The magnetic susceptibility, crystal and magnetic structures, and electronic structure of double perovskite Sr2ScOsO6 are reported. Using both neutron and x-ray powder diffraction we find that the crystal structure is monoclinic P21/n from 3.5 to 300 K. Magnetization measurements indicate an antiferromagnetic transition at TN=92K, one of the highest transition temperatures of any double perovskite hosting only one magnetic ion. Type I antiferromagnetic order is determined by neutron powder diffraction, with an Os moment of only 1.6(1) muB, close to half the spin-only value for a crystal field split 5d electron state with t2g^3 ground state. Density functional calculations show that this reduction is largely the result of strong Os-O hybridization, with spin-orbit coupling responsible for only a ~0.1 muB reduction in the moment.
The combined effect of electronic correlation and strong spin-orbit-coupling(SOC) can give rise to a variety of exotic quantum phases. Double perovskites provide a simple structure to study the spin-orbit-lattice entangled states. In this thesis, focusing on the 5d osmate double perovskite system, we conduct a combination of work including theoretical model simulation, first-principle calculation, and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments to understand the fundamental physical properties of this material system.
Through the utilization of element-resolved polarized x-ray probes, the electronic and magnetic state of an artificial La2FeCrO6 double perovskite were explored. Applying unit-cell level control of thin film growth on SrTiO3 (111), the rock salt double perovskite structure can be created for this system, which does not have an ordered perovskite phase in the bulk. We find that the Fe and Cr are in the proper 3+ valence state, but, contrary to previous studies, the element-resolved magnetic studies find the moments in field are small and show no evidence of a sizable magnetic moment in the rema…
The ability to tune exchange (magnetic) interactions between 3d transition metals in perovskite structures has proven to be a powerful route to discovery of novel properties. Here we demonstrate that the introduction of 3d-5d exchange pathways in double perovskites enables additional tunability, a result of the large spatial extent of 5d wave functions. Using x-ray probes of magnetism and structure at high pressure, we show that compression of Sr2FeOsO6 drives an unexpected continuous change in the sign of Fe-Os exchange interactions and a transition from antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic ord…
Double perovskites of the form A_2BB'O_6 usually involve a transition metal ion, B, with a large magnetic moment, and a non magnetic ion B'. While many double perovskites are ferromagnetic, studies on the underlying model reveal the possibility of antiferromagnetic phases as well driven by electron delocalisation. In this paper we present a comprehensive study of the magnetic ground state and T_c scales of the minimal double perovskite model in three dimensions using a combination of spin-fermion Monte Carlo and variational calculations. In contrast to two dimensions, where the effective magne…
Double perovskites extend the design space for new materials, and they often host phenomena that don't exist in their parent perovskite compounds. Here, we present a detailed first principles study of the correlated double perovskite Sr$_2$VNbO$_6$, where inter-cationic charge transfer and strength of electronic correlations depend strongly on the cation order. By using Density Functional Theory + Embedded Dynamical Mean Field Theory, we show that this compound has a completely different electronic structure than either of its parent compounds despite V and Nb being from the same group in the …
First-principles density functional calculations are performed within the local density approximation to study the electronic properties of SrZrO$_3$, an insulating 4d-perovskite, in its high-temperature cubic phase, above 1400 K, as well as the generic 3d-perovskite SrTiO$_3$, which is also a d^0-insulator and cubic above 105 K, for comparison reasons. The energy bands, density of states and charge density distributions are obtained and a detailed comparison between their band structures is presented. The results are discussed also in terms of the existing data in the literature for both oxid…
Cubic double perovskites that host heavy ions with total angular momentum J = 2 can exhibit a singular magnetic state epitomized by a lone octupole and bulk ferro-type magnetism. It exists in the Chen - Balents Hamiltonian with a quadrupole interaction and competing exchange forces between the ions. Our symmetry inspired analysis mirrors the Dzyaloshinskii - Man'ko theory of latent antiferromagnetic ordering, and a 3-k collinear structure. Experimental tests of the singular state include neutron and x-ray Bragg diffraction.
