Thermally-densified hafnium terephthalate UiO-66(Hf) is shown to exhibit the strongest isotropic negative thermal expansion (NTE) effect yet reported for a metal-organic framework (MOF). Incorporation of correlated vacancy defects within the framework affects both the extent of thermal densification and the magnitude of NTE observed in the densified product. We thus demonstrate that defect inclusion can be used to tune systematically the physical behaviour of a MOF.
Connecting Defects and Amorphization in UiO-66 and MIL-140 Metal-organic Frameworks: A Combined Experimental and Computational Study
We report an investigation of the "missing-linker phenomenon" in the Zr-based metal-organic framework UiO-66 using atomistic forcefield and quantum chemical methods. For a vacant benzene dicarboxylate ligand, the lowest energy charge capping mechanism involves acetic acid or Cl-/H2O. The calculated defect free energy of formation is remarkably low, consistent with the high defect concentrations reported experimentally. A dynamic structural instability is identified for certain higher defect concentrations. In addition to the changes in material properties upon defect formation, we assess the f…
Metal-organic framework (MOF) UiO-66 nanocrystals were previously believed to be piezo/ferro-electrically inactive because of their centrosymmetric lattice symmetries (Fm-3m (225)) revealed by Powder X-ray diffraction. However, via delicate dual AC resonance tracking piezoresponse force microscopy and piezoresponse force spectroscopy characterizations, our nanoscale probing for the first time demonstrate that UiO-66 nanocrystals show piezo/ferro-electric response. Our compelling experimental and theoretically analyses disclose that the structure of UiO-66 should not be the highly centrosymmetr…
We study the energetic stability and structural features of bimetallic metal-organic frameworks. Such heterometallic MOFs, which can result from partial substitutions between two types of cations, can have specific physical or chemical properties used for example in catalysis or gas adsorption. We work here to provide through computational chemistry a microscopic understanding of bimetallic MOFs and the distribution of cations within their structure. We develop a methodology based on a systematic study of possible cation distributions at all cation ratios by means of quantum chemistry calculat…
This study leverages density function theory (DFT) accompanied with Boltzmann transport equation approaches to investigate the electronic mobility as a function of inorganic substitution and functionalization in a thermally stable UiO-66 metal organic framework (MOF). The MOFs investigated are based on Zr-UiO-66 MOF with three functionalization groups of benzene dicarboxylate (BDC), BDC functionalized with an amino group (BDC + NH$_2$) and a nitro group (BDC + NO$_2$). The design space of this study is bound by UiO-66(M)-R, [M=Zr, Ti, Hf; R=BDC, BDC+NO$_2$, BDC+NH$_2$]. The elastic modulus was…
The metal organic framework (MOF) material UiO-66 has emerged as one of the most promising MOF materials due to its thermal and chemical stability and its potential for catalytic applications. Typically, as-synthesised UiO-66 has a relatively high concentration of missing linker defects. The presence of these defects has been correlated with catalytic activity but characterisation of defect structure has proved elusive. We refine a recent experimental determination of defect structure using static and dynamic first principles approaches, which reveals a dynamic and labile acid centre that coul…
UiO-66 is a well-known metal organic framework that proved to be promising for various separation applications. In this report we study the molecular mobility and transport of n-butane and isobutane through the UiO-66. We show that n-butane propagates through the material significantly faster than isobutane both in terms of energetics (diffusion barrier is 25 kJ mol-1 for n-butane and 50 kJ mol-1 for isobutane) and rate (Di(303 K)/Dn(303 K) = 1700). This result allows expecting very high kinetic driven separation selectivity of n-butane/isobutane mixture in UiO-66.
The ability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to gelate under specific synthetic conditions opens up new opportunities in the preparation and shaping of hierarchically porous MOF monoliths, which could be directly implemented for catalytic and adsorptive applications. In this work, we present the first examples of xero- or aerogel monoliths consisting solely of nanoparticles of several prototypical Zr4+-based MOFs: UiO-66-X (X = H, NH2, NO2, (OH)2), UiO-67, MOF-801, MOF-808 and NU-1000. High reactant and water concentrations during synthesis were observed to induce the formation of gels, whic…
We report the development of a forcefield capable of reproducing accurate lattice dynamics of metal-organic frameworks. Phonon spectra, thermodynamic and mechanical properties, such as free energies, heat capacities and bulk moduli, are calculated using the quasi-harmonic approximation to account for anharmonic behaviour due to thermal expansion. Comparison to density functional theory calculations of properties such as Gr$\mathrm{\ddot{u}}$neisen parameters, bulk moduli and thermal expansion supports the accuracy of the derived forcefield model. Material properties are also reported in a full…
Combined Experimental and Theoretical Studies on Iodine Capture of Zr-based Metal-Organic Frameworks: Effect of N-functionalization and Adsorption Mechanism
The practical application of sodium-ion hybrid capacitors is limited by their low energy densities resulted from the kinetics mismatch between cathodes and anodes, and the fire safety related to the flammable electrolyte-separator system. Hence, we report a rational design of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs, UiO-66) modified PVDF-HFP separator. High tensile strength and dimensional thermal stability of the separator reduce the risk of electrode short circuit caused by the separator deformation. MCC test demonstrates a reduction of 75% in peak heat release rate (pHRR), indicating an enhanced fir…
Defect engineering has arisen as a promising approach to tune and optimise the adsorptive performance of metal-organic frameworks. However, the balance between enhanced adsorption and structural stability remains an open question. Here both CO2 adsorption capacity and mechanical stability are calculated for the zirconium-based UiO-66, which is subject to systematic variations of defect scenarios. Modulator-dependence, defect concentration and heterogeneity are explored in isolation. Mechanical stability is shown to be compromised at high pressures where uptake is enhanced with an increase in d…
Novel MOF-based polymer nanocomposite films were successfully prepared using Zr-based UiO-67 as a metal-organic framework (MOF) and polyurethane (PU) as a polymeric matrix. Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXRPD) analysis confirms the improved stability of the UiO-67 embedded nanocrystals and scanning electron microscopy images confirm their homogeneous distribution (average crystal size ~100-200 nm) within the 50-um thick film. Accessibility to the inner porous structure of the embedded MOFs was completely suppressed for N2 at cryogenic temperatures. However, ethylene adsorption measurem…
We report here metal to insulator transition, colossal Seebeck coefficient and ultralow thermal conductivity (0.0057th of its bulk value, significantly smaller than many well-known thermoelectric materials and silicon, showing potential applications in thermoelectrics, electronics and photonics for heat dissipation) in monodispersed well characterized Ni nanoparticles. As a consequence, thermoelectric power factor and figure of merit are significantly enhanced compared to their bulk counterpart. Interestingly, a systematic crossover from metallic to semiconducting to finally electrically insul…
