Flux-averaged cross sections for cosmogenic-neutron activation of natural tellurium were measured using a neutron beam containing neutrons of kinetic energies up to $\sim$800 MeV, and having an energy spectrum similar to that of cosmic-ray neutrons at sea-level. Analysis of the radioisotopes produced reveals that 110mAg will be a dominant contributor to the cosmogenic-activation background in experiments searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 130Te, such as CUORE and SNO+. An estimate of the cosmogenic-activation background in the CUORE experiment has been obtained using the results of this measurement and cross-section measurements of proton activation of tellurium. Additionally, the measured cross sections in this work are also compared with results from semi-empirical cross-section calculations.
Neutrinoless double beta decays in liquid xenon produce a significant amount of Cherenkov light, with a photon number and angular distribution that distinguishes these events from common backgrounds. A GEANT4 simulation was used to simulate Cherenkov photon production and measurement in a liquid xenon detector and a multilayer perceptron was used to analyze the resulting distributions to classify events based on their Cherenkov photons. Our results show that a modest improvement in the sensitivity of neutrinoless double beta decay searches is possible using this technique, but the kinematics o…
Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay is a hypothesised nuclear process in which two neutrons simultaneously decay into protons with no neutrino emission. The prized observation of this decay would point to the existence of a process that violates a fundamental symmetry of the Standard Model of Particle Physics, and would allow to establish the nature of neutrinos. Today, the lower limits on the half-life of this process exceed 10$^{25}$-10$^{26}$ yr. I will review the current status of the searches for Double Beta Decay and the perspectives to enhance the experimental sensitivity in the next years.
Neutrinoless double beta-decay(DBD) is of current interest in high-sensitivity frontiers of particle physics. The decay is very sensitive to Majorana neutrinos masses, neutrino CP phases, right-handed weak interactions and others, which are beyond the standard electro-weal model. DBDs are actually ultra-rare events, and thus DBD experiments with ultra-high sensitivity are required. Critical discussions are presented on nuclear and detector sensitivities for high-sensitivity DBD experiments to study the neutrino masses in the normal and inverted hierarchies.
Double beta decay is a very rare nuclear process and, therefore, experiments intended to detect it must be operated deep underground and in ultra-low background conditions. Long-lived radioisotopes produced by the previous exposure of materials to cosmic rays on the Earth's surface or even underground can become problematic for the required sensitivity. Here, the studies developed to quantify and reduce the activation yields in detectors and materials used in the set-up of these experiments will be reviewed, considering target materials like germanium, tellurium and xenon together with other o…
We perform simulation study for a 10-kg $^{100}$Mo-based bolometeric demonstration experiment for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0νββ$) search at China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL). Cosmogenic production of radionuclides in $^{100}$Mo-enriched lithium molybdate crystals and copper components of the detector system are studied using Geant4 toolkit based on the simulated cosmic ray data from the CRY library. Background energy spectra of the cosmogenic radionuclides including $^{56}$Co, $^{82}$Rb and $^{88}$Y which are harmful for the $^{100}$Mo-based $0νββ$ experiment are investigated…
Of the many extensions to the standard model that could possibly generate neutrino mass, most necessitate the neutrino being a Majorana fermion. If this is the case, the rare process of neutrinoless double beta decay is predicted with half lives greater than about $10^{25}$ years. Many current and future experiments look for this decay by identifying a summed double beta energy at the Q value of the decay, but adding energy and angular measurements of the individual betas allows the underlying decay mechanism to be probed. A novel nano-tracking detector based on a clever combination of thin fi…
Neutrinoless double beta decay is a hypothetical radioactive process which, if observed, would prove the neutrino to be a Majorana fermion: a particle that is its own antiparticle. In this lecture mini-series I discuss the physics of Majorana fermions and the connection between the nature of neutrino mass and neutrinoless double beta decay. We review Dirac and Majorana spinors, discuss methods of distinguishing between Majorana and Dirac fermions, and derive in outline the connection between neutrino mass and double beta decay rates. We conclude by briefly summarizing the experimental landscap…
We discuss a mechanism of neutrinoless double beta decay, where neutrinos of different flavours come into play. This is realized by effective flavour-violating scalar interactions. As one consequence, we find that within the normal mass ordering the neutrino effective mass may no longer vanish due to contributions from other flavours. We evaluate the necessary nuclear matrix elements, consider the interference between the standard diagram and the new scalar one, and analyze a UV-complete model that realizes the scalar interaction. Tests of the complete model are possible at colliders and futur…
Addendum to: QRPA uncertainties and their correlations in the analysis of neutrinoless double beta decay
在以前的文章[Phys. Rev.
