A new upper bound on the relative entropy is derived as a function of the total variation distance for probability measures defined on a common finite alphabet. The bound improves a previously reported bound by Csiszár and Talata. It is further extended to an upper bound on the Rényi divergence of an arbitrary non-negative order (including $\infty$) as a function of the total variation distance.
Four problems related to information divergence measures defined on finite alphabets are considered. In three of the cases we consider, we illustrate a contrast which arises between the binary-alphabet and larger-alphabet settings. This is surprising in some instances, since characterizations for the larger-alphabet settings do not generalize their binary-alphabet counterparts. Specifically, we show that $f$-divergences are not the unique decomposable divergences on binary alphabets that satisfy the data processing inequality, thereby clarifying claims that have previously appeared in the lite…
Distribution matchers for finite alphabets are shown to have informational divergences that grow logarithmically with the block length, generalizing a basic result for binary strings.
Lovász's bound to the capacity of a graph and the the sphere-packing bound to the probability of error in channel coding are given a unified presentation as information radii of the Csiszár type using the R{é}nyi divergence in the classical-quantum setting. This brings together two results in coding theory that are usually considered as being of a very different nature, one being a "combinatorial" result and the other being "probabilistic". In the context of quantum information theory, this difference disappears.

In this paper, we propose a novel loss function for training Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) aiming towards deeper theoretical understanding as well as improved stability and performance for the underlying optimization problem. The new loss function is based on cumulant generating functions giving rise to \emph{Cumulant GAN}. Relying on a recently-derived variational formula, we show that the corresponding optimization problem is equivalent to R{é}nyi divergence minimization, thus offering a (partially) unified perspective of GAN losses: the R{é}nyi family encompasses Kullback-Leibler d…
This paper develops systematic approaches to obtain $f$-divergence inequalities, dealing with pairs of probability measures defined on arbitrary alphabets. Functional domination is one such approach, where special emphasis is placed on finding the best possible constant upper bounding a ratio of $f$-divergences. Another approach used for the derivation of bounds among $f$-divergences relies on moment inequalities and the logarithmic-convexity property, which results in tight bounds on the relative entropy and Bhattacharyya distance in terms of $χ^2$ divergences. A rich variety of bounds are sh…
This paper studies forward and reverse projections for the Rényi divergence of order $α\in (0, \infty)$ on $α$-convex sets. The forward projection on such a set is motivated by some works of Tsallis {\em et al.} in statistical physics, and the reverse projection is motivated by robust statistics. In a recent work, van Erven and Harremoës proved a Pythagorean inequality for Rényi divergences on $α$-convex sets under the assumption that the forward projection exists. Continuing this study, a sufficient condition for the existence of forward projection is proved for probability measures on a gene…
Shannon entropy is widely used to quantify the uncertainty of discrete random variables. But when normalized to the unit interval, as is often done in practice, it no longer conveys the alphabet sizes of the random variables being studied. This work introduces an entropy functional based on Jensen-Shannon divergence that is naturally bounded from above by one. Unlike normalized Shannon entropy, this new functional is strictly increasing in alphabet size under uniformity and is thus well suited to the characterization of discrete random variables.
A loss function measures the discrepancy between the true values and their estimated fits, for a given instance of data. In classification problems, a loss function is said to be proper if a minimizer of the expected loss is the true underlying probability. We show that for binary classification, the divergence associated with smooth, proper, and convex loss functions is upper bounded by the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence, to within a normalization constant. This implies that by minimizing the logarithmic loss associated with the KL divergence, we minimize an upper bound to any choice of los…

