A popular approach for addressing uncertainty in variational inequality problems is by solving the expected residual minimization (ERM) problem. This avenue necessitates distributional information associated with the uncertainty and requires minimizing nonconvex expectation-valued functions. We consider a distinctly different approach in the context of uncertain linear complementarity problems with a view towards obtaining robust solutions. Specifically, we define a robust solution to a complementarity problem as one that minimizes the worst-case of the gap function. In what we believe is amongst the first efforts to comprehensively address such problems in a distribution-free environment, we show that under specified assumptions on the uncertainty sets, the robust solutions to uncertain monotone linear complementarity problem can be tractably obtained through the solution of a single convex program. We also define uncertainty sets that ensure that robust solutions to non-monotone generalizations can also be obtained by solving convex programs. More generally, robust counterparts of uncertain non-monotone LCPs are proven to be low-dimensional nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programs. We show that these problems may be globally resolved by customizing an existing branching scheme. We further extend the tractability results to include uncertain affine variational inequality problems defined over uncertain polyhedral sets as well as to hierarchical regimes captured by mathematical programs with uncertain complementarity constraints. Preliminary numerics on uncertain linear complementarity and traffic equilibrium problems suggest that the presented avenues hold promise.
We provide an efficient method to approximate the covariance between decision variables and uncertain parameters in solutions to a general class of stochastic nonlinear complementarity problems. We also develop a sensitivity metric to quantify the uncertainty propagation in the problem by determining the change in the variance of the output variables due to a change in the variance of an input parameter. The covariance matrix of the solution variables quantifies the uncertainty in the output and pairs correlated variables and parameters. The sensitivity metric helps in identifying the paramete…
We formulate pure characteristics demand models under uncertainties of probability distributions as distributionally robust mathematical programs with stochastic complementarity constraints (DRMP-SCC). For any fixed first-stage variable and a random realization, the second-stage problem of DRMP-SCC is a monotone linear complementarity problem (LCP). To deal with uncertainties of probability distributions of the involved random variables in the stochastic LCP, we use the distributionally robust approach. Moreover, we propose an approximation problem with regularization and discretization to sol…
We develop a novel variant of the classical Frank-Wolfe algorithm, which we call spectral Frank-Wolfe, for convex optimization over a spectrahedron. The spectral Frank-Wolfe algorithm has a novel ingredient: it computes a few eigenvectors of the gradient and solves a small-scale SDP in each iteration. Such procedure overcomes slow convergence of the classical Frank-Wolfe algorithm due to ignoring eigenvalue coalescence. We demonstrate that strict complementarity of the optimization problem is key to proving linear convergence of various algorithms, such as the spectral Frank-Wolfe algorithm as…
Linear complementarity problems are a powerful tool for modeling many practically relevant situations such as market equilibria. They also connect many sub-areas of mathematics like game theory, optimization, and matrix theory. Despite their close relation to optimization, the protection of LCPs against uncertainties -- especially in the sense of robust optimization -- is still in its infancy. During the last years, robust LCPs have only been studied using the notions of strict and $Γ$-robustness. Unfortunately, both concepts lead to the problem that the existence of robust solutions cannot be…
The robust truss topology optimization against the uncertain static external load can be formulated as mixed-integer semidefinite programming. Although a global optimal solution can be computed with a branch-and-bound method, it is very time-consuming. This paper presents an alternative formulation, semidefinite programming with complementarity constraints, and proposes an efficient heuristic. The proposed method is based upon the convex-concave procedure for DC (difference-of-convex) programming. It is shown that the method can often find a practically reasonable truss design within the compu…
Variational inequality problems allow for capturing an expansive class of problems, including convex optimization problems, convex Nash games and economic equilibrium problems, amongst others. Yet in most practical settings, such problems are complicated by uncertainty, motivating the examination of a stochastic generalization of the variational inequality problem and its extensions in which the components of the mapping contain expectations. When the associated sets are unbounded, ascertaining existence requires having access to analytical forms of the expectations. Naturally, in practical se…
The linear complementarity problem is a continuous optimization problem that generalizes convex quadratic programming, Nash equilibria of bimatrix games and several such problems. This paper presents a continuous optimization formulation for the weighted independence number of a graph by characterizing it as the maximum weighted $\ell_1$ norm over the solution set of a linear complementarity problem (LCP). The minimum $\ell_1$ norm of solutions of this LCP is a lower bound on the independent domination number of the graph. Unlike the case of the maximum $\ell_1$ norm, this lower bound is in ge…
Aggregation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) loads can provide reserves to absorb volatile renewable energy, especially solar photo-voltaic (PV) generation. In this paper, we decide HVAC control schedules under uncertain PV generation, using a distributionally robust chance-constrained (DRCC) building load control model under two typical ambiguity sets: the moment-based and Wasserstein ambiguity sets. We derive mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) reformulations for DRCC problems under both sets. Especially, for the Wasserstein ambiguity set, we utilize the right-hand si…

This paper describes a state estimation approach for non-causal time-varying linear descriptor equations with uncertain parameters. The uncertainty in the state equation and in the measurements is supposed to admit a set-membership description. The approach is based on the notion of the linear minimax estimation. Suboptimal minimax state estimation algorithm is introduced for DAEs with non-stationary rectangular matrices. Optimal algorithm is presented for DAEs with special structure of the matrices. A comparison of suboptimal and optimal algorithms is presented for 2D time-varying DAE with a …
A monotonic, non-kernel density variant of the density-matching technique for optimization under uncertainty is developed. The approach is suited for turbomachinery problems which, by and large, tend to exhibit monotonic variations in the circumferentially and radially mass-averaged quantities--such as pressure ratio, efficiency and capacity--with common aleatory turbomachinery uncertainties. The method is successfully applied to de-sensitize the effect of an uncertainty in rear-seal leakage flows on the fan stage of a modern jet engine.

This paper deals with robust optimization applied to network flows. Two robust variants of the minimum-cost integer flow problem are considered. Thereby, uncertainty in problem formulation is limited to arc unit costs and expressed by a finite set of explicitly given scenarios. It is shown that both problem variants are NP-hard. To solve the considered variants, several heuristics based on local search or evolutionary computing are proposed. The heuristics are experimentally evaluated on appropriate problem instances.
