface. One of the main results is that if F is planar and if the fundamental group of M(α) does not contain a non-abelian fre…
Given a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold M with a quasigeodesic flow we construct a π_1-equivariant sphere-filling curve in the boundary of hyperbolic space. Specifically, we show that any complete transversal P to the lifted flow on H^3 has a natural compactification as a closed disc that inherits a π_1 action. The embedding of P in H^3 extends continuously to the compactification and the restriction to the boundary is a surjective π_1-equivariant map from S^1 to S^2_\infty. This generalizes the result of Cannon and Thurston for fibered hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
The loop graph of an infinite type surface is an infinite diameter hyperbolic graph first studied in detail by Juliette Bavard. An important open problem in the study of infinite type surfaces is to describe the boundary of the loop graph as a space of geodesic laminations. We approach this problem by constructing the first examples of 2-filling rays on infinite type surfaces. Such rays accumulate onto geodesic laminations which are in some sense filling, but without strong enough properties to correspond to points in the boundary of the loop graph. We give multiple constructions using both a …
We prove the filling area conjecture in the hyperelliptic case. In particular, we establish the conjecture for all genus 1 fillings of the circle, extending P. Pu's result in genus 0. We translate the problem into a question about closed ovalless real surfaces. The conjecture then results from a combination of two ingredients. On the one hand, we exploit integral geometric comparison with orbifold metrics of constant positive curvature on real surfaces of even positive genus. Here the singular points are Weierstrass points. On the other hand, we exploit an analysis of the combinatorics on unio…
We consider the canonical contact structures on links of rational surface singularities with reduced fundamental cycle. These singularities can be characterized by their dual resolution graphs: the graph is a tree, and the weight of each vertex is no greater than its negative valency. In a joint work with Starkston, we previously showed that if the weight of each vertex in the graph is at most -5, the contact structure has a unique symplectic filling (up to symplectic deformation and blow-up). The proof was based on a symplectic analog of de Jong-van Straten's description of smoothings of thes…