This paper considers derivation of $f$-divergence inequalities via the approach of functional domination. Bounds on an $f$-divergence based on one or several other $f$-divergences are introduced, dealing with pairs of probability measures defined on arbitrary alphabets. In addition, a variety of bounds are shown to hold under boundedness assumptions on the relative information. The journal paper, which includes more approaches for the derivation of f-divergence inequalities and proofs, is available on the arXiv at https://arxiv.org/abs/1508.00335, and it has been published in the IEEE Trans. o…
This paper considers the problem of guessing the realization of a finite alphabet source when some side information is provided. The only knowledge the guesser has about the source and the correlated side information is that the joint source is one among a family. A notion of redundancy is first defined and a new divergence quantity that measures this redundancy is identified. This divergence quantity shares the Pythagorean property with the Kullback-Leibler divergence. Good guessing strategies that minimize the supremum redundancy (over the family) are then identified. The min-sup value measu…
This paper starts by considering the minimization of the Renyi divergence subject to a constraint on the total variation distance. Based on the solution of this optimization problem, the exact locus of the points $\bigl( D(Q\|P_1), D(Q\|P_2) \bigr)$ is determined when $P_1, P_2, Q$ are arbitrary probability measures which are mutually absolutely continuous, and the total variation distance between $P_1$ and $P_2$ is not below a given value. It is further shown that all the points of this convex region are attained by probability measures which are defined on a binary alphabet. This characteriz…
We show that the moment generating function of the Kullback-Leibler divergence (relative entropy) between the empirical distribution of $n$ independent samples from a distribution $P$ over a finite alphabet of size $k$ (i.e. a multinomial distribution) and $P$ itself is no more than that of a gamma distribution with shape $k - 1$ and rate $n$. The resulting exponential concentration inequality becomes meaningful (less than 1) when the divergence $\varepsilon$ is larger than $(k-1)/n$, whereas the standard method of types bound requires $\varepsilon > \frac{1}{n} \cdot \log{\binom{n+k-1}{k-1}} …
This paper provides a numerical framework for computing the achievable rate region of memoryless multiple access channel (MAC) with a continuous alphabet from data. In particular, we use recent results on variational lower bounds on mutual information and KL-divergence to compute the boundaries of the rate region of MAC using a set of functions parameterized by neural networks. Our method relies on a variational lower bound on KL-divergence and an upper bound on KL-divergence based on the f-divergence inequalities. Unlike previous work, which computes an estimate on mutual information, which i…
If $S$ is an infinite sequence over a finite alphabet $Σ$ and $β$ is a probability measure on $Σ$, then the {\it dimension} of $ S$ with respect to $β$, written $\dim^β(S)$, is a constructive version of Billingsley dimension that coincides with the (constructive Hausdorff) dimension $\dim(S)$ when $β$ is the uniform probability measure. This paper shows that $\dim^β(S)$ and its dual $\Dim^β(S)$, the {\it strong dimension} of $S$ with respect to $β$, can be used in conjunction with randomness to measure the similarity of two probability measures $α$ and $β$ on $Σ$. Specifically, we prove that t…
The analogues of Arimoto's definition of conditional Rényi entropy and Rényi mutual information are explored for abstract alphabets. These quantities, although dependent on the reference measure, have some useful properties similar to those known in the discrete setting. In addition to laying out some such basic properties and the relations to Rényi divergences, the relationships between the families of mutual informations defined by Sibson, Augustin-Csiszár, and Lapidoth-Pfister, as well as the corresponding capacities, are explored.

The aim of this work is to provide bounds connecting two probability measures of the same event using Rényi $α$-Divergences and Sibson's $α$-Mutual Information, a generalization of respectively the Kullback-Leibler Divergence and Shannon's Mutual Information. A particular case of interest can be found when the two probability measures considered are a joint distribution and the corresponding product of marginals (representing the statistically independent scenario). In this case, a bound using Sibson's $α-$Mutual Information is retrieved, extending a result involving Maximal Leakage to general…
The Schnorr-Stimm dichotomy theorem concerns finite-state gamblers that bet on infinite sequences of symbols taken from a finite alphabet $Σ$. In this paper we use the Kullback-Leibler divergence to formulate the $\textit{lower asymptotic divergence}$ $\text{div}(S||α)$ of a probability measure $α$ on $Σ$ from a sequence $S$ over $Σ$ and the $\textit{upper asymptotic divergence}$ $\text{Div}(S||α)$ of $α$ from $S$ in such a way that a sequence $S$ is $α$-normal (meaning that every string $w$ has asymptotic frequency $α(w)$ in $S$) if and only if $\text{Div}(S||α)=0$. We also use the Kullback-L…