Several double perovskite materials of the form A_2BB'O_6 exhibit high ferromagnetic T_c, and significant low field magnetoresistance. They are also a candidate source of spin polarized electrons. The potential usefulness of these materials is, however, frustrated by mislocation of the B and B' ions, which do not organise themselves in the ideal alternating structure. The result is a strong dependence of physical properties on preparative conditions, reducing the magnetization and destroying the half-metallicity. We provide the first results on the impact of spatially correlated antisite disor…
The usual classical behaviour of S = 3/2, B-site ordered double perovskites generally results in simple, commensurate magnetic ground states. In contrast, heat capacity and neutron powder diffraction measurements for the S = 3/2 systems La2NaB'O6 (B' = Ru, Os) reveal an incommensurate magnetic ground state for La2NaRuO6 and a drastically suppressed ordered moment for La2NaOsO6. This behaviour is attributed to the large monoclinic structural distortions of these double perovskites. The distortions have the effect of weakening the nearest neighbour superexchange interactions, presumably to an en…
The formation of a long-range Jahn-Teller distortion in undoped manganites is studied within the dynamical mean-field theory taking both electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions into account. We find that the observed insulating behavior at temperatures above the Jahn-Teller transition and the bond-length changes below it can most naturally by explained by assuming a strong electronic repulsion and a rather weak electron-phonon coupling.
Inelastic neutron scattering experiments show that spin dynamics in the charge ordered insulating ground state of the double-layer perovskite YBaFe2O5 is well described in terms of eg superexchange interactions. Above the Verwey transition at TV = 308 K, t2g double exchange-type conduction within antiferromagnetic FeO2--BaO--FeO2 double layers proceeds by an electron hopping process that requires a spin flip of the five-fold coordinated Fe ions, costing an energy 5<J>S^2 of approximately 0.1 eV. The hopping process disrupts near-neighbor spin correlations, leading to massive damping of zone-bo…
Sr$_2$FeOsO$_6$ is an insulating double perovskite compound which undergoes antiferromagnetic transitions at 140 K ($T_{N1}$) and 67 K ($T_{N2}$). To study the underlying electronic and magnetic interactions giving rise to this behavior we have performed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments on polycrystalline samples of Sr$_2$FeOsO$_6$. The INS data reveal that the spectrum of spin excitations remains ungapped below T$_{N1}$, however below T$_{N2}$ a gap of 6.8 meV develops. The RIXS data reveals splitting of the T$_{2g}$ multiplet consi…
Radio frequency magneto-impedance measurements clearly reveal a pronounced anomaly at 260K besides the main MI transition at 125K in the double perovskite material $La_{1.2}Sr_{1.8}Mn_{2}O_{7}$. This feature is not seen clearly in static resistivity and magnetization measurements. We suggest that this anomaly represents short range magnetic correlations enhanced at radio frequencies, with the easy axis along the c-axis .
We explore the relative strengths of spin orbit coupling and crystal field splitting in the Ir5+ compounds Ba2-xSrxYIrO6. In the case of strong spin orbit coupling and regular Ir5+ octahedra, one expects a nonmagnetic J = 0 state; in the case of distorted octahedra where crystal field effects dominate, the t2g manifold splits into a magnetic ground state. We report the results of continuously transitioning from the cubic Ba2YIrO6 double perovskite with ideal octahedra to the monoclinic Sr2YIrO6 double perovskite with distorted octahedra. We see no emergence of an enhanced Ir5+ magnetic moment …
We formulate a theory of double perovskite coumpounds such as Sr$_2$FeReO$_6$ and Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ which have attracted recent attention for their possible uses as spin valves and sources of spin polarized electrons. We solve the theory in the dynamical mean field approximation to find the magnetic transition temperature $T_c$. We find that $T_c$ is determined by a subtle interplay between carrier density and the Fe-Mo/Re site energy difference, and that the non-Fe same-sublattice hopping acts to reduce $T_c$. Our results suggest that presently existing materials do not optimize $T_c$.
