In this paper, we investigate the use of relaxed logarithmic barrier functions in the context of linear model predictive control. We present results that allow to guarantee asymptotic stability of the corresponding closed-loop system, and discuss further properties like performance and constraint satisfaction in dependence of the underlying relaxation. The proposed stabilizing MPC schemes are not necessarily based on an explicit terminal set or state constraint and allow to characterize the stabilizing control input sequence as the minimizer of a globally defined, continuously differentiable, and strongly convex function. The results are illustrated by means of a numerical example.
We propose and analyze a stabilizing iteration scheme for the algorithmic implementation of model predictive control for linear discrete-time systems. Polytopic input and state constraints are considered and handled by means of so-called relaxed logarithmic barrier functions. The required on-line optimization is based on warm starting and performs only a limited, possibly small, number of optimization algorithm iterations between two consecutive sampling instants. The optimization algorithm dynamics as well as the resulting suboptimality of the applied control input are taken into account expl…
The controller of an input-affine system is determined through minimizing a time-varying objective function, where stabilization is ensured via a Lyapunov function decay condition as constraint. This constraint is incorporated into the objective function via a barrier function. The time-varying minimum of the resulting relaxed cost function is determined by a tracking system. This system is constructed using derivatives up to second order of the relaxed cost function and improves the existing approaches in time-varying optimization. Under some mild assumptions, the tracking system yields a sol…

We revisit the Thompson sampling algorithm to control an unknown linear quadratic (LQ) system recently proposed by Ouyang et al (arXiv:1709.04047). The regret bound of the algorithm was derived under a technical assumption on the induced norm of the closed loop system. In this technical note, we show that by making a minor modification in the algorithm (in particular, ensuring that an episode does not end too soon), this technical assumption on the induced norm can be replaced by a milder assumption in terms of the spectral radius of the closed loop system. The modified algorithm has the same …
In this paper, we introduce a class of future-focused control barrier functions (ff-CBF) aimed at improving traditionally myopic CBF based control design and study their efficacy in the context of an unsignaled four-way intersection crossing problem for collections of both communicating and non-communicating autonomous vehicles. Our novel ff-CBF encodes that vehicles take control actions that avoid collisions predicted under a zero-acceleration policy over an arbitrarily long future time interval. In this sense the ff-CBF defines a virtual barrier, a loosening of which we propose in the form o…
The entropic barrier, studied by Bubeck and Eldan (Proc. Mach. Learn. Research, 2015), is a self-concordant barrier with asymptotically optimal self-concordance parameter. In this paper, we study the tropicalization of the central path associated with the entropic barrier, i.e., the logarithmic limit of this central path for a parametric family of linear programs defined over the field of Puiseux series. Our main result is that the tropicalization of the entropic central path is a piecewise linear curve which coincides with the tropicalization of the logarithmic central path studied by Allamig…
We prove that the classic logarithmic barrier problem is equivalent to a particular logarithmic barrier positive relaxation problem with barrier and scaling parameters. Based on the equivalence, a line-search primal-dual interior-point relaxation method for nonlinear programs is presented. Our method does not require any primal or dual iterates to be interior-points, which is prominently different from the existing interior-point methods in the literature. A new logarithmic barrier penalty function dependent on both primal and dual variables is used to prompt the global convergence of the meth…
We describe an algorithm based on a logarithmic barrier function, Newton's method, and linear conjugate gradients that obtains an approximate minimizer of a smooth function over the nonnegative orthant. We develop a bound on the complexity of the approach, stated in terms of the required accuracy and the cost of a single gradient evaluation of the objective function and/or a matrix-vector multiplication involving the Hessian of the objective. The approach can be implemented without explicit calculation or storage of the Hessian.
We show that the Laplace approximation of a supremum by Lp-norms has interesting consequences in optimization. For instance, the logarithmic barrier functions (LBF) of a primal convex problem P and its dual appear naturally when using this simple approximation technique for the value function g of P or its Legendre-Fenchel conjugate. In addition, minimizing the LBF of the dual is just evaluating the Cramer transform of the Laplace approximation of g. Finally, this technique permits to sometimes define an explicit dual problem in cases when the Legendre-Fenchel conjugate of g cannot be derived …
It is an open question to determine if the theory of self-concordant barriers can provide an interior point method with strongly polynomial complexity in linear programming. In the special case of the logarithmic barrier, it was shown in [Allamigeon, Benchimol, Gaubert and Joswig, SIAM J. on Applied Algebra and Geometry, 2018] that the answer is negative. In this paper, we show that none of the self-concordant barrier interior point methods is strongly polynomial. This result is obtained by establishing that, on parametric families of convex optimization problems, the log-limit of the central …
We prove that primal-dual log-barrier interior point methods are not strongly polynomial, by constructing a family of linear programs with $3r+1$ inequalities in dimension $2r$ for which the number of iterations performed is in $Ω(2^r)$. The total curvature of the central path of these linear programs is also exponential in $r$, disproving a continuous analogue of the Hirsch conjecture proposed by Deza, Terlaky and Zinchenko. Our method is to tropicalize the central path in linear programming. The tropical central path is the piecewise-linear limit of the central paths of parameterized familie…

Spectral functions on Euclidean Jordan algebras arise frequently in convex models. Despite the success of primal-dual conic interior point solvers, there has been little work on enabling direct support for spectral cones, i.e. proper nonsymmetric cones defined from epigraphs and perspectives of spectral functions. We propose simple logarithmically homogeneous barriers for spectral cones and we derive efficient, numerically stable procedures for evaluating barrier oracles such as inverse Hessian operators. For two useful classes of spectral cones - the root-determinant cones and the matrix mono…
