We show that supersymmetric M-theory compactifications to three-dimensional Minkowski space-time preserving $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry allow for a class of internal manifolds more general than the Calabi-Yau one, namely the class of locally conformally Kähler manifolds which locally carry a preferred Calabi-Yau structure.

Calabi-Yau 3-folds from 2-folds

We consider type IIA string theory on a Calabi-Yau 2-fold with D6-branes wrapping 2-cycles in the 2-fold. We find a complete set of conditions on the supergravity solution for any given wrapped brane configuration in terms of SU(2) structures. We reduce the problem of finding a supergravity solution for the wrapped branes to finding a harmonic function on R$\times$CY$_2$. We then lift this solution to 11-dimensions as a product of R$^{(4.1)}$ and a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We show how the metric on the 3-fold is determined in terms of the wrapped brane solution. The geometry of wrapped M5-branes in Calabi-Yau 2-folds

We study the geometry of M5-branes wrapping a 2-cycle which is Special Lagrangian with respect to a specific complex structure in a Calabi-Yau two-fold. Using methods recently applied to the three-fold case, we are again able find a characterization of the geometry, in terms of a non-integrable almost complex structure and a (2,0) form. This time, however, due to the hyper-K{ä}hler nature of the underlying 2-fold we also have the freedom of choosing a different almost complex structure with respect to which the wrapped 2-cycle is holomorphic. $T^4$ fibrations over Calabi-Yau two-folds and non-Kahler manifolds in string theory

We construct a geometric model of eight-dimensional manifolds and realize them in the context of type II string theory. These eight-manifolds are constructed by non-trivial $T^{4}$ fibrations over Calabi-Yau two-folds. These give rise to eight-dimensional non-Kahler Hermitian manifolds with $SU(4)$ structure. The eight-manifold is also a circle fibration over a seven-dimensional $G_{2}$ manifold with skew torsion. Calabi-Yau manifolds from pairs of non-compact Calabi-Yau manifolds

Most of Calabi-Yau manifolds that have been considered by physicists are complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds of toric varieties or some quotients of product types. Purpose of this paper is to introduce a different and rather new kind of construction method of Calabi-Yau manifolds by pasting two non-compact Calabi-Yau manifolds. We will also in some details explain a curious and mysterious similarity with construction of some $G_2$-manifolds (also called Joyce manifolds), which are base spaces for M-theory.