We have performed magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron powder diffraction, and muon spin relaxation experiments to investigate the magnetic ground states of the 5$d^2$ double perovskites Sr$_2$YReO$_6$ and Sr$_2$InReO$_6$. We find that Sr$_2$YReO$_6$ is a spin glass, while Sr$_2$InReO$_6$ hosts a non-magnetic singlet state. By making detailed comparisons with other 5$d^2$ double perovskites, we argue that a delicate interplay between spin-orbit coupling, non-cubic crystal fields, and exchange interactions plays a key role in the great variation of magnetic ground states observed for…
Experiments demonstrating the controlled growth of oxide heterostructures have raised the prospect of realizing topologically nontrivial states of correlated electrons in low dimensions. Here, we study heterostructures consisting of {111}-bilayers of double perovskites separated by inert band insulators. In bulk, these double perovskites have well-defined local moments interacting with itinerant electrons leading to high temperature ferromagnetism. Incorporating spin-orbit coupling in the two-dimensional honeycomb geometry of a {111}-bilayer, we find a rich phase diagram with tunable ferromagn…
Metals with large positive magnetoresistance are rare. We demonstrate that antiferromagnetic metallic states, as have been predicted for the double perovskites, are excellent candidates for huge positive magnetoresistance. An applied field suppresses long range antiferromagnetic order leading to a state with short range antiferromagnetic correlations that generate strong electronic scattering. The field induced resistance ratio can be more than tenfold, at moderate field, in a structurally ordered system, and continues to be almost twofold even in systems with upto 25 % antisite disorder. Alth…
The electronic structure and magnetism of Sr$_2$CeIrO$_6$, an Ir-based double perovskite system has been investigated using first-principles calculations. We found that a strong spin-orbit coupling dictate the electronic and magnetic properties of this system. A small value of $U$ along with SOC could open up a gap at the Fermi level, offering the possibility of novel J$_{eff}$ = 1/2 Mott quantum state. Our calculations reveal that the magnetic ground state is antiferromagnetic in agreement with the magnetization data and provide the value of spin and orbital moment for this system which is in…
Ferromagnetism in Cr-based double perovskites is analyzed using effective model as well as simulation approach. Starting from a microscopic model proposed recently for this class of double perovskites, an effective spin-only model is derived in the limit of large exchange coupling at the B-site. Analytic expressions for the resultant exchange coupling is derived in certain limiting cases. The behaviour of this exchange is used to provide a plausible explanation for the enhanced ferromagnetic tendency as also the enigmatic increase in Curie temperature observed in Cr-based DP-s, in the series S…
We combine several numerical and semi-analytical methods to study the $5d$ double perovskites Sr2YIRO6 and Ba2YIRO6 which were recently proposed to exhibit excitonic magnetism. Starting from the density functional theory and constrained random phase approximation we construct effective multi-band Hubbard models. These are analyzed by means of static and dynamical mean-field theories and strong coupling expansion. We find both materials to be insulators, but, contrary to the experimental claims, with a large spin gap of several hundreds meV preventing formation of an ordered state at low temper…
We have studied Ir spin and orbital magnetic moments in the double perovskites La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CoIrO$_6$ by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. In La$_2$CoIrO$_6$, Ir$^{4+}$ couples antiferromagnetically to the weak ferromagnetic moment of the canted Co$^{2+}$ sublattice and shows an unusually large negative total magnetic moment (-0.38\,$μ_{\text B}$/f.u.) combined with strong spin-orbit interaction. In contrast, in Sr$_2$CoIrO$_6$, Ir$^{5+}$ has a paramagnetic moment with almost no orbital contribution. A simple kinetic-energy-driven mechanism including spin-orbit coupling explains why Ir is …
We construct an effective Hamiltonian for the motion of electrons among the transition metal ions of ordered double perovskites like Sr2FeMoO6. in which strong intra-atomic Coulomb repulsion U is present in only one of the inequivalent transition metal sites. Using a slave-boson formalism, we construct a phase diagram which describes a charge transfer transition between insulating and metallic behavior as the parameters of the model are changed. The parameters for Sr2FeMoO6 are estimated from first-principles calculations and a transition to the insulating state with negative pressure is obtai…
We have investigated the electronic structure of meta-stable perovskite Ca1-xSrxIrO3 (x = 0, 0.5, and 1) thin films using transport measurements, optical spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations. We artificially fabricated the perovskite phase of Ca1-xSrxIrO3, which has a hexagonal or post perovskite crystal structure in bulk form, by growing epitaxial thin films on perovskite GdScO3 substrates using epi-stabilization technique. The transport properties of the perovskite Ca1-xSrxIrO3 films systematically changed from nearly insulating (or semi-metallic) for x = 0 to bad metallic for x =…
We show a tight-binding model for double perovskite monolayers grown in the {001} crystallographic direction can exhibit higher Chern numbers for the lowest band of the model dispersion in the absence of an applied magnetic field, including $\pm2$, $\pm4$, $\pm6$, and $\pm8$, for model parameters and terms relevant to Sr$_2$CrWO$_6$ (SCWO). We further show it is possible to tune between these different topological phases by applying a weak in-plane magnetic field. These results may be important for experimentally realizing exotic band topologies -- and even quantum anomalous Hall insulators wi…
Conflicting interpretations of experimental data preclude the understanding of the quantum magnetic state of spin-orbit coupled $d^2$ double perovskites. Whether the ground state is a Janh-Teller-distorted order of quadrupoles or the hitherto elusive octupolar order remains debated. We resolve this uncertainty through direct calculations of all-rank inter-site exchange interactions and inelastic neutron scattering cross-section for the $d^2$ double perovskite series Ba$_2M$OsO$_6$ ($M$= Ca, Mg, Zn). Using advanced many-body first principles methods we show that the ground state is formed by fe…
We construct an effective spin model from the coupled spin-fermion problem appropriate to double perovskites of the form A_2BB'O_6. The magnetic model that emerges is reminiscent of double exchange and we illustrate this `reduction' in detail for the case of perfect B-B' structural order, i.e, no antisite disorder. We estimate the effective exchange between the magnetic B ions in terms of the electronic parameters, study the `classical' magnetic model using Monte Carlo techniques, and compare this approach to a full numerical solution of the spin-fermion problem. The agreement is reasonable, a…
We start from a six-band model describing the transition-metal t2g orbitals of half-metallic double perovskite systems, such as Sr2FeMoO6, in which only one of the transition metal ions (Fe) contains important intratomic repulsion Ufe. By eliminating the Mo orbitals using a low-energy reduction similar to that used in the cuprates, we construct a Hamiltonian which contains only effective t2g Fe orbitals. This allows to treat exactly Ufe, and most of the Fe-Mo hopping. As an application, we treat the effective Hamiltonian in the slave-boson mean-field approximation and calculate the position of…
We measured the electrical resistivity, AC magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat of the cubic double perovskite Ba$_2$MgReO$_6$ under pressure. The application of pressure leads to a gradual increase in the transition temperature to the canted antiferromagnetic order, while the quadrupolar order is suppressed above 5 GPa, at which a collinear antiferromagnetic state appears. The obtained unit cell volume-temperature phase diagram for the compound as well as the related compounds suggests that Ba$_2$MgReO$_6$ exists near the phase boundary between the noncollinear and the collinear antifer…
The wide variety of complex physical behavior exhibited in transition metal oxides, particularly the perovskites A$B$O$_3$, makes them a material family of interest in many research areas, but the drastically different electronic structures possible in these oxides raises challenges in describing them accurately within density functional theory (DFT) and related methods. Here we evaluate the ability of the ACBN0, a recently developed first-principles approach to computing the Hubbard $U$ correction self-consistently, to describe the structural and electronic properties of the first-row transit…
A remarkable hardening (~ 30 cm-1) of the normal mode of vibration associated with the symmetric stretching of the oxygen octahedra for the Ba2FeReO6 and Sr2CrReO6 double perovskites is observed below the corresponding magnetic ordering temperatures. The very large magnitude of this effect and its absence for the anti-symmetric stretching mode provide evidence against a conventional spin-phonon coupling mechanism. Our observations are consistent with a collective excitation formed by the combination of the vibrational mode with oscillations of local Fe or Cr 3d and Re 5d occupations and spin m…
The quest for Kitaev spin liquids in particular three dimensional solids is long sought goal in condensed matter physics, as these states may give rise to exotic new types of quasi-particle excitations carrying fractional quantum numbers namely Majorana Fermionic excitations. Here we report the experimental signature of this characteristic feature of the Kitaev spin liquid via Raman measurements. Sm2ZnIrO6 is a strongly spin orbit coupled Mott insulator, where Jeff = 1/2 controls the physics, which provide striking evidence for this characteristic feature of the Kitaev spin liquid. As the temp…
We report on the unconventional magnetism in the cubic B-site ordered double perovskite Ba2YMoO6, using AC and DC magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and muSR. No magnetic order is observed down to 2 K while the Weiss temperature is ~ -160 K. This is ascribed to the geometric frustration in the lattice of edge-sharing tetrahedra with orbitally degenerate Mo5+ s=1/2 spins. Our experimental results point to a gradual freezing of the spins into a disordered pattern of spin-singlets, quenching the orbital degeneracy while leaving the global cubic symmetry unaffected, and providing a rare exampl…
In response to the experimental discovery of double perovskite Ru- base material, The magnetic and electronic properties of the double exchange mechanism are studied theoretically. The electron band structure and the spin wave spectrum response at zero temperature with the canting background are computed from the first principle Hamiltonian. The long range Coulomb interaction between charge carriers is found to be crucial in stabilizing the canting order. A Monte Carlo simulation is performed on de-Gennes's effective magnetic Hamiltonian with classical spin approximation. The peaks of the spec…
Normally $4d$ or $5d$ transition metals are in a low-spin state. Here using first-principles calculations, we report on a rare case of a high-spin $S$=1 magnetic state for the Ag$^{3+}$ ion in the double perovskite Cs$_{2}$KAgF$_{6}$. We also explored a possibility of a conventional low-spin $S$=0 ground state and find an associated tetragonal distortion to be 0.29 Å. However, the lattice elastic energy cost and the Hund exchange loss exceed the e$_{g}$ crystal-field energy gain, thus making the low-spin tetragonal structure less favorable than the high-spin cubic structure. We conclude that t…
We present a neutron powder diffraction study of the monoclinic double perovskite systems Nd2NaB'O6 (B' = Ru, Os), with magnetic atoms occupying both the A and B' sites. Our measurements reveal coupled spin ordering between the Nd and B' atoms with magnetic transition temperatures of 14 K for Nd2NaRuO6 and 16 K for Nd2NaOsO6. There is a Type I antiferromagnetic structure associated with the Ru and Os sublattices, with the ferromagnetic planes stacked along the c-axis and [110] direction respectively, while the Nd sublattices exhibit complex, canted antiferromagnetism with different spin arrang…
We investigated the electronic structures of the two-dimensional layered perovskite Sr$_{2}$\textit{M}O$_{4}$ (\textit{M}=4\textit{d} Ru, 4\textit{d} Rh, and 5\textit{d} Ir) using optical spectroscopy and polarization-dependent O 1\textit{s} x-ray absorption spectroscopy. While the ground states of the series of compounds are rather different, their optical conductivity spectra $σ(ω)$ exhibit similar interband transitions, indicative of the common electronic structures of the 4\textit{d} and 5\textit{d} layered oxides. The energy splittings between the two $e_{g}$ orbitals, $i.e.$, $d_{3z^{2}-…
Exploring new magnetic materials is essential for finding advantageous functional properties such as magnetoresistance, magnetocaloric effect, spintronic functionality, and multiferroicity. Versatile classes of double perovskite compounds have been recently investigated because of intriguing physical properties arising from the proper combination of several magnetic ions. In this study, it is observed that the dominant ferrimagnetic phase is coexisted with a minor multiferroic phase in single-crystalline double-perovskite Er2CoMnO6. The majority portion of the ferrimagnetic order is activated …
Insulating ferromagnets with high TC are required for many new magnetic devices. More complexity arises when strongly correlated 3d ions coexist with strongly spin-orbit coupled 5d ones in a double perovskite. Here, we perform the structural, magnetic, and density functional theory study of such double perovskite La2CuIrO6. A new P21/n polymorph is found according to the comprehensive analysis of x-ray, Raman scattering and phonon spectrum. The magnetization reveals a weak ferromagnetic (FM) transition at TC = 62 K and short range FM order in higher temperature range. A huge coercivity is foun…
We investigated the anisotropy of the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of singlecrystalline double perovskite Tb2CoMnO6, which crystallizes in a monoclinic P21/n structure. Due to dissimilar magnetic anisotropy, the ferromagnetic order of the Co2+ and Mn4+ moments emerges along the c-axis at TC = 100 K, and the larger Tb3+ moments align perpendicular to the c-axis, below TTb = 15 K. The intricate temperature development of the metamagnetism along the c-axis results in a large negative change in the magnetic entropy at low temperature. On the other hand, the larger but almost reversible m…
The magnetic structure of Ca$_2$MnReO$_6$ double perovskite is investigated by neutron powder diffraction and bulk magnetization, showing dominant non-collinear Mn magnetic moments [$4.35(7)$ $μ_B$] that are orthogonally aligned with the small Re moments [$0.22(4)$ $μ_B$]. $Ab$-initio electronic structure calculations show that the strong spin-orbit coupling for Re $5d$ electrons combined with a relatively modest on-site Coulomb repulsion ($U_{eff}^{Re} \gtrsim 0.6$ eV) is sufficient to render this material insulating. This is a rare example of spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator outside the re…
Bulk-sensitive high-resolution photoemission was carried out on a prototype 3d1 metallic Sr1-xCaxVO3. In a strong contrast to so far reported results, the bulk spectral functions are revealed to be insensitive to x. The conservation of the density of states at the Fermi level in spite of the electron correlation is clarified by the successful suppression and deconvolution of the surface contribution. Our study has demonstrated the importance of high-energy and high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy for revealing detailed bulk electronic states of transition metal oxides.
We synthesize and study single crystals of a new double-perovskite Sr2YIrO6. Despite two strongly unfavorable conditions for magnetic order, namely, pentavalent Ir5+(5d4) ions which are anticipated to have Jeff=0 singlet ground states in the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) limit, and geometric frustration in a face centered cubic structure formed by the Ir5+ ions, we observe this iridate to undergo a novel magnetic transition at temperatures below 1.3 K. We provide compelling experimental and theoretical evidence that the origin of magnetism is in an unusual interplay between strong non-cubic…
We formulate and study a spin-orbital model for a family of cubic double perovskites with $d^1$ ions occupying a frustrated fcc sublattice. A variational approach and a complimentary analytical analysis reveal a rich variety of phases emerging from the interplay of Hund's and spin-orbit couplings (SOC). The phase digram includes non-collinear ordered states, with or without net moment, and, remarkably, a large window of a non-magnetic disordered spin-orbit dimer phase. The present theory uncovers the physical origin of the unusual amorphous valence bond state experimentally suggested for Ba$_2…
We present a microscopic theory of carrier-induced ferrimagnetism in metallic double perovskite compounds such as ${\rm Sr}_{2}{\rm FeMoO}_{6}$ and ${\rm Sr}_{2}{\rm FeReO}_{6}$ which have recently attracted intense interest for their possible applications to magnetotransport devices. The theory is based on an effective "Kondo-like" Hamiltonian treated here within the large-$S$ expansion. We find that depending on the value of the carrier density the ground state is either a ferrimagnet or a layered antiferromagnet. The ferrimagnetic state has a robust half-metallic electronic structure. The t…
Interplay of spin-orbit coupling and vibronic coupling on heavy $d^1$ site of cubic double perovskites is investigated by ab initio calculations. The stabilization energy of spin-orbital-lattice entangled states is found comparable to or larger than the exchange interactions, suggesting the presence of Jahn-Teller dynamics in the systems. In Ba$_2$YMoO$_6$, the pseudo JT coupling enhances the mixing of the ground and excited spin-orbit multiplet states, which results in strong temperature dependence of effective magnetic moments. The entanglement of the spin and lattice degrees of freedom indu…
We have performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments to investigate the magnetic excitations in the quasi-face-centered-cubic (fcc) iridate double perovskites La2ZnIrO6 and La2MgIrO6, which are characterized by A-type antiferromagnetic ground states. The neutron scattering data, which reveal gapped spin wave excitations with a very weak dispersion, are shown to be well-described by theoretical calculations on a model Hamiltonian with dominant Kitaev interactions. Our surprising finding shows that in contrast to honeycomb materials, where the Kitaev interaction manifests itself via comple…
We study magnetism on the fcc lattice with tetragonal distortions, with general exotic directional magnetic interactions allowed by symmetry. We consider two models, corresponding to a uniform tetragonal distortion, or a two-sublattice model with a tetragonal screw axis. We establish their low temperature phase diagrams in the semi-classical limit using classical optimization and consideration of fluctuations both analytically and by Monte Carlo simulation. Both order by disorder and exchange anisotropy mechanisms favor a $\langle 110\rangle$ easy axis for magnetization. We also show that spin…
We have prepared crystallographically ordered and disorder specimens of the double perovskite, Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ and investigated their magnetoresistance behaviour. The extent of ordering between the Fe and Mo sites in the two samples is determined by Rietveld analysis of powder x-ray diffraction patterns and reconfirmed by Mössbauer studies. While the ordered sample exhibits the sharp low-field response, followed by moderate changes in the magnetoresistance at higher fields, the disordered sample is characterised by the absence of the spectacular low-field response. We argue that the low field …
We analyzed the possible magnetic and orbital orderings of double perovskites, using a simple extension of the double exchange model well suited for these compounds. Orbital ordering is favored by the on site repulsion at the Fe ions. We obtain a rich phase diagram, including ferri- and antiferromagnetic phases, which can, in turn, be metallic or insulating, depending on the existence of orbital order.
We have investigated spin and orbital magnetic moments of the Re 5d ion in the double perovskites A2FeReO6 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca) by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Re L(2,3) edges. In these ferrimagnetic compounds an unusually large negative spin and positive orbital magnetic moment at the Re atoms was detected. The presence of a finite spin magnetic moment in a 'non-magnetic' double perovskite as observed in the double perovskite Sr2ScReO6 proves that Re has also a small, but finite intrinsic magnetic moment. We further show for the examples of Ba and Ca that the usually neglected …
The double perovskite material \SFMO has the rare and desirable combination of a half-metallic ground state with 100% spin polarization and ferrimagnetic \Tc$\simeq 420$K, well above room temperature. In this two-part paper, we present a comprehensive theoretical study of the magnetic and electronic properties of half metallic double perovskites. In this paper we present exact diagonalization calculations of the "fast" Mo electronic degrees coupled to "slow" Fe core spin fluctuations treated by classical Monte Carlo techniques. From the temperature dependence of the spin-resolved density of st…
Double perovskites like Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ are materials with half-metallic ground states and ferrimagnetic T$_{\rm{c}}$'s well above room temperature. This paper is the second of our comprehensive theory for half metallic double perovskites. Here we derive an effective Hamiltonian for the Fe core spins by "integrating out" the itinerant Mo electrons and obtain an unusual double square-root form of the spin-spin interaction. We validate the classical spin Hamiltonian by comparing its results with those of the full quantum treatment presented in the companion paper "Theory of Half-Metallic Double …
We report the understanding of the electronic band structure of $Cs_4CuSb_2Cl_{12}$ perovskite through first-principles density-functional theory calculations. We find that the most stable state has the antiferromagnetic configuration where each $[CuCl_6]$ octahedral chain along the [010] direction is antiferromagnetic. The reasonable band structure of the compound can be obtained only if both the correct magnetic order and the improved exchange interaction of the Cu $\it{d}$ electrons are taken into account.
A mean field approximation of a model for double perovskites that takes into account the coupling between itinerant electron spins and localized spins is developed. As in previously reported theoretical results, and contrary to experimental observation, the critical temperature is suppressed for large electron density. An effective Heisenberg model reveals the cause of this discrepancy: the competition between degenerate antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic channels. This degeneracy can be broken by the inclusion of a Hubbard-type U term. It is therefore suggested that electron correlation effe…
The dynamical mean field method is used to analyze the magnetic transition temperature and optical conductivity of a model for the ferrimagnetic double perovskites such as $Sr_2FeMoO_6$. The calculated transition temperatures and optical conductivities are found to depend sensitively on the band structure. For parameters consistent with local spin density approximation band calculations, the computed transition temperatures are lower than observed, and in particular decrease dramatically as band filling is increased, in contradiction to experiment. Band parameters which would increase the tran…
We present a powder inelastic neutron scattering study of magnetic excitations in Ba$_2$FeReO$_6$, a member of the double perovskite family of materials which exhibit half-metallic behavior and high Curie temperatures. We find clear evidence of two well-defined dispersing magnetic modes in its low temperature ferrimagnetic state. We develop a local moment model, which incorporates the interaction of Fe spins with spin-orbit locked magnetic moments on Re, and show that this captures our experimental observations. Our study further opens up double perovskites as model systems to explore the inte…
